Title: The official oscar Pearl talking points thread
Post by: michigancat on March 27, 2012, 07:07:02 PM
So! You are a Wildcat fan very interested in hiring of our new basketball coach, and you probably want someone good. For KSU, the best possible hire is oscar Pearl. I'm sure you have many questions about why KSU should hire oscar, so I will address them in order.

Question 1: Is he any good?

Answer: Yes!

Quote
Milwaukee (Horizon League) (2001–2005)
2001–2002    Milwaukee    16–13    11–5    3rd
2002–2003    Milwaukee    24–8    13–3    2nd    NCAA 1st Round
2003–2004    Milwaukee    20–11    13–3    1st    NIT 1st Round
2004–2005    Milwaukee    26–6    14–2    1st    NCAA Sweet Sixteen
Milwaukee:    86–38    51–13

Tennessee (Southeastern Conference) (2005–2011)
2005–2006    Tennessee    22–8    12–4    1st (East)    NCAA 2nd Round
2006–2007    Tennessee    24–11    10–6    2nd (East)    NCAA Sweet Sixteen
2007–2008    Tennessee    31–5    14–2    1st (East)    NCAA Sweet Sixteen
2008–2009    Tennessee    21–13    10–6    T–1st (East)    NCAA 1st Round
2009–2010    Tennessee    28–9    11–5    3rd (East)    NCAA Elite Eight
2010–2011    Tennessee    19–15    8–8    5th (East)    NCAA 2nd Round
Tennessee:    145–61    65–31
Total:    231–99

Summary: 4 Sweet 16's, one Elite 8, 6 NCAA tourneys in 6 years at Tennessee, 2 NCAA's and one NIT in 4 years at Milwaukee.

NEXT.

Question 2: Won't we get put on probation?

Answer: NO. First of all, everyone should read this article from Mike Decoursey:

http://aol.sportingnews.com/ncaa-basketball/feed/2010-09/vols-penalties/story/hiring-oscar-pearl-would-be-well-worth-the-risk

We all know oscar has a three year "show cause" that can explain very well, including the NCAA:

Quote
A show-cause penalty is issued by the Committee on Infractions and explains how a coach or another administrator must have their athletically related duties limited, regardless of employer, for a set amount of time. If the person is now employed at a different school than where the violations occurred and they do not agree with the limitations, the school can appear before the committee to 'show cause' why they think the penalty should be reduced or changed.

He is banned from off-campus recruiting until August 2014, which I assume is the only punishment that will follow him. Challenge anyone that questions this to point to specific sanctions beyond the recruiting restriction. (they won't have a clue).

Question 3: LMAO, Currie won't want someone that is an NCAA risk, right?!?

Answer: Is Currie a pasty frat-parting resume builder? You bet your ass he is! What would look better on a resume than bringing on the most successful coach in Tennessee history? You clowns need to remember that Currie (sort of) hired and worked with this guy at Tennessee. He knows him. Currie has shown the NCAA that he takes a hard line on compliance with the Pullen/Kelly situation and ESPECIALLY with the Jamar situation. Currie has created perfect situation to take a guy like Pearl. "Look, I worked with oscar before and do not bend the rules on compliance. I was willing to run off one of the greatest coaches in KSU history in the name of compliance. oscar will not be a problem with me." And the NCAA is all about money, and personalities like oscar Pearl make them a lot more money than boring losers like Tad Underwood.

Question 4: But he can't recruit! How will we survive if our coach can't recruit???

Answer: oscar can recruit, but not off campus. He can evaluate off-campus, which means he can be seen at AAU events and High School shootarounds. He can recruit on-campus. His assistants will be able to recruit off-campus without restraint, and here is what they can sell:

Quote
The recruiting ban will be an overwhelming challenge, but every assistant coach selling Pearl’s next program would be selling the guy who made Dane Bradshaw a star as a 6-3 power forward, who made Chris Lofton into an All-American and who turned the Volunteers into a national power.

Additionally, off-campus recruiting bans aren't a death sentence. Kelvin Sampson landed Eric Gordon to Indiana while not being able to recruit off campus. We also need to think beyond the next two recruiting classes and toward the future - guys like Brad Underwood and Tad Boyel scare the crap out of me after the current roster starts to leave, but oscar Pearl has developed winners at EVERY level he's coached at. Suck it up for two years and think about the long term.

Question 5: I don't want my coach to be slimy and I don't want to sell my soul for wins. Isn't Pearl slimy?

Answer: HEY GUESS WHAT?!? KANSAS STATE HIRED THE BIGGEST SLEEZEBALL COACH IN THE WORLD WHEN THEY HIRED BOB HUGGINS. You can say it didn't work out, but in the end, it was the most brilliant hire any program has made in the last ten years. The turnaround KSU encountered is unprecedented, and it was all because we took a risk on a coach with "baggage".

ALSO, do you know what oscar did that makes him so "dirty"? He had a barbecue with his team and invited some recruits. Then he lied about it.

Question 6: And?

Answer: That's it.

In summary, use this information to get out there and get us to hire oscar Mother rough ridin' Pearl.

Is he a charismatic coach that would not only bring a lot of success on the court but also keep K-State in the national headlines and on the front page of ESPN with his adorable antics and all around loveable behavior?

Eddie Foglers just don't grow on trees and Currie and Shultz are entirely too straight laced to even consider him.  If oscar had no Show Claws, it would be a no brainer for Currie.

I mean, I never thought Weiser would ever consider Huggins...and he didn't...it took Fogler CONVINCING him to....I mean, Huggins was the first guy I wanted and Weiser's dumbass said he wasn't even considering Huggins.  And that's Weiser.  Currie's ass is much tighter.  Even if Currie gets desperate he won't hire him.

I agree that Pearl is extremely attainable and would crawl to get this job.  I agree that the "sanctions" are pure window dressing and wouldn't be all that restrictive.  But not with this AD.  He just doesn't have it in him to make this hire.

I don't really know much about it yet, I just started a Twitter for the first time last week after the Syracuse game and I have used it exclusively to harass John Currie (quite a bit).

Yes, we know, and we do not care. Same feelings were had by Weiser about Huggins before Weiser consulted with Eddie Fogler......who told him to go get Huggins and not to be a goddamned idiot.

This has probably already been discussed, but when will badke have the website up?

We need the website again.  That was the main reason we got Huggins.

Michigancat already has done the dirty work.

We need the website.

Good stuff. Only suggestion I really have on content (other than to make pages with awesome pictures/videos of Pearl) relates to the copy. We want this to look like a professional site, and as such, a professional site must abide by correct spelling rules. Therefore, change "SLEEZEBALL" to the correct "SLEAZEBALL", and change "oscar Mother rough ridin' Pearl" to "oscar Motherfucking Pearl."

Other than that..... :bball:

Don't think we ever decided. I posed the question a bit earlier but I don't think it was answered. I'm good with either, I guess, though a quick search on Twitter.com brings up a bunch of #teamPEARL stuff that doesn't seem to be related to oscar Pearl. So maybe #Pearl4KSU would be more definitive?

rusty, i love you.  but don't make me believe this.  i can't do it to myself.

GO MAKE IT HAPPEN

An AD fighting for his life and future career would probably take this gamble.

Wait, who's KSU's Coach again? I forgot his name.

lol at male genitals fans.  every single national media personality has called South Carolina hoops as the place where coaches go to die.

Frank is a good coach but he will kill his career there.  He could sell tradition, a passionate fanbase, and facilities at KSU.  What will he sell at South Carolina?  A couple of bumkins like yourselves wearing  :opcat:.

George Santayana once said "those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."

It has become a mantra that many people believe in...

But sometimes repeating the past does not bring condemnation...

In fact, it can bring great success...

Quote
"I found him to be very impressive and very candid. And I just thought, 'Well, K-State's not Tennessee,' "Schulz says. "We're going to provide a tremendous academic advising operation here ... and our compliance people know all the rules and regulations of the NCAA. And John Currie operates from the moral high ground. So we aren't going to have any NCAA violations."

Quote
Pearl, 52, is entering his 28th season as a college coach. "Hopefully I'm smarter," he says. "Hopefully, doing this for as long as I've done it, I've picked up some better ways to do things."

Quote
All this led to a remarkable clause in Coach Pearls’ new contract with Kansas State.  Under the agreement, Pearl would be guaranteed at least $1,500,000 per year for the first three years so long as he refrains from doing anything “which results in material injury to the reputation of the university.”

Currie really seems to believe that this time things will be different.  “A lot of our supporters think it has to be one or the other, win or do things right, but I don’t see why it has to be that way. We can do both. We will do both.”

Quote
"I am really excited about this. I am excited about this opportunity," Pearl said at the news conference in which his hiring was officially announced. "I do not know that I have ever been around nicer people, people more committed to doing things the right way. The more we talked, the more excited I got."

Quote
"With oscar Pearl here, the magic has returned," Schulz said. "We had reservations about everything you read about in the paper and all the things we've heard about for years. But when I met with him, we went through the whole thing and John met with key people with the NCAA about five times, just to make sure everything was OK.

"oscar Pearl is a great coach, and the thing I found out now that he's a really good friend of mine is he's very humorous. He's got one of the best sense of humors I've ever seen."

Quote
"I know we made the right choice," Schulz said. "Period. Amen. Good night."

Man sys, I don't like to see you this jaded/bitter.

it's like when germany lost ww1.  at lot of people got bitter and they ended up killing 10 million people.  it would have been better if they hadn't distracted themselves with idle hatreds and false hopes and had instead just focused on exacting vengeance on the one person who was responsible for destroying their bball program.

i don't like comparing myself to hitler, but perhaps if hitler had focused on germany's currie instead of genocide, he'd be looked at as a hero today.

Brad Underwood . . . Pre-Pearl Interim Coach.

   hit the recruiting trails oscar, huggs style.  EMAW welcomes you with open arms.  I'm riding this pipe dream all the way to level 8-4.

BTW, get that damn site back up.  I don't care if we hire someone else.  KSU has to be the school/ fanbase pushing hard for Pearl from now until he is hired by someone eventually.

From your lips to God's ears    35 up, 6 down

Idiom expressing a wish that the desires of the person to whom the saying is spoken will come true.

The original, literal meaning of the saying indicates that the speaker wishes that whatever the addressee has just said will be heard by God and answered.   :excited:

May be used sarcastically, in which case it is roughly equivalent to "good luck with that."
John: Hopefully, my investments are going to return 400%!

Mike: From your lips to God's ears.    :dubious:

He didn't put posters up or anything, he just sat on the porch like a goon and waited. That little boy's gotta think: 'You got a pet. You got a responsibility.' I was sitting behind Larry Brown behind the KSU bench at the Big XII tournament. I went up to speak to him about KSU and general things. I got his autograph while fully dressed in Purple. Was it a sign???????? Unfortunately, I didn't have the foresight to think he was a candidate for interim coach pre pearl.

I can upload the picture when I get home later tonight.

Interm coach can't be a KSU Alumn unless Underwood would stay on that basis. He would have to know prior and agree to it. Very complex situation. You won't be able to fire a coach without cause in 2 years, especially a KSTATER.

Brown, while unlikely, would be ideal.
Bob Knight actually would be a good choice to be honest. Maybe he has an itch that he could fill in 2 years.
Underwood would be fine if he agreed to it.

Tad would be horrible because he wouldn't agree to it and Currie wouldn't fire him in 2 years.
Jank/Henson would be terrible because they wouldn't and you certainly wouldn't be able to fire in 2 years.
none of the other candidates on the GPC list would be good for that either.

Can anyone that has contact with him politely advise him that he could secure recruits for the next few years while he's not coaching ala Huggins. It really could be easy for a oscar Pearl to have the next 2 classes locked down in the next several weeks. Hell the school could have him unofficially hired over the next month or two while he's out recruiting but neither announce it until it's ready.

Keep Underwood on the staff and have the current players prepared to play for Brucey.

Too EASY

This is the most reasonable. Underwood would have to agree to be an Interm coach due to the fact that Currie wouldn't be able to fire a KSTATER after 1-2 years.

I mean, seriously.  I'd be 100% down with that.

Get the staff in place, have him agree to our boy Underwood as the interim coach?

Let him kick back for another year and he rolls up in here like a boss in 2014 to take over the reigns.

Could it happen?

No.

But, it's a wonderful thought to divert my attention from Tad Boyle's disgusting face.

Per Wikipedia: In his 38 year coaching career, Larry Brown had 13 different jobs.  His first head coaching job was at Davidson where he lasted for most of a summer before resigning.

2 years . . . perfect!

Now that you retards have oscar's attention you clearly need to tip ESPN on his impending hire.

No one will be friends with you if you have that kind of attitude.

No, but he's right.  Someone get Gottlieb on this.

It's not going to take on a life of its own until it escapes goEMAW in a big way.  Should probably tip oscar to check the current roster as well ... is he aware he can win the Big XII next season without recruiting anyone?   That'll kill off one year of his show cause order and it'll be just as if there were only one remaining right now.

Why not just hire him anyway? Not being able to recruit at all for 2 years and then having a ton of success is way better than being able to recruit terrible players for 6 years and destroying the program like everyone else is going to do. I just don't get it.

Eff him; he wouldn't know the "K-State way" if it jumped out of the woods and raped him.

The "K-State way"? I know what that is, damn it; in football terms, it's where we accept either Snyder, or everything before him. Don't take us to the rough ridin' edge, and then break down...year after year after year.

In basketball, the "K-State way" is get us back to an Elite 8-style program, or just dump some nut like Asbury back on us. All or nothing. Stop getting us close, pointing out what we could be, and then laughing maniacally as you turn us back around and kick us in the butt.

I don't give a crap what Schulz said; if he wants to prevent a potentially armed uprising, he'd better damn well consider HCBP. If Currie doesn't want to get turned into Swiss cheese by angry wildcats armed with pitchforks, he'd better damn well consider HCBP.

If we get some douche like Boyle, Jank, Henson, et al...burn this [redacted] to the ground. Scatter the ashes. Dance like wild injuns around the flames while the band Wabash's its ass off.  :bang:

Would be the equivalent of hiring that D-Nozzle at St. Mary's.

I don't even know what Jankovich or Henson would be considered.  Boyle would be a considerable step up from Wooly, but still horrible based on maintaining expectations.

Pearl had limited choices because of his baggage, but landed a slightly better job than Frank. Auburn had a nice run in the 80s (while cheating a lot) and went to the Sweet 16 in 2003.

Still its a tough job and Barbee is leaving him a program that hasn't been above .500  in 5 seasons and hasn't been to the NCAAs since 2003.

If that's really the case, and he just took the first real job offered to him, then it sounds a lot like the mistake that Frank made. Hopefully it works out a little better for him than it has for Frank so far.

In summary, use this information to get out there and get us to hire oscar Mother rough ridin' Pearl.

oscar just took Auburn to the Final Four. Remember when we had hope for our program for a few days? Even in a year when we won a lot, we still lose the oscar-off. We got the wrong oscar and I'm still salty about it.

Remember that time oscar Pearl was basically on his knees praying to be considered for the KSU Katz job?

Question - oscar Pearl wiggles his way out of his show cause and takes the K-State job in 2012. More or less success than 2 big 12 titles, an elite 8 and 5 tourney appearances?

I came across a job opening the other day that I think would be perfect for you! As I am sure you are aware Kansas State University now has a vacancy for their position as head basketball coach for their men's program.
With your history of success at Milwaukee and the University of Tennessee you would be a perfect fit here. To top it all of your good buddy from your days at rocky top, John Currie, is now the Athletic Director at Kansas State.
I look forward to seeing you in purple body paint soon!

Only one coach in the Frank/oscar Pearl/oscar Weber love triangle hasn't reached a Final Four since 2012 :frown:

What makes it even worse is that we just experienced Peak oscar and the last two years will not be duplicated by oscar Weber again.

Wow, I had forgotten how amazing this thread was, well done everyone.  Imagine how much better K-State would be at everything if we were allowed to make the decisions.  Just imagine it.  Wow.

How much fun would kat hoopz be if we had the right oscar in place? How much more vibrant would this board be? Hurts to think about.

But wouldn't we have Doug Gottlieb (sp) if goEMAW got it's way?

Doug was always a distant second to oscar Pearl, aka the real oscar.

Almost recruiting oscar Pearl to KSU was probably the Magnum Opus of my message boarding career.
