Title: Straight talk ("honest") about Kansas Ave. Mexican Restaurants, Kansas City, KS
Post by: Pete on February 11, 2013, 12:19:43 PM
As most of you know, the Kansas Avenue / Argentine Boulevard region of Kansas City, Kansas, is the worlds greatest collection of authentic Mexican restaurants.  Probably even better than Mexico City, but I have never been to Mexico City and will likely never go (why would I, when I can go to Kansas City, Kansas, see what I am saying?).  This hidden gem is just sitting there, under our noses, and hardly gets discussed openly and honestly.  THAT ENDS NOW!

I have assembled a list of greater Kansas Avenue Authentic Mexican Restaurants on which we must compile information.  We will gather knowledge about every single one of these restaurants.   In this thread, we will post our honest reviews of the each restaurant on the official list.

The official list may be modified if we discover additional restaurants, or if any restaurants are closed for health code violations, destroyed by arson, shuttered by the IRS, or any other unfortunate circumstance that seems to afflict Kansas Avenue Mexican restaurants.

To qualify as a “Kansas Avenue” authentic Mexican restaurant, the place has to be near the Kansas Avenue and Argentine Boulevard corridor.  The restaurant must be an authentic Mexican restaurant.  Tex Mex can GTFOOMF.

NOTE:  Many of you have visited restaurants on this list already.  DO NOT LET YOUR PRIOR VISITS CLOUD YOUR JUDGEMENT!  We need fresh eyes on this rough ridin' thing.  Also, take pictures, because they are worth a BUNCH of words.

The official list:

Tierra Caliente
813 N 10th St, Kansas City,  KS

Ninfa's Tortillas & Taqueria
964 Kansas Ave, Kansas City, KS

Tortilleria San Antonio
830 Kansas Ave, Kansas City, KS

Art's Mexican Products
615 Kansas Ave, Kansas City, KS

 Birrieria Michoacana
Taqueria Mexico
719 Kansas Ave, Kansas City, KS

Reyna’s Panaderia
727 Kansas Ave, Kansas City, KS

El Pollo Rey
1101 Kansas Ave, Kansas City, KS

Taqueria Las Arenosas
1203 Kansas Ave, Kansas City, KS

El Camino Real II
1147 Argentine Blvd, Kansas City, KS

La Piedamore
1150 Argentine Boulevard

Tierra Caliente
813 N 10th St, Kansas City,  KS

Facade:  Good.  The turquoise cinder block really “pops.”  The gated front door is a nice touch, and they had a sandwich board on the sidewalk with pictures of the food!  A delightful combination of professionalism and sketchiness.

Décor/Ambience: Good.  It felt like we really were in Mexico.  Ceiling fans with no blades, exposed outlets, water marks on the ceiling, empty vending machines….yet, nice pictures of matadors, Jesus, Mary, and other delightful Latin scenes.  The tables were clean and chairs were not sticky.

Service: Average.  I would have rated this higher, but the waitress failed to keep the juke box filled with Mexican pop hits for the full duration of visit, due to her attending to her two toddlers who were ramming their stroller into the table next to us.

Food:  Excellent.  As soon as we ordered, they started hand-making our tortillas.  The food was great.  The salsa Verde was awesome.  The menu was steadfastly authentic, with no “Tex Mex.”

NOTE:  I did not try the Mole, but I will....I will....

EPR pro tip, neither the beans, the salsa, nor the 8,000 tortillas they give you with each order are worth a damn.  consider yourself lucky if they happen to have an avacado for sale at the counter.  also the wings aren't worth getting.

I've heard that just getting the chicken from EPR then going down the street to some market for the toppings and tortillas? Obviously not a pro but i really want to try it!

the tortillas and the salsa at epr are fine. just fine.

also, i want some recon done on one of the sauces at sa's across the street that tastes kind of metallicky and is like orangish with two almost separate liquids where one looks like grease/oil and the other is aforementioned orangish liquid. scared to know what it was but also curious. made me shudder and did not eat more than one taste of it.

are you sure because there were two similar looking salsas and this one both looked and tasted just incredibly off. like half oil and half salsa. it was gross.

Clams suggested Bichelmeyer's, and it's near the Kansas Ave neighborhood.   I will consider it.  If someone wants to go and review it, very well.

I am focusing on the Kansas Ave. strip.

Gotcha, Do not know the area.  Also, any of the sauces/salsa's that have orange are habenjero(?) based.  They usually food process it, if the oil in it was separated it may have just been sitting a little while.  The food processor usually emulsifies it.

well here's the deal though with the SA orange salsa type stuff...i'm pretty sure that they had a couple that were similar colored but one was just weird and oily and tasted just horrible. i'd be slightly surprised if it was just a habanero based salsa but i guess stranger things have happened.

pete- please review the san antonio carniceria and tortilleria next sometime soon. it's right across the street from epr. make them tell you what is in the weird oil salsa thing. take pictures of all the salsa things there too.

this is possible but i swear they also had a fourth mystery liquid. could've been emulsified cow brain for all i know. it looked off and way different from the other stuff. was immediately right from the cashier/where you order. idk you guys maybe i imagined it or maybe it was just a standard habanero salso but i have strong reservations against those possibilities. no doubt in my mind that pete will get to the bottom of all of this for us though and for that i thank him.

I am not sure if you're doing this to purposely limit the scope of your investigation or out of ignorance to the rest of the great Mexican places in KCK. You can eat at a different mexican place every day for a month anywhere along Central ave up to Minnesota or so. Armourdale is certainly the little Mexico of KCK, but the Hispanic population is pretty heavy North of there as well. For you tourists who come to the 'dotte for the Mexican food, don't hamstring yourself by focusing on just one area. Thumbs up to Cire for mentioning Bonito, that place is solid.

That being said, Pollo Rey is great as was mentioned before. I'll do a brief one of Taqueria Mexico for you

Atmosphere is good, and looks like a pretty average mexican joint inside. Clean bathrooms are always a nice surprise.

Service has always been good when I've been there. Even when moderately busy I don't think I've ever had to wait more than 10 minutes for my food. There may only be a couple people on the wait staff that speak English, but they recognize that I'm white so I have never had to order in Spanish there.

Food is great, beef tacos and chicken enchiladas are my favorite. The enchiladas are pretty close to a tex-mex style, but hey you can't argue with good food.

Pro tip: It doesn't hurt to brush up on a bit of Spanish if you're going to adventure to some of these places. Odds are, you'll be able to get by with English in most, but the really tiny joints might only have a couple people working and you'll probably be the only non-Spanish speaker they accommodate all day. You can always get by with pointing to whatever you want on the menu, but I think they appreciate it when I'm not full on gringo when I come in and order. It goes without saying that you shouldn't have the "this is America, you should know English" attitude coming in. We may be in America, but you're on their turf.

El Pollo Rey
1101 Kansas Ave, Kansas City, KS

Facade:  Excellent.  It looks like a freaking barn.  There is a big rack of hard-wood by the front door that they use for the wood grill.  It was oak when we went, but I bet they take whatever hardwood they can get.

Décor/Ambience: Average.  The wall of pre-paid calling cards really spices up the place.  However, we could not hear the Spanish language televisions, and there was no Latin music being played.  It was clean a place.  One fun part was watching the guys salt/pepper the halved raw chickens at one end of the food prep area, then just throw them down the line and land them on the grill…excellent hand-eye-chicken coordination.

Service: Average.  It’s fast food, and there are three menu choices, not much to it.

Food: Very Good*.  The asterisk is because you only have three menu choices; Grilled Chicken (half), More Grilled Chicken (whole), and Buffalo Chicken Wings.  Each comes with tortillas, pork and beans (various parts), pickled red onions in a baggy, and a puree salsa.  On the table they have two different flavors of bottled super-hot habanero salsa.  Technically, there is one other menu option, you can buy a whole, raw, avocado (not sliced) as well.  We saw one guy buy the avocado when we were there, but didn’t get a good look at how he tackled it…they don’t give you a knife, so he must have made do with his plastic fork or spoon.  The preferred method of eating the chicken is to tear it apart with your hands and plastic fork and make your own tacos.  However, we did see quite a few people just dive into the chicken with their hands, as if at KFC or something.

The two Latino kids in that picture just destroyed their chicken....no tortillas, no non-sense.  Just dove in with their hands and went to work.

Steve Dave's six-year-old, and Limestone's six kids would have been all "I don't like bones, where are the nuggets."   You could tell these kids appreciated what they were being given....an inspiration to be sure.

Tortilleria San Antonio
830 Kansas Ave, Kansas City, KS

Facade:  Good.  I like the bull heads.  I bet they would sell you a raw bull head if you really wanted one, so truth in advertising right there.

Décor/Ambience:  Good.  This place is a grocery/butcher shop/taqueria…so you basically walk into a small grocery store and an area with dudes making tortillas.  Then there is a counter to order food, a bunch of tables to sit and eat, and a large meat counter.  Loads of mounted heads of various wild animals are up on the wall.  One of the more interesting features is a separate counter where you can buy different pieces of fried pork, though I have no idea what “pieces” they really were. Pretty diverse crowd.  Some families doing their shopping and grabbing lunch, plenty of business people on their lunch hour, etc.

Service: Very Good.  It’s essentially fast food, but they were all very nice.  The nice part is that you can get in and out of there fast, and it’s good for to-go orders…good take away containers for sauces and condiments.

Food:  Very good.  I had an Asada Torta and Taco, both were really good.  They also have burritos.  A friend got a Barbacoa burrito and said it was fantastic.

how was SA's orange salsa?

It was good, very hot.  I preferred the avocado green one the right of it.  Same amount of heat, but a bit more flavor.  I didn't try the yellow habanero on the left.  I can't imagine how hot that must have been, given the strength of the other two to the right of it.

El Camino Real II
1147 Argentine Blvd, Kansas City, KS

Facade: Excellent.  Hand painted signs and abrasive colors abound.  I really appreciate how they clearly state that this is El Camino Real “#2” (they have three locations in total).  This is useful, because if you get kidnapped and blindfolded, and dropped off in front of this place, it would be handy to know which one you are at.  BOOM.  Problem solved.  The murals are nice…sharp looking guys making tortillas and just cooking it up.  Makes me trust them.

Décor/Ambience: Excellent.  Where to start?  Check out the pic of the dining room.  It’s late February and not only are there still Valentines decorations, but also Christmas lights on the wall.  Crucifix was a bit smaller than I’d normally like it to be, but sufficient.  Just at the edge of the photo you can see the juke box.   The juke box was pretty old school, and loaded with Latin music.  There was a large hand-written sign on the juke box declaring “QUARTERS ONLY!!!!”  Apparently they had experienced problems with that in the past.

Service: Very Good.  They were friendly and quick.  Our waitress had shaved off all of her eyebrows and then hand drawn them back on her forehead, but like half an inch higher than where the originals were located.  That’s attention to detail and a real commitment to look her best (or at least what she believes is her best), and I appreciated that.

Food: Good to Very Good.  I tried an Asada taco, Al Pastor taco, and a Carnitas gorditas.  They were each very good.  However, there was only one kind of salsa, and it was really smoky chipotle flavored and strange to me.  They didn’t offer a tomatillo version, which was disappointing. Overall, it was good and I’d eat there again, but I do not think it was better than San Antonio or Tierra Caliente.  However, Camino Real has a really big menu, and they make a ton of other traditional things and main stream American stuff like fajitas that are probably excellent.

did they have barbacoa (de borrego, como dios manda)?  i mean, if they have consome, they've gotta have barbacoa, but where was it on the menu?

Barbacoa was on there.  I need to start getting that, and then just add a taco or two to sample.

What are your favs?  I will start getting them.  These places are so cheap, it's crazy.

in central mexico, all of the barbacoa stands throw a free sample taco down in front of you as soon as you sit down.  it's great.

the ones i miss the most are: barbacoa de borrego with green chile salsa (no tomatillos), or red jalapeno salsa if you can get it (you can't).  carnitas (puro maciza), good with lots of salsas.   torta de pierna natural.  cecina, same salsas as for barbacoa, but it isn't as critical.

but i could go for a lot of stuff on the menus you've been posting.  sopes, huaraches, even just a nice queso fundido with a good salsa.

i don't know what is available.  but if you can find any of the stuff i mentioned, eat it.  i would definitely go back and try the barbacoa, but it sounds like you might have to bring your own salsa.

i bet some place has cecina, keep an eye open for it.  oh, man, keep an eye open for tortas ahogadas as well, you lucky devil.

Restaurant officials did not return phone calls.

It's all so (confusing)
When salsa looks good but its made in meade

It's drivin' way out to KCK!

One thing I haven't seen on any of these menus is chile rellenos. They are one of the first things I try at most Mexican restaurants. Always important to know whether they are made with real green chiles or poblano peppers. Poblano peppers tend to be meatier, which makes it easier to stuff without falling apart, but they really lack in flavor IMO. Green chiles on the other hand are thinner and more difficult to keep whole, raising the craftsmanship level, but the flavor is undeniably better.

Something to look for even if you don't order it is the enchiladas. Do they offer the option to add an egg on top? If not, not an authentic Mexican place. Also, do you get the option of smothered in red or green chile (real green chile sauce not tomatillos)?

One last opinion. Ground beef is tex-mex (though they will offer it most authentic places because of dumbass costumers). Always go with pulled/shredded or cubed. If the only option on a dish is ground beef just turn around and walk out.

Apologies about the tardiness of this installment.  As most of you know, I am a very important business man, with many business meetings that keep me very busy.

Ninfa's Tortillas & Taqueria
964 Kansas Ave, Kansas City, KS

Facade: Very Good.  It's charming.  Nice little awning, faded red paint, cinder block / Morton building exterior.  I'll tell you what, I bet that Ninfa's favorite bird is a Cardinal, and so they were like "hey, let's put a freaking Cardinal on the side of the building, because it's Ninfa's favorite bird!"  Done deal, Cardinal on the side of the building, rest is history.

Décor/Ambience: Excellent.  The festive orange paint and open view of the kitchen are fun, but the best part of the decor is in the form of the bright bluw Parkay squeeze bottles on every table.  If you haven't been here before, they are the first thing you notice....and immediately ask yourself "what the eff is that all about?"

Service: Very Good.  They were all very nice.  Our waitress had a camo K-State hat.  No joke.  She said her Dad owned the joint, and so her grandma must be Ninfa or something.  Not really sure.

Food: Good.  Ninfa's might as well be called "Gringo Steve's Tex Mex Restaurant, with a couple of Authentic things."  Maybe they have off-menu stuff that I am not aware of, but most of that menu is straight Jose Pepper's.  Flour tortilla's are given early in lieu of chips, with a puree salsa that is pretty similar to the salsa at El Pollo Rey.  Everyone sort of loads them up with Parkay and/or salsa and munches on them before the food arrives.  The tamales are authentic, and very good...they are the only thing that saves this place from being thrown off the list for being too Tex Mex.  You can buy them in bulk as well.  The crispy fried flour tacos looked decent, but are California style and don't really belong on this list.  I was just turned off by all the flour tortilla items.  Flour tortilla's are not too common in Mexico, seems like Ninfa sold out to the Flour Man.  They serve breakfast all day, which is nice.  However, another person at my table ordered the Huevos Rancheros and the eggs were burnt to a crisp and all brownish all over.  How the eff do you ruin eggs?

Also, do you get the option of smothered in red or green chile (real green chile sauce not tomatillos)?

hey, pete.  i like you a lot more than whoever i just replied to, so i'm going to reply nicer.  my friendly advice is to just evaluate stuff on how it tastes, not on whether or not you think it is "authentic".  for one thing, you don't know what is authentic, and for another thing, it doesn't matter.

I'm merely repeating what was told to me by a Mexican chef at a cooking class that I took in Mexico.  I was told that in Northern Mexico (the crap hole and pit of despair of all of Mexico) they can't grow corn as effectively and resort to flour.  I was told that 90%+ of the rest of Mexico prefers corn over flour.  Please correct me if I was mis-informed.

I should add a disclaimer that I don't consider the dirty ass border towns of Northern Mexico to be authentic traditional Mexican fare.  I hope that doesn't offend anyone.

Looks like I was accurately informed.  (Maize means corn, boys).

Quote
Maize has been the most basic necessity in the kitchen for centuries. It is the most planted crop in the Mexican region. The country grows more than 42 different types of maize. In turn, each of these types has several varieties whose number is estimated at more than 3,000 by the International Center for the Improvement of Maize and Wheat (CIMMYT). The characteristics of each breed are varied according to soil conditions, the relative humidity of the environment, altitude, and even how it is grown. Although some of the earliest evidence of maize cultivation suggests domestication took place in several places at the same time, it is likely this process was linked to people who spoke Oto-Manguean, although it has questioned the origin of Mexican maize.

Either way, maize is the basis of most Mexican cuisine, with some exception in the culinary traditions of northern Mexico, where wheat is taking the place of maize as the cereal base. The primary way in which maize is consumed in Mexico is the tortilla, but it is also a necessary input for the preparation of almost all types of tamales, atoles and snacks. Furthermore, the maize used for tortillas can be ripe and dry, but it is also consumed fresh and mature (maize), or soft and fresh (xilote).[9]

Tortillas are consumed daily. Because they are very popular, most tortillas are made in factories with machinery, but they can also be home-made, especially in small towns. Tortilla factories are very common and can be found in any city, village, or settlement, and there are places where there are several in a single street. Tortilla production starts from early morning because lunch is the main meal of the day for most people. In Mexico, lunch is eaten between 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Some supermarkets or grocery stores also sell tortillas, and in such places they can be bought throughout the day.

Tortillas come in several different flavors and colors according to the kind of maize used. Tortillas come with all the traditional foods of Mexico, though not with all the fillings that are used these days.

In northern Mexico and much of the United States, "tortillas" mean wheat flour tortillas.[citation needed] They are the foundation of Mexican border cooking and a relatively recent import. Their popularity was driven by the low cost of inferior grades of wheat flour provided to border markets and by their ability to keep and ship well.[10]

Corn FTW.

the part about nortenos eating more flour tortillas (really, it's not everywhere in the north, and in most places in the north except sonora most people prolly eat more corn than flour) and most of the rest of the mexico eating mostly corn is true, but it's more nuanced than that (like some foods you normally eat/make with flour tortillas no matter where you are; and everyone everywhere tends to eat what they happen to prefer, be it corn, flour or bread, all of which are commonly available everywhere).

it's also not true that northern mexico is a shithole, or that southern and/or central mexican cuisine is more mexican than northern mexican cuisine.

it's also true that it seems harder to make a good corn tortilla than a good flour tortilla.  most flour tortillas are at least decent.  a lot of corn tortillas are horrible (some are great).

You have it backwards.  There are "American" style foods and even restaurants who claim to produce "American Fare" (e.g. J. Alexander's, Houston's, etc.).

They are saying that their foods are broadly recognized as "American."

Corn Tortillas (maize) are by far and away more common across Mexico than flour (wheat)....and as such are a more traditional Mexican food.  Similarl to how Hamburgers with cheddar cheese and bacon are a more traditional American food than corned  beef on Rye,  but you'll find as much or more corned beef on rye in neighborhoods of NYC than you will a burger.

I like all tortillas and their cousins.  A fresh corn tortilla is great and imho better than flour.

Authentic food is pretty nebulous.  You'll find it very hard for people to agree what qualifies something as authentic or not.

It was with a great measure of trepidation that I called Pete to get involved with this "Straight Talk" project.  But I had several questions that needed answering.  Unfortunately, I find myself left with new unanswered questions.

At approximately 11:21 I called pete to meet me at El Pollo Rey.  I was going to jump head first into this project and boy did I.  I met Pete in the parking lot of this place and we got to work.

1.  Ambience.  It is pretty great.  The parking lot smells of a wood fire.  My jacket now also smells like I was burning off brush out on the north 40.  But it is a good wood smoke smell with a hint of food to it.  The restaurant has a great grill being covered in quartered chicken behind the counter.  Promotional posters for the next norteno concert are on the windows and Mexican television is playing loudly on a t.v. over the sodas cooler.  No music was a huge minus but the adorable 8 month old girl with pierced ears behind the counter made up for it.  A-

2.  Food.  Pretty great.  I got the half AND ordered the whole avacado to go with it.  This even threw a veteran Straight Talker like Pete a curve.  The avacado was sectioned lengthwise and the nice lady behind the counter even let me look at the slices and decide if I wanted it./  Kind of like a sommelier handing you the cork and pouring a taster.  Except I didn't get to actually taste it.  I went with Pete's suggestion of pulling the meat off and making mini tacos with the rice, chicken, avacado hunks, pickled onions, corn tortillas and salsa.  Which however was pureed to a fine apple sauce like mash that made it look almost dessert like.  This raised a new question in my mind.  Did they in fact run their salsa through a food processor?  Is this authentic?  Does this give it better flavor (the answer is no, IMHO).  I have got to find out.  The pinto beans with the hunks of pork in it are pretty average.  There was a lot of fat in there, I'm not going to lie to you muchachos. The other downside to the food is the lack of a "crunch" i.e. no chips or other such items.  But the chicken does taste as good as advertised.  I could have easily taken down a whole bird.  B+

3.  People.  Pete adeptly noticed a business man take down a half bird in about 4 mintues, foregoing anything but his hands and an appetite for grilled chicken.  Lots of workers sharing wholes.  taking down real Cokes in glass bottles.  Pretty quiet though.  I guess the cold weather has everyone in kind of a funk.  B

Anyway, this has been Straight Talk featuring LSOC.

Possibly looking to hit one up today and not sure where to start.

Sometimes I don't know if I will have the chance to do so until I am sitting in the neighborhood and found an extra 30min and don't have the time to read the thread on my phone.

Facade:  Average.  The old Taqueria Mexico had a bad ass sign painted across the side of it, but these dudes went low key.    This place is all about the food.  No flashy murals.  Personally, I like murals and crap, though.

Décor/Ambience: Average.  It’s a pretty well put together place, having been previously the Taqueria Mexico.  Seemed clean, and kinda modern relative to a lot of the places on this list.   However, no juke box, no Telemundo, no crucifixes, no shrines to the Virgin, and no left out-dated holiday décor combined to leave me wanting.

Service:   Very Good.  Junior, the proprietor of the place was great, and hooked us up with complimentary stew  (more on that later).   Our English-as-a-very-distant-second-language waitress was very nice, and patient as we mis-pronounced every single thing on the menu, and asked like a hundred questions about how stuff was made.  Her eyebrows were not painted as high up on her forehead as I normally like, but she did pay attention to her appearance.  She coordinated the turquoise eye shadow, nail polish, and ear rings flawlessly.

Food: Excellent.  It’s a very traditional place, loads of stuff on the menu here that you will not see at Carolos O’Kelly’s.  The owners are from “Central Mexico” and the specialty is the Birria, which is a stew , in this case made with lamb.  It’s pretty spicy, but very flavorful.  Junior hooked us up with complimentary cups of stew when we were asking about the specialties of the house.  He was rough ridin' pumped about it.  They served it with corn tortillas, but he said that on the weekend they make extra special corn tortillas, and he seemed to suggest that if we ever tried them it would blow our minds or something….again, he was pumped.  They give you chips and salsa, with a mild and a hot.  The hot was a verde, which was pretty good.  The guys I was with ordered carne asada tacos, and carne asada enchilada.  Both said they were really good. I shot the moon on this one, and ordered a  Molcajete on the suggestion of my waitress.  What a rough ridin' spectacle this thing was.  It’s severed in a big stone mortar (called a Molcajete, coincidentally).  Huge hunks of meat hanging out of it, and a whole green onions, with a big ol’ pepper in the middle of this bubbling stew of spices and stuff.  It was really good, but difficult to eat.   Pretty good pic of this thing below.

Doing Las Arenosas right now.   Will report back later

Back later:

Taqueria Las Arenosas

Seemed very much like an old school cafe with much better food.

(https://goemaw.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi825.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fzz177%2Fcnscasey%2F20130415_1232420_zpsa37a46a9.jpg&hash=f3dd2b34f3175a1ec158348b4e9ff44fdab72300)

As far as service goes, I was one of only 5 or 6 ppl there, so I was taken care of very quickly.

The place smelled fantastic.

Before going in, I had decided that I was going to try the Barbacoa if they had it, since it seemed to be discussed quite a bit in this thread and I haven't had it outside of Chipolte before.

Half the menu was dedicated to Tortas, which I have never had before.  As good as the Barbacoa was, I will probs drop back in this spring/summer and try a torta.

(https://goemaw.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi825.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fzz177%2Fcnscasey%2F20130415_123228_zps201664ad.jpg&hash=1b8d16cf1e05882183393a33bee1db9f7477da90)

I ordered the barbacoa with the corn tortillas and it came with refried beans and Spanish rice.

(https://goemaw.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi825.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fzz177%2Fcnscasey%2F20130415_123830_zps50891561.jpg&hash=a93852e87a7136a8d6d0a8b1e4311c6be20acc4b)

The Barbacoa was really flavorful.  Much more so that I thought it would be with a description of "Steamed beef".

Also, they had two salsas.  Their mild was actually really sweet and unique.  I liked it a lot, but spent most of my time on the hot.  The hot was served in a mustard bottle and was yellowish orange and thin.  It almost looked the color of a really thin melted cheese(color, not consistency).  It was fantastic.  Like, really really, smother-your-barbacoa-rice-and-bean-soft-tacos in it fantastic.

I really enjoyed the food.  If the OP's list wasn't so long, I would be going here once a week this spring/summer.

I'm pretty sure that kck has a bonito michuacan.  Carnicerias should be on the list.

They have a busy website:

I love beans.   Don't get me wrong, they were normal.  They weren't a culinary innovation or anything, but considering that their job(imo) as a part of this meal was to assist and not to lead, they did their job just fine.

Its at 299 S.10th St. just a couple blocks north of Kansas Ave.

The name is misleading since it's in a building now (former food truck). Pastor anything is my favorite.

**quietly Googles Gil Scott-Heron**

we almost lost detroit paul.

eff gil and eff detroit. i just made a post where i called pete(r), pumpkin eater and also used a twenty year old tribe rhyme from low end theory that included a reference to kid capri to describe his lack of posting in his mexican food thread. nobody acknowledged it. i'm like god damn van gogh hanging out with a bunch of belgians in the late 1880's in this thread. so frustrating.

pro tip: if you

were trying to be cool, you just lost the script.

Thanks rays Apple market but I really don't need your buy ten gallons get a free milk punch card. Pretty sure I'm not coming back but thanks for the concern.

Hey Pete, what the eff man?

OK, two things.

First, I have lost a BUNCH of weight during this dieting binge.  You should see me naked.  I'm starting to look pretty hot.

Second, I am nearing my weight loss goal.  Once I hit that, I intend to get back to a once a week update for the rest of the summer.

To sum up, I am looking good naked but have a little bit longer left before more updates.

Went to El Torito II today.  It's not Kansas Ave, it's off Central.

https://maps.google.com/maps?q=Supermart+El+Torito+II,+Central+Avenue,+Kansas+City,+KS&hl=en&sll=37.6,-95.665&sspn=60.480903,114.169922&oq=el+torito&t=h&hq=Supermart+El+Torito+II,&hnear=Central+Ave,+Kansas+City,+Kansas&z=17&iwloc=A

There's a grocery store (supermart) you have to walk through to get to the restaurant.  It's, from my perspective, a pretty typical Mexican grocery.  There were a variety of beef cuts in the carneceria that I'd never heard of.  They did have "flank" for under $4/lb.  Also like a ton of the cutest little Mexican babies/kids running around.  They are the best.

Anyway, I'm pretty much a noob at this so take this review with a grain of "sal," if you will.

The seating area of the restaurant is a small room, but looks pretty new and clean.  Tile floor, fresh paint, two flat screens playing a "telenovela" in the corners.  Also vintage B&W paintings of "banditos" and such (cool wood frames, too).  Tables are clean faux marble.  Staff was friendly and bilingual.  I chose to use English so I didn't make my friend uncomfortable, but also because what if she asked me a question and I didn't understand?  Would be really embarrassing.

I was pretty hungover so to drink I ordered an iced tea.  Pfft, she said no and laughed right in my face!  So I ordered a Coke instead.  It was like a real ass coke in a big bottle.  Nice!

My friend recommended the tacos and they didn't have tamales so I went tacos.  Got two asada and two carnitas.  They serve them plain, and you add the cilantro and onions and salsa yourself.  I screwed up and forgot to put lime juice on them which I usually do.   :curse:  Both were pretty damn good and when I left I felt like a I drank two light beers.  Like a small food induced coma or something.  I could take a nap right now.

The only bad thing was this really obese KU fan came in and he kept licking all over his hands when he ate.  Like sucking his fingers and just being really gross.

Anyway, I'd go back for sure, but only after I sample some more places detailed in this thread.  Pictures forthcoming.

Shame on all of you. A KCK taco thread and no mention of Tacos On Wheels?

Its at 299 S.10th St. just a couple blocks north of Kansas Ave.

The name is misleading since it's in a building now (former food truck). Pastor anything is my favorite.

After Paul's dead-end suggestion on 10th street, I decided to stay on 10th street, but a few blocks south of Kansas Ave, and I found a gem....

El Poblano Taqueria
1003 Osage Ave. Kansas City, KS

Facade: Excellent.  Animated poblano pepper man, full menu tacked to the front of the building, security bars, their phone number listed in THREE different places on the front of the building, LOADS of blight….DELIGHTFUL!  Basically a home run here.

Décor/Ambience:  Good.  It’s half miniature grocery store and half café.  There is a little bar area around the cooking area, and a separate area with tables in toward the back.  The bar area is where the local dudes hang out and shoot the crap and stare at you and presumably make jokes about you and laugh their heads off….at least that’s what my colleague and I think that they were doing.  I do not know how frequently they get guys in slacks and dri-fit golf shirts, but I’d wager we were the first in quite a long time (if ever).  They have a wall-o’-international-calling cards that dwarfs El Pollo Rey.  You want to call somewhere south of Texas?  You get your ass to El Poblano, they will hook you up!  Also, their painting of the Virgin Mary was large, and prominently placed, unlike the little one tucked away in Camino Real II's dining room (sure, Camino has a shrine to Mary in the airlock area, but that doesn't mean you skimp on the dinning room...it's not an "either/or" type thing, IMO).

Service: Good.  They were friendly and quick.  They spent a bit too much time staring at us in disbelief, but other than that it was fine.

Food: Excellent.  I had a Carne Asada Taco, a Pastor Taco, and a Chorizo Tostada.  Each was amazingly good.  Unless you tell them otherwise, they load the tacos up with guacamole, verde salsa, cilantro, and onions.  The tortillas were great too, and they put the tacos in these little napkin holder thingies.  Adorable!  And, how about that side of radishes and limes with the taco….very fresh and delicious.  The serving plates were all logoed with various U.S. Navy inscriptions.  There is a really large and infamous Military surplus store a few miles away on Strong Ave. (“Mickey’s”), so I am guessing they went in there and loaded up.

Ok so like the sit down in the grocery store thing is open, but the "restaurant" is still under construction.  Was good though and will go back.

OK, so first off, these mother fuckers made a youtube video, so they are obviously badass.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yq18Q3iiZqA

KC Burger
1101 Kansas Ave, Kansas City, KS 66105

Facade: Good.  They kind of went modern with the graphics, but I get it.  These guys are kicking the door down on traditional burger joints.  LOOK OUT!

Décor/Ambience: Good.  It's very clean.  But, if it were up to me there would be more artwork.  Flat screens playing Mexican soap operas and stuff are nice, however.  Very popular with the locals.  I haven't ever seen it as busy as the youtube, but then I only go during the day.  Bunch of statues and figures of horses.  Does this mean that they are serving horse meat?  I don't know, but after having eaten here, I don't rough ridin' care....it's delicious!

Service: Good.  No reason to complain.  You order at the counter, and they bring you your food. No prob.

Food: Very good.   The burgers are all made of their own sausage.  They are NOT the ground beef patties you are used to.  This is basically tortas, but mixed with burgers.  Very creative stuff.  Really can't say enough about how good these burgers are....outstanding, but a bit odd.  Their "special burger" is rough ridin' awesome.  Just a great mixture of stuff (see menu pics below).

The majority of the time that I try new places on this list I am by myself.  I go back to places with work people, for the most part.

I have zero issues with eating alone, particularly at lunch.

I'm pretty sure that Johnson Drive and Metcalf has taken the crown of "Best mexican restaurants in one area"

Check this out (All within like .3 miles of each other)

1. Jose Peppers- Just ask Dlew

2. Chipotle - DUH

3. Don Chilitos - My mom used to eat there as a kid and its still in business, so you know its good.

4. Freebirds - Knock off chipotle but its good for a change up

5. Taco Bell - Best known mexican restaurant in the U S of A.

I went in about 1:30 for a late lunch.  Timing may have been to blame, but the chicken was somewhat dry.   Also, the beans they give you with your order are not fantastic at all.

6. Salsa Grill - Owned and operated by EMAW alums.  http://salsagrillks.com/ (http://salsagrillks.com/)

We just get them as a side deal and split an order amongst a few guys.  I totally agree that other places have better wings.  They are super tangy and have too much sauce, but it's nice to have one or two.

Only one new pic.  We hit El Camino Real II, which was extensively reviewed earlier in this thread.  They have the best TV situation in the Greater KS Ave area, which is to say 2 30 inch flat screens (one kinda blurry).

The audio was in Spanish, on Univision.  Very good commercials.

The Al Pastor was quite good today, but the waitress thought a colleague of mine asked for fish tacos, but he really asked for Carne Asada.  So, it probably got spit in when he got his replacement tacos.  Touch and go there for a bit.

The crowd was lively.  The Manager had his 5 young children in there situated in the best TV viewing spots.  We sat beside them, and one of them translated stuff from the broadcast to me.  I would ask why they called a foul, his Dad would yell something in Spanish, and the kid would say "I can't say that, that was a cuss word."  It was a pleasant time.

Call ahead, and make an order, OR just show up.  If you just show up on a normal day, you can prolly get half dozen or dozen no prob.

You are dealing with prolly the premier tamale outfit in town, so COME CORRECT!  I go to Reyna's  a couple times a month for a chalupa or gordita, but I ALWAYS call ahead for a big tamale order and have NEVER been anything but delighted.

Worth the drive.

Hey Pete, when I show up will they already be frozen?  Thinking on grabbing them on my way out of town but I doubt they freeze in a cooler as I don't have an elite cooler.   :frown:  Or if they will keep just a few days cold in my shitty cooler then maybe that's good enough.

I went last weekend! It was very good! A little understaffed but the waitresses did great considering. Salsa to start off with was spicy, so if you like that you will be satisfied. I had the prawns, I tried a bit of the tilapia which had a great sauce on it. They had fresh scallops on special which I regret not getting. 5/7

Kmachos is def Tex mex but the menu does have legit Mexican food too.  Just not tacos/tortas.

Their charro beans, and tortillas are the real deal.  Steak is great too.

Bonito sells day old tortillas that are unreal good.

that’s crazy, they are usually slammed at breakfast

maybe you went to the other california tacos?  there’s two completely unrelated restaurants with the same name

I’ve been engaged in my own little Kansas Ave vision quest over the last month or so.  Only hit EPR and San Antonio’s so far.

EPR - what can I say?  It’s good smoked chicken.

San Antonio’s - some of the best Mexican food I’ve ever had.  Went with a pastor burrito yesterday.  The meat was great- they do pastor right (chunks and marinated).  I also picked up some chips, which were hilariously portioned - one bag of chips (which was like, maybe $1.50) came with enough chips to honestly feed about 6 people.  The salsas were all great and each one (even the pico) had the heat I crave.  Cannot speak highly enough of this little establishment.  Next time I’m getting a torta.

Per Yelp, the best burrito in Ks is not on Kansas Avenue, it's in Overland Park.

Kansas (Overland Park): La Fuente Mexican Street Food

I went to california taco shop or whatever it's called on KS ave. last week and it was just ok.  does not rival san antonio's tortillaria

I've gotten tacos there once and they were pretty average. Taco Nacho down the street in downtown OP is better IMO.

It's best burrito, not taco.    :)

Go to Poio. It’s on 7th st and Osage, I think. Get the #5 and the cabbage slaw as the side. Use the slaw as part of the taco. Use the cucumber and carrot relish as part of the taco. Add the green sauce they give you in the little packet thing.

Most balanced and delicious pork taco you will have. I have no doubts.

It’s rough ridin' amazing.

Agreed, very good. I also like El Fagon, which is just a couple miles south of there at 105th and Metcalf.

Clams/Kansas Citians- if I have someone bring me epr on a Friday and want to warm it up for people to eat on a Saturday afternoon….how do I do that? Wrap in foil with a bit of water and warm up in oven?????

I usually eat it cold if I have leftovers but since that’s not an option, probably your way or throw it back on the gas grill for a couple minutes

I think the grill will give the skin a better texture for the leftovers.  I had leftovers yesterday and opening the container to the smoke smell was very pleasant.

was finally able to knock out bruncho at Jarocho. one of the better dining experiences in kansas city. $31 all you can eat small plates. the paella, ceviche, and empanadas were the highlights for me.

Went to Ninfa's for some Mex-breakfast today and was pretty disappointed. Pretty bland stuff. Great 'tillas though.

Mexican places are notoriously chincy with the salt.  Chile and lime is their seasoning

It wasn't that. The place just didn't have the soul in the food I was looking for. It was pretty pud and I had heard a lot of good stuff about it. Heck they didn't even bring limes until asked. Looked it maybe it used to be a good place that got popular with the tortillas and now that's really their focus getting them out the door in bulk.

Take away their tortilla and Ninfa's sucks.  Even with their tortilla, it's just meh.   :don'tcare:

I didn't want to say it but they were blaring 98.9 and felt like only a bunch of white people in there working. I was led astray.
