Title: Mushroom Hunting
Post by: ben ji on April 29, 2013, 09:20:25 AM
Anyone do this? I had no idea this was a common thing until recently.

Last week I saw a guy hunting for morels down by the KS river when I was fishing. He gave me a quick rundown on where to look and what the morels look like etc etc.

Then this weekend at a wedding in Independence KS some local was telling me how he found a bunch and they had just cooked them earlier in the day.

Went out morel hunting a few times last year and really enjoyed it. They go great sauteed in butter and served with steak or just straight up fried

I love mushroom hunting. Morel's are pretty expensive.

EDIT: The only downside is probably being covered in ticks afterwards

Wintz has it right guys.

Go every year.  There is only like a two week window for Morels and all other mushroom hunting can GTFOOMF.

They are delish sauteed in a small amt of butter with some diced fresh chives.

When we went fishing used to find them and sell them to the local farmer's market and then take the cash and blow it on worms to go fishing again.

So anyone have any tips on where to find them? Might look for some next time I go fishing.

As of now this is all I know-

Look in the forest, best time is when it is warm the day after a rain.

Here is the thing, everyone is going to tell you something different.

I always heard that they like to be below standing dead elms, however for the last 5 yrs I have found most of them under live sycamores.  They like low areas that stay moist and have filtered sunlight.

I never find them in thick undergrowth.

Usually the time is right when you see redbuds and dogwoods hit full bloom.

I have a spot near me that I have pulled two and a half paper grocery bags full from before.   :surprised:

i found 2 big colonies of these in my back yard:

Knowing how aweful and terrible mushroom poisoning can be (full renal failure will mess up your weekend plans) i was still to chickenshit to eat any.

Creeks are fine.  Doesn't even have to be next to rivers.  Look in slightly wetter areas, around dead trees and stuff.

Go every year.  There is only like a two week window for Morels and all other mushroom hunting can GTFOOMF.

They are delish sauteed in a small amt of butter with some diced fresh chives.

When gathering morels, care must be taken to distinguish them from the poisonous false morels, including Gyromitra esculenta, Verpa bohemica, and others. Although the false morels are sometimes eaten without ill effect, they can cause severe gastrointestinal upset and loss of muscular coordination (including cardiac muscle) if eaten in large quantities or over several days in a row. They contain a gyromitrin-like toxin (an organic, carcinogenic poison) that is produced by the mushroom.

morels are pretty distinct looking, not sure why people have trouble telling them apart.

why go out looking for them if you can buy them from some one else?  is it the thrill of the hunt?  if so, seems weird to hunt for something that can't move and doesn't even have a brain.

Better yet, why not just farm them? Within a year, you will have more mushrooms than you could ever eat in a lifetime and you will be able to sell them for millions most likely.

Yeah.  they feel extraordinarily different in your hand too.  The false morels are extremely dense feeling while the morels feel light as air.

My dad pulled three big false morels yesterday to show my kids.  They are big and very dense.

I can see why someone may mistake the smaller ones with an older morel if they didn't know much about them.  The older morels that get a little dried on top can darken to look pretty similar to the false ones.

When I go shroom hunting I skip the fox urine and just cover myself with cow crap to attract the mushrooms to me with a smell they prefer. With enough patience, they might even start growing on you. The only downside really is that you have to cover yourself with cow crap. Other than that, it works great and I would recommend it to all serious mushroom hunters.

My point exactly. You would only need to produce 250 pounds of mushrooms to sell them for $1 million. Why don't these mushroom hunters grow a brain and get into the fungiculture business?

Wife was a total hunter-gatherer yesterday.   Done fishing she headed to the woods to find mushrooms.

Agreed. Kind of concerned about Tom's kidneys right now. Pretty sure only one (maybe two) of those shrooms look like morels.

Started slowly with 4 little ones then hit the mother load under a big sycamore along the creek.

In the background of the Gator pic you can see wooded area.  Its wooded area along a creek.  Sycamore trees seem to be a contributing factor.  Mature trees with a decent amount of under growth, but not so dense you can't easily walk thru it.

I will try to get a better picture this weekend.

Cool,

I asked because from what I could see, my grandparents' farm SHOULD be ideal hunting grounds, I just haven't had luck but also don't REALLY know exactly where to be looking either.

This is pretty typical of the area we are finding mushrooms.
