Wrestling is one of the worst things in the world.  Remember in high school when all the wrestlers would talk about how wrestling was way harder than basketball and all the basketball players didn't know who the wrestlers were or that we even had a wrestling team?

I ran track and cross country, and played BB in my high school years. A day or two before their matches, the wrestlers would miss class while they dressed in what looked like rubber suits and headed for the high school boiler room, where they stayed for hours.

They emerged alive, but with mixed results on the mats.

Also, wearing rubber suits and crap was not allowed where I wrestled.

Wrestling is by far the toughest sport a HS kid can play

When you consider all the dieting, training, pain, and technique it's a pretty large order for a young developing person.

Throw in a bunch of diseases, and ball rubbing/grabbing, and you really have a point. The one saving grace is that they think it is so funny to call the basketball players "pumpkin pushers".

Wrestling is probably the studliest sport there is imo. I never got the whole cutting weight aspect tho. Just be in shape and wrestle your weight. I figure if a wrestler did that they would be stronger/ have more stamina than some dude who cut a bunch of weight just before the match.

Edit: I guess if you had a guy on your team who was significantly better than you and you wanted to be able to compete then you would cut out of necessity, but that would be the only case it seems logical.  Cutting to avoid tougher opponents seems wimpish and absurd to me.

Would do it again.

Never got ring worm or anything like that. Didn't really cut a bunch of weight. Just sweat out the water the night before like everyone does.

But seriously, no need for all the tiny weight classes. 112/119/125/130/135/140/145 need to be combined into 3/4 weight classes and they need to add 3 more weight classes between 160 and 190.

No one likes to see squirley little people wrestle, we want to see MEN wrestle.

the talking points brought up in this thread are stupid. each one of those stereotypes are perpetuated by crazies.

your average wrestler does not ever contract a skin disease, because they shower after practices and competition like a normal person. I never once contracted a skin disease over the ten years I wrestled.

your average wrestler will drain cauliflower ear if they develop it, I did.

your average wrestler does not diet/ cut extreme amounts of weight. I cut a few pounds as an underclassmen to fill an open varsity spot, but I didn't need to cut after that season.

comparing wrestling to basketball, and the athletes that participate in the sports, is stupid. they are quite different sports and require quite different skill sets. those wrestlers who bad-talk basketball players, are the wrestlers who couldn't make the basketball team and went out for wrestling as a second choice.

tobacco use and steroid use

I never once gave or received a ball grabbing, or a balls to face during my wrestling career. However, I did have my balls grabbed at the bottom of piles during football on more than one occasion.

tl/ dr: the detractors in this thread don't know what they are talking about and need to shut their dumb, fat faces.

after Coach Switzky (former EMAW wrestler) retired we got a spot light for duels and tournament finals! One of my favorite high school sports memories is pinning my opponent from High in the first period, under the spot light on senior night. The crowd went nuts that night, every senior won their match by a fall in the first period.

A lot of times it's from not wearing head gear like a lot of people don't in freestyle tournaments because it isn't required there. I never wrestled freestyle though so no cauliflower ear.

Post by: Asteriskhead on February 23, 2014, 11:18:31 PM
folkstyle is what is wrestled in high school and college in the US. Freestyle and Greco Roman are olympic styles.

The worst cases of cauliflower ear are usually caused by headgear that slips out of place. Friction causes the skin of the ear to separate from the cartilage, the void will then fill with fluid and it becomes very painful. Then if the dumbasses don't get it drained, it will harden over time. I know a guy who had surgery to repair it after he let it harden, I don't recommend that route.

We didn't wear headgear in practice, but I also never got cauliflower ear.

In addition to wrestling, I've played football, soccer, baseball and tennis competitively. I also ran distance in track. Wrestling was by far the most physically demanding of any of those sports.

EDIT: I should add that this isn't a fanningbrag. I wasn't all state or w/e in any of them.

I was just joshing around, I don't think wrestling is dumber than any other sport, just being a smartass. When I have kids then I'll let them wrestle if they want to. BUT, all the wrestlers I knew in high school checked off two or three of the things mentioned above. Maybe the program wasn't run very well and it's not indicative of the crap most high school wrestlers get into/go through. You'd probably know better than I would.

Oh, I'm definitely a sociopath. I was just standing up for my teammates.

Another thing I liked/found interesting about wrestling: despite it not being a traditional team sport, it had more of a "team" feel to it than any of the other sports I participated in.

It really wasn't one of my go-to's. It worked well going back the other way, we called that move the snake, or in desperation. Honestly, I primarily used the basics (i.e. double legs, high crotches, single legs and half nelsons). I wasn't a fancy or stylish wrestle.

UNL's 2008 recruiting class had three multiple time Kansas State champs in it. Only one made it to campus. A Hutch wrestler was arrested for assault over that summer and a Gardner-Edgerton wrestler was arrested for the theft of multiple macbooks from a high school he had been training at.

That same summer UNO kicked off two all-american wrestlers from their team for posing for porn sites.

I can't verify this, but at regionals my junior year I was told that another wrestler there at slapped one of his teammates in the face with his penis in their hotel room the night before.

That's just a smattering of the terrible stories I have from over my high school and collegiate career.

The worst thing I remember my teammates really doing was smoking pot. Other than that, I don't remember them being too big of dirtbags. I mean, football/basketball players get into legal trouble all of the time.

One of my teammates had a penis piercing. One day the ring came out during practice.

Coach found it and picked it up. "Did anyone lose an ear ring?....... Oh..."

6 time state qualifier, 2x state champ
got tons of D1 offers, but skipped out on SAT/ACT and was burned out on wrestling

Maybe he skipped out on the SAT/ACT because it took him 6 years to get through high school?

My friends in HS who were wrestlers, would throw up on purpose after meals. We use to go to taco bell a lot and they'd do this after every meal. We'd ask them, "what's the point of eating, if you're just going to throw it up?" and they'd always respond with "It still tastes good!"

Nope, high school-this is NYS, not KS. Kids from every division competed together, not a 2A, 3A, 4A, etc champ.

He was mining for molybdenum in CO, then gold in NM, next job is supposedly in NV.

Lots of shitty people and weirdos for sure. My high school had their first state champion in like ten years last season, and he got kicked off the team for stealing crap from teammates out of the locker room.

Ugh. I hope the kid who got dick-slapped jumped in the shower so he wouldn't catch herpes.

this is romero cotton. i believe he was a 4x champ and a very good fullback as well. he was like 6'2", 190lb and always ranked in the nation's top 10 at his weight.

the story i heard about the assault was that he and his brother came home to find their mother being beaten up by her boyfriend. they got ahold of him and "knocked every tooth out of his head, literally."

I have a bad history with eczema, so maybe my skin was just too pussy for wrestling.  I didn't mean it to be a knock on the sport of wrestling, because I like wrestling.

Also, wrestling managers are super easy and generally pretty attractive.
