Influenza = fever, cough, sore throat, fatigue, muscle aches

Stomach flu = catch-all term for nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, most commonly caused by norovirus

I had to get whooping cough too when Mr SF was pregnant. If I didn't the whole family would have died.  Whooping cough, did I travel back to 1913?

There is a huge epidemic of whooping cough right now because dumbasses went anti-vaccine. What those selfish dicks don't realize (or care about) is that they will survive whooping cough or the flu just fine but some kid in chemo is going to die because they like the Ace Ventura guy.

The Christmas flu has now claimed a fiff victim.  Sent a squawk back to larryville to miss out on x-mas, downed a Des Moineser where she lay, slayed my wife before she rose again and I am fully recovered.  Only the heir declared the bug pud and carried on sticking every germ covered dog toy, pacifier and piece of carpet in to his gullet.

Do it for the kids.

Also, if you have sick kids do not call your brother-in-law and ask permission take them to the family gathering.  That is a bullshit question to ask someone with a newborn.   :flush: I told my respect sister-in-law that I would rather they didn't come but they did anyway.

I got a flu shot and had this weird 24 hour thing where I could only get out of bed to crap straight water every couple of hours or so. I had Christmas ham in my stomach that wasn't digesting at all. I didn't even roll over because it unsettled my stomach and made me feel like death was in my digestive tract. It probably wasn't the flu, but what was it????

Flu shot is for the influenza virus that causes coughing, sneezing, and fever.  If you were shitting water then you either had a rotavirus or norovirus, both of which cause the condition of gastroenteritis, which presents the symptoms of vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach pain.  Those viruses causing stomach problems are the "stomach flu".

Don't think it is possible.

Did a little research.  There are a few types of rotavirus.  This is what little kids usually get.  Anyone can get it, but once you get it you usually build up an immunity so you don't get it again, or when you get it again the symptoms are greatly reduced.  It's mostly confined to kids because most get it when they are little.  If you've had a kid get it, you'd wish you could have given them a vaccine.  If it's something that you get once then build an immunity, I would think there would be a way to create a vaccine.  I've seen my cousin's kids get it.  If I ever have kids, I'd pay $1,000 per kid for a vaccine not to have to go through that.

I got this once a few years ago.  I was getting ready to head to the gym to get buff and within maybe ten minutes I was on my couch shivering and achy and then I barfed what I had just eaten to fuel my gym session and then I started basically pissing out my butt and none of my food would digest at all if I managed to eat.  It lasted less than two days in earnest.  It was rough ridin' mind-blowing.  The sudden onset and severity were really something.  Shooting water out your butt is a very strange sensation.  Pssshhh!!

Used to work for a crappy place that did PTO only, no "sick days". This dumbass receptionist would come in 2-3 times a year with a deadly disease because she didnt want to use her time being sick. I would immediately yell at her and demand to the boss that she be sent home.

pro-tip: almost everyone in the private sector does PTO and no "sick days".

yeah, and its awesome.

Why is it awesome to be sick on your vacation days?

Welp, I think I'm dying. It was nice knowing ya. First day back on the job and I had to leave early. Sore throat, fever, cough, and a headache. Is it the climate change from phx? Did a midwesterner/Scottsdale combo breeding session give me SARS? Is there a plague in KC? God only knows, but T's & P's are welcomed.

I really only call it the flu if I'm vomiting uncontrollably. A body ache, fever, and runny nose seems like more of a cold to me, though the fever might give it a different category. Is this wrong?

Well, according to the flu test administered at Minute Clinic, this is the flu. I haven't felt like vomiting but I don't have an appetite.

That was just a one day thing because I ate way too much Metamucil Clear and Natural.  It isn't either of those two things.  Actually further evidence of dynamite ultra genes on my part.  Pretty sure that dose would have killed at least 30-40% of posters here.  I live so others don't have to.

I suspect it's not true. That said, I have never given anyone a hummer, much less someone who has the flu, so maybe I'm wrong. Just tell her to hum on, and I guess she'll/you'll/we'll find out.

Influenza = fever, cough, sore throat, fatigue, muscle aches

Stomach flu = catch-all term for nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, most commonly caused by norovirus

Also, the flu shot only lasts 3 months. a lot of people get it in like August or September and then it's completely wore out by the time the flu really starts getting around. but, if you get the nasal spray live virus it lasts 12 months. BUT, the nasal spray has a small chance of actually giving you the flu.

I am really just getting to a good spot after coming down with the flu on Christmas night (sd, before you go accusing me of being sick with something else, let me say that it was confirmed by doctors). It was a real bitch to go through the rest of the holidays and be sick AF. Didn't get the flu shot this year because I was traveling the week the nurse was administering the shots.

I am curious if ksuduece's wife got the flu last year or not.

if you had gastrointestinal problems you didn't have influenza. if you did and the doctor told you that you had influenza I'd start looking for a new doctor asap.
I never said I had any GI problems! I said it was CONFIRMED BY A DOCTOR! THEY DID AN ACTUAL TEST!

I HAD THE FLU!!!!

They are called virus strains.

Quote
CDC has antigenically characterized 452 influenza viruses, including 398 2009 H1N1 viruses, 46 influenza A (H3N2) viruses, and 8 influenza B viruses, collected since October 1, 2013.

All 398 of the 2009 H1N1 viruses tested were characterized as A/California/7/2009-like. This is the influenza A (H1N1) component of the Northern Hemisphere quadrivalent and trivalent vaccines for the 2013-2014 season.

Also, the flu shot only lasts 3 months. a lot of people get it in like August or September and then it's completely wore out by the time the flu really starts getting around. but, if you get the nasal spray live virus it lasts 12 months. BUT, the nasal spray has a small chance of actually giving you the flu.

The nasal spray will not give you the flu. An injected vaccine is effective for longer than 3 months.

Quote
Evidence from some clinical trials indicates that that protection against viruses that are antigenically similar to those contained in the vaccine extends at least for 6–8 months, particularly in nonelderly populations. In some situations, duration of immunity might be longer, and such effects can be detected if circulating influenza virus strains remain antigenically similar for multiple seasons.

Quote
no preferential recommendation is made for LAIV4 (nasal spray) over IIV (injected vaccine) for any age group at this time.

If you guys would just read that 48-page CDC document in its entirety it would save me some time.  :shakesfist:

According to the Centers for Disease Control many influenza strains can absolutely cause GI problems along with the upper respiratory symptoms.  Although it is more common in children, many adults experience diarrhea and/or vomitting with the seasonal upper respiratory flu.

Started getting really bad indigestion Saturday night, ended up getting sick and staying up all night with the chills.  Been running a 101.5 fever all day, aches all over, but i can get some food down finally.

Might I have the influenza?   Its been so long... what are you supposed to do about this predicament?

Look at this list of high risk conditions. If you fall into any of the categories, see a doctor for a flu test and a Tamiflu prescription. That should keep you out of the hospital

Dont need blood. Just cough a bunch around the wort and call it "spontaneously fermented"

The timing of this Pandemic documentary on Netflix is crazy. I’m a couple episodes in and it’s rough ridin' nuts how quickly stuff could get bad. There’s quarantines starting to happen in China, Hong Kong is canceling school, and this is getting close to the busiest time of year because of the Chinese New Year.

I also saw something on reddit that they are exploring a possible case now in Denver. We seem to be getting really close to a tipping point where some drastic things might start happening.

https://bnonews.com/index.php/2020/01/the-latest-coronavirus-cases/ (https://bnonews.com/index.php/2020/01/the-latest-coronavirus-cases/) the timeline is interesting, new cases are added every few minutes.

agree with spracs that it isn't very lethal, probably won't amount to more than SARS.

Certainly on a gross basis. This one seems to spread a bit more aggressively, but yeah. I could kick its ass. The troubling part is that you can communicate it for like 2 weeks while being asymptomatic.

Also, reports are circulating of a case in Lawrence. Xpost Lawrence Is Hurting thread.
