Current union is butchered. They should tear it down and start over.

Why did they make it look like something that will be completely out of style in about 8 years?

Take a queue from the gorgeous library.

the current union is fine, they should take the money and spend it on teaching salaries.

I agree that the union is fine.  take the money and subsidize the cost of beer in the pool table area.

Yeah, ok, you lead the fundraising campaign for that one :flush:

The union is an eye sore, it needs to be upgraded. Its the first building high schoolers walk into, it needs to look new. Should be upgraded every 10 years, imo.

"Hey HS kids, look at these pool tables, and coors light 16oz'ers are only a buck"

"Also, did we mention that you can buy said beer at 9am and that the union is only a 5 min walk from basically any of your classes?"

Sold.

Just pointing out how difficult it would be to get donors for subsidizing beer costs in the union  :dunno:

I guess I just assumed this was being paid for with a hike in student fees, just like the Rec Center upgrades were.

The Student Union is OK.  I just wish it weren't ugly as crap on the South Side.  It's the gateway to campus; first building a lot of visitors see.  I see an aesthetic facelift as a good thing.

This looks nice, but the current union is already the nicest union I've visited. Have you guys been to KU's? LMFAO at that garbage heap.
Others I have been to:
Tulane- Small but very nice, pretty sweet food options and is open late nate.
Penn State- Amazing, but so is every other building on their campus
MU- Similair to our current one, better food options
ISU- Similair to our current one, nothing special

LHRMIQ.  I've heard the reason why we don't have a top 10 program in Hotel and Restaurant Management is because we don't have them 'on campus'.

ISU's hotel looks like crap.  I guess when your grads are going to run motel 6's or whatever, they can get applicable experience there.

I didn't go to the HRM school at KSU, but I think their requirements for intern/externships suck.  Most of the people I have worked with from there have incorrect expectations of what their job post-college will consist of.

Our union blows ass in its current 1982 state.  Great to see it being modernized.  And while the students are throwing their money around like drunken sailors on campus improvements, next up a bus system.

I'm not sure why everyone wants all this flashy glass all of the sudden. IMO, there isn't a classier look than limestone and our campus has many buildings that are gorgeous. As a poster above mentioned, Hale should be the basic blueprint for how to make a building look good.

I fully understand that aspect of this project because i'm in the AEC industry. A cornerstone building that has arguably some of the most exposure on campus (due to tours, etc.) should be one of the nicest and cleanest looking. It's money well spent in any capacity when it's your money making building to prospective students/parents/athletes.

Is it money well spent?   I mean, I thought attendance has been climbing like crazy to the point where there isn't near enough dorms for new frosh.   :dunno:

Maybe spend a bunch of money on a bunch of really nice new dorms.

If I was 17/18 and they showed me our union, then showed me a really nice dorm that would be mine next year, I wouldn't be able to care less about the union.

Had we kept Old Stadium/Ahearn as the focal point of our athletics dept. that corner of campus would be absolutely elite.

I'm not saying that dorms aren't important, because they are very much so. A new dining/dorm facility similar to the Derby complex is in the works, so hang with me on that aspect. Other than the dorms, there is one place that all tours go through and that is the Student Union. It's close to the new guest/visitor center and will be one of the nicer student unions i've seen if it all goes as planned. It's also within a stones throw of the alumni center. I've toured/designed many, many buildings such as this and it's important that we do this one right and not screw it up like we did during the last renovation.

Had we kept Old Stadium/Ahearn as the focal point of our athletics dept. that corner of campus would be absolutely elite.

I also agree. It's a shame we let that aspect of our history and campus decline like we have. On the brighter side, the new welcome center will be a nice fresh touch to that portion of campus.

Planned yes, Financed no.

I think they were ready to propose it when projected campus enrollment jumped again and they opted to go back and increase the size.
I have heard it is going where Kramer dining center currently is.

After first opening its doors in 1956, the K-State Student Union has offered various amenities to services in what is referred to as the campus’ living room. The 240,000 square foot building cost just $5.4 million, even though it would cost an estimated $42 million today to build a student union of this great size. In April of 1986, the K-State Student Union was distinguished as one of the top five student unions in America at the time by the New York Times. Presently, the union houses two separate theater venues, a massive food court, a bookstore, convenience stores, and outside bank ATMs. The attached Recreation Center also enables students to take a break from studying to use the bowling alley, pool table, and golf simulator.

This is funny because $5.4 million in 1956 is the same as $46,431,463 today.
