cool guy. has the best job ever. Kansas City episode of 'No Reservations' airs on monday. and i'm excited to watch it.
-
Read his book, very good.
-
slowly making my way through 'kitchen confidential'. very enjoyable, i'm just not an avid reader so it's taking half a year.
-
Intrigues me bunches

yeah, his books are pretty good. it's kinda weird to watch as no reservations/his fame have taken off - he's got this precarious balance to maintain of old-school badass and rich-foodie-dude. i think he handles it surprisingly well
-
Saw his lecture in KC a few years back. Was great. Went to the meet and greet at the bristol after, really good food and drinks. Really a cool guy, probably a huge dick if you're on his wrong side. Looking forward to hearing him talk up OK Joes

Good call on the balance thing. I just started watching after he appeared on the daily show. He has that wonderful vibe where you imagine he's a dick to everyone else but not to you so it makes you feel cool.
-
He's never been a dick to anyone in the history of his show. Seems like probably the nicest guy in the world.
-
i met him a few years ago, nice guy - tall, like me (we generally are good people, minus sys)

I love when he says crap like this:
"[Rachael Ray is] selling us satisfaction, the smug reassurance that mediocrity is quite enough."
"So you’re talking someone that’s as stupid and talentless and messed up as Britney Spears cooking? Hasn’t it happened already? [...]I think we have a pretty good idea what that creature would look like if that happened. It would be called 'Semi-Homemade,' and she has a show on Food Network already."
"I don’t dislike Guy Fieri, I realized, after many viewings of his cooking shows, much soul-searching at my personal ashram and many doses of prescription hypnotics. I just dislike — really dislike — the idea that somebody would put Texas-style barbecue inside a rough ridin' nori roll."
-
none of that is being an dick though. that's just talking about people who are on tv while they are not in the room. i'm a much bigger dick than that do you retards on a daily basis and I'm not a dick at all. If anything I think he sucks up too much to everyone he meets on his show. anthony, every single time you have a drink with some random dude in some weird place isn't the greatest moment of your life. I'm sure he won't be offended if you don't tell him it is.
-
I never said he was a dick or that you weren't a dick. :dunno:
-
I never said he was a dick or that you weren't a dick. :dunno:
oh, I thought your quoting of me saying he wasn't a dick at all and then posting three things he said about tv chefs was insinuating that he is a dick. and I'm not a dick at all. I'm super nice and easy to get along with.
-
My mistake, really. I thought you kept saying he wasn't a dick because you thought I said he was.
-
I doubt he's a dick. Bet it'd be awesome to drink with him
-

Agreed. I regret bringing that term into the equation.
-
Love him....his books are pretty good, even the fiction.
-
I doubt he's a dick. Bet it'd be awesome to drink with him
that's what i did. he did a show in kc a few years ago and afterwards i went over to the bristol in the P&L to get my buzz on, then bourdain came in. and drank. he's pretty much exactly like you would expect him to be. a very cordial man.

i doubt it, i was actually inside the Bristol, not looking in the window wishing i was telling tony a good joke about jambone.

it was pretty meh, had some crazy russian named zamir with him and lots of shots of them walking through the west bottoms.
-
my bro in law has hung out w/ been around him a handful of times. says he's kind of a dick.

love zamir. i've noticed his love for "kansas" recently on twitter. pretty sure he thinks kansas city is in kansas. can't imagine why.
-
Bourdain is always drunk and high. Being faded can be misinterpreted as pompousness because you're too relaxed to bother with conversing with people seriously. He seems pretty damn cool, but I bet if you crossed him he could easily real life PI you

Love Bourdain. As a KC native i was anxious for the KC No Reservations but alas, no Travel Channel here and no rips of the episode online. :flush:

If you remind me in a few days, I'll put a viaka-quality version of it on youtube. Don't have Mrs. EuroCat Esq. report me for copyright infringement.
-
so now he has a show on CNN.
-
i enjoyed his twitter rant the night of his finale, and then this post.

Interesting!

A good friend of mine went to the same culinary school as Bourdain. Bourdain was at the school to do some speaking and ended up having beers with some students afterward. My buddy says he is cool as hell and smoked like a zillion cigarettes that night. He's had the opportunity to meet several celebrity chefs and says Bobby Flay is an bad person.

Do you have the Lebanon episodes? Mrs Rex has been trying to see those for awhile.

Gonna miss that show a lot.

That Lebenon episode was maybe the best of the entire series.
*edit- Just occured to me that there were two. I was referring to the first, scary stuff going on at that time in the region.
-
Lebanon was fantastic. My fav was the Saudi episode. My favorite moment in any is eating at the Parilla in Uruguay. Middle east and Southeast Asia are always winners.

It was supposed to come off of Netflix on the 16th so you may want to binge.

I still want to be him when I grow up....up until age 61.
-
i thought he was just loving the crap out of life and kicking ass constantly. this has me a little shook.

Some ppl know how to put up a pretty good front. Sucks.
-
You just never know.
I'm bummed, very sad.

Yes in all likelihood we all interact somewhat regularly with someone who is one push in the wrong direction from killing themselves.

which is why it's important to always be cognizant of the fact that no matter how bad of a day you're having, someone is having a worse one with much worse implications. knowing this should help you treat others with the kindness that they deserve to be treated with.

Yep. Also, it seemed pretty obvious to me that he was a guy who was battling demons. Loved the shows. Really talented guy.
-
he had tons of insecurities and flaws and he wrote and talked about them and how he was trying to fix himself. that's why everyone loved him. nobody loves a dumbshit trying to appear perfect. not genuinely.
-
and he treated humans all the same, which is probably an even bigger part
-
Totally agree
-
both those things are things everyone loved about fatty as well. so maybe that's something to think about if you want everyone to genuinely like you as a human being.
-
I totally agree. Was Fatty ever PI’d from the start? I just need a history lesson from PI’rs.
-
It’s easy to be humble when you literally start a PI board in 2010 and then 2018 hits you in the face all of a sudden, you’re clean from all of it. Everyone in your life has inflicted such an influence.
-
You guys started the boys will be boys theme, but laugh at mental illness. You have a part owner who legit fishes for weak ppl on twitter, so he can feed his ego. I love everyone here, but let’s stay consistent.
-
I think you have part of a valid critique. The expectations here are made known early though. If you can hang, great. If not, the board will let you know. I don't feel like people go out of their way to be mean though. I don't feel like this is a breeding ground for bullying. It just has (had?) high standards for posting. Not everyone can go to Harvard. And if you keep showing up for classes even though you weren't accepted, well, things might get very honest.
-
RIP Anthony

Your posts have as much substance as your avi picture has taste.

Fair, but you know what I was getting at.
-
Yeah, no, I get it.
-
 Hope all is well.
-
Well, you know, spending my evening on gE to see if people are talking about suicide. It's not as grim as it sounds though.
-
I get every take. I really do. I volunteer to be here. I get what I have coming at me. I legit love everyone here. I just think SD’s take was a little naive and I’m just here to help ppl understand what they might not know. Depression is genetic. How you deal with it, is up to the person dealing with it.
-
I don't know, man. Maybe go back and give his post another look. I didn't really take it that way. But, for sure, depression is a bad mamma jamma that none of us asked for, and not very many of us have a real good handle on how to deal with it. We're all just doing the best we can. Even the people who aren't depressed.
-
Fair and well written. You ever wonder if you were fairly medicated at the time and how things would have turned out with your talent. I always had the arm, but my mind lost it a n the last year.
-
wacky, I normally don't engage when you act weird but my post had nothing at all to do with you and I didn't read any of your posts or anything before posting.

He missed the point of your Fatty post entirely.
SD's not talking about someone being mean, or feeling like they were picked on. That had nothing to do with what SD posted (and Fatty was NEVER PI'd, BTW).
What SD was talking about were those characteristics that fit one of the profiles that is often associated with the type of mental illness that leads to self harm. Fatty had that. He was creatively brilliant. He was empathetic. He was hilarious. He was also depressive, and neurotic and anxiety ridden. So, apparently, was Anthony Bourdain. Not everyone with those characteristics kills themselves, and plenty kill themselves who don't have all those characteristics. But if you, or someone you know, has these characteristics, maybe keep an eye on that.
PETE PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT: A handful of years ago, I went through some things that are quite similar. I am very happy to report that today I consider life to be worth living. So, here's the thing...if you feel like that, you really CAN feel better again, but you will need the help of others. If you ask for it, and you do what they say, it will get better. You merely need willingness, open mindedness and honesty. The catch is that you don't get to know HOW it will get better or what "better" will look like.
But yeah, in the mean time, be nice to each other.
-
I wasn’t trying to be weird, SD. Just adding to the conversation. Thanks for sharing, Pete.
-
um, ya fff and stunner were PI’d
omg yes we pi’d them
they dgaf tho
-
I never knew fatty, I wish I did tho. Sorry about my takes. Just really animated about mental illness.
-

I'll take your word for it, you were on Fans before I was, but I certainly don't remember Fatty being PI'd by anyone. If anything, he was dishing it out.
-
he pi'd the eff out of people. and was pi'd in turn. this (wherever the eff we were) was a rougher place then.
-

Yea, I PI'ed him; but only so he would engage with me. It didn't work most of the time. This kind of upset me, cause it made me feel like I wasn't important enough for him to have a conversation with.
P.S. I feel bad about making Fatty jokes the day of his pasting. I just didn't read earlier posts about his passing, so I didn't know. I in turn got PI'ed quite a bit for this mistake that I wish I could redo on that day. Maybe this should be in Hall of Shame thread. :dunno:

This. There is so much occurring behind the public lives we lead. Many people just want to be known well enough to have someone see beyond the surface and ask, to truly pay attention.
