What are your favorites? Any type: bourbon, Tennessee whiskey, scotch, Irish, rye, etc.
For a sub-$50 single malt scotch, I really like Macallan 10 fine oak.
Had Willett bourbon for the first time the other day. One of the smoothest I've ever had. I think anyone could drink it neat. :lick:
Some day when I have something really big to celebrate I'm gonna get a bottle of Johnny blue. :excited:
Anybody ever had Pappy VanWinkle? I hear good things.
-
Bulleit bourbon for the price.
also like 1792
-
I don't trust any booze I can't mix with tomato juice
-
Breckenridge Bourbon is really good for its age. Won top 3 at some international spirits thing in London.
-
I don't drink bourbon but I do like scotch.
< $50 I go with Balvenie Doublewood 12 year
> $50, I like Balvenie Single Barrel 15, Balvenie Portwood 21 yr, Maccallan Cask Strength, Lagavulin 16 yr, Glenlivet 25 yr (duh), Chivas Royal Salute 21 yr, I could go all night LOLS ok i'll stop.
now i'm in the mood for (a) scotch.

Pappy VanWinkle is usually only available during the holiday season. They ship out based on population, so kansas hardly gets any at all. If you want to try one I'd reserve it at a liquor store soon.

My pallet really isn't developed enough to appreciate or distinguish a good single malt.
Johnny Red (or literally any other type of scotch) tastes great to me. Don't know if it's a blessing or a curse.
-
I usually get W.L. Weller or Knob Creek if I'm drinking bourbon, but I almost never touch the stuff.

it wasn't until my senior year at KSU that i developed my taste for good scotch. i remember the exact party- it was a bachelor party (hosted by me) featuring two of Dr. Love's finest.
-
Kentucky Deluxe
-
I love Crown Royal. I started drinking it in college and I have tried much more expensive stuff, but it is what I stock. Knob Creek is also very good. Not a hug scotch drinker, but I do have a couple of bro-in-laws that I will drink it with.

Old charter for this guy
You from Nemaha County? I once heard that Nemaha County drank more Old Charter per capita than in other place in the world.
Oh yeah, I also like Charter, which is why someone from Nemaha County told me that.

Anyone tried Woodford Reserve's Double Oaked?
I think I had that a couple of years ago and liked it. The problem is that I might have one or two when I try something different, and that is just not enough to switch me from my beloved CR.

I cannot drink whiskey. I am a liquor pussy.

You and EMAPE
-
splash of Canadian Hunter with a bunch of Coke :excited:
-
Bourbon all the way for me. Enjoy scotch, but haven't had enough to know much about it.
Cheap: Evan Williams (black label)
Good: Maker's Mark or 1792
-

same AJ, same.
-
All my close friends prefer whiskey to any other liquor. Whenever they get a round of shots, they make order 1 tequila, and x number of whiskey shots. The tequila for me, because whiskey is gross.
-
they would get a shot of vodka with a glass of bloody mary mix chaser if I was their friend stevesie
-
Vodka drinkers are tougher than whiskey drinkers, despite popular opinion to the contrary.
-
I am a whiskey drinker, btw. Can't hang with vodka.
-
As in you think vodka is gross?
Whiskey is only a fall, winter drink for me
-
Vodka has taken a hit in perception due to the watered down fruit infused product being marketed recently.
Nothing more terrifying than a dude taking viaka shots with no chaser
-
we were at a big pak once (MOAP 1?) in manhattan and trim was driving from wichita and asked if someone could pick him up some low/medium level vodka (I'm assuming expecting smirnoff or something) and, I think it was rick daris, got him a handle of viaka.
-
<3 vodka.

It was either MOAP1 or eggpak and I was already there. Pete was driving in and asked what we needed when I put in my order. Expected viaka-ish and was pleased. And, it gave us viakoffman.
-
Also, if this past week's Trim-related posts on goEMAW are an accurate reflection, I'm a raging alcoholic.
-
I was there so it was moap1.
-
George Dickle is pretty damn good even though it doesn't cost much.
I am not a whiskey guy though, as in I don't defer to it.
-
I plan on enjoying some Kentucky Deluxe or Barton's or whatever crap whiskey they have for wells in Aggieville tonight.
-
Love Whiskey and Bourbon its what i always drink.
Have yet to try scotch.
I'm a poor 20 year old college kid so: I get what ever is on sale. Evan Williams is what i have at my place right now. Really like Jim Beam and Jack Daniels.
also I love some of the flavored Whiskey's the Jack D Honey and Red Stag is what i was drinking on NYE and in Dallas for the Cotton bowl.
-
one time, I was slightly inebriated and decided to use franzia as a mixer for kentucky deluxe. It was a winesky. It was not delicious.
-
I feel anything above Johnny Walker Red level is drinkable. Anything below is really :barf:. Anything better is nice, but not necessary.
-

The Gentleman and I used to have some good times together.
I'd like to see a demographic breakdown of vodka guys versus whiskey guys. Based upon my friends, it seems like there should be some differentiation, but I'm not sure what factors would play into it.

Try some Johnny red sometime. Not too expensive. Get it on the rocks with water or soda.

Yeah, a good way to start is to get it on the rocks, and add a lot of water, then incrementally lessen the water.
-
Evan Williams single barrel is really, really good for the money. I'd argue better than JD Single Barrel, which is really good.
Thought I'd get try something new tonight, tried some Russell's Reserve 10 yr. It's pretty good, not as great as the EW or JD though
-
Any Scotch will do. I'm not particular, just love the taste. Of course, if you offer me JW Blue? Different story...nothing better.
Bourbon? Nothing but Jack Black.

Jack is not a GOD DAMN bourbon.

Not an accomplished whiskey-man, but I do enjoy a glass on the rocks from time to time. Jameson is what I've been drinking lately.

Good: Woodford Reserve
Cheap: Maker's Mark
unfortunately it's all expensive over here anyway

Got to tour the woodford reserve last month, first time i have had their whiskey and it is pretty damn good.

Woodford Reserve
-
I enjoy the Canadian Mist of KD with water if i'm trying to get all drunk.
Pendleton is good. Has anyone got one of those gun shaped bottles of tequila from Sams? Looks sweet but very difficult to pour.
-
Knob Creek, Crown Royal Cask No. 16, 1792, Woodford Reserve, Pendleton
Scotch:
Macallan, JW, Chivas
Edit: All on the rocks or with a splash of water.
-
On the Bourbon tip, Woodford Reserve for sure. Four Roses is also quite nice.
-
Daily- Maker's Mark, neat, room temp
- Jameson, 2-3 rocks
Feeling Rich- Woodford Reserve, or Basil Hayden's, just tried it and was really surprised, it's lighter than most, but really complex
-
Love scotch.
Blend: Usually Dewar's, but JW Red is good too
Single Malts: McCallan, Glenlivet, Glenmorangie are the ones I've had the most of and enjoy a lot. Dalmore Gran Reserva is very good. Cardhu is one that many people don't seem to know about but I think is also enjoyable.
Not very particular about bourbons...enjoy Woodford, Four Roses and 1792 a lot though
-
I'm pretty pud I guess. I usually just keep some Jim Beam around (I go through it kinda fast) and also keep some Jaimison around too.

I've done a Scotch distillery tour and it was pretty cool but i don't like Scotch. I like the smooth flavor of Bourbons better.

Definitely Jameson.

This stuff was only available in Iowa until recently. It is now available in KC. Boom!
Templeton Rye
When Prohibition outlawed the manufacture and sale of alcoholic beverages in 1920, many enterprising residents of a small town in Iowa chose to become outlaws – producing a high caliber and much sought-after whiskey known as Templeton Rye.
Based on its extremely smooth finish, the American rye whiskey earned the nickname of “The Good Stuff” and quickly brought a certain degree of fame to the doorsteps of Templeton (pop. 350). As the premium brand of the era, Templeton Rye fetched an impressive $5.50 per gallon – or approximately $70 by today’s standards.
Over the course of its storied history, Templeton Rye became Al Capone’s whiskey of choice, quickly finding its way to the center of his bootlegging empire. Hundreds of kegs per month were supplied to Capone’s gang who in turn filled the demand of speakeasies throughout Chicago, New York and as far west as San Francisco.
Capone was eventually convicted on charges of tax evasion and sent to prison. Later legends suggest that a few bottles even found their way inside the walls of Alcatraz to the cell of prisoner AZ-85.
Although most American whiskeys ceased production after prohibition ended, Templeton Rye continued to be produced illegally in small quantities for loyal patrons. More than eighty-five years later, the infamous small batch rye whiskey finally returned – made available legally for the first time ever in 2006.

Reidrolled's bro loves Leopold bros. I'm actually moving to Denver in a month or so and will be looking forward to connoisseuring the crap out of some booze so I can big time all the puds in the beer thread

Have you guys ever tried coca cola mixed with your whiskey? It's great, you should try. :lick:

Had some Laphroaig 10 yr last night with pops. First Islay I've tried. Woh, peaty
-
Got some jack daniels for christmas!!! It even came with some JD whiskey glasses!
-
My uncle got a bottle of Balvenie 15 yr from someone (work?) as a Christmas gift. He doesn't care for scotch. So me and 2 of my cousins finished the bottle on Christmas Eve.
-
omg guise I'm about to have some JW Blue in a little bit. Uncle brought a half gallon of it for Christmas. Pretty darn excited. Hope it lives up to expectations!
-
Anyone had the Leopold Brothers apple or blackberry whiskey?
Apple is v good, peach not so much. Blackberry is straight nasty, too syrupy. Their Silver Tree vodka is fantastic, probably the smoothest I've had. Their gin is okay.

It was fantastic. Had what I can only really describe as a "nice burn," where its certainly present but it's not long lasting or overwhelming whatsoever. Maybe the best part about it is that even while the burn is short, the flavors last on your palate for a lingering finish. Extremely easy to drink, yet complex and satisfying.
Obviously it's a "special occasion" whiskey but it undoubtedly delivers what you would expect from a scotch of that caliber and price tag.

Yeah, I didn't care for the gin. Apple is definitely the most popular. Their absinthe.... :fatty:

I like scotch
Oban to be specific
american and canadian give me heartburn and also make me howl at the moon until I get arrested

I love Phillips Union.

Anyone had the new Crown Maple? Thoughts? I thought it was pretty decent when I tried it with water.

tasted like I was eating pancakes, I didn't like it 'cause imo whiskey shouldn't taste like pancakes.
-
I'm a Canadian whiskey drinker. One day I was buying a bottle of Crown and some old man told me that next time I should buy Forty Creek. He said it tasted just as good but was cheaper. So, the next time I went I picked up a gallon of Forty Creek. Well... it wasn't bad but it was not in the same league as Crown. More like Seagrams. And... it wasn't that much cheaper.

It was much better than the 357 Canadian maple rye, however.

Is it weird that I absolutely like Seagram's better than I like Crown? I think the only liquor more overrated than Crown is Patron, but that belongs in the tequila thread.

Lots of different ways? Favorite is with ice and just a splash of Coke, but also enjoy shots, on the rocks, whiskey and coke, whiskey and 7up, whiskey and ginger ale. Really whatever, as long as it has whiskey.
Not a huge fan of sipping it neat if it is warm.

hmm.. ok.
I don't notice much difference between Crown and Seagrams when mixed with 7up or coke but when drinking it in a shot or on the rocks Crown just seems much smoother to me.

I bought some Woodford reserve a few weeks ago and broke it out last night. It has the bite that I like in a bourbon but the flavor was not great. 1792 has a better flavor imo and the towny liquor store stocks it so there's that. Some poster (I think Cire?) said they liked Woodford reserve and I was just wondering what exactly they liked about it.

Dang, that is my favorite, had some last night. Although I don't know that changing from 45% to 42% will change it that much. That is like the difference between the ice at the beginning of the drink slowly becoming liquid water at the end of the drink.

For me it's mainly the principal. Plus, starting at 45% to get to 42% due to ice melting is one thing... but the distillery knocking 6.7% off the alcohol content of great product to meet "global demand" is bullshit at it's highest order.
I will probably go snag 2-3 bottles to keep around and then move on to Knob Creek, Woodford Reserve, or perhaps another quality bourbon simply out of principle. Whatever happened to good old fashioned supply side economics?? Wouldn't it seem smarter to just raise the price a bit to lower demand until they could up production?
:shakesfist:

How do you drink it? On the rocks? With water?
Room temp in a glass, I wanted to get the full effect. Will probs add some ice to it the next time.

Since most emaws are :kstategrad: , I'm going to assume that most of you enjoy Maker's Mark from time to time...
The following will come as very disturbing news, and I suggest heading out to stock up before the watered down crap hits the shelves.
http://www.slate.com/blogs/moneybox/2013/02/11/maker_s_mark_watering_its_bourbon_down.html
FYI, Noticed Maker's Mark is on sale for 20 bucks at Walgreen's this week. Stock up.

have it on good authority from a bro in the liquor biz that a little water helps unlock the flavor of a good whiskey. I like whiskey on the rocks myself.

fwiw, almost all whiskey is watered down after distallation otherwise it would be pushing closer to 120 proof aka cask strength

 On the rocks is best, but whiskey with a bit of water isn't bad at all. Can take either and be happy.
-
yeah, can't do "neat" myself. I do have a friend that drinks scotch neat and pretty much nothing else.

I like my whiskey with a splash of cottage cheese

I recognize that it's overpriced, but it was still tasty scotch.

Just had a glass of Woodford with a couple ice cubes. crap's legit. Muchas gracias, amigos!

I used to really like bulleit for the price but it's gone up. for sipping I would buy anything for under 25$ for a fifth. My go to mixing whiskey is Canadian Club.

Just bought a bottle of Glenfiddich limited edition Cask of Dreams. Only 3500 bottles made worldwide and only 20 distributed to the state of Kansas. A fine addition to my collection! I can't decide if I want to open it or not.
Also, Johnnie Walker blue is a good scotch but way overpriced. Their 18 year old Gold is better.

Why would you not open it? Does it continue to improve in taste or grow in value in an unopened bottle?
-
open that bottle up and i open you up, son. thats something you drink when barry o stops by your house. save it.

Why would you not open it? Does it continue to improve in taste or grow in value in an unopened bottle?
It won't improve in taste. The maturity of Scotch stops when it is transferred from the barrel to the bottle. It will improve in value some but it's only a $110 bottle and I didn't buy it for that reason. The ones that really go up in value are much rarer and made up of older scotch.
-
so why wouldn't you open it?
-
open that bottle up and i open you up, son. thats something you drink when barry o stops by your house. save it.
i take this back. drink it, get a nicer bottle for when barry stops in.
-
I totally get buying a drink that you don't know if you'll drink it ever. Totally get you bro. The pleasure is like in the having of it. I possess you whisky, you are mine.
-
open that bottle up and i open you up, son. thats something you drink when barry o stops by your house. save it.
I have better bottles than this. A lot of the rarer scotches you can't find in Kansas so I have them shipped from K&L Wines (klwines.com) in California. I live in Olathe and you cannot have liquor shipped to Kansas, so I have them shipped to a friend's house in Lee's Summit, MO.

I've been working on a bottle of Four Roses Small Batch that Demo158 gave me for my birthday. Is delish. Thanks, Demo.

One of my clients is Chivas. I'm hoping they fly me out there to meet them and I take back crates of the 18 year.
-
so why wouldn't you open it?
I think it's just the collector in me. If I open it and drink it then I won't have it anymore. I will drink it eventually but it's rare enough that I'll save it for a special occasion i.e, job promotion, repeat of Triple Crown next year.
-

I've been murdering some Birddog blackberry whiskey lately. What a tasty drink.

herp derp crown royal is the best whiskey ever
so annoying. i do like the quilts that people make out of the bags, though.

When i was in college i was really into Irish history, especially the war of independance, so i've always had/enjoyed a bottle of Michael Colins whiskey, though i don't know if you can still get it anywhere

No it's not but due to the increased demand for single malt scotch by the business class in emerging markets the distilleries of Scotland are running low on supplies which is driving up the price and making rare bottlings increasingly difficult to find. It's hard to predict demand and takes many years to catch up to it.

I mean, the only whiskey you should drink is bourbon, anyway.
-
would someone with a HWIQ like to explain to me the differences in taste of a bourbon whiskey and a rye whiskey? saw a bottle of templeton rye at the local store and might try it. tia
In a nutshell, bourbon is a sweeter whiskey, with a lower percentage of rye. Whiskey's that are 51% rye content or more (bulliet rye is like 95% I think) are considered Rye Whiskey, and have a much spicier taste that is more difficult to drink neat or on rocks.

Alright clams, I understand that you consider yourself a foodie or chef or whatever you like to refer yourself as, and I'm sure you make a mean Egg McMuffin but this is a thread about Whiskey/Whisky. You don't know more than me, you don't even understand the concept of supply and demand. Stick to talking about fast food and morel mushrooms. I tried to be nice and ignore your comment about how every scotch drinker should try Johnnie Walker Blue "which is utterly the stupidest thing I've read since I stopped posting at GPC" because anyone with a half a decent palate knows that there's a dozen or more $50.00 bottles of scotch that are twice the caliber that JWB is. And no need to thank me for "saving up" I'm the old guy bartender remember? (right OKCat) I don't live paycheck to paycheck.
The sad thing is I would happily bring a bottle or two of fine scotch to share with goEMAW at a game this year but I'm a little tired of the constant insults. It's like you can't be old (37) and have a thought of your own here. Ironic since that's the reason I left gpc. Maybe you should consider that gpc or kstatesports.com isn't the only one alienating fans who don't buy into the rough ridin' bullshit that Currie is selling.
Or I could be just way off base and you could ban me. Which I hope isn't the case.

no one's getting banned, chillax broskie.

Which I hope isn't the case.
i didn't read your post but i'm confident in my response to it all, you're a rough ridin' idiot.

so why wouldn't you open it?
I think it's just the collector in me. If I open it and drink it then I won't have it anymore. I will drink it eventually but it's rare enough that I'll save it for a special occasion i.e, job promotion, repeat of Triple Crown next year.
the world isn't going to run out of super premium scotch.
No it's not but due to the increased demand for single malt scotch by the business class in emerging markets the distilleries of Scotland are running low on supplies which is driving up the price and making rare bottlings increasingly difficult to find. It's hard to predict demand and takes many years to catch up to it.
good rough ridin' grief. :flush:
Sorry you don't know anything about this.
the one thing I know about you is that I know more about "this" than you do.
congrats on saving up for that 750ml tho, and way to flip the bird to those Saudi princes, gulp gulp

why did you put your own post within quotation marks?
regardless, i think it is important for everyone who drinks scotch to try johnnie blue at some point. why? because, as evidenced in this thread (http://goEMAW.com/forum/index.php?topic=21149.msg675034#msg675034), johnnie blue is very often and incorrectly thought of as the high water mark as far as scotch goes. unless you've tried it, it would be out of place disagreeing with the sentiment.
my first post in this thread (http://goEMAW.com/forum/index.php?topic=21149.msg534623#msg534623) had no mention of blue.

while i personally think this comment is really rough ridin' stupid, there are people out there that love to drink Scoresby by the half gallon, maybe you're one of them.

I'm looking for a whiskey with a rich/delicate nutty earthy meaty flavor. Any tips?

My favorite part is when lopakman brought up how tall and possibly fat he is, including bbs member references. The insecurity is palpable. Can pics be far behind? Stay tuned. :excited:
I am a large man with his own thoughts that are his own and nobody else's!! I used to post at gpc and I bring it up alot, there are still some feelings there!! Do not disagree with me or it hurts my feelings and I play the victim, but also lash out and make it weird!! I'm not cut out for bbs'n, but I can't accept it!! Round peg, square hole, smash, smash, suhmash!!

Tough question. Both are very good but I prefer the sherry. The 18 year old sherry is the best Macallan I've ever had and the 12 year sherry oak is typically my go to because it's reasonably priced at $55.00. For the fine oak collection I like the 15 yr fine better than the 17 yr. It's not always about the age.

I'll generally allow a single ice cube to accompany 2 fingers of uisce. A little bit of water helps bring out the flavor.

I like to have a glass of water on the side, I just can't bring myself to add water to a single malt.

Anyone tried Wild Turkey Forgiven?
Wild Turkey and Rare Breed are two of my staples. Love them.
But the name and story of Forgiven have really put me off. Mainly because I don't know how accurate these bourbons like Devil's Cut are true to the seemingly bullshit story about them. Especially a bourbon claiming that it was a messed up batch but it actually turned out great! So now we have tons of bottles of it to sell!

You realize that single malt scotch is barreled at a higher strength than what comes in the bottle, and they pour water into the mixture before bottling and capping and selling to you for big $$$ so you can talk about how much better it is "straight" than with any additional water.
But to each his own, as long as you're drinking whiskey, you're doing it right.

Cask Strength scotch is fun. Glenmorange has one (astar?) that's delicious and 123 proof to boot.
I also enjoy BH, but when I found out it was made by Jim Beam it kind of spoiled it for me.

Makes sense. They're getting ready to stop making their standard 10, 12 and 15 year old offerings as well. They're going to be replaced with their new 1824 collection, or colour based whiskys reflecting the whisky's color instead of age. Gold, Amber, Sienna and Ruby are the four bottlings. I haven't seen them out anywhere yet though.

Get and orange slice, sugar cube, and dash of bitters. Muddle it all together, making sure not to muddle the rind of the orange. After that, put a shot of ri in, and gradually stir in ice. This will take a couple of minutes for the ice to melt a sufficient amount, but keep adding it as you can. After you think it's done, strain it into a different glass. I like to serve them neat but others (wimps) like them on the rocks.

Actually, I think the bartender was full of crap. He just didn't have anything older than the 15 year and he wanted to make me feel good about it.

How was it? I think the 15 year is 110 proof. Also, how much did a glass of that cost at the bar?
-
I heard 15 was better from someone else to. Haven't tried either though.

We were at Vincenzo's restaurant. It was $35. The night before, when I had the Elijah Craig, it was $37 at a restaurant where we also did a tasting with three other whiskeys.

i was at mastro's in beverly hills on friday night. pretty loud bar so i didn't call the brand of scotch b/c there's a bunch of different balvenies. instead, i ordered a "carribean cask" which is a specific varietal of scotch. i get the bill and the bartender charged me for a 15 year single barrel. big price diff.
i moved my check to my table and told the waiter and the waiter just said eff that guy, don't worry about that bill.

Clams, have you tried the Balvenie 12 year Single Barrel First Fill? I almost bought a bottle but it's $70.00 which seems high considering you can get the 12 year doublewood for $50, the 14 year Caribean Cask for $65 and the 15 year for $80.00. I settled on the 15 year.
-
Bought a bottle of the 12 yr doublewood (aged in sherry casks) last night. I enjoyed it.

no haven't heard of it. will research. the 15 year single barrel is great choice. i have a friend getting me a bottle of 21 macallan oak at cost for my collection. it's pretty good crap.

Had you been there before? Has service or food quality suffered with the Landry's aquisition? Assuming you were up on the third floor in the penthouse?
Seafood tower there is one of the more impressive things I have ever ordered

I would be interested in hearing what you think about it. I considered buying a bottle last year for a special occasion but ended up going with the Balvenie 21 yr Portwood. Which was excellent by the way.

Whiskey/Whisky tastings are the best. I wish they had more of those here in Kansas City. Two years ago at Lukas Liquor, Balvenie put on a tasting for $35.00 which included the 12 yr doublewood, 15 year single barrel, 17 year Maderia Cask, 17 year Peated Cask and the 21 year Portwood. At the end of the tasting you could take the $35.00 you paid and apply it towards any bottle of Balvenie. It was great.

ya no different. similar to McCormick & Schmick's bought by Landry's, no discernible difference in quality. the mastro's acquisition is still a fairly recent deal too.
no, didn't go in the penthouse although they offered. we ate on the 2nd floor main dining room. we did get the seafood tower, boa does something similar with the liquid nitrogen. also got a stone crab appetizer which was about the size of my hand.
if you're into seafood towers like i am, try the grand plateau at capital grille. it's pretty hilariously huge.

i've had it, it's great. not as sweet as the sherry aged but the rough ridin' crap is nice. i really don't have any plans to drink it, more just to put on my bar and look at it.

Yeah I figured and hoped it would take a little while to change Mastro's. I would disagree about McCormicks, has gone way downhill since the purchase by Landry's (at least on the plaza).
-
the one on the plaza went downhill a long time ago IMO
-
Picked up a bottle of Springbank 10 yr today, not my first one. Probably the best 10 yr scotch I've ever had. It's kind of expensive for a 10 year at $70.00 a bottle but imo it's a lot better than a some of the current 15-16 yr single malts out there. Clams, have you tried it?
-
no, i know nothing about it, i'll look for it today at lukas

That sounds like the best $35 anyone has ever spent in the history of ever, how did you find about it?

They don't carry it at Lukas. Only two places in KC I've been able to find it is Gomer's off of Holmes and MDL Wines off of 95th and Antioch (which is where I got it, only one bottle left) and even those places only carry the 10 year. I've had the 15 and 18 year shipped in from a place California.
-
is that peated cask any good? i'm assuming it's a lagavulin clone?
-
is that peated cask any good? i'm assuming it's a lagavulin clone?
It was my least favorite of the bunch and imo no where near worth the $115.00 price tag it carries. It's definitely not as smoky as Lagavulin, but then again not much is. If you're into peaty scotch I'd recommend sticking to the Islay distilleries.
-
i'm not. just want to have it for people who are. i'm going to put a bottle of lagavulin on the bar as soon as it shows back up at the distributor

I follow Lukas Liquor on twitter, they sent out a series of tweets advertising it. If you live in the Kansas City area @LukasLiquorKC is a great follow, they're constantly announcing new arrivals, beer/wine/and spirits.

haha, I did that to. I had one friend who over the course of a year drank nearly the entire bottle. It was just the standard 16 year. No one else liked it, including me. Either you love it or you hate it I guess.
-
i really don't mind it. it's not bad, to me. i just prefer others. if you're ever drunk enough that you'll lay down $50 for a shot of the 21 oak macallan, cap grille has it behind the bar. or if i'm ever drunk enough when we're PAK'n, i'll give you a shot off mine.
-
i got 1 of those papers from the jameson distillery that says i am a whiskey expert. feel free to direct all questions to me.

You're a good man clams. I could see both of these situations happening, possibly in the same night.

Just bought a bottle of Jefferson's Presidential Select 21 yr old bourbon. The distillery only produced six barrels for a total of 1800 bottles. I can't decide if I should open it up and drink it or just stare at it. Clams?

I love this thread. I've just never spent over $40.00 on a bottle. I really like Ridgemont Reserve 1792. I hope to someday do my Alma Mater better justice.
But, uh, K-State in the house.

So you have gotten the "Deluxe" KD bottle, is that the most expensive one?

May have already been mentioned in this thread, but I picked up a bottle of the Darkhorse Rye(distilled in Lenexa!) as a Xmas gift to myself. Finally opened it up last night and found it pretty tasty and smoother than I expected

I tried out 12 year Auchentoshan. It was definitely the sweetest scotch I've ever had.
-
The Weller 12 year is as good as they say it is and a value to boot. I am going between that and Breck Bourbon.
Someone gave me Johnnie Walker Black and it tastes like soap. Awful. Would be interested to try the not cheap stuff
-
I've heard Black is worse than Red. Also, just saw Johnnie Walker Platinum. I can only assume it's similar to Bud Light Platinum?

I'll be at level 7 by kickoff tonight. I've been saving this for a special occasion.

fledgling whiskey enthusiast here with a question: do you guys just truck through a bottle before moving on to the next one, or do you open multiple bottles to sip whatever tickles your fancy? If the latter, do you take any steps to preserve the open bottle?

I usually have anywhere between 10-15 open bottles at any given time and a few more unopened bottles. These are all currently open bottles that I'm working on.

Why haven't you poured out that Johnnie Walker Blue yet :Yuck:
I got that as a gift for Christmas this year. I made the mistake of buying a bottle of 750 ml JWB a few years ago. I'm not a real big fan of any of the Johnnie Walker's(they're not terrible, just not great.) I have a friend that wants to try it so saving it for when he comes over.

So you know what's the best? Having a roomate who dates a liquor rep.....Every time she would stay at the house she would bring in some random box full of liquor and just forget about it. Roommate moved in with the GF over the summer but they left 4 boxes of liquor in my garage and basement. After 1 month everything left became fair game.
Most of the stuff was shitty liquers and random terrible stuff I gave away but I've been drinking free Woodford Reserve/Knob Creek/Breck distillery/Jack Daniels single barrel for the past 6 months.
Only have half a bottle of JD single barrel left

Currently drinking 20 year Pappy Van Winkle with my bro from Seattle. Totally worth $200.
I had 15 year Pappy in Louisville a couple of weeks ago- the night after Elijah Craig. The bartender told me that 15 year was better than 20 year, so IN YOUR FACE!
Actually, I think the bartender was full of crap. He just didn't have anything older than the 15 year and he wanted to make me feel good about it.
How was it? I think the 15 year is 110 proof. Also, how much did a glass of that cost at the bar?
We were at Vincenzo's restaurant. It was $35. The night before, when I had the Elijah Craig, it was $37 at a restaurant where we also did a tasting with three other whiskeys.
My buddy with the liquor rep fiance just gave me a bottle of Elijah Craig 12 as a groomsman present. Excited :billdance:

What do you think about the Dark Horse bourbon? I want to love it so much, as it's distilled a block from my house, but it was just a fine bourbon for me.

They sold it in the Shannon airport in Ireland on our way back from Afghan, my Company Commander bought some and we all had a swig on St. Patty's, another guy had some Redbreast and they were very similar. Smooth Whiskey that should be drank neat. A little sweet without the bite of Scotch. Now that I'm talking about it I'm going to have to see about getting some more of this stuff.

its along one side of the house. It came with the house. I made a special effort to not spray poison on it when I weed n feeded this weekend.
I will not try to get rid of it except by harvesting it for subsistence.

Whoa, I just picked up a bottle of this after work on Friday. I normally like a hint of smokeyness in my Scotch but this might be too much. It was like making out with a campfire or something. Maybe I'll get used to it after a couple more glasses.

Good. It's 90 proof and I believe has some rye which gives it a little bite. I drink it on the rocks often

I'm admittedly partial, but I really enjoy 1835 as an anytime whiskey. Very tasty and very affordable. My special occasion whiskey is garrison brothers and that stuff is just delightful.
I've seen a lot of recipes for an old fashioned, but my pref is 1835, simple syrup, dash of bitters, splash of water. Ice is acceptable.
The only thing I will mix with garrison brothers is the glass I poured it into. To mix or dilute with anything else is accurately described under article 4 of the Geneva convention as a crime against humanity.

My dad gave me a bottle of Single Barrel E.H. Taylor, Jr. bourbon. It comes from the buffalo trace family and is very very good.

Also, Bastille is a French-made bourbon (don't ask) that is carried at Bourbon and Baker. It's a very tasty and smooth bourbon for those that enjoy your whiskey neat and prefer it to be smoother.

Fee Brothers?
Yup - Orange is the best so far. Rhubarb surprised me as a close second. Celery is probably better used in a bloody
-
I like adding the grapefruit ones to IPAs. The rhubarb is my favorite with whiskey. The chocolate is really good in white Russians.
-
Peach bitters in a whiskey soda is pretty grand.
-
Really want to get into bitters/cocktails

a buddy left me a bottle of Eagle Rare 10 yr on NYE. should i be excited? the smell makes me want to heave a little as do most bourbons.
it's a good value single barrel but a little light in character. Not the worst thing by a long shot and something someone who doesn't drink whiskey ought to be able to handle on the rocks (only way I do it except for things like Jameson 18 year which I do neat). ER is not a far cry from Basil Haydens.
I pretty much only drink whiskey these days. American, Irish and Canadian. Not a big fan of any whisky I've tried to date. A very good value whiskey I recently tried was Old Grandfather 114 ($22). Spicy with a good alcohol flavor on the tongue. ... however not much burn going down.
Redbreast Irish is good but not cheap. Blantons is a good American but also kinda pricey. Lots of good options in the $20-35 range. Usually can get better for more money but like most things, there are diminishing returns imo.

Tried them yet? I tried a cheap set once and they made the whiskey taste different.

No change in taste. They don't make the whiskey quite as cold as ice, but they are very nice.

that reminds me i havent used the granite ones i got for christmas, will report when used

just read the reviews and description, looks like it should be pretty good

The stone ones are pretty "meh". They'll cool a drink a little, but not really worth the hassle from my experience.
-
So, I've always understood that the water from the melting ice is important in a glass of whiskey... that the water helps bring out the flavor of the whiskey (lest you only taste the ethanol product) As such I never understood whiskey stones, you're dulling the flavors with out cold without releasing them with water, right?
Also, why the stones at all? I guess its pretty dorm room-y but you could just keep your whiskey chilled if that's what you're after and use stemware if you're worried about your hand heating it up.
What i'm saying is I just don't get it, man.
-
Good points.
I like it with the rocks though. I also splash a little water in even with them and now I can sip it and never worry about getting really watered down. It's nice.

You can always add the exact quantity of water you would like (say, 1 tbsp) and then add the stones. In that sense, the stones allow for more precise control of your water:whisky. They also lend themselves to a more consistent drinking temperature throughout your imbibement as they do not exchange energy with the solution as rapidly as ice does.

I have these and they work great.

Unless a whiskey is bottled at cask strength (would be mentioned on the label), then water has already been added pre-bottling. So you don't really need to add more water to bring out the flavor. Doing so just further dilutes the whiskey, which is fine if this is your preference but not necessary.

Just because whiskey is diluted to 80 proof down from cask strength doesn't mean that is the optimal water:ethanol level to appreciate the finer notes of a good whiskey. You're right that its essentially preference but there's nothing magical about 80 proof as it relates to enjoyment.
The reason why all booze in the US is sold at 80 proof (for the most part) is because that is the lowest alcohol to water ratio that, when mixed with gunpowder that the chowder would still light. This was how, back in the day, that you could be certain that what you were being sold was what it purported to be and wasn't some kind of adulterated water.
Similarly cask strength shouldn't be considered inherently better for its stiff constitution. Its not the way it "ought to be" its simply stronger because the distillers want the solvent effects of the alcohol to be present in higher quantities to speed up the barrel aging process.

Cool. We've been trying to get the word out as organically as possible, letting the product speak for itself.

what happens after 3 weeks?

You don't want to know.
Seriously, it's just not meant to remain in the whiskey for a long time. We'd like to think the sticks improve the whiskey, which would make it more desirable to drink.

Do you have any recommendations for whiskey to use these with? This seems like something I would like to try.

My guess is you use it with crap whiskey or home stilled - why would you spend even more money to affect a high-priced, high-quality whiskey?
Like, a terrific use-case would be those souls that take a sailboat across an entire ocean or something and have no other means to procure alcohol.

Fair point - but I think this is just bit wonky. Like, you'd apply it to a cheap whiskey, but at $6/$7 per stick you make a $20 bottle $26, and then you're defeating the value/quality claim a bit. Also, can I just head to my firewood stand, pick out an oak log, char it, chop it up, and achieve the same results?
Oh, and this:

As for Gizmodo, yep, that happened. They were sent a set of sticks never intended for use - in short, it was a screw-up. Not an excuse, an explanation. We offered to send sticks that, you know, WORK, and they never responded. So you have to own it.
If you're interested in adding a little something to your whiskey, in essence making it your own, then this is for you. We're not re-inventing the wheel or claiming we make crappy whiskey top-shelf.
Hope that helps.

I like some local, small-batch stuff, but according to one of the founders, it works well in Crown Royal, Bulleit, Jack Daniel’s and Glenlivet. The gift set was a tie-in with the stones - we'll have "gentleman's" kits soon featuring a flask.

They were cut larger than usual size so the "capillaries" are easier to see in photographs. They were designed for art, not for use.

But we stand by the product. If you're curious, try it out. If not, that's fine as well.
That's cool. I won't, because I can't justify $15 for what looks like a fun chemistry (physics??) experiment. However, I look forward to the reviews from the folks here.
And ChiCat, that's just me. I'm an bad person. Ask @sunny_cat

I will.
I'm new to the whiskey thing. I had whiskey and coke in the past, but I don't count that. In the last couple months I've gotten into whiskey on the rocks with Buffalo Trace, Knob Creek, Makers, and Bird Dog. (So far) I plan to try others.
I like it and I think JMart's thing might be cool to try. Plus JMart is a good dude and I'm willing to give it a shot based on that.

Also, make one that changes water to miller lite. Maybe some sort of miller lite chowder drink thing? Like those ladies at my office add to their water because they can't drink non-sweet fluids?

Someone game me a bottle of eagle rare bourbon. Any good?
it's a good value single barrel but a little light in character.

Haha, I guess. But more educate people. It's what this thread is for, right? A person that drinks whiskey (or whisky) should know the difference.

If you're a fan of Crown Royal, try the Kirkland Canadian 6 yr from Costco. $20 for a 1.75. I think crown makes it with a slightly different blend.

all kirkland's alcohol is v. good. Comparable to anything in the 25-30$ category. The tequilla is very good too

I believe it should taste the same as the day they bottled it. That's one reason why people drink old whiskeys because it's like time traveling to the past (with your taste buds tho). If it was still aging in the barrel (like what the sticks are supposed to do) well that's a different story. bro

guys friday i took a tour of a local distillery and learned some things about some stuff:
1. The term "small batch" means absolutely nothing.
2. a surprisingly large number of companies use bulk whiskey instead of distilling their own. I would have thought this was more outrageous but apparently it's pretty much industry standard.
3. The difference between making vodka and making whiskey is like 1 step in the distilling process and then of course vodka goes straight to the bottle instead of being aged in oak barrels. I was like, whoa. I had no idea vodka and whiskey were like, brothers pretty much.

The new Rieger whiskey does #2...then brings it to KC and mixes in the sherry to mimic the old time tradition of KC whiskey.

I learned #2 recently as well. Specifically, I read an article that was about rye whiskey. Apparently, Bulleit Rye and Templeton Rye are the exact same grain makeup, Bulleit is just aged a little bit longer.*
#3 isn't shocking. For instance, "20% bourbon mixed with 80% neutral grain spirits" is written on the neck of Kentucky Deluxe bottles.
*edited to correct after examing Clams's tree chart.

Tincup. Not branded as bourbon on the bottle, but "American Whiskey." Very easy drinking as the lower proof might suggest. It's bottled in and marketed as a Colorado whiskey, but it's really some domestic import to our neighbors to the west. Good drink tho. Perfect for someone looking to get into drinking neat.
Very cool bottle. Owned/ bottled by Stranahan's,which I've heard makes a great bourbon.

Yes, but this is some kind of front product. They bring in the 'sky, mix it with a little Colorado water, snap a cool looking bottle over it and put it in the stores. This isn't Stranahan's, but Stranahan's is the one who puts it out there. It's almost too easy drinking for me, and I'm not some stud whiskey guy.

Fantastic.
I prefer my Manhattans with rye, up, 2 to 1 whiskey/vermouth. Controversial opinion but I'm not a big Maker's Mark fan. The only wheated bourbons I've ever cared for are those of the Weller/Van Winkle line.
-
I did 1.5 oz maker's with 1 oz vermouth and a few splashes of bitters. I like rye as well, but this cask strength was on a major sale that I couldn't pass up.

In an attempt to lose some weight I’m gonna get deep into the bourbon this winter instead of my usual barrel aged beers. Would love any recommendations, preferably the $30-60 range
-
Go to your favorite liquor store with the largest bourbon selection. Start on one end of the bourbon aisle. Buy the first three or four bottles in your range. Repeat as necessary to keep the cupboard filled. Don't sleep on the bottom shelf. There's some quality down there too. Kentucky Gentleman didn't make this list but it's one of my favorites.

It’s acquired for sure.
Old fashioned are easy to make it home and cut a lot of the bite off.

It's a bit acquired but I am opposite at this point. I don't hate beer, it's just a lot of drinking. I'd rather just have a finger or two and get a nice buzz on (when I am in drinking mode) then try and drink 2-3 beers to get the same effect. I end up mostly feeling bloated and have to piss a lot.

Those are very different bourbons. I'm not a big fan of Maker's because it is a wheated bourbon. They tend to be sweeter and lack complexity in my experience.
-
Although I abstain these days, I did enjoy trying all the different distillers available here in KY. My favorites were always single barrels. Top two were both 125 proof: 1792 and Woodford. Daily sipper from the bottom shelf was Very Old Barton 80 or 100 on a rock or two.
Days gone by. I've moved to trying the different flavored sparkling waters out there. S. Pellegrino is in the lead.

I've come a long way from McCormick's and Old Crow lol

both were enjoyable as I prepared for the winter death storm

my first scotch (after committing to becoming an enthusiast) was Highland Park 12. I think it is a good entry level whisky.

You just kind of have to find your lane after that

Noob question: is that flavor that tastes like the soil of Scotland in Johnny Walker black but isn’t present in bourbon “peaty-ness”?
-
Have you guys watched this doc? It's on HULU and it's really good. I rarely drink bourbon or whiskey but it's really interesting and the visuals are awesome.

When people describe a Scotch as peaty they are talking about the smoky flavor. Peat is used as fuel to dry the malted barley in the mash. Islay Scotches tend to be especially peaty and briny.

I cannot fathom enjoying whiskey "tasting."
I don't drink whiskey anymore, but when I did I'd wager that I drank more of it than most of this blog put together. It all tastes like crap. All of it. If it didn't eff me up, I would have never drank it. All whiskey also tasted better with Diet Coke mixed with it, except Scotch. That tasted like crap in Diet Coke too.
Now that I don't drink anymore, if someone came up to me and handed me a whiskey that allegedly tasted like the finest whiskey in the world, but it contained zero intoxicants, there is zero chance in the world that I would drink it. LOL.

It had me by the balls and taint and ball sack. I have zero problems with others drinking alcohol, and I always thought wine and craft beer tasted great. Spirits however, no one would drink that if it didn't kick our asses. People who can drink responsibly should enjoy the eff out of it tho. I just lost that power at some point...there was no such thing as a "couple of drink." If I had 2, I was going to want to have half a dozen or 10 or whatever. I mean, most of the time I could force myself to have 2 if I had to, but it was not very pleasant at all. It was a progressive thing...I "drank" for 20 years and never lost a job etc., but it was always headed in the wrong direction...sometimes slowly progressing, sometimes more quickly, but by the end it was picking up steam. Just something to watch out for. You'll know if it's getting worse than it was 3 years ago, that's a good thing to watch out for. If it isn't, and you don't find yourself drinking more than you should, live it up man! I sure as hell would.

No worries. Lot of people on this blog knew already from Fatty Fest and stuff. I'm not shy about it or whatever. Still, point is that whiskey is poop tasting, and I cannot believe that rough ridin' clams talks all this crap on beer and then is like "ooohhh whiskey tastes good." Whatever clams.

I can handle harsher, more full-bodied spirits, on the occasion I imbibe because they force a slow pace (strong bourbons, gins).
I’m right there with Pete for the smooth stuff, like crown, especially if I’ve got a full bottle to drink. It almost always ends up with me drinking way too much, semi-blacking out having enormous regret and embarrassment the next day.
This is almost never the case with any other substance or form of booze.

I should clarify, I drank that way with everything, not just whiskey and Diet Coke.

Yep. 90% of my spirits are consumed neat, which is why crown is just a no go for me.

I dabble in a little bit of everything. I've thought about which I would miss most if I ever gave up hooch. Beer and wine are obvious but there are some decent NA alternatives. Whiskey is the only spirit that I would legitimately miss the taste of.

I was similar and drank all types, but missed wine and beer more than whiskey, despite being a huge whiskey drinker. Before I quite, I too thought "I'll probably drink NA beer." However, I haven't and don't drink any of the NA stuff. Part of whole process of being a non-drinker (a lot goes into that, and I am very, very happy to talk in detail about it if anyone ever wants to know more) involves (for me) not being in the situations where I'd even want to, AND my tastes have changed a bit as well. There is a particular flavor of "non-drinking" that I follow, which is a very common one.

I think Irish whiskey is very good. I think I may be done with bourbon for a while. Just getting into it. I’ve enjoyed Tullamore DEW and Busker. Looking for Green Spot after reading good reviews about it. Any other recommendations?

I like both from time to time. Bourbon can certainly get sweet over time.

The other day I was in the Irish whiskey section and picked up a bottle of something called "The Knot". Looked like it was an irish whiskey but it is actually some sort of extremely sweet / vanilla-ish / creamy-ish liqueor inspired by Irish whiskey and not actually Irish whiskey. Very strange stuff. I think it may have a use for making hot toddies this winter. xpost to "shame yourself" thread.

They finally had some in stock and I got a bottle. $60 rough ridin' dollars. It’s pretty meh tbh and there was so much wax on mine I basically needed a grinder to get it open. If they were trying to be like Makers they have a lot of work to do. Would not buy again.

Back from my fun trip to Scotland, now gotta say my favorite Scotch is Caol Ila 12 year, it's like Lagavulin Lite, but in the best way. Great smoky flavor (which I like) while being light and slightly sweet. Amazing combo.

Fun!
If you have the time, grab a meal at The Stave. You won't be disappointed. Bonus, their bourbon selection is phenomenal.

Their menu looks great. Try to get that as a lunch stop tomorrow.

That's baller Tom. Have a great time. I definitely need to do that someday

First road game at Cincinnati needs to include a goEMAW encounter at one of these distilleries.

I did this with pals a few years ago. I don't even like whisky/bourbon much and I enjoyed it. Get a good guide to drive you around. It was a good time.

Mint Julep Tours does a nice job for those interested.

Great update Tom. Remus is a pretty amazing character of prohibition that isn't talked about much
-
Back home. Unpack and head for Manhattan tomorrow.
I think I will turn the mini bat into a muddler.

Would enjoy a review of the old tub

Hell yeah Tom!

Would enjoy a review of the old tub
Our tasting included Jim Beam white label, knob creek 9 year, old tub, and lineage (15+ years, 110 proof).
When they surveyed our group the Old Tub was preferred over the others by a large margin. I do not have the refined pallet to give you a real review, but the wife preferred it with its mild spicey finish. I picked up a lot of corn, vanilla in the flavor profile.
