TITLETOWN - A Decade Long Celebration Of The Greatest Achievement In College Athletics History => Kansas State Football => Topic started by: ednksu on January 04, 2013, 08:25:56 PM

Apparently after the game at 3am two guys were hit on a bike taxi by a drunk. One was celebrating his 21st. Local news in phx made it seem like the dad was having trouble getting down to see his kid in the icu. News said one of them had a similar injury to Dale Earnhardt Sr.
-
Probably that cheapshotting Dick linebacker, he looks like the kind of piece of crap that would do something like this
-
Saw it on Facebook, made me sick
-
They've just had a brief story today.
I hope its not a financial issue keeping the dad from being down here asap. Dude said he was a single father since the kids were pretty young.
-
Those guys live 10 miles south of my hometown, they were drunk and took a pedal taxi home. Some drunk guy hit them on their way back to the hotel. One of them is in ICU Critical condition and the other one is in ICU serious condition. Spine injury and the other is a head trauma. Both guys are pretty young as far as I know.
-
Was it Suh again?

like I said the local phx news made it seem like the dad had obstacles to get down here. You have any comment? I hope it isn't anything the universiry has dropped the ball on helping with.

I'm not really sure about the Dads not being able to make it down there part.
-
Just watched the news here. Ones in serious in icu the other has the same injury that killed dale Earnhardt. Separation of the skull from spine.
My advice to emaws. Avoid cliffs, over passes and cabs on game day t&p's. :ksu:

I thought it was a rickshaw going bar to bar within the bar district, not out on a major road/highway. No wonder it got it by a car.

I don't know who Brook Lander is, but he now has a cockblock story to share with Deadspin.

She should probably go kiss the two guys. I think that would cure them reverse sleeping beauty style.

You think she impressed him?

incredibly hot witness
:dubious:
I don't think you noticed the sky in the background of that interview. The sun was coming up and it was probably close to 6AM.
That's what she looks like at 6AM after a hard night out, seeing dead people in the road, and then waiting around for another 3 hours for some local TV news reporters to show up and interview her.
-
I don't toss around incredibly hots loosely, Ira. Even if I tweet "you're beautiful" at 2:02 a.m., believe me, some thought's gone into it.

I was actually riding around in a petty cab not too far from there the night before... there but for the grace go i... Its not a "major highway" where they got hit, its a yellow line on google but we're talking 2 double lane, 30mph city driving here.

In the video, looked like a road that rickshaws shouldn't be on. Here they're limited to the brick roads of the bar district that are essentially big sidewalks.
-
Turned down a rickshaw driver walking to the pep rally. Good idea in hindsight
-
I definitely agree that they should be called rickshaws.
Pedicabs is stupid.
-
Pedicab seems like another name for a Sandusky Sleigh Ride...or maybe it's vice versa.

If you'd like to offer your support, a fund has been set up at http://www.indiegogo.com/michaelandcody . I don't feel comfortable divulging too much of their current status without permission, but there has been significant improvement since the accident.
Any amount is appreciated. Posting it on twitter or Facebook is also appreciated. They're both doing pretty well all things considered, but it's going to be a long road to recovery.
T's and P's guys!
Edit: You can donate at the below link as well. The URL suggests that it's only for Cody, but Michael will be receiving donations from there as well.

Perhaps you could share a bit. The one injury being compared to Dale Sr is pretty horrible to contemplate.

yeah that's no good. I have to believe that is the one who is still in serious/critical condition. So tragic. I am from the area and know that the whole community will come together for these guys. I mean, Great. Bend High School threw my high school a prom. And it was OK.
-
I suppose that I could comment on that, given that it's already made the rounds on social media in the Great Bend area. The injury to the spinal cord was initially incorrectly reported. The injury, while still very serious, was much less severe than originally reported, and Mike is doing very well right now and is stable. Like I said earlier, he's still looking at a long road to recovery, but his long-term prognosis is very good.
-
That's good news.

Also, initial post has been updated with the second link for donations. In addition, if anyone is in the Manhattan area, Johnny Kaw's is having a fundraiser for them tomorrow. If you're around, do the whole town of Great Bend a favor and buy a few drinks for Cody and Mike.

Update for those who are interested.
Mike is recovering from his spinal fusion surgery and is out of ICU. He may return to a hospital in Kansas as soon as next week. As I said earlier the Dale Earnhardt crap was incorrect.
Cody has yet to wake up from his coma, but vitals and everything else looks good. It's just a matter of time with him. Doctors and the family are optimistic for him.
T's and P's are appreciated, as are the donations. Can't thank you guys enough. :lynchmob:

fantastic news for the situation!

If anyone could get nailed by a drunk driver while riding on the back of a bike, while they themselves are drunk, die during surgery, only to live and tweet about it, it would be a Kansas State Football Fan.

:excited: was for good news that I didn't feel comfortable sharing at the time. I usually receive updates as they happen but I wait until they've been posted by a family member on a twitter or facebook account before relaying here. Anyway,
Mike's recovery is just fantastic, bordering on ridiculous/miraculous. Very good chance he'll be out of the valley fairly soon and it's pretty overwhelming
Cody opened his eyes today for a little while today. Still hasn't really woken up but all vitals are all good, ICP and swelling are way down (though some swelling remains) and I'm told that he looks much better.
Good news for both, everyone's still optimistic about Cody, and Mike is superman.

No, but some more good news on both of them.
Cody has been opening his eyes a bit. Still hasn't really come out of the coma, but he has been responding to pain now (doctors pinch him, he brushes their hands away) and he appeared to be tracking his sister's hand for a few moments while his eyes are open. Swelling is down considerably and most of the meds have been reduced. They're hoping to wean him off the ventilator in the coming days.
Mike is a goddamn miracle. He's in Wichita for a week or so or rehab before heading back to Great Bend. It's pretty remarkable. Doctors down there are just amazed at his recovery. Injury typically has a 95% kill rate and most of the remainder are left paralyzed and he's walking around and flew home on a commercial flight. It's pretty fantastic.

Exactly. We trot out terrible youtube video makers. If nothing else to these two guys, they became public figures and represented the university well. Not a lot of our fans could do that.

It can only be expressed through interpretative dance

I didn't hate it...the Classy Cats choreographing to it was lame, imo. I don't think that had much bearing on our recruiting though. :dunno:

REATTACHED HIS HEAD? wat. good lord.
Yeah, that is one heck of an injury. Never heard of it before.
recapitation :dunno:

Mike returned to Great Bend about this time yesterday. The remainder of his recovery will just be outpatient therapy and some periodic visits to the doc (not in Great Bend though, we have some pretty amazingly awful doctors there)
Cody's had some small responses the last few days and is still trending upward. Doctors say he's a couple weeks ahead of where most people in his situation are. All things considered, he's doing very well.
Very good news on both, keep up with the T's and P's guys!

Things are still about the same with Mike (awesome), but Cody's had a slight setback.
They moved him out of the SICU for about a day before he started having some issues. ICP was rising (the pressure kind, not the shitty rap duo) and the cranial fluid wasn't absorbing the way that it should, and it looks like they're going to have to put a shunt in on Thursday. For the layperson (probably not a lot of them, since we're all super-rich attractive EMAWS :kstategrad:), it's a tube that's going to run from his brain down to his stomach to drain some fluid.
It sounds pretty shitty but its very common for these types of injuries and it shouldn't change things for him much long-term, it just kind of sucks since they were sure that they weren't going to have to do this about a week ago. He's been pretty quiet the last few days but they attribute that to the increased ICP.
T's and P's, guys

Not a lot of news, just popping into say that Cody's procedure went well today. The shunt is in, there doesn't appear to be any signs of infection. He's been out most of the day due to the anesthetic used during the surgery, but the swelling and pressure are now at near-normal levels.
He's off most of the drugs now (just a few painkillers) and he no longer requires any type of assistance for breathing. Baby steps. Just waiting on him to come to. Aside from the whole being in a coma thing, he's doing fine. Vitals continue to be strong, he's been very active the last few days. We just need him to take the next step so we can accurately assess where we're at.
Mike still doing well, back home, waiting to get his brace and boot off. He's in good spirits.
Thanks for the T's and P's, guys, it's appreciated!

Those two guys are awesome. Continued T's and P's.

Man, what a trip. Can you imagine waking up and realize it's been like a month or whatever since your last memory. "Hey what happened? What am I doing here". "Well son, someone lost their head and hit you guys on a pedicab, not necessarily in that order".
-

It's pretty rough ridin' creepy to think about.
It was a trip for Mike too. Last thing he remembers, he was on a pedicab right outside the hotel, completely shitfaced. That afternoon, he wakes up in the ICU with a bunch of people around him and a tube down his throat, his head fixed into place by the halo-brace. Dude thought he was in some twisted real life version of Saw.
And that was just an afternoon. Cody's going to wake up a month or so later and hear "Hey, uh, so Mike's head got cut off but it's back on now, and your skull's in your stomach. Happy February, by the way."

Small update on Cody, no infections from the shunt procedure, which seems to have put the brakes on the swelling issue. Pressure and swelling look great, he's really looking like himself for the most part. He has improved to the point where the doctors feel comfortable removing him from SICU and back into regular ICU into his own room.
Mike's superman.
T's and P's, will continue to update with new info as it's made available!

They're both firmly #burnitdown, FWIW, though I think Mike's trying to give oscar a chance. He's ended his boycott of KSU Cats basketball games during his recovery and is now very cautiously optimistic for Bruceketball's future prospects.
Cody's only had a few small responses but they've been encouraging ones. He hasn't really been conscious yet, according to the docs down there, but he's been opening his eyes for periods of time. This is going to be a long, slow process. Still trending upward, though the progress has slowed down a bit. Doctors are still feeling good about him, we're just all waiting on him to clear his next hurtle.
-
Just got a new update from his dad, he called to confirm that he has been moved back into regular ICU into his own room. He has been very active today though, again, he still hasn't responded to many commands. He's been scratching itches, responding to being tickled, stuff like that, but not much else.
-
I've gotta think his first words will be "goddamnit stop tickling me!"
-

Charged with two counts of felony aggravated assault, DUI, failure to render aid, and endangerment (for the pedicab driver).
As for what's going to happen, that's anyone's guess. FWIW Maricopa County is among the toughest jurisdictions in the US for drunk drivers.

Maricopa Co, isn't that where that one crochety old judge works that puts his prisoners in tents? I think he's a birther too, but that's beside the point.

Sheriff Joe Arapio. Yes he is a dumbass birther.

Great day for Cody today! Eyes were open most of the day, he appears to be trying to watch TV. With a little assistance from the nurses, they had him sit up and he was doing it mostly by himself, supporting himself by putting his hands on the bed. It also appeared that he was trying to stand up. He passed some sort of swallowing test today (har har). He also picked an ice chip out of his dad's hand today, which is another pretty big deal.
Doctors down there are pretty enthused about the progress he's making and in the next few days he will be evaluated by the doc and his team to decide whether or not they can move him to a specialized clinic.
No infections, fever is under control, all in all, he's doing great for the circumstances. Dude is a fighter and a true :emawkid: .
Mike's still recovering in Great Bend. It's goign to be a few weeks before he can get the neck brace and walking boot off (dude broke his damn leg and didn't even notice until he started physical therapy).
Keep up the T's and P's guys!

Little bit of a bump for Cody. His cranial fluid tested positive for infection today, so out goes the shunt later this week. Back into SICU again. Kind of frustrating but long term it's not a big deal, and the doctors are still pushing forward with neurotherapy. Still pretty amazed by him.
He ate some applesauce today, which is pretty exciting. It's the first thing resembling real food that he's had since the accident.
It's not really a setback, just a bit of a bump in the road. Gotta keep fighting.
Mike had a bit of a rough day, he's TSC to the core so he was disappointed in the 'Hawks tonight, but nonetheless excited for first place. :ksu:
T's and P's guys

Thanks once again for the updates. T's & P's always.
-
C'mon Cody!!!! Thanks again GB
-
Nothing major to report for Cody except that the shunt came out without complications. Vitals remain strong, just waiting for him to take the next step. Still in SICU, but that's probably best for him right now. Gotta make sure he gets the individual attention that he needs. They are still going ahead with the neurotherapy. Hopefully we'll see some major strides in the coming days. Timetable for admission in a specialized clinic has obviously been pushed back, but, all in all, can't complain on his part.
Mike's about the same as he has been. Walking much better. Might get his boot off for his broken leg soon. Trying to convince him to make the trip for Bruceketball one of these weekends. Still a ways to go for him as well.
Despite some setbacks for Cody he's still trending upward. Keep the T's and P's coming guys!

Well, we can add Peyton Manning to the list of EMAW celebrities. The guy has pretty much been Mike's idol since like 2001, so after the accident, I went into email harassment overdrive to the Peyback foundation, and it worked. Mr. Manning called Mike up today, had a little chat, and he's now confirmed EMAW, per Mike.
:ksu:
Cody's still battling down there. He's having the shunt put back in Tuesday, and he might be moved to Mike's BITB doctor's facility for therapy and rehab and the like soon. He's still technically in a coma, but they're still feeling optimistic about him. They really believe that therapy will have a big impact on him. Still very much in a wait and see area with him. Still no infections, vitals look great, cultures have came back negative for everything, etc. etc.
I'm planning on heading down there over spring break, hoping that we've seen some major improvement by then. I can say that he looks great, a million times better than when I saw him in Phoenix.
The family appreciates the T's and P's, guys, keep 'em coming!

Major T's and P's for Cody tomorrow. At about 8 AM our time, he'll have another shunt put in. It's pretty crucial for his recovery and therapy, so send something extra for him. He's started to respond to smells a little and has made a few noises, both of which are great signs.
Shunt procedure tomorrow is crucial for his short and long term well being. Hopefully everything goes well!
-
Definitely T's & P's from here.

Cody was moved into rehab today. Some progress today, but there's still a long way to go. I haven't had mch time for updates lately, and I likely won't in the near future. I'll refer you to
http://www.facebook.com/PrayersForMichaelTysverAndCodyClark?ref=stream for updates, if you want them.
Look for a bracket pool for the benefit of Cody and Mike here in the near future, hope to see a bunch of goEMAWers partpcipate. Stay tuned! :ksu:

Well, it's been a rough month for Cody. He's been battling various infections at various places and had to be moved from the rehab center back to the hospital. He's had some difficulties with the shunt and the regulation of the cranial pressures.
On a higher note, it appears that he's over the infections now (white blood cell count is normal, symptoms have stopped), and they believe that he's healthy enough to undergo surgery to replace his bone flap, which will happen tomorrow morning.
The replacement of the bone flap is a pretty big deal, lots of patients make rapid progress after the bone flap has been reinserted. There's obviously some major risk involved with opening up his head and putting a giant hunk of bone back in, but it's something that has to be done now.
Major T's and P's for tomorrow guys. We'll all appreciate it.
-
good grief i can't imagine what he's going through. stay strong fellow EMAW.

Forgive me if I'm being dense, did he come out of the coma okay?
Still comatose. He was making progress in rehab before a series of infections struck and he had to be hospitalized. He's been up and down since then. If the surgery goes well without infection, it's going to be back to rehab.
-
You and Cody keep fighting man, he's gonna pull through.
-
Thanks for the updates. My thoughts are with the family that is going through hell right now. I'm hoping the intracranial pressure subsides as soon as possible!!!
Godspeed.

Surgery did not go down today as planned. There were several emergency surgeries that took place this morning and the neurosurgeon was not able to perform it today. The new date is Monday.
On a brighter note, Mike got the OK to take his neckbrace off today. :ksu:
Great picture of them at the Fiesta Bowl, just before the accident. man I miss that red-headed piece of crap.

Surgery was completed about an hour ago. According to his dad, it went well. The flap is back in for the first time since the wee hours of January 4th, and if there's no infections in the next few days, he'll be moved back to rehab fairly soon.
-
I hate to ask this really tough question, what are they think his chances are for recovery? I'm holding out for a miracle where the guy comes outta this coma with a lot of his higher functions intact.
-

It's hard to say. They have said that based on his CT scans, they feel like he's got a good chance to regain a lot of his higher functions (don't get me wrong the damage to certain areas is very significant, especially at the back. I mean, the back of his head hit the frame of the windshield of a car that was going about 50 mph. Long-term, it's really hard to predict what he's going to be like. They are sure that he's going to have to undergo extensive speech therapy, including potentially relearning the English language.
The front of his brain was mostly unscathed. It's pretty much just the back-left quadrant of his brain. He's had difficulty moving the right side of his body, but that's beginning to come back. Dude's had a lot of problems with his shunt, infections, etc. that have set him back, but the doctors are still pushing really hard for extensive neuro-rehab. They believe he's got a lot left in the tank, it's just a matter of getting him into rehab and coaxing him out.

I hate to ask this really tough question, what are they think his chances are for recovery? I'm holding out for a miracle where the guy comes outta this coma with a lot of his higher functions intact.
It's hard to say. They have said that based on his CT scans, they feel like he's got a good chance to regain a lot of his higher functions (don't get me wrong the damage to certain areas is very significant, especially at the back. that sounds pretty good. the fact that he is young and i'm guessing smart and healthy (emaw related assumption) are really, really helpful. people in these situations can make incredible leaps and bounds over six months/one year after things like this. the infection/shunt stuff is the obv sucky/concerning but i don't think all that uncommon given the situation. really hoping this guy pulls through and is emawing hard at some bowl game a couple of years from now. speech is all left side so that is obv a concern. impossible to tell how much that's affected both short and long term until he wakes up, etc. hope all works out well for him.

well, good news for Cody. About ten days ago, Cody was moved from Phoenix to Meadowbrook Rehabilitation Hospital in Gardner. After a couple months of struggling with infection and illness, he's finally healthy and has begun to make some progress. He receives three hours of therapy per day and has already taken some big steps forward. After the plethora of infections set in, he had pretty much gone quiet, but in the past few days, he's begun to have sporadic response to verbal stimuli. He started and stopped clicking a pen on his father's command, among other things. It's exciting to see the progress. Doctors remain optimistic for him, and it looks like he's finally reached a point where he can move forward. He's not quite responsive enough to go to an acute rehab facility
Mike's still a stud, doing great. Cleared to resume high-impact activity a month or so ago and he's been showing off his skills on the hardwood at the Great Bend Rec. Only issue from the accident is limited motion in his neck, but considering that he was effectively decapitated a little less than six months ago, I'd say he's doing ok.

Great to see another positive update, GBEMAW. These EMAWs are truly amazing.

Good to hear he's closer to home. Fight on, emaw Cody.
-
Great to hear, hopefully the good news continues
-
After riding around on what very well may have been the same bike taxi the night before, this story has always given me the chills. I'm truely happy to hear that Cody's condition is improving.

eff off board, I am sure I rough ridin' want to reply.
Cody continues to make slow but sure progress. They've had him walking around in a walker for up to 15 or so feet, he's starting to make the transition to a trach-free existence, and he's had some puree foods and the like. He looks great. I haven't seen him for a while but his dad tells me that he's getting sharper and sharper each day. Quicker and more frequent responses to commands, just generally looks more alert, etc. Slow, but definitely still trending upward!
Mike is still about the same. Living in Great Bend, doing well, just sort of waiting for things to advance. Dude looks great!

Cody sounds like he's got a very high ceiling. Not surprising being an emaw and whatnot. This is all very good to hear...I know the rehab can be very touch and go when infections happen and that's so great he's been making such progress.
-
So what happened to the bastard(s) that perpetrated this?
-
Great news. Keep sawing wood, Cody. You will be farm humping again in no time. :emawkid:

I'm sitting here mouth open in amazement at the progress these EMAWs have made. I mean going from decapitation to a sore neck, and coma to walking is just unfathomable.

So what happened to the bastard(s) that perpetrated this?
sentenced today, about a year and a week from the incident. plea deal, 4 years.

He deserved it (and probably more). Thanks, as always, for the updates and pass on our good EMAW wishes to our guys.

Son of a bitch deserved it

I still can't imagine how much of an absolute piece of crap you'd have to be to not only get drunk and drive into people, but to then not even check on them but instead pace around in a parking lot trying to call your lawyer.
Glad to hear these emaw's are recovering.

Anybody got the article about the conviction of this massive tool.
-
Not sure about that one, Brad.
-
One of them has extensive brain injuries that will haunt him for the rest of his life. I don't remember which one, but the mom will have to take him into custody. He isn't even the same person. It's kind of bullshit that the stupid eff only gets 4 years in prison instead of more.

How hard did you have to try to find the post that would make you the biggest piece of crap possible?

I hope huskerpride dies of a slow dying death of a krokodil addiction.

I have a good friend who is the head chef at my company's cafeteria and the association, even in jest, with that piece of crap offends me.

the fact that his moniker is "husker pride" is the silver lining in all of this, really.
-
I kinda want to see to confirm my suspicion that HP is a piece of crap.
But on topic, we should focus on the amazing strides these EMAWs made over the last year or so. Its truly amazing when you start to think about the amount of damage that was done, the fight these guys put up, and where they are now. Congrats to their families and communities in supporting them. I can't imagine the ordeal of being a caregiver and/or parent in that kind of situation. Good to see the progress is continuing.

edn, great point. Guys are amazing!

Which one had his head cut off?
Man, and not that it was worth it, but talk about a lifetime pass to tell a whiner to STFU.
"Oh man, my day was awful...I had to work 9 hours....9 HOURS and when I got home my dog pooped on the carpet"
"Oh yeah, well one day I got my head cut off and stitched back on, but your day sounds pretty bad too"

For those wondering, mike is the one in the red. Cody is the one in the purple and grinning. Mike made it through the whole internal decapifation thing. Cody's been in a coma since the accident but he's been making pretty incredible progress

Been a while, and I'm not sure when exactly this happened, but Cody is officially not in a coma anymore. He's been walking and talking the last several weeks, and it's rough ridin' incredible. As someone who saw him the day of the accident and who has been in the loop every step of the way, this is incredible. He's walked hundreds of feet, I've had conversations with him on the phone, this crap is amazing.
I'm not sure what's next for him, but let it be known that he's doing way better than anyone gave him any chance to. Mike too, he's doing great (and plans to enroll as an official EMAW in the fall). This crap is incredible

Glasgow Coma Scale (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glasgow_Coma_Scale) is a funny thing and most people don't have a real idea of what a coma is. When that picture was taken, he was probably around a 9-11 on the Glasgow scale (which is still in a coma) due to a lack of verbal responses. It's a big deal to actually be declared conscious by a doctor.

Yeah, please eff off, k_m. We're still friends though

Aw man I saw this thread bump and was expecting to see an update from GBE saying "great news everyone, Cody is making great progress. Today he ramped his motorcycle over a 450 ft wide chasm because he is a complete stud and can do whatever he feels like"
But sorry to hear about that slobs, that is v sad indeed :frown:
