Title: Google Maps
Post by: ben ji on January 28, 2013, 09:45:22 AM
Is there anything better? I could spend all day looking at streetviews in random cities.

Why just today I was checking out an overhead view of Kansas State University and I noticed they now have street views of the quad and other paths around campus. Prospective EMAW Elites can now take a tour of our campus through google maps. I can only imagine how many jaws will drop when they turn the corner around Eisenhower hall and see the full beauty of Hale Library.

They have ski view cams on certain mountians that allow you to see what the slopes actually look like.

In my spare time I'm sort of a Google Earth junkie.  Have even been quoted in a couple books and TV shows about some of the creative applications of Google Earth.  I'm more of a dreamer than a code writer.  But ya I love it, awesome program.  Also it seems the platform has won favor and lots of independent parties are creating and hosting files that work on Google Earth.

I'm a map fanatic, so I don't do the streetview much, but I will literally spend hours looking at the streetgrids of random cities.  Also love to follow random highways and see what's along the way from start to finish.

i started a Google Maps Club of Greater Kansas City about a year and a half ago.  we meet once a month on saturday's at 8:00 am in the basement of a local church.  there are 75 of us now.  our meetings go for 24 hours.  we spend the time feverishly examining different interesting things found on Google Maps like odd rock formations, or streets of cities that no one has been to.  during one meeting we drove from LA to NYC via streetview, we had to keep switching out the person tasked with clicking forward when their fingers would get tired.  we love Google Maps.  i even made a t-shirt that says "Google Maps" on the front, then has my last name printed on the back, right above my Google Maps Club Team number (#24).  it's a blue short sleeve.  i'll usually  break the club up into 8-10 man teams who are then tasked with finding the most interesting Google Map anomaly; we vote to see who the winner is.  usually it's like a glitch where maybe Google Maps says there's an island there, but there's no island, or maybe it's a fight occuring on the sidewalk that someone finds when searching streetview.  this month i'm going to surprise the club, dip into our treasury coffers, and order pizza hut. can not wait to see the looks on the club members' faces when the pizza hut guy shows up with 15 larges in tow and all the pepsi we can drink.  pm for more details.

Question-

Do you feel a bit creepy when you look at friends/people you know houses on google maps without their knowledge? This doesnt include getting directions.

For example I was included in a mass FB message to get addresses for someone to send out wedding invites. I saw a couple of people I knew from college that moved away had posted their new Addresses, i was bored and looked them up on google maps to see what kind of place they had.

I felt a little creepy afterwards

This may be one of the most amazing clubs I've ever heard of. The educational benefits must be awesome. Club gear and competition are certainly essential elements of its success. But Pizza Hut? No better pizza providers in your area? Not meaning to start a new pizza sub-thread here, of course. Just sayin'

 :surprised:

the thousands of rectangular fields north of this (zoomed out) are rough ridin' weird too.  i guess canadians don't know about center pivot irrigation.

It's like 99% dry land ag up there.  They might irrigate some hay (alfalfa) fields next to rivers but that's about it.

i know, it just looks really odd with thousands of stripes when you're zoomed out pretty good.
