what's the goal of this sandwich?  What time of day will it be eaten, by whom, and what season of the year?

Did I just get done mowing the yard before eating the sandwich, or am I about to sit down and watch a game?

There are sooo many variables that need to be pinned down before this can proceed further.

All legitimate questions, CNS. It will be eaten at 12:17 tomorrow afternoon. You have just finished cleaning the house and are ready to watch basketball for the rest of the day. hth

Rye is fantastic when warm, but only ok when at room temp.

I don't know another sandwich bread that changes my opinion so dramatically by simply changing 20degrees or so.

This is great timing, because I just made the perfect sandwich last night.

Roast beef (medium rare, thickly sliced), honey smoked ham, drizzled in homemade ranch, with cheddar and parmasean, on multi-grain bread, thrown on a panini grill.

Is it possible to have the perfect sandwich without a panini? No, it is not.

Hi Stevesie, usually fully enjoy your posting. However, I have to wonder why you went with the hayseed route of putting ranch on roast beef instead of the solid horseradish sauce/roast beef combo.

Thanks bakerman, good to hear from ya. You know honestly, I just didn't think the horseradish would go well with the ham. Admittedly, it was very hayseedy, but also very enjoyable.

ChiCat - first of all how are you? I agree with your post. I thought it would be a nice idea to have goEMAW, as a team, to make a sando together. Some people thought it would be a good idea to go bananas and throw their favorite sando out there, on their own. Is this America?

I had this at a local sandwich shop.

The Purple Turkey

Smoked turkey and swiss cheese grilled.  Open it up while it is still hot and add one dollop of grape jelly.
The jelly melts and infuses the turkey with sweetness.

You could probly use any kind of bread but I like texas toast for mine.

What is everyone thinking for cheese? Provolone goes good with everything.

Are you seasoning the chicken itself and not just relying on other sandwich components?

Hmm, that was my first thought and obvious answer.  Salt/pepper the chicken well and if you like, chipotle tobasco has good flavor and the heat is pretty mild.  That would be my solution.  Or chili-lime chulula.  They could be a solid marinade...

This needs to be a poll, where we vote best:

bread (buttered, EVO, etc.)
meat
cheese
veggies
fixinins
prep method.

Star with bread and vote it in and we all get to make the champ and report.

Why has this continued so long?  The perfect sandwich is white bread, brisket, and barbecue sauce.  This isn't that hard folks.

I vote that we pick independently and that limestone has to eat something terrible

Would obviously violate the spirit of this thread, which was to make the "perfect" sandwich.

Ah hell, you're right.

So do we start with the bread and work in or the meat and work out?

I will vote sourbough.

I second slightly toasted sourdough, depending on how this goes, i may switch slightly toasted to panini'd.  Are we talking roll or a couple slices?  I vote a roll.  The more crust will help to hold in future juices

If we are going with a roll, it about has to be butter toasted, right?

I guess we can butter the outside only.  butter is not really great on the inside.  Seems like something Charlie Weiss would do.

I really like a nice roll, chewy on the outside and soft in the middle.  Fresh Jimmy John's bread is the tits.

Slightly buttered outside and garlic oil brushed on inside and toasted

Because those are only made by white midwesterners with their indian food leftovers and aren't a genre at all?   :dunno:

we actually have a grill pan and I will just heat up it and a second pan and throw the sandwich on the grill pan and then put the second hot pan on top of it.  works great.  I do use a tinfoil covered brick for making cuban sandwiches on the grill in summer.

I'm not trying to limit it to one cheese, just saying at least some smoked gouda. I'm thinking 3 different cheeses minimum.

If we're picking independently, then Limestone is going to be eating a terrible sandwich.

Why has this continued so long?  The perfect sandwich is white bread, brisket, and barbecue sauce.  This isn't that hard folks.

Gross. I don't want your filthy white bread sticking to the roof of my mouth.

no denied. if we're talking real bbq sandwiches (which is a completely different genre imo) then you must have white bread

I used to make sammiches for work that were salami, Pepperoni, pepper jack cheese, and spicy mustard.

They were tastey but apparently awful for me. That 6 pack isn't going to be crafted on that sammich diet.

I've found that people who are famous for something are super, super, super into talking about what they are famous for even if they pretend to be annoyed by it. they aren't annoyed, they are rough ridin' giddy.

throw some salami, ham, and capicola on a hoagie, little Italian dressing, onion, whatever else you want. Wrap that bitch in foil and throw it in the oven for 15 minutes on 350 and you have yourself a delicious hot sandwich

houlihans has a good french dip.

I like both hot and cold.  But I wouldn't heat up a sandwhich with lettuce and tomatoes.  But I would if it was mostly meat and cheese.

I enjoy the hot sandwiches from Fire House subs(most recent sandwich).  But I also only like tuna/chicken/ham/or beef salad sandwiches cold.  It obviously depends on what the sandwich is on what temp you go with, but if I were going to make a pretty standard cold cut over lunch I would always throw it in the pannini press.  Does that make me a hot sandwhich guy?

I like both, but I usually prefer hot. If I'm eating a hot sandwich with lettuce and tomatoes, I just heat up the sandwich before addling the lettuce and tomatoes.

A place in Winter Park has a club with avocado on ciabatta.  The quality varies a bit based on who is working that day.  Amateur staff members only cut the chicken in half.  You end up having to grab the sandwich harder to ensure the chicken breast does not fall out and then the avocado squeezes out.  Really limits you to a sit down meal

I used to work at a gourmet sammy shop. All I'm saying is that a warm roast beef, sautéed onions, aioli, provolone, horse radish, on a toasted rye is to die for. We called it the Sgt. Pepper.

Is that BH corned beef any good?   Im craving corned beef today but I don't know if I feel like going through the process to make my own.   Also, Im hungry now.   Guess I could throw some in a crockpot and enjoy when I come home half plowed tonight.
I thought it was pretty good. Would have been better with kraut  and swiss. It wasn't as good as crock pot corned beef though. The horseradish  cheddar was superb. Could dig some more kick in it though.

I love horseradish chedder.   I put it on some hot roast beef.   :lick:

Sandwiches are kind of overrated. The bread takes up so much space in your mouth that you're basically covering like two-thirds of your tastebuds from tasting all the good stuff on your sandwich.

lately i've been on a ham sandwich kick.  i think this is the first time in my life i've ever binged on ham sandwiches.

here's my usual-

then i put a slice of american cheese
then the boar's head applewood smoked ham
then mustard
then crushed lay's regular potato chips
then the top layer of potato bread

question for the ham heads out there- should i add a layer of Duke's mayo to the sandwich?
like i said, i'm kind of a ham noob so wasn't sure.                                                                                                           go cats

I forgot the dill sandwich slices because I am a moron and they would have been a great placement between the lettuce and hot brisket.  Or just stick with the pickles and jettison the lettuce because I can’t really say I tasted it with everything else going on.

We have a couple of standard sammiches in the SF household. The main one is boars head tavern ham, white american, some lettuce and tomato on whole wheat. I've been using those circle flatbread thingies which I like a lot. The key to this basic sammich is the sauce. About weekly, I take some greek yogurt with some mayo (I use the yogurt to make it healthier than straight mayo) and about a half can of chipotle peppers and sauce. Blend smooth and wallah. Its an easy/somewhat healthy spicy mayo we use on about everything. Pro tip, it tastes almost identical to just using mayo but the texture is off. Adding a bit of mayo, more chipotle sauce and some lemon juice thins it out a bit to be more like mayo only.

I will also smoke chicken breasts, slice, then add avocado, tomato, onion, and the sauce. This is Mrs SF favorite sammich. Both very simple and delish.

I am very jealous of AST's sammiches. They look delicious, but I think I cut my gums just looking at those picks. I apparently have weak gums and really toasted bread tears apart my mouth like I am chewing on glass.

Thanks.

So get your griddle/pan hot.  Add dash of olive oil or butter to coat pan.  Here is the trick.  Brush the bread with mayonnaise, not butter.  It crusts up nicely but without getting hard.  Perfectly gum friendly.  If you brush the bread with butter, you have to basically overcook it to crust up.  But mayo works perfectly.  And don’t be a weirdo ad say “I don’t like mayo.”  You can’t really taste it.  It is for crusting.

Smoked a NY strip roast on Sunday.  Turned the remaining into cheesesteaks tonight.  Went with a small brioche “roll” so I could have more than one type.  One with mushrooms, onions, and peperoncini.  But the winner was mushroom, onion, and Calabrian peppers.

And frozen Arby’s curly fries to keep the meal classy!

Also, I am fat af.  That 2 small rolls was way more than one hoagie.

Put the roast in freezer for an hour to stiffen the roast up a bit and got my sharpest knife and started slicing/shaving.  I did it in carbon steel pans inside as it was 103 with a 108 heat index when I got home and I was not willing to be outside to cook after working outside all day.

So I can’t do gluten or dairy anymore as you guys know. They have this brand of bread at HEB but only one of their kinds and it’s super good. Been making sandwiches with it and my mom made gluten free stuffing for Thanksgiving using it. Well, these other kinds of bread from that same brand came today and I’m super excited! It opens up a bunch of new things I can make again like Philly cheesesteaks and stuff! :excited: :excited: :excited:

For the last 2 months I've been eating "Pizza toasters" for lunch a couple of times a week which is a sandwich I totally invented and love.

Get some fresh hoagie rolls from your local price chopper.

Slice in half but not fully, keep a hinge. Put some marina on each side of the bun. Put some capers on the marina then a couple slices of provolone.

Add slices of pepperoni/salami/whatever Italian themed meat then add some more provolone on top and stick it in the oven (350ish) for like 10 minutes.

Pull out and cut in half. You can customize it anyway you want, sometimes I put onions/olives/japs on it after it comes out...sometimes I'll put some giardia pepper mix on there. Just a super basic hot Sammy lunch that is delicious.

You can also add the toppings before you put it in the oven but put them under the top layer of the cheese otherwise they dry out.

Does anyone else eat their sandwiches straight off the cutting board or do you always use a plate?

The reason I ask is you make a masterpiece of a sandwich does it need to go on a plate?

Also my go Sandwich as of late has been the following.

Hyvee San Fran Sourdough
Mayo, Sometimes Dijon
Iceberg Lettuce
Maters if they look nice
Vlasic Dill Stackers
Mezetta Hot Banana Peppers
Fannestill Party TIme Ham
Sharp Cheddar from the Hyvee Deli Counter.

I cut my cheese straight off the block so no cutting board is necessary.

This is going to shock and/or gross some of you out, but I would swap the pickle for some straight up raw onion.

I made a pimento and cheese with boiled eggs sandwich, grilled.  Very good.

Boiled eggs are a very underused sandwich ingredient.

Swap the Vlasic for something that has to be refrigerated at the store, like Claussen.
