Title: Amazon Prime
Post by: michigancat on November 27, 2012, 10:04:30 AM
So like, if you join Prime, can you stream all their video for free? Even the HBO shows? That seems like a ridiculous deal.

yes, if you are the primary Prime account holder you can stream all the Prime Instant Video free.

I have been meaning to drop my Netflix stream-only membership and do Amazon prime.

I work with a guy who recently did this and says it's great, and it's cheap.

You can also "rent" new release movies as well, and they are typically cheaper than the cable provider or xbox-live, for example.

If you still have a K-State email that forwards to you, you can get it for like half price I think.  I did that.

Per this thing, the student thing is now a 6 month trial with no instant video.  I signed up to it for $40 with it being exact same as prime a bit over a year ago

so, I guess you can't stream EVERYTHING for free. But what you can stream for free looks pretty comparable to Netflix.

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=s9_hps_bw_clnk?node=2864549011&field-is_prime_benefit=2470955011&page=1&sort=csrank&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-4&pf_rd_r=1KWDRY6X6WMQ5NRJYXMX&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=1420106122&pf_rd_i=2676882011

but the ability to rent the HBO shows is pretty sweet. the HBO shows were my biggest hangup to dropping netflix dvd's.

Its not at all comparable to Netflix. Significantly less free content. I keep forgetting to cancel my prime subscription.

Both prime and Netflix suck for streaming, but suck equally imo.  The purchased streamed movies and tv is cool though.

I have a student prime account because I enjoy the 2 day shipping and $4 next day shipping.  The streaming and book borrowing are kind of afterthoughts.

hemmy is right.  no where near the content as netflix.  2 day shipping though, i think that's the real draw with prime.  some people buy lots of costco type crap from amazon.

When the dumbfucks at Amazon and Netflix get their crap together where I can stream any movie they have I will join again.  Their selection of movies for instant streaming sucks.

Oh, you want to watch a new release?  Let us mail you the DVD/Bluray.  eff that.

Netflix has more content, and more importantly will be getting the new season of Arrested Development early next year. The 2 day shipping is great with Prime, though, and Prime costs less than Netflix.

there are thousands of sites that you can watch a show the same night that it aired in HD.  Just be careful what you click on.

I tried watching a show through one of those .eu sites last night on xbox's internet explorer and it didn't work because of "flash" or whatever.  wouldn't let me download flash.

I checked out Amazon on xbox and was not impressed.  Seemed like they had way less available than netflix.

Yeah, I got the same "download updated flash drivers" message as well.

I am hoping the .eu sites will move away from flash like other sites have.  It seems like I read Adobe (makers of flash iirc) are going to discontinue it?

Upload them to your amazon acct.  Even without paying extra, all Amazon customers get something like 5gig of free storage.  So upload them, add them to your player and re-DL.  Should work.

I recently had my trial end and my bank account charged the yearly fee of $99. Should I stay on as a Prime customer to check it out? Or get my full refund back?

I don't order stuff very often, so I'm not sure I'd be able to take advantage of the free shipping. I also don't have a kindle/ don't enjoy reading books off of a screen.

So the courier lost a package and i got a new one plus 60 dollars in free amazon goods.  I ordered something with that sixty bucks and the free two day shipping, it's a day late.   I wrote them an email saying I love prime, but the courier and usps deliveries need to stop because I had to sit at home waiting on  no package.  Free month of prime.  Amazon is fantastic. Although they do need only guaranteed shipping from ups or fedex.

Is it one hour or just same day? I'm sure they have a huge distro facility in the valley and could run a truck or two of same day deliveries a day pretty easily.

Also see point 2.

same day, not the one hour.  same day is in 27 cities.

i thought about it/googled it more and understand it now.  they had already built the dispersed warehouses to accommodate two day delivery.  once they had those, same day isn't much more than using a courier instead of a carrier.  amazing that they have so many items stocked in so many warehouses.

Dunno man, you throw some special materials in there, some VFD's, and a nuanced control scheme and you're looking at 40-48 weeks no problem.

I lost my original Amazon account when I forgot to change the email before I quit my last (first) job.    LOL    Whoops!

Those were wierd times to be sure, I remember in 1999 my new boss was telling me that they just got email.   We had the Nextel brick phones.

Another thing I'm late to.  Should have been building points since I was a kid.  Like sucks to know I'll never draw a sheep tag unless maybe I live to be 100 years old.

One thing I jumped early on (Palm Pre) was a flop.

I found one of these with 7up and Sunkist logos on them in my office last spring. There were no assembly instructions so I put it together just using a picture from Google, I was so proud. Imagine how pissed I was a month later to see the rim and wires from the scoreboard swinging from the broken backboard because a kid "wanted to dunk."

Same, also caved in a got the Philips Hue color smartlight just to mess around with. $40 for a bulb is at least less insane than $50. Love using the normal bulbs for my auto on/off outdoor lights and those don't cost insane amount (like $10/bulb for 3). Using those bulbs in that way is actually much easier and cheaper than having hard wired timers or switches.

Anything good?  I have a $10 credit only good for Prime Day after having spent $10 at Whole Foods over the weekend.

Not currently on any sort of Prime Day deal, but I'm leaning towards Bacon Bubbles: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00A56DUQA

Our Amazon Prime driver has started marking all deliveries as “handed to customer” so they don’t have to take a picture & delivering 6-8 packages at a house to let the owner then get them to the right place. We’re missing multiple packages & the other day we got packages for other houses in our neighborhood.

I had two TVs delivered without returning one. The second TV showed up a week after the first and the delivery guys were like "well, you can keep it" but I still sent them back with it.

Is it normal for the Fed-Ex person to attempt to put our package inside our house? Since installing a Ring camera, we've noticed they usually attempt to open the front door. When its locked, they seemed annoyed and leave it on the porch. One time it was unlocked and they set it just inside the door. I was home at the time and was like WTF.

When checking out, get your phone out and look annoyed at the screen and tell the cashier the piece of trash app won’t refresh. Bet they just give you the ‘scount. I realize you don’t need the money but like, as a social experiment

Haven't had it for the past month with no negative consequences.  Ordered some stuff for the first time last night, picking free shipping that should've taken 5-6 days now w/o prime.  Got the alert this morning that things changed and it's coming tomorrow after all.

I'm not sure they have a mechanism to not do prime-speed shipping regardless of what you pick.

I usually get my packages in two days, and I have never had prime.  Also, most of the time the shipping is free unless I order some cheap crap.

Placed another order yesterday; had to order two for free shipping, but that's fine as I could probably use two and if not there's loads of free return places everywhere I walk.  Shipping was to be non-prime 3-4 days but got the email the same day that it's happening sooner and it indeed came today.

Amazon prime shipping - complete bullshit?

Since my family hates to travel, I got the Prime CC a while back. They gave me like $150 and I get 5% back. Only using it at Amazon and I still churn a couple other cards to suit my travel needs. Good deal for us since we don't travel that much and spend a lot of money at Amazon. I think I'm going to cancel it after seeing directly how much we spend just at Amazon every month.  :sdeek:

My average sale is around $40 and average COGS nets around a 30% ROI on that.   I would say he probably needs to move 300 or so units a month to really justify the hassle.

I don't know if it's a prime exclusive or not, but I've used free same day or early next morning delivery three times in the last month and it was incredibly convenient. Like when my docking station crapped out and I can't just go to the store for what I need.
