Was impressed with the meet.
Kynard wowed, put on a show. Was impressed with the other high jumper, too. And there were a few pretty good long jumpers. Overall it was pretty cool.
They have the Big 12 Indoor Championship this week on Friday and Saturday.

Pretty good conference indoor meet for KSU. While I haven't studied it that closely, it would appear that the men might be a couple of athletes away from a title town posting.
But that's always been a KSU track issue, so many years where just a couple of more athletes would have meant a trophy.

Low track recruiting IQ, are all Big II teams on equal footing benefits wise, are all track scholarship's partials?

no they aren't all partials, but for the most part yes they are. Essentially each school gets 12.5 for men and 18 for women T&F scholarships to split between not only the entire T&F team but the cross country team as well. It's completely up to the coaches how those are split.
-
Just looked through the Indoor Results.
A big fat Zero in the Men's:
(Day 2)
60
200
400
1000
1 Mile
3000
5000
60 Meter Hurdles
High Jump (Ouch, I mean OUCH!!) But good showings in Long and Triple Jump
Now, there could be a gazzillion reasons for this, but we didn't even have anyone even make participation ribbon status in the 60, 200, 400, 1000, 1 mile run, 3000, 5000. That's just a huge hole for not scoring, and yet the men still scored 95 points.
Admittedly I don't know enough about team make up to say why this happened.

Talked to a nicer girl once a few summers ago about track. She did her undergrad at UMich and came here to continue working on her sport (unsure if grad asst or what). My summary of the convo in reference to tge coach us that he is spectacular coach but doesnt recruit with emphatic energy. Not sure how accurate that is or if I misunderstood things.

Looks like Rovelto may have got the message from watching WBB and Tennis and Mens Golf coaching changes. His recruiting has really jumped up in the last year. There are some freshman on the squad already threatening school records. Akeyla Mitchell, Terrell Smith, etc, bright future I think :excited:

Is it possible that Cliff was influenced by the John Currie Traject-O-Meter?
I pine for the day that K-State builds a new indoor facility for football and converts the current indoor facility for football to an indoor track.

Women finish close second to UT in Big 12, men a dismal showing except in the high jump.
-
Getting tiresome to see the men languishing down in the middle of the pack or worse.
-
i've never seen a game where herrera didn't eff up
As in Kelvin?
-
So the K-State women finished 2nd at the B12 indoor, the men last. The women scored 4 points at the NCAA meet and the men 0 . . . a few weeks ago, I forgot to discuss this at the time.
-
So?
-
Just expect a little more.
And . . .

You have a solution?

Ya, do better, sounds good, right?

Yep

Let's see if they can pull it off. :crossfingers:
-
It's going to be close, but the Texas women have FIVE runners in the 200 finals, we have 1. It's always the damn numbers that kill us.
-
It's going to be close, but the Texas women have FIVE runners in the 200 finals, we have 1. It's always the damn numbers that kill us.
Yeah, it doesn't look good.
-
Texas just has too much right now going into the last 3 events. It may come down to the 4x400, but it could all be over in the 5000.
So close.
-
Best we can hope for is that Mitchell puts in the run of her life in the 200, and we pull out a points miracle in the 5000.
-
The men just have no final day horsepower, this gets old.
-
Texas scores 23 in the 200, takes the lead. 121.5 to 118.5. We score 6.
If we can pull out a miracle in the 5000, and another one in the 4x400 it may happen. Long shot tho
-
I just looked at the 5000. Barring cramps, it ain't happening.
-
Yeah, just not enough
-
The last gasp is a first place in the 4x400 and a dropped baton by Texas.
-
2nd, outnumbered again. Good effort.
-
Men next to last. It gets old seeing K-State men's track at the bottom.
-
Women's team ranked 10
Men's team ranked 22
Ho hum :kstategrad:
-
Honest question. If Cliff is such a stud track coach, why are his best results in field events? Track and field, afte all.
-
Once you get past the first few teams in the rankings it's basically participation ribbons.

I don't understand. Does this mean that we are not recruiting talented athletes? We just recruit average athletes?

Akela Jones is the real deal - she could score 20 points at the national meet by herself. That alone would likely put the team in the top 10.

Sorry I missed this. What I meant was we have a few stellar athletes and some filler, whereas schools with lots of success have an entire roster of stellar athletes. Our coach is still very well respected and people want to be coached by him, but it's almost like Cliff and CO would rather have a few great athletes to spend their time with than many with little time. /IknowIdontMakeSense

This post is pretty funny wrapped around edn's posts about recruiting.
Also Rovelto is a heralded high jump coach, javelin throwers aren't going to come to K-State solely based off of the fact that Rovelto has coached 3 Olympic high jumpers here.

I just had a nice conversation with a young lady who was a grad assistant a few years ago...made sense based on the individual success we've had versus team success.

I doubt it, but you can never tell with track. Looking over times/rankings it seems we're very good in field events but not good running events.

Yeah, IDK how well we'd do at the national competition, and so much rides on getting as much of your team qualified to be there to even get points. From the ranking that came out today (and unsure how rankings in track work, it seems to have some cumulative proprieties to it) we only moved up 1 spot after winning the Big 12 championship.
http://www.ncaa.com/rankings/trackfield-outdoor-women/d1/ustfccca
And teams like Baylor and Texas are above us (though albeit just right above us).
I think though the exciting thing is Rovelto was happy we won it a year before he thought we'd be good enough to win it.
“I thought we were a year away because this is an extremely young team,” Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto said. “It is so hard to win a conference title. But this group did not want to wait a year. They wanted it now. They competed their guts out.”
So maybe next year will be pretty special
-
It's always a numbers game and a log jam at Nationals. You pull off just a few top finishes you're in the hunt.
-
Track and Field News bases its rankings on how they think individuals for schools will score at the national meet. They haven't updated since the weekend, but they had K-State tied for 9th in their last ranking. But, to get to the national meet, you have to qualify via regional meets and there are always some top 10 athletes who don't make it (injured, have a bad day, etc.)

Watching online and also watching the highlights. Absolutely embarrassing attendance in Lawrence.
-
I would be surprised if any track meet ever had more attendance than the participants' parents

Track meet attendance smack talk is a new low for Dax. Unless it's the Drake relays or nationals or something, nobody GAF. Followed my brothers track and cross country meets at ULM.

The last time Kstate hosted there was 3000 plus there.
It's a P5 conference championship track meet.
Of all the things to go angry Tuck on.
Sad
-

Why, because you don't like it?
Dax is right about that meet last weekend, I ran in high school meets with more people.
-
I watched some of the live streaming and the highlights and expected a championship meet at beautifully generic Rock Chalk Park with KU having a pretty good to very good track program. I expected to see a pretty decent crowd there, it's not that big.
Outside of the finals Sun night with a decent smattering of people clustered around the finish line. There was nobody there.
-
95% of track crowds are family and friends or middle school/HS track kids, but yes sometimes people show up. Not many track fans out there that just go to a meet to go to a meet.
-
I remember when track meets used to be significant events and fans used to attend. KU Relays were a really big deal in the 80s and before for example, now not so much. I don't think sports fans in general are that interested anymore.
-

Do you use ULM football games to make sweeping generalizations about football attendance trends?
-
No, because I've been to meets at Arkansas (power house program), Sun Belt conference meets, University of Wisconsin, KU, K-State, Big 12 meets, Drake Relays, Footlocker Championships, National Championships, etc. Attendance just isn't a big thing unless it's a major event and even then, it's mostly family and friends. It's just not a sport people come craving to watch for fun. I enjoy it because it was part of my life for so long, but there's not many people out there that want to watch a guy run 8 laps. It's got a NASCAR feel, minus the white trash.
-
Lol, it's not like I was expecting to see tens of 1000's of people jammed into the stadium. I just didn't expect the place to be empty.
Again, the last 2 times Kstate has hosted at peak times there was easily 3-4,000 people at RV Christian track.
There was 20,000 at the Pac 12 Championship.
-
track is boring so its not really a surprise that no one wants to watch it
-
Baseball is boring AF, lots of people still watch it.
-
don't compare baseball to track, that's beyond dumb
-
don't compare baseball to track, that's beyond dumb
Yes, I said it was exactly the same.
Once track meets start rolling through the finals on the last day, they can be very exciting. It looked like there was maybe 500 people at KU for the finals. All one side was completely empty. At a school with a good track heritage, with a men's team in contention for a title.
-
ok
-

But nearly everything you mentioned there is either a major event or at a place that takes T&F very seriously.
-
That's just my perception of growing up around it, is there would be some nice sized events, but nothing like i'd see like on Friday night lights. A huge sample of the ppl I met at these events were family members/friends, which made me always wonder where a sport like that would be without them. I met very few just casual fans at most of his events. Just my perception.
-
There was 20,000 at the Pac 12 Championship.
That's not a fair comparison since it was at Eugene. The birth of track and field, nike, and prefontaine. It's one of thee very few places that really appreciate the sport.
-

I didn't say nor even imply that there needed to be 20,000 in Lawrence. But the RCP track seats 4-5,000 people. There was about 500 give or take there.
It was the Big 12 Championship, KU has won conference titles, they have won national titles, their men's team was quite strong this year. I expected a little better showing at least for the finals on what appeared to be a beautiful evening.
-
That's fair
-
College conference track meets where you have a rooting interest in a team competing for the championship are very fun.

Yes. I am also curious where a sport would be without parents to provide offspring to compete. Haha :D

I'll always know TJ for his cringy performance as a slam dunk judge for the basketball program's bootleg version of late night two years ago.

I watched some of the meet on ESPN.
I hoping that when they convert the current Football indoor to the indoor track, that it looks half as elite as Arkansas' indoor track.

They aren't banking the track are they? That would would be an elite move. So, I assume not.

Arky and/or A&M would be nice to replicate. But, I imagine we'll dial it back and it'll be closer to Kentucky's (not bad, but not great either).

Given the number of indoor meets K-State has, I think they should put in a ramped track.
-
Gene will probably announce it as banked and build it flat.

It would be cool if both Kynard and Shankar competed in Tokyo, but the standard is now 7-7 3/4 (2.33) and Shankar's career best is 7-6 1/4 (2.29). But, he's still got some time...
