These towns sound pretty made-up. No wonder SD is such a 'neck and loves NE so much. NE is like Mecca for 'necks.

Like a NEecca? or NEcka?

Both towns require mass alcohol consumption, Engineer must've been drunk

Watching Ken Burns' "The Dust Bowl" and Meade got a mention!

I'd be a lot warmer and a lot happier with a belly full of Meade.

How is the Meade indy music scene?

When people tell me I should read a book, I tell them I'll put it on my list so they'll shut up. I don't have any list.

The jewel of Meade County makes the New York Times!

Also, that Main Street:
-
a full selection of groceries requires a 14-mile drive to Meade, the county seat
-
the Plains HS is a consolidated school with Kismet, KS. It's called Southwestern Heights. It's a perennial whipping boy for your Meade Buffaloes.
-
plains claims that their main street is the "widest main street" in the USA or world or something. it's not really that wide so I don't think they have truly vetted their claim. they have a "wide main street" festival or dance or something every year where the hicks gather together and drink keystone light and what have you.
-
@Stevedave, both my parents were born right around Eskridge, KS (Near Mission Valley HS-3A), and everytime they opened a grocery store it closed in a matter of years/months. I'm rooting you on tho! :ohno:

would assume sd does not want the grocery store to be successful in plains.
without it, meade will continue to be a booming metropolis with residents traveling in from near and far to shop. with it, there will be less malnourished adolescents in plains that would be better athletes and challenge his buffaloes.
-
Oh. I didn't really read the article. I just assumed Meade was trying to get a grocery store. My bad.
-
I went from Fowler to Meade once to shop.
-
I just figured everyone came to Garden City for groceries.

I bet the store in Meade keeps those hayseeds from Plains in their place with a unyielding "No Out of Town Checks" policy.
-
Plains is full of hayseeds? Check out Meade, from this totally legit public radio website:
"The rainbow flag means different things to different people. To some, it's the symbol of the rainbow coalition, and stands for racial equality. For others, it's a symbol of gay pride. And to a 12-year-old boy, it was just a pretty flag that he gave as a gift to his parents. They run an Inn in Meade, Kansas, and they decided to run the flag out front. They got some surprising reactions from their neighbors. Barbara talks with JR Knight, the boy's father and owner of the Lakeway Hotel, about some not so colorful goings on about town."
Also, steve dave, I think the days of Southwestern Heights being Meade's whipping boy are over. The Buffaloes only won 24-21 this year.

meade just got a new liquor store as well kids. Liquor Ranch. has a 5 star yelp rating!

a fun activity is to look up small towns on yelp and read all the 5 star reviews from locals mixed in with the occasional 1 or 2 star review from someone from out of town.
-
Erin B seems to love it. Looks like she's also a huge fan of Smoke Hoss.

I was passing through here on my way to KC from LA and dropped by for some lunch before hitting the road for another 8 hours.
This place isn't terrible for being in the middle of what seems like nowhere, but it wasn't super amazing either.
Their fries were alright, and the French Dip sandwich was acceptable.
However, their swiss burger seemed off. It just mostly tasted like a mechanically separated beef patty blended with pork, and took on the flavor and consistency of a hotdog. I'm not quite sure what was happening but I wasn't enjoying my meal as much as I wanted to.
If I pass by this area and stop by for food I'll just try to avoid their burgers I guess? I'm not sure it left an awesome impression on me.
Despite their questionable burgers, their service was actually very good.
I also got caught in a really lame speed trap on my way out of Meade and got a ticket for going ten over.
Ugh, I already greatly dislike you, Meade Kansas. Thanks for that.

wow, this is a very fun activity that I had not thought of before. It's not an activity that takes up very much time, however. still enjoyed the 1-star review of my hometown McDonald's from this guy, though!

he's also not a fan of the KC Garment District Museum. Kind of impressed for an old guy that he's only got a handful of 1* reviews out of 401.
-
a fun activity for an old guy would be 1 starring a shitload of places constantly.

Garen M has a new fan, me.

There is currently an episode of ‘My 600 pound life’ on TLC and the gigantic fat lady is from Meade!

If she started at 600, that is more like a moral victory.

Yeah, her sister was younger than me.

Odder still is that the National Transportation Safety Board’s accidents database lists no record of a plane crash in Iowa at any time between Abdul’s St. Louis and Denver-area shows in 1992. There are only a handful of aircraft accidents, in fact, in the general vicinity during the timeframe between June 19, 1992, and June 22, 1992—in Meade, Kansas, in Rocky Ford, Colorado, in Brighton, Colorado, in Falcon, Colorado. None of them seem likely flyovers 30 to 40 minutes into such a trip. None of the descriptions in their accident reports remotely match Abdul’s story.
:surprised:

I don't think mocat actually knows anybody from Meade and is trying to act cool pretending he does.

Was lucky enough to be on the call today. Tough squad and well-deserved title. Snapped a 20-game win streak by Little River.

I always have thought if I ever win the lotto one of the first things I do is donate a lot of money toward my hometown cafe.

Well, that place is in the “bar” that changes ownership/name/bit every 18 months or so. Sad but not unexpected I guess

In Hays I used to regularly drink/party with a crazy guy from Meade. Everyone called him Cat, I think his real name was Mark Keller. He lived a couple houses down. He was a bigger guy that was not to be messed with & very protective. He was the neighborhood regulator. Good guy.

I’m not from Hays, but I went to Fort Hays for a couple years before transferring to K-State. I met Mrs. Hamburg there & she stayed a few more semesters finishing her degree, so I spent a lot of time back in Hays my junior & senior year too.

I lived there from '80 to '88. I was sad to move since it was the town I was born in.
