I know absolutely nothing about European soccer teams and normally only follow the WC.

I do however enjoy rooting for Germany and Sweden since that is where my ancestors lived, how are they looking this year?

Also is Slavdon Ibrahimovic* still on Swedens team? He was absolutely ridiculous in FIFA World Cup 2010!!!

germany should be the favorite, imo. they are just absolutely stacked with ozil, hummels, gotze, lahm, neuer, schweinsteiger, etc.

sweden has some good pieces with zlatan, rasmus elm, and seb larsson, but not too strong overall

USA! USA! USA! USA!

I'd put USA's chances of winning at about 60%. I mean we've been sandbagging recently but I think we will turn it on in time to win this tournament. I'm only worried about our draw, we got a dousy!

Whats the bracket look like? Do I have to choose a winner in the title game between Sweden and Germany or can I just mark it down as a tie?

This is international play. It's like the World Cup. Only it's just sixteen European teams instead of 32 teams from around the world.

Title: Re: EUROS 2012
Post by: sunny_cat on May 19, 2012, 11:43:38 PM
They know the US would win it every time so they didn't let us enter. And Ireland and England and everything are all their own teams. They both qualified. Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Wales all didn't.

Ireland and northern ireland have separate teams? That's rough ridin' racist too. Their Protestants and Catholics need a third party evil religion to unite them like the mother rough ridin' USA has. USA, USA, USA!

Can we talk about how shitty group A is compared to B & D?  C is a well balanced group the others are ridiculous.

B is clearly the toughest IMO. The groups are determined by a lottery aren't they? That's rough ridin' stupid. Germany, Holland, and Portugal should not be in the same group. The top four teams need to be in separate groups.

And D might not be as strong as it looks. There's no way to tell if England is going to get something going with their new manager. And France has been pretty shitty the past couple years. Still talented as crap though.

Russia and Czech Republic are pretty good but they are terrible compared to Spain, Germany, and Holland.
Title: Re: EUROS 2012
Post by: MakeItRain on May 20, 2012, 12:05:57 AM
Its a draw from seeding pods, just like the World Cup.  They should just be seeded by a multi nation committee, because the FIFA world rankings also blow, but it being FIFA and UEFA the very real possibility of sketchiness would be in play there.

Actually, I would like to see Portugal and The Netherlands emerge from group B, but I will still root for Germany if (when) they make it out. It's just a shame that all three of those teams were stuck in the same group.

Sometimes I will pick up a team because I like the way they're playing (usually that ends up being the Netherlands).  Other than that I agree, just a good time to enjoy some amazing football.

True story. A buddy of mine lives north of Amsterdam. He is a huge Netherlands fan. He wore a Netherlands Olympic jersey to a meeting (EMAN?). He is a big dude that can drink a lot of beer. I like to drink a lot of beer. I like the Netherlands.

I was completely disappointed with the performance of the Czech team. Baros needs to GTFO. On top of that the defense was absolutely horrible. I will say Russia capitalized on their opportunities, but their chances were absolutely given to them. It looks like they will win Group A pretty easily.

Well, England is the queen's team, and 4-4-2 is a formation that features four defenders, four midfielders, and two strikers.

Well there are certain terms you learn by listening to the commentators and British studio analysts, but if you're talking about people who start saying things like "Bloody hell" when talking soccer, then yes it is annoying.

i def. understand the soccer speak problem. sometimes its kinda hard to distinguish what words you should and shouldn't use. for example: "pitch". i feel zero remorse using that word, but i am aware that most people who hear an american say it cringe. "futbol" would be the obvious rub here. maybe speaking about soccer in a less american way makes people feel more wordly?  :dunno:

As a member of the fraternal order of goalies, I must add my two cents.  Joe Hart was all over the place.  There are certain things you look for when deciding which way the players going to shoot.  You have to focus on almost everything leading up to ball strike. Its hard to really explain.  All I know is Joe Hart wasn't focusing hard enough.  Thats why he was fitted for a clown suit.  The moment was too big for him.

In the book Scorecasting, it says that the best way to score on a penalty kick is to actually kick it straight down the middle, because the goalie almost always jumps to one side or the other.  Most players don't do it though because they don't want to look like idiots and not score because they kicked it straight at the keeper.  Not looking like an idiot is a surprisingly big motivator for athletes according to this book.

answer me this soccer guys:  the wichita wings goal was super small.  like refridgerator size iirc.  this goal is super big.  how come the wings would always score like 10 goals and these guys are lucky to squeeze out 1?  goalie technology come that far?

Americans are bigger and stonger than europeans as a result of not having our all of our strongest men killed in world wars.

They had to make the goals smaller because in normal regular soccer americans were scoring like 20 goals a game.

Seems pretty unfair that Italy have Mario Balotelli. What a beast. I honestly love everything about the guy.  He's an incredibly polarizing figure.  Now everyones going to see how mumped up his life really has been/is.

lol.   would have loved to see Portugal vs Italy.  2 sexiest players in the world - Ballotelli and Ronaldo ... dangit.

the Germans looked like ass yesterday.  they had their chances but didn't even come close to taking advantage of any of them.  if the Azzuri could have finished down the stretch it would have been an embarassing 4 or 5 goal loss.

the final will pit Pirlo vs Iniesta/Xavi in the midfield.  another matchup which will be fun Alonso, Pique and Ramos trying to hold down Ballotelli and Cassano.

Iniesta is going to get humiliated by balzareti.  I also wish that italy brought gattuso back in just for this game to scare the hell out of the soft midfield of Spain.  Get stuck in on xavi and fabregas and speed them up.

So I'm cheering for Spain.

They may just be the best national side to ever play the game. That being said, as soon as Thiago Motta went down, it was hopeless. Just no way a team can press forward with 10 men and not expose themselves with a team as talented as Spain.

Was his name Scott? If it wasn't he is a Scot. Also it would suck to be Scottish, the entire Isle is at the Euros and you're at home.

Stupid cousin of sw was saying Belgium's players aren't better than Italy's at like each position. I loled at him. They do play like 11 dudes who just met each other tho.

I pretty much never agree with your cousin's soccer takes, but understand what he's saying kind of. I'd take Italy's back 5 as a group over Belgium's. Agree that whichever team had Conte was going to win today. Had them playing like an incredible unit.

NBC works great and I've watched epl games before, but first time checking on ESPN today and it's firewalled. Woof, probably not worth it to tape it. Especially with USMNT QF tomorrow night.

@Spaces , let me give you a feel for the espn stream right now:

boisterous crowd in marseilles. my favorite crew is on the call (Tom Wilkinson on pbp & color commentary from Mark Strong). France creating chances, but no joy for either side as of yet. pretty even match TBH so far, but it feels like a matter of time before France break through.

Wow, some incredible posts and videos right here. Love this tournament, love this sport.

Northern Ireland also gets a shout for fans of the tournament imo. They've been loud and bouncy and a joy to watch.

pretend you are the fan of a single player and don't give a crap about the team he is on. what tournaments do you most want him to win? please order the private tournaments alongside national ones if possible.
you can include regular seasons since i think they are a title that matters a lot too.

here is my guess:

world cup
euro thing currently ongoing
champions cup thing
EPL title
bundesliga
the italian or spanish league title
i have no clue after this point

well if you don't give a crap whatsoever about the team and just the players enjoyment, then I'd think you'd pretty much just have to split it down

World Cup
Euro/copa/afcon
League
Confed/gold

Shaqiri goal of the tourney this morning. Only others that came to mind right away were Payet's free kick and Modric's wonder volley.

Poland win but don't look very good at all.

That's right, MOTHER FUCKIN SWANS, BITCHES!

Sure Poland got knocked out, but Fabianski and his Polish bros fought the good fight

Captain Ash and Neil Taylor have played no small part in this magical run for the last of the Isles nations

And super sexy stup Gylfi "Iceman" Sigurdsson, well you guys know

Swans, man
