Thinking about getting some of these. Not a music prick so it doesn't really bother me that much that "it doesn't sound as good as wired speakers maaaaaaan". Anyone have them?
-
man, what a prick.

I knew Rusty would be mean. :embarrassed:

Any other wireless suggestions? I have heard these and they sound pretty good. Really like the convenience of the app and being able to control each individual speaker.
-
ya my friend has them and likes them. i just can't get past the price. i'm not a home theater guy so i don't have any recommendos. i guess if you got the ducats....

how would you utilize the controlling of individual speakers?
-
coincidentally I will be helping a friend set up a stereo system. And I think he's decided to go with sonos. As far as wireless systems go, I guess there really isn't a comparison. So if you don't want to wire your entire house then it may not be a bad idea. And really, when you consider you can do an entire house for like 2 large, its not that bad.

now that sonos came out with their all in one speaker you can control any speaker through the interface. its pretty sweet.

Do you know what the bridge is for? I have looked and I don't quite know if I need it or not. I thought I had to have it to connect more than one speaker, but Best Buy guy said he didn't think so.
Hopefully they come out with an outdoor one soon.

i'm pretty sure you need it to create your sonos network. so yeah, you need it if you are gonna be connecting more than one system. are you going with just the speakers or are you going to be integrating existing stereo?

It is kind of confusing and will probably end up being a disaster for me to set up, but I plan to start off with the Play 5 and Play 3 initially and just stream from iTunes on my computer. I am pretty sure I can also stream Pandora and XM directly from the speakers when they are hooked to my wireless. I am not sure I need anything else. :dunno: You can buy a dock to stream stuff directly from your phone or iPod, but I will be going straight from the computer anyway. I am going to try and talk to a non dumbass at best buy before I make any final decisions.

quote fail.
its a pretty fool proof system from what i understand. you'll need the bridge, the play 5 and the play 3. set up your speakers wherever you want to and play pandora, sirius, spotify, last.fm, and whatevs else they allow and start playing. if you already have a sound system set up, it might not be a bad idea to get the Connect or Connect Amp instead a play 5, but thats all up to whatever you want to use. The system i'm setting up for my friend will incorporate multiple play 5's, play 3's, a Connect, a bridge, and maybe a Connect Amp. I think he's also gonna get some iPads for controllers/to have an iPad. it all depends on your set up, but the idea that you can have a proper music set up in any room, and have multiple songs playing throughout your entire house is pretty cool. Apparently you can also program it to start playing certain songs, radio stations, etc.. at a certain time. Could use it in the bedroom as an alarm, or whatever.

massive fail. I couldn't even figure out my question. :runaway:
I don't have a system at all which is why I like this idea. I will be able to stream from my computer to the speakers or listen to Pandora or XM from the speakers without a bunch of stuff. Also love that all I need is my iPhone or iPad and I can control everything. If I like it I will expand and may need the amp or something else, but right now I am just going to get 2 and see how it works.
Thanks for the help

Apple airport express and whatever elite speakers you already own or want to plug into it. It's a thing of beauty especially with air play.
-
Lol, I'm pretty sure you mean "mono," and it's singular, even when it's plural. I'd get stereo quality speakers though, mono is pretty outdated.
-
Just got my Sonos. Amazingly bad ass. Exactly what I wanted. The truly amazing part is how easy they are to set up. I can barely turn on a computer and I didn't have to kill one person during setup. Currently jamming to my fav pandora stations that I am controlling with my iPad. :gocho:

I ordered the sonos mounting kit for the soundbar for $40 on amazon. they sent me 2. anyone need one?
-
also, interesting thing I learned about amazon is that if they send you too much stuff you are allowed to keep it.

If you're streaming internet internet audio, you don't have the ear to appreciate the differences in quality of audio. You're just passing for loud & bass / treble control....

Meh. Once you're over 35, hearing starts getting too shitty to worry so much about audio quality.

If you've never experienced streaming Pandora "Disney" through a sonos soundbar you've essentially been shoving shards of glass in your peasant noob ears your entire lives.

Sonos sucks incredible balls
-
no it doesn't
-
what is a good airplay compatible speaker?
-
no it doesn't
The hardware is fine but the interface for actually playing music is awful. Like, incredibly clunky and gross.
I'm guessing it's overpriced, too.

you're pretty much the only person in the world who feels that way so i guess you're just not a good software reviewer

I'm sure it's great if you want to set up your Morrissey Pandora station and forget it.

Sonos isn't Bang & Olufsen but it's a fine middle of the road consumer grade product.

must not ready for a power user like yourself. for everyone else on the planet it works great.

feels pretty elite knowing how to use such a complicated software interface like the one sonos has built

My entire crib is sonos stuff and I love it. Super easy to use. Does Spotify. That's all I care about.

So connecting to a BlueTooth speaker(s) is hard?
Weird, seems, easy.
-
:D
-
I like Sonos. I can put on Spotify, a record, or a Royals game and play the audio in multiple rooms if I am cleaning or something. Super easy to use.
If you are a Tidal/lossless audio person then I'm sure you can do better for the money but a good mix of audio quality and convenience.
-
Royals radio newb here...do you stream the radio broadcast? For free?

I usually listen to mp3's rather than spotify. A spotify playlist that you've already setup in spotify is fine. Making your own playlist from mp3's is a pain in the ass. If I could just stream something from my own player (like you can w/ a bluetooth connection) it would be fine.
Although someone in the office was trying to stream Lemonade via tidal and she couldn't figure out how to stop it from repeating the same song over and over. (could have been user error but that's 100% of users in my office that hate the interface)
-
all of my mp3s got trashed like their CD predecessors

yeah, I'm a creature of convenience. when we built our house I had the entire place wired for sound. like 7.1 in the living room, wired for a central stereo deal in like an audio visual stack thing with our modem/router/NAS with speakers all over the place and crap. I know nothing about that stuff. LOL SONOS EVERYWHERE.
-
Chromecast audios are the new Sonos. Hook them to whatever BA speaker you want. Group them. About to work with google home.
-
chromecast audios are not the new sonos and not even in the same ballpark as sonos but keep telling yourself that good grief

Streaming from apps I use, check.
Group speakers, check.
Portable, check.
Hook to dumb speaker, a/v already in my place, check
What am I missing out on for the price difference?
-
well, for beginners- sonos is all of those things, chromecast is none of them without purchasing additional components
how you can think that chromecast audio is anything like a sonos system is really strange
is every streaming solution the new sonos? apple tv, new sonos? fires tv stick, etc..no, they're not.

That's actually a benefit of Chromecast over Sonos. I have speakers in my bathrooms, living room A/V, bluetooth portable....before they were all separate. Now I can stream to each speaker with a separate source....or I can group them together in any combo I want.
I get the handiness of the Sonos system too...I just don't see it worth the price difference. What am I missing?
These reviews seem to be comparing Chromecast Audio w/ Sonos favorably :dunno:

i'm not going to defend the cost of sonos, because everyone knows it's expensive.... but for someone who is looking for an incredibly simple to implement, out of the box surround solution that offers high quality audio, it can't be beat. if you don't want to pay for sonos that's fine, but sonos is more than the streaming solution that chromecast is.
and i can do the same thing with my sonos system that you're touting as an advantage that chromecast has over sonos.
-
the chromecast seems fine if you have a bunch of already set up and powered speakers at home. i guess you could compare it to the original sonos whose function was that (attaching it to existing powered speakers). I don't have that sonos thing. I have all sonos speakers with all that built in them.

How dare Gizmodo compare these two unrelated products!

'clams died on that speaker hill and gizmodo just immortalized it
-
I played with my brother's chromecast setup this weekend and loved it. IMO the downside us you need powered speakers as sd mentioned but once get over that I think it's great. Granted I was just using my phone but it was super easy and much faster than sonos.
-
IMO the downside is you need powered speakers
that's why it's nothing like sonos

Not this again.
If you don't have speakers already in place (which I thought the world had this but whatevs) I can see sonos as a superior way to go... But if you have speakers, go chromecast and get the same experience.... Then you can buy that Mercedes!

Glad this popped up again. We have 3 Play 1s, a play 3, and a play 5 disbursed around our main floor and upstairs. We are planning on finishing the basement in the next 6 to 12 months and I'm trying to decide on home theater/surround options.
Would the Soundbar/Sub and a pair of play 1s in the rear be a good setup? I'm assuming that's going to run about $1,500 ish... Worth it? I have all the necessary outlets in the right places. I think it would be easier than wiring up a 5.1 and trying to figure out a decent 5.1 system.
-
the playbar/sub combo is increds, i can't say how uber elite it would be with the p1's boned in but i'm sure it would be better than chromecast.
amazon currently has the two p1s, playbar, sub at $1,795

While I can see the appeal of Sonos in typical living situations I can't imagine $1,500 in traditional gear won't out perform Sonos in a dedicated space like a home theatre. The new Dolby Atmos standard with "object" based sound has the potential to be very cool, especially for gaming.
-
imo it's essentially pc v. mac, android v. iphone, etc. if you have a mac book and iphone I'm pretty confident you'll want a sonos setup. if you like to build your own pc and have an android phone then the home theater setup deal is probably for you.
-
that is accurate, just keeping up with the latest & greatest surround sound formats gets ridiculous. My experience is most non enthusiast folks do in wall speakers that the contractor rolls into the price of the basement finish, does Sonos have a product to work with in wall speakers?

Yes, they have the original sonos that is basically the chrome cast thing as well as the AMP that is that but powers the speakers.
-
just a Yamaha/Pioneer/Onkyo etc avr and individual speakers and subwoofers, not the crazy pre pro & amp setup of the true stereo nerd

don't know anything about apple music...
my usage pattern is basically just streaming anything off my PC to phone using Plex and airplaying that to one of my Apple TV -> receiver combos (hooked up via optical).
take phone out of pocket, set which receiver i want it to play to, pick something to play in plex. extremely convenient for me

We constantly play music everywhere but we probably wouldn't if sonos didn't make it so simple. Literally if I had to use a remote or hit a power button or something I wouldn't do it.

That's not me BSing btw. Legitimately the simplicity of it is worth it.

true the fiber boxes can be used as a standalone chromecast video/audio...but they don't pair up in the chromecast audio grouping world...and still have speakers that don't have a fiber box. Google home will hook into the chromecast audio grouping world and make the whole thing Alexa'like. Does Sonos have voice command?

In the past, I think their surround sound was set up to be the playbar, 2 play ones, and a sub. Could be wrong, but I would just check out their site.
I have a number of speakers but no sub. I've heard very good things about the sub though.

I don’t really GAF about surround sound as we don’t watch movies or anything. Just news, sports, and children’s programming and then music or news programming. We have the bar/sub in the living room and basement family room and a bunch of 5s and 1s around the house and garage and deck but none set up as surround. Work great and are the primary reason I even listen to music because of the ease of use.

For cheap old schoolers. I added Connect:Amp with a set of stereo speakers.

Bro in law has that because he already had all the built in speakers. Works great.

ordered the new version sonos amp and am having speakers installed in the roof of my deck for it. I can't lug the 5 out there every time I'm going to chill on the deck. the 5 is going to be full time garage speaker now.

Can we talk about Bose speakers ITT? I got this recently and it's pretty great.

That's pretty cheap for a Bose product. Makes me think it sucks.

It's actually really nice for a little portable speaker. I got it for playing music in my office since my laptop speakers suck ass. 4.8 out of 5 average rating from 11k+ reviews :dunno:

I thought about it for about 20 seconds before concluding that my noob ears wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between the playbar and this arc thing or probably any other decent one either
also it’s like 10 inches longer and that too big. that’s what she said

Are you insecure that it's going to make your TV look small?

the last thing I want my guests to be confronted with in the middle of my living room is a large throbbing speaker
-
What if that's exactly what your guests are craving?

Got this hot piece of veiny ass pumping beats to my deck finally. Self install. Very first speaker wire I’ve ever connected that wasn’t like a plug in one. Ignore the cord management issues I clearly have.
