I'm pretty interested to see what types of jobs will be opening with Google here. They've gotta have something for MBA grads.  :gocho:

I think the plan is to eventually build it out. How fast that happens will probably be determined by demand and how much the big ISPs decide to start rough ridin' with caps.

If I were in the area and I was poor I'd even switch.  5mbps for $25.00 a month for a year, then free for up to 6 years?  That's a pretty sweet deal.  I imagine quite a few people will switch from Time Warner just because of this.

Why is a $150 a month funny?

Because Google Fiber is only $70 for the same service, less than half of CenturyLink.

What will happen is barely anyone in Omaha will go for the service at that price, CenturyLink will point to the low signup numbers and proclaim that see, we were right, the average consumer doesn't want this "high end" service and will cancel all their plans to rollout fiber in other areas, which is what upper management wants because the upfront costs (CenturyLink is the old Sprint local telcos).  Then later they will scratch their heads as Google expands into even more markets.

It's the establishment ISPs in a nutshell.  They have decades of monopoly utility thinking still sitting in management so they're still averse to the concepts of "competition", "vision" and "risk".

Because Google is going to come back and want to sell a whole bunch of additional content.   If you bundle with CTL, the 1 Gig is only $80 bucks a month.   Consider that on the Enterprise side 1 Gig runs about $800 to $1200 or more a month and that's from a whole list of Telecom's and Cable Companies etc. etc.

Google with TV is $120, still cheaper than data only from CenturyLink.

Enterprise pricing and service is different than consumer.  And "ISP costs" have to be taken with a giant grain of salt, these are the companies that take broadband building grants from the feds and line their pockets with them.

google's business model is much different than a traditional ISP.  they're more a marketing sales company than an ISP.  their cost model is subsidized very differently.

Uh, you don't have to tell me this SPC, I understand it completely, and the broadband grants are pretty much a joke, and only cover a fraction of the actual costs involved, if they're even available at all to companies like CTL.

It all goes back to what I've been saying, companies like Google are not "Carriers of Last Resort" and thus do not have the same cost models and regulatory requirements.  They can come in and cherry pick the most lucrative potential markets and ignore others entirely and will have no repercussions whatsoever in doing so.

non sequiturs aside, if you don't think that google can offer sub-market rates on broadband internet service because they're selling all of the information that they collect from you using their internet and television service to marketing companies, and then using that revenue to offset any potential loss they sustain from the internet/tv business, then you're dumb

Funny you mentioned that....they just responded to another email from me and said that I should check out the KC star article from Friday, in which they note that Google regularly requires cities to agree to a non-disclosure during negotiations.....I took it to mean they are negotiating with Google right now.

Here's the article http://www.kansascity.com/2013/05/03/4216254/raytown-latest-city-promised-google.html#storylink=misearch

I get that.  I'm  assuming that they are going to have the same kind of delays in Austin.  I'm trying to get an idea of how long it's going to take to cover the area once they get going.

I get it next Friday.   A guy from work has had it for a few months and says its incredibly overrated. I'm more excited about the TV than the Internet.  There are times when Time Warner's signal is lacking and it pisses me off, hopefully that will be a thing of the past.  Also Time Warner's DVR is garbage.

right, i should clarify. i had time warner and the internet was fine. occasionally an illegal stream would take forever to download but other than that i had no complaints. fiber internet does seem faster, who knows how much. i think you have to have a special computer or device to really experience the full capacity of the 1GB that they advertise. i have a macbook and the speedtest.net results are only marginally better than what they were with time warner.

what i love is the cable. the ability to record 8 shows at once, the basically unlimited storage space, the user interface is great. the nexus tablet is great. anything you select to record is viewable on any tv connected to the network (that's not groundbreaking technology but i hadn't had it yet so it's awesome). it just beats the hell out of what i had with time warner, and i'm not paying much more than i was before.

Ben Ji's got a lawyer buddy who does the negotiations between Google and all the local cities in the metro.

Basically each city that allows google fiber to come in gets like 2% of each customers bill for allowing google to come in and tear up the city putting the fiber in.

Overland Park keeps asking for 4% and Google is all like "You cereal bro? Well I guess we will just sign up every other city in the metro"

It was not HD quality.  You can have the fastest Internet in the world and it doesn't matter if the source of the signal is limited.  A lot of people don't seem to realize that.

yup competition is an inhibitor to competition

There's a reason why other various media providers require its long term users to have to proactively call in and request to get the discounts and have huge "win back" and "retention" groups.   In most cases those "deals" are not given until they are asked for.

It would appear your buddy is full of crap.

I especially like the OP City Council's "Oh crap" moment after the fact.

Quote
Mayor Carl Gerlach said the council was surprised by Google's call for an indefinite delay at the Oct. 14 meeting. Still, the council pointedly passed a resolution calling for Google Fiber to set up shop in the city.

"Overland Park wants Google Fiber," Gerlach said this week. "the City Council is ready to sign on the dotted line. ... We're willing to wait as long as it takes."

Meanwhile, Time Warner and Surewest are all .

Exactly. I heard from a lawyer buddy of mine who does all the negotiations with Google that Kansas City went in just the opposite direction.  For every 1000 feet of fiber installed, we agree to club one baby seal. Love living in a red state. It's not Texas, but close enough.

Google Fiber proposal is on the table tonight for Overland Park, at the City Council meeting. (see link below under City Manager Bill Ebel).  The City Manager is recommending to the Mayor and Council that it be approved.

http://apps.opkansas.org/City-Government/Agendas-and-Minutes/City-Council/Agendas/2014/2014-07-07/agenda.html

If you know a Councilman, encourage them to approve it.  Or email the Mayor at [email protected]

Need to know if it's worth it to switch.  They recently installed all the fiber in my neighborhood.  They tore the living crap out of everyone's yard and blocked every road, it was an enormous mess.  I'm pretty happy with SureWest tv and internet speed, how is the fiber TV service?

Can't speak to the service, but yes, they tear the crap out of a neighborhood.  They did it to my old one days before I left.

The crew descended upon the subdivision like a bunch of locusts.  There were about 6-10 crews working 10-12 hour shifts.  They had it done in about three days, and they moved on.

All things considered, the crew that installed Time Warner in our old neighborhood was much, much more sloppy and took much longer.  But, yes, they'll dig a bunch of holes in your yard.

I work with a couple of people who live on the plaza who had pretty bad install experiences, but love the speed.  One guy is a pretty big torrent user, and it has been great for him.  Mixed reviews on the cable, apparently it didn't have AMC or something like that, and so they could watch zombies.

i reported my fiber cable tv being out and it took two weeks for them to figure out what to tell me, let alone send someone to fix it. so i had no tv for 15 days. i requested updates pretty much every day and not once did they reach out to me first. they're not making me pay for those days but it was not a very good customer service showing on their part.

it has a "live" button to return to live tv after rewinding/ff
it has a better placed mute button

one cool thing is that it has a weird sensor thing, so when the remote moves or is picked up, the backlighting comes on automatically.  and then it turns itself off automatically after a few seconds.
i've never seen anything like that in a remote.

Give me a reason to sign up for Google Fiber when:

1)  It will cost me $30 more a month for the equivalent CATV package I have with AT&T
2)  I don't need the additional internet speed  (everything I do I can accomplish with my current speed)
3)  It is a 1-year commitment.  Meaning I can't sign up with $10 down and change my mind before they are ready to install.
4)  I don't have a need to record 8 shows at a time.
5)  AT&T Fiber will also be in my neighborhood, and most likely provide competitive pricing (if not better)
6)  They will have to run new cable throughout my house when currently 2/3 of my boxes are wireless.

I will be open to signing up if I have a good reason to.

you can't watch tv on it, you can't set your dvr with it.  you can't even use it when away from your home network.  i guess it kind of functions as a remote control.  garbage.

you can't watch tv on it - on home wifi you can so basically worthless but I've found a couples uses for it....it's not every channel but it's a lot of them.
you can't set your dvr with it - you can
you can't even use it when away from your home network - you can look at the program guide  :excited: (and schedule DVR)

The contract with sure west (awful company)  kcfdwife signed us up for two years ago is finally up. Fiber being installed on Monday! Seriously can't wait. I've been super happy with it at the brewery, glad to have it at home too!

If you ever want to have cable and Internet that constantly blacks out,  has overall poor quality, and customer service that is beyond awful, sign a Contract with sure west.

Could be an ios thing....I'm not sure the Android version always did either.  I've used the streaming feature during multiple sport event viewing at the same time.

are you using both bands on your airport extreme router?  If your phone is on the 5 gHz band maybe try the 2.4 gHz channel.

One month in, the plusses are: lots of dvr space, faster speed downloads, better WiFi, more coverage with WiFi.

Minuses - slow channel flipping. Like real slow. Every channel seems to need to load and be caught up. Not being able to watch channels off koru property, and not being able to set the dvr while away are also pretty terrible.

Have had fiber for a week. Pretty great. Do not experience slow channel flipping. It's way faster than my old service. Internet is awesome, I avg around 400 gbps. Not bad considering I'm paying roughly the same per month but my old service had less channels and avg'd 25 gbps.

ya i think all of the tv boxes are small, i'm talking about the other box(es)

the network box and the storage box are combined into one with the new hardware

my friend in ks, in the guide, different stuff is colored differently- sports are green, movies are some other color, etc.  his previous channel list  shows up vertically, instead of horizontally across the bottom.
his guide moves slows, channels change slowly

Oh ok. My guide has different colors. Sports are green, movies are blue... At first it was annoying buy I like it now. Makes it easy to find a game etc... The rest of it works just like time warner, channels are lined of horizontally

I'd imagine some people complain because it was hyped so much, they expected it to blow their minds everytime they used the Internet/ watched TV. I'm just pleased it's well above average service with roughly average cost.

Customer service is awesome too. I love being able to chat with someone online rather than waiting on hold for 30 Minutes. I did have an issue with one of my boxes at like 9pm the second night we had it. I logged on, told them my problem, and they had someone here to change it  out in 15 min.  No way TWC has ever done that.

Yes, the free option is gone unless you're grandfathered in I believe. The "Fiber 100" or whatever they're going to call it will basically take the place of it and will cost $50/mo. I pay around $65/mo for 50dn 5up and bumping to the $70/mo gigabit is a no brainer for me.

Also, I will probably never sell my house now.  Guess I should have bought those high efficiency windows and junk a few years back.

The other good part about this is that all of your other providers will now magically be way faster and less expensive. I'll prob never leave Google because its fantastic and screw the other companies for gouging me all those years, but its nice having other options.

Yeah, I am actually seriously considering just keeping my current cable internet service as a backup solution in addition to getting google fiber internet.

Just had Google Fiber hooked up about a month ago.  It’s great.  And felt so good to mush Comcast in their fat faces once and for all.

I've been resisting the urge to upgrade to 2gig service because 1gig is already way too much for me but that I doubt I'll last much longer.

My experience is that if you email the crap out of your local officials and wait 8 years, then it all works out for the best.

Any of you guys going to give the new 20 gig speed a shot?  I can’t really think of a non-business use case.  I’ve double and triple checked our pron speed and it seems good, so I will probably stay with my current Google fiber arrangement.

Yeah, unless your job or whatever requires huge files to be downloaded or uploaded, 1 gig is more than enough. On a separate note, I got an email from them about a month or so ago saying my router was old and needed upgraded. I had that and the google pucks I got from costco spread around the house. They worked great and I never noticed any issues outside of a couple small dead zones. They sent me a new router with an extender and holy crap. Just the router and the extender hit my whole house and everywhere has at least 5 times faster speeds than I was getting. If you have an old router, i'd recommend calling them and asking for a new one.

I would like to qualify this by stating up front that I don't know anything about anything and am barely functionally literate, but I was once told by a network professional that the copper network cable in your house will prevent you from enjoying speeds above 1gig no matter what wild speeds your service provider is lying to you about providing to your house.

The only time I notice anything is if we have a bunch of friends or family over and the kids are all streaming games etc and the tvs are all going.

Even then I might complain that the 4k football/basketball/soccer game is struggling.

I could understand this point if you’re relying on Ethernet cables somewhere along the way, but at our house AT&T literally drilled a hole in our wall and plugged the fiber cable right into the modem/router. So idk how copper wires would work into the equation at all.

yeah, pretty sure they run all new fiber cables to your house and then you just connect cat 5 or 6 from there. The old copper stuff is just chilling there not doing anything, but what do I know?

Are you fiber from your router to your PC?  If not, are you copper?  If you're wifi, that could also be limiting it.  I had major service issues with AT&T about 8 yrs ago with my up and down speeds.  I was buying 100g speed and was only getting 30ish.  Their tech told me that the 100g is only for hard wire and that wifi was limited to approx 35ish, speed wise.  So, I would assume your router could be a choke point on new systems as well  :dunno:

I only have 300MB download speeds with current provider and my family streams and games simultaneously with zero issue. Maybe we will need massive dl speeds for the coming metaverse.

How does this work? I'm not a network engineer, but from my understanding even if they run fiber directly to the on premise equipment I believe your house would have to be wired with cat8 throughout. Cat8 is very new, expensive and uncommon for all but the most SD of SD's. Even with cat8, the runs would need to be less than 100 feet to reach those speeds. The max speed for the more likely Cat5e is 2.5Gbps up to roughly 300 feet or cat6 at 5Gbs. https://www.truecable.com/blogs/cable-academy/how-to-choose-the-right-cable (https://www.truecable.com/blogs/cable-academy/how-to-choose-the-right-cable)

In hardwired scenarios the port speed on individual consumer devices rarely exceeds 1G.  Wi-Fi 6 Enterprise level AP's can get up to 9.6G of throughput in optimal conditions, but your speed is likely choked by the capability of the end device itself.

In the aggregate, you'll need piles of users to even remotely threaten utilizing 20G's.

Google Fiber uses passive optical networking, so it's a best effort, up to network.

Goodnight, I love google fiber but that is dumb, you gotta be a business. Like many other here, 1 gb is plenty enough, I don't think I ever tax it.

I moved but I didn't notice a huge improvement per se in speeds, but in the next place it's definitely not centrally located it does hit a long way away. I did have a left over puck and wanted to add it just to extend out into the patio, but it didn't want to connect even after a factory reset. Oh well

I had a really old router that I got right when they came to my hood.  If I stood right next to it and did a wifi speed test, I would get around 100 which was plenty fast. The pucks would get me 20-25 depending on the room. If I test right next to the new router, I get 400-500 and everywhere in the house is well above 100.

Pucks at the house I could reliably get 800+, but I think they went through two version, Nest, and then Google, wifi, Nest was more smooth pucks, Google more edgy pucks, if that makes sense

this netgear wifi 7 mesh system can theoretically push 27 Gbps across 6,000 sq ft.  the bottleneck is at the device. most everything today doesn’t go beyond 1 Gbps

https://www.netgear.com/home/wifi/mesh/rbe972sb/

the “use case” for 20 Gbps isn’t 3 people using 7 Gbps each, it’s 30 users using 500 Mbps with enough bandwidth leftover for peak bursts.

So are you saying you'd hook that wi-fi directly up to the ONT in the garage or closet? Ohhhh, I see, you could hook a 2.5 or 5.0 Gb switch up and each keystone jack could go up to 2.5 or 5.0 Gbps until you max out at 20 Gbps for the network.

Oh I’m sure the Wi-Fi on both the router and my device is the main limiting factor. I was just making the point that I don’t think there is any inherent limitations like wiring in your house. It mainly comes down to the devices you use (and obviously how much the ISP throttles it).
