Those of you HBBIQers, tell us about Hopper. Saw some pretty sick dunks at the pre-season scrimmage on news, but know nothing about his game. Should we be excited about him? How will he fit with Foster/Thomas/Wesley?
Also, any info on Bolden? Thanks studs.

It will be interesting to see how Edwards fits. He was the best player on a bad team at Maine. He was a very inefficient scorer, below average shooter, pretty good at assists, steals, and drawing fouls.
Bolden is an unknown, he played in 4 games at GT and literally his only stats was missing one shot. He was a 3 star recruit with supposed offers from Georgetown, Baylor, Florida, Georgia, Virginia, VCU, and VT out of high school.

coach 'em up

Edwards shot less than 30% from 3. But according to everyone there, he passed the eye test at our midnight madness, or whatever we call it.

Edwards shot less than 30% from 3.
Area code rule, though.

A year off is the best opportunity for Hopper to achieve his potential. As a guard, when you shoot under 30% from behind the arc your first two years in college, there is something fundamentally wrong with your shot. A year off gives the coaches a chance to fix that, and it gives him time to get accustomed to his new mechanics. He's an above average athlete and if he can shoot anywhere in the 30s from behind the arc next year, then he'll be able to utilize the stronger parts of his offensive game because teams will have to at least respect his threat from the outside. If he continues to struggle from the outside, then teams will sag off of him and he'll be relegated to being a role player most likely. Bolden? No clue. I don't think anyone knows anything about where he's at or where he's going as a basketball player, other than the staff.

Different area code, so it doesn't count. Laid out and explained pretty well in the hit classic movie Road Trip.

Its hard to know how he'll translate, but its fairly reasonable to hope he can be (at least) some sort of lesser version of Deandre Kane. And before you think the comparison is ridiculous I give you this:

If he can DOB, he'll win me over.

thanks, _FAN.
Deandre Kane it is.

Why not? Let's ramp these expectations up a notch. Just look at that comparision.
(granted, Maine was much worse than Marshall.)

I'm more of a smell test guy.
someone (MIR?) said he was the bitch version of lance harris

i think practicing a full year with the team you're going to be on helps a ton, as opposed to showing up in the summer prior. this is obvious, but worth noting.

Man, that FT%
Also, it seems like basically anyone on the bench should beat that 3pt%.

Yes, and an expectation of better shooting is reasonable. If you are the best player on a bad team, you are going to take a lot of bad shots and have defensive game plans designed to only stop you every game. Playing alongside Foster, Gip, etc. that simply will not be the case.
-
I have heard Edwards has improve his shoot quite a bit since leaving Maine. He will give us another guy that can really get in the lane.

Wait, why was Kane able to play immediately after transferring?

There we go. Grad student. Buchi awaji was the same way when he left K-state.

I guess I was thrown off since _FAN only posted 2 years of his 4 at Marshall.

I just chose two years just for comparison's sake because their last two years were very similar. Kane did shoot a little better as a freshman (he redshirted one year as well).
Wait, why was Kane able to play immediately after transferring?

he is 25.
24 going on 25.
He graduated, but supposedly there was turmoil at Marshal and their coach didn't exactly ask him to return for his senior season.
-
Thanks for the info. Watching the Freshmen this year has gotten me excited for next year. Hopefully Hurt can bring some immediate help to the post.

I couldn't find anything connecting him to any other school with his transfer.
This was somewhat interesting and was probably posted when he was announced, but I don't remember: http://www.casualhoya.com/2013/4/30/4285826/report-brandon-bolden-to-transfer-from-georgetown

1. Javon, Nigel, Marcus
2. Marcus, Nigel, Harris, Edwards
3. Edwards, Westicles, Harris, Marcus
4. Westicles, Nino, :crossfingers: Clark :crossfingers:
5. Gip, Hurt, Bolden, DJamer
We are going to be really deep next year, with only two seniors.

I'm sure this video was posted when he moved here, but it's fun to watch so I'll post it again.

Say what you want about the competition. But when you combined his kind of bounce with how proficient with jump stops and euro steps you have a chance at see an elite player at the big 12 level.

Marvin Clack from sunrise, who we are actively recruiting.

Edwards and Boldin played in the open practice/ pre-season scrimmage before a football game last fall. Boldin wasn't much of a factor that day, but Edwards left quite an impression on me. I thought he was the best player on the floor that day. Its a small sample size, but he was hot from 3 pt range and had a couple of dunks, one an athletic ally oop that was an awesome DOB. He's raised my expectation for next year.
I wish I knew more about Hurt.

Thanks _Fan. I missed that. 84+% FT is promising for a big. My excitement level for next yr is :woot:

Ive heard very promising things about Bolden.
-
That Maine was pimping him for conference player of the year makes the "best player on a bad team" description seem like a bit of an understatement.

I believe he should be an upgrade from what we are getting from Will's minutes but I was hoping he was more of a 3 than a 2.
Next year's roster doesn't have a stretch 4 IMO - It will be interesting to see if we play a majority of the time with 3 guards and 2 bigs or if we try to get away with Wes at the 4.

totally forgot Nino is only a JR but I am not sure he is the answer - too short and can't shoot 3s.
-
It will be interesting to see how the line-ups develop next year.
oscar will have a solid core of 5 guards/wings to work with: Jevon, Nigel, Foster, Westicles, and Edwards.
Then we'll have more bigs than usual: Gipson, DJamer, Nino, Bolden, Hurt.
I suppose Nino is a tweener, but he plays like a big. I included the main 10 that I think can be contributors next year. Looking at that line-up we may see 2 bigs on the floor.
-
If Hurt's anywhere near what he's cracked up to be, we have to figure out how to get him and Gip on the floor at the same time.
-

Of course they are different, but there are similarities that show up in a lot of their numbers. I was mainly speaking to the possibilities of what can happen when a player transfers up to a bigger program as far as improvement goes, especially when they are surrounded by other good players.

It's good to make that. 99% of the people reading this have never seen Edwards play & would expect to see a similar style of play & they are very different.

I was really surprised how similar their advanced stats were though, especially Kane's shooting.

IMO, I think a lot with have to do with how good Bolden is. If he is a decent player than can contribute next year, then I could see 80 minutes of PT going to Gip, Hurt, Nino and Bolden.
If not, I could see Westicles playing at the 3 and 4 spot on the floor. If Foster and Edwards log 62-64 minutes in important games, then Westicles is gonna see less than 20 if we don't play him at the 4 spot
oscar is gonna play the best players, so my gut call (right now) is we go small at times.... and Foster/Edwards/Westicles ave 86-88 minutes per in important games

no he's fine. apparently he drained some three's and looked sexy according to some gpc'ers but i didn't pay enough attention to see.

thanks for that 'blast. not to be ungrateful, but can anyone provide some additional info??

If sources are accurate on how Edwards is shooting "the cover of the ball", we are going to have a hell of a team. Hearing big things about Nigel. Anybody have some insidery info on Jevon.

ppl miss dunks all the time, and that one was passed too high, imo.
-
He'll be fine once he figures out his role on the team. He's still trying to be the star like he was on the Maine team.
-
What is his role?
-
Edwards has not played well so I hope he thinks his role is to get better.
-
From Weber's comments he is trying to learn how to play team ball instead of ball hog basketball. Weber says he is not getting in the offensive flow.

I want Edwards to be good and think a lot of this is just mental right now, but that was a dime from Foster and a blatant blown dunk. When you couple it with his complete inability to shoot, defend, or play within the offense, it's easy to see why people are so down on him. I mean, if he's not making a few explosive, high-energy dunks now and again, what does he add to the team right now?
-
I don't care if he ever dunks again in his life. I just want him to stop missing and be where he is supposed to.

Much better game so far

He's the highlight of this game.

His missed transition layup was our best offensive possession of the second half

He may have TERRIBLE hands.

Like, Ham Strickland hands.

He had 5 rebounds and couple of baskets 2nd half. It's not saying much, but he was our best player in the 2nd half.

we clearly disagree
what game was it from?
A&M, first half

Who the hell is Colin Deaver and why should I care? Did he tweet the same thing when a Texas A&M player bricked a dunk like five minutes later?
-
i'm not telling you to care. just posting it in case people hadn't seen it, that was the only video i could find.

I thought it was pretty funny at the time. I think MIR watches more hoops than a majority of the board so I'm sure our perspective is skewed relative to how common it is.

Sorry about that, the tweet didn't fully load when I posted earlier and I only saw text, didn't know the video was attached.

That video makes the missed dunk look pretty bad. I don't remember if it was as uncontested as it appears there or if defenders are just cropped out the way that video's shot.

Excited to see hopper IRL tomorrow.
