Post by: Dub on November 20, 2012, 09:51:34 AM

Quote
Kansas State and Arizona are among the eight teams that will compete in the Maui Invitational in 2014.

Tournament officials announced Monday that the field in two years will include Missouri, Pittsburgh, Purdue, BYU, San Diego State and host Chaminade.

Chaminade  :runaway:

Cool, but that's kind of a dogshit lineup for Maui.

do you seriously think that kstate should win that or are you just joking? it's really becoming hard to have a serious sports discussion around here anymore, imo. also, i'd put our % chance at winning it somewhere around 25. maybe less.

Mostly joking.  Would be silly to pick us against the field 2 years ahead of time, and I haven't looked at the other rosters & recruiting classes.  That said, I like our sophomore class, and they will be Srs.   I do think we should be good that year.  We will probably see a big drop the next year though.

realistically there are only four teams in that tournament that should have a chance at winning and they should all be equal in terms of talent, etc.  that means kstate should have a 25% chance. purdue, pitt and mu should not be any better than we are by the time this thing rolls around.

Had a chance to look.  Purdue is the early favorite.  Purple Cats are next with Arizona closely behind, then Pitt.  Missouri looks to be in trouble.  BYU is the darkhorse. :users:

as long as painter stays, i agree. pretty great purdue call by hiring him back when keady was getting ready to quit and they could've gone painter, lowery or keady bff and long time purdue asst oscar weber.

Series note: spanning four seasons, oscar lost his last 7 straight to Fatt Painter and Purdue.  SOP: Painter goes atm on oscar and oscar thanks him and asks for more if he's not too busy and is in the mood.

The upside is that Purdue is rough ridin' awful now and oscar has Foster and more talent across the board really.  So cats! :emawkid:

It must be comforting for MU fans to know that even if they were able to land Painter, they still  would be dogshitty.  Really helps with the "what if", I bet.

The nice thing is we are going to get 3 pretty good games from this thing. Purdue, Arizona, and Pitt/San Diego State are really good games to get. If we can at least pull 2-1 it sort makes up for that Beach performance.

That's exactly what he is, they even coached the same D2 school. Wooly won 73% of his games at Central Missouri from 85-91. Anderson won 75% from 02-14. Wooly at least jumped to D1 and took Texas State to the tournament and sorta "rebuilt" his alma mater La Tech before coming to fail miserably at K-State.

I guess Anderson did at least win the D2 national title, so its probably actually more like if K-State hired Bob Chipman after Kruger or Altman.

But yeah, Mizzou essentially punted their basketball program.

Nino one good play, then 5 bad plays, rinse and repeat

Ninos usually pretty consistent actually.

Yes I agree, usually he is,  but tonight was not one of those nights, he killed us in key moments of the game.

Neither was a bad shot in itself, but we obviously don't want Nino taking the last two shots of the game.

Look at it on the bright side though. you have a pretty talented team, and you've lost two to solid opponents. Its highly likely that LBSU makes the tourney, so you guys should not be hurt much from that loss, and certainly this loss to Arizona will look good on you, because of how hard you made Arizona work for it. There were times in the second half where i felt like KSU was on the cusp of taking over the game. don't hang your heads. you are wildcats, alot to be proud of.

Dang it and horse farts.  It was so close.  Think about it folks we nearly beat the #3 team in the nation. We are a very good team.  When we were down by nine, I thought get out the shovel and fill in the grave hole, we are dead meat, but holy cow we fought back.  That to me this is the most impressive good point of this game.  Still loosing sucks.

KSU's point total + Edwards missed lay-in + Edwards missed oop = Arizona's point total.  Edwards and Foster are both so soft inside - ugh.  I suggest drill in which they are forced to take it to the hoop repeatedly against 5 swarming dudes dressed in Michelin man costumes.

OTOH, we are a seriously talented team, which is cool.  Not being outclassed by AZ was pretty fun, guys.  They could not stop Gip.  Wish we'd gotten him more involved in the O.

- Arizona has a lot of guys who shoot ladies set shots
- Ashley got away with at least 3 offensive hooking fouls, twice kstate got called for a foul immediately afterwards
- Arizona is really good at defense
- we missed way too many bunnies
- unforced turnovers mumped us out of possessions and led to easy points for Arizona, without those miscues we win comfortably

maybe not in a making the tournament sense but the conference as a whole has not wrapped itself in glory this noncon.  With the cats not closing the deal v. the sandcats, the hawks getting overrun by the platooncats and UT's point guard breaking his wrist before UT plays the platooncats I don't see many signature wins for the Big 12 unless OU can really make some hay in Atlantis and beat UF or Wisconsin.

The hawks have a pretty tough non con but I only see a possible game vs MSU as good to great win and they may not even get to play them unless this weekends Orlando Classic breaks the right way.

If the conference season turns out to be the dogfight it looks like it will we may well end up with a bunch of 11-7, 10-8 teams and fill up the 7,8,9 and 10 lines.

I've been thinking about this for a bit as well. How many bids did the big 12 get last year, 5? I think the league will have less of a drop off between the top and bottom, so staying in the top 5 (although it's a stretch to believe the big 12 would even get 5 bids again) will leave this team little room for error. I wouldn't be surprised if two really deserving teams are on the outside looking in come march. I hope we aren't one but it's certainly not unimaginable, even if we become a much better team than last year's.

It's encouraging that almost all of our defensive problems are caused by mental breakdowns, but it's discouraging that there doesn't seem to be any improvement so far this year. Take Nino for example, he hasn't successfully closed out on a shooter in the corner during his college career. Really doesn't seem like it's going to change any time soon.

Pitt has 2 baskets on offensive Reb tip-ins, 2 transition hoops and converted the 3 pt play, then 3 of their 4 3pt have been on dribble drive kick outs for an open shot. Also got uncontested layup.  That's 9 of their 11FGs.

Losing tonight will assure the first time since the 08-09 season we won't have a top 25 noncon win, and Pitt will probably be our best win. Have to make sure we have to win out and have a real good Big 12 season or we will be looking at an 8 seed or worse come March.

come on man

What did I say that isn't correct?

Waaaaay too knee jerky and waaaay too much emphasis on the negative effects of a close loss to a top 4 team. Non con AP top 25 wins won't be factored into a seeding discussion at all, no matter the situation. We play enough decent power conference teams that our noncon won't drag down our RPI too much unless we lose a few more of them.

our entire fan base will as well. they're young, still need to mature, rely on too many young guys, foster needs to grow up, big guys aren't acclimated to d1 ball yet, transfers aren't ready yet - give them more time, ran into two good defensive teams.  probably throw the officiating in there somehow as well

we lost 3 games in 5 days.  two of which we not only lost to teams we shouldn't have (theoretically, i mean, if we suck, then we should lose to them), but played like absolute crap.  the other game we lost, we managed to piss away a shot at wining by throwing the ball in bounds to the other team.  we're the only team in the big 12 with 3 losses (everyone else has 1 or 0).  and yes, there are a lot of sucky teams in d1 basketball.  a crap load of them, actually.  and we're one of them.

we lost 3 games in 5 days.

didn't they do the same thing last season?  or something pretty similar.  seems like they recovered ok.

i've seen this response a couple times tonight and i don't like it. we recovered ok to a 9 seed and first round exit in the tourney.
