Many wonder why our (sometimes) annual football game with the University of Texas is affectionately called the Chisholm Trail Rivalry. We call it a rivalry instead of a showdown or something like that both because it is more PC and also because we love to patronize UT fans. Everyone knows a rivalry happens when both teams win once in a while, and UT has struggled mightily with the Wildcats of the Flint Hills. Since I see no earlier post about this (not like this site is user friendly/searchable anyway) on the football board, let's get started.
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Chisholm Trail was a trail used in the late 19th century to drive cattle overland from ranches in Texas to Kansas railheads. The portion of the trail marked by Jesse Chisholm went from his southern trading post near the Red River, to his northern trading post near Kansas City, Kansas. Texas ranchers using the Chisholm Trail started on that route from either the Rio Grande or San Antonio, Texas, and went to the railhead of the Kansas Pacific Railway in Abilene, Kansas, where the cattle would be sold and shipped eastward.
The trail is named for Jesse Chisholm who had built several trading posts in what is now western Oklahoma before the American Civil War. He died in 1868, too soon ever to drive cattle on the trail.

To save you all some boring reads on Wikipedia and another website, www.thechisholmtrail.com, the bottom line is this:
Texans were too stupid to build railways to ship their longhorn cattle into markets where they could get more money per head, so they instead drove them all the way up to Abilene, KS, because the people there were smart enough to build railroads and ship cattle to better paying markets. Originally they had driven cattle to Missouri, but Missourians banned cattle because they are stupid, too. Ironically, the guy who built the stockyard in Abilene to house all of these cattle before shipping them to KC and St. Louis and Chicago was named McCoy.
Also, Texans being in denial about Kansas being better than them at everything actually can be traced back as recently as 1931:
In 1931, Geo. W. Saunders, then President of the Old Trail Drivers Assoc. and an authority on Texas livestock History wrote: "The famed Chisholm Trail, about which more has been written than any other Southwestern Trail, cannot be traced in Texas for the reason that it never existed in this State."
Apparently his body is at the municipal auditorium in San Antonio. This makes me very torn about going to the Cotton Bowl or Alamo Bowl. The Cotton Bowl would be great, but the Alamo would give me an excuse to saunter over to the municipal auditorium, located at 100 Auditorium Circle San Antonio,
TX 78205 210-207-8511 / 210-207-8500 / 877-504-8895 / Fax: 210-207-4263, and blame my releasing excrement on his grave and/or body on Irritable Bowel Syndrome in order to escape arrest.
To sum it all up, the "Chisholm Trail Rivalry" or CTR is more than just a cute little name, it also is a constant reminder to all Texans that they were too stupid to figure out how to ship cattle and had to take their livestock up to Kansas because Kansans actually knew how to build railroads and profit from them.

I guess, in a way, the Chisholm Trail is much like the Big 12. Texas feeds Kansas with talent and we smartly make money with it by spreading it eastwards towards Virginia. Sports is like life, just like my coach said...

eff texas but ill be damned if i want to see them leave the big 12.

America is just jumping on this rivalry like crazy. It just raced past UT v. OU and is right on the bumper of OSU v. Michigan.
When will it become the biggest rivalry in college sports? My forecasts predict sometime in late 2012, but the metrics are changing pretty rapidly.
-
CTR is like a "cult" band that's on the verge of going mainstream . . . to massive commercial success.

The (almost) annual football contest between the University of Texas Longhorns and Kansas State University Wildcats has been nicknamed the "Chisholm Trail Rivalry." This has not been much of a rivalry to date, however, as the Wildcats have dominated the series since the initiation of the Big 12 Conference, going 6-2 since 1998. Some have speculated that the annual contest may be called the Chisholm Trail Smackdown due to the lack of success for the Longhorns.

Had my first CTR Dream last night....First drive of the game, Ash drives them down the field, 1st and goal at the 8....Ash throws a 7 yard out and nigel jumps it and takes it to the house. Herbie is going off about how everyone says texas has better athletes but nobody came close to catching nigel.

Don't get how this is a rivalry yet? Two hugely recognized teams playing each other? Yes. Two huge fanbases hating each others faces? Yes. The two biggest named coaches in the country? Yes. Look, all that is fantastic and makes for high enough ratings to keep ESPN in the black, but I just don't understand how this is a rivalry if TX can't win a game?
How long until the national media Ho-Hum's this thing and ignores it as the fore gone conclusion it is?
-
McCoy will start, Ash is questionable. Okafor is questionable. Hopefully our O-line will find it's groove against a team that has lost 3 starting defensive linemen (assuming Okafor doesn't play).

Yeah, that was the point. Case McCoy looks like he should have been aborted or like they tried really hard to but it didn't take. Comparing him to Klein is a huge mongoloid slap to Collin's handsomely devout face.

Aggieville is pretty sweet. There is a Buffalo Wild Wings there that always has a great atmosphere and the radio stations are always there giving away free food and tee shirts and $#@!. Last game I went to was in 2006 when Colt got hurt and after what seemed like 8000 "GOOD FOR ANOTHER WILDCAT (cue crazy wildcat row row noise) FIRST DOWN" pa announcements, I haven't been back but the place is actually pretty cool. The stadium is $#@! and you better take some warm ass gear cuz I froze my ass off that night. Have fun.

Well this is news to me:
If i were going to this game, I would be depart on Friday and be north of Denton on i-35 before 9am in order to get to Salina for a late lunch. The target of this mission is The Land Institute in Salina. The last tour of the day is 3.30 on fridays. I learned of this shop from a Harper's article earlier this year. They have been working on cultivating a sustainable strain of pernennial wheat for more than 30 years WITHOUT genetic engineering, purely by pollen transfer. They think they are less than 25 years, maybe as few as 15 years away, from the end product.
Why is this important? All the wheat and corn grown today has to be sown every year. The damage to the soil and the petrol and machinery to do this requires massive amounts of additional chemicals with their attendant cost, and most importantly, the voracious water consumption of annual plants (replanted every year) is about to finally drain the biggest aquifer under the great plains beyond the point of it's ability to recharge.
Perennial Wheat, which The Land Institute has named Kernza, is planted once, and the same root system regenerates and flowers annually. The land does not have to be plowed and re-plowed. The harvesting expenditure plummets. Water consumption plummets.
Assuming we don't get replicators or 3-D printers than can print a loaf of bread, Wes Jackson, the founder of The Institute, will be a household name later in the millenium when his Kernza is harvested in space stations and planetary outposts across the galaxy. And you can meet him today.
If anyone wants the Harper's article and doesn't have a subscription, PM me and i can pull a .pdf for you, it's a fantastic read.
Anyone who decides to make this side trip, DO NOT wing it on the nav. The location is less than 2 miles east/southeast of downtown Salina, but read up on their website, as the paved ingress and egress options were all under renovation/repair the last time i looked.

Wow, that Texan is a great Kansan.

-
I'm not sure it happened exactly like that but whatevs.

From a shaggy thread regarding their inability to beat OU
My father lives in LA and I have brought him out for 5 or 6 TX/OU game in the past 12 years. He has seen exactly one victory (2005). He just asked me if he could come to a different game this year. Of course I said yes. He picked Kansas State. I didn't have the heart to tell him.

It's so strange. Some of their fans almost seem like they don't even care to beat us...just sort of resigned to it. Kinda like KSU fans were when we were losing to Colorado there for a while.

ESPN.COM UPDATE {front page, right?}
Chisholm Trail Rivalry upset!
by Some Bald Guy Named David Ubben That Belongs at The Wonka Factory, Or Mizzou, Or Both:
- Texas was supposed to be the best ever, but LHCBS said "HELL NAW" and the 'Cats beat the Longhorns 69-10.
The firepower of the offense was started by "Diesel" Sams, burning everyone in the stadium with his speed, and only the inferno of this mess could be put out by Jake "Making it Rain" Waters (would've been better with just Water .. damnit).
K I am done.

Quite frankly I'm surprised that they aren't leading the charge to get more teams added to the Big 12. That way the round robin is dropped and they can avoid playing the Qatz 2 out of 4 years. Their best years under Mack Brown are 04, 05, 08 and 09. They didn't play K-State once in those years. Coincidence? I think not.
-
Talked to a UT fan at length this weekend. He says he gets more pissed at OU when we beat them.

That's legitimately the worst message board I've seen since Tiger Board. The tiger board format is worse but looks significantly better.

I saw that too. They don't use great software but that board is probably my favorite football site, of any kind, to go to after goEMAW. Those guys are just hilarious.

I posted this thread on kso simply because they don't understand how important this rivalry is to us elite wildcat fans.

What software problems are you weirdos having at the surl? I post there a lot and other than a time limit on editing/deleting posts, it's all normal bbs crap.

I keep getting formatting and advertisement errors. Pages won't load correctly, or they'll take forever trying to load images, or the posts will jump around on screen as images/ads try to auto start/close.

Honestly I think we're better off with Will Klein than an even gimpier Skylar

Win the dang day. Pound the dang stone. Go Cats

ESPN says we have a 31% of winning :ksu: dumbasses!

I am not a defensive genius or anything but pretty sure they are going to run when they are in wildcat. Maybe plan for that or something.

We're in big rough ridin' trouble
maybe so, but Texas has been leading at halftime in nearly all their recent losses (except Kansas, I believe)

We look awful against the worst Texas team since the 1950's.

That was very very easy for Texas to move down the field.

-

Yes. I'm afraid that today the Joes will dominate the theoretical Xs and Os.
We absolutely can't get down two scores with Will at QB.

Not if mess insists on throwing the ball on 2/3 of the plays. BTW I think Skylar is his backup.
-
Oh look another awful start, we do that on that games we lose, save Tech

That was nice of Texas!

Ok ok ok ok

Indeed, that was a total gift. They're moving the ball really well when they do what they did in the first drive (and unfortunately, this current drive).

Hmm missed that.
-
Our defense has to be getting tired from all of their getting smashed into the ground, and their face is smashed into dirt, and their bodies pushed all the way back and smushed all pancake like
-
Run defense has been nails all year long, consider me not concerned. We'll make adjustments.
-
Although I will say it's pretty clear we didn't prepare much for the wildcat.
-
We’re getting our entire asses whipped
-
The resurgence of positive yet realistic MIR is one of my favorite additions to both the hoops and fball boards.
-
Guys, we're not going to win
-
I don’t think we did a lot of preparation for our guys getting blocked. Should have thought about that.
-
Call it no catch please
-
Hooray!
-
Texas could very well pound the ball all day but still has a few blunders up their sleeves
-
I'm just worried we can't score enough points to keep up. We need more turnovers.
-
This Texas offense is destroying us, but it seems gimmicky . . . hopefully we'll make some adjustments and it won't last

Isn’t there a rule about letting the defense make subs when the offense changes personnel? Or is does that not apply the last 20 seconds of a half? Feel like the refs should have been standing over their center as time expired..
-
So frustrating, just blew two opps with great field position. Offense is so bad I can't decide if it's play calling, execution, poor reads, receivers routes, on some of these plays
-
We're going to lose this game and it's because Messingham won't stop being a dumbass. Our D has been on the field the entire second half
-
Those two missed opportunities to start the second half might come back to haunt us. Especially as the defense is crumbling.

Will we see Skyler in the 4th quarter? :dunno:

:flush:
-
Cat's third quarter: 10 plays - 17 yards
-
you know what's nice, though? playing on the friday after thanksgiving. we should make a tradition of it.
-
Other positives, no offensive penalties or turnovers
-
Our defense is gassed. We’re mumped.
-
Cat's third quarter: 10 plays - 17 yards
Deuce had 4 touches for 30 yards
-
Wild that Texas punted tbh
-
i know the sec probably won't let texas call the shots right away, but after they've paid their dues, we should see if they want to keep playing an out-of-conference for the chisholm every friday after thanksgiving.
-
Wild that Texas punted tbh
Yeah. I don't understand that decision.

Not scared of the messfense

Someone needs to go shoot Messingham in the box before he can ruin the 4th quarter for us. Unreal how he still has a job after the disastrous 3rd quarters he's called all season.
-
Isn’t there a rule about letting the defense make subs when the offense changes personnel? Or is does that not apply the last 20 seconds of a half? Feel like the refs should have been standing over their center as time expired..
I don't believe that applies final two minutes

Yet everyone else combined to net 17 yards

If we go down, that's the way to go down

they gave us a pretty generous spot, imo. we should be thankful.
-
welp
-
I like going for it but Duece in wildcat is dumb
-
What the eff.
I'm hopeful it would have been a run if Deuce hadn't lost a shoe
They should have rough ridin' called a timeout
-
I like going for it but Duece in wildcat is dumb
They'd been getting five+ yards a pop on Deuce Wildcats
-
Please let us hold

Yeah the thought crossed my mind
-
Messingham has me fighting you level mad right now
-
With deuce we still have a punchers chance if our defense can keep them off the board the rest of the game...
-
I like going for it but Duece in wildcat is dumb
They'd been getting five+ yards a pop on Deuce Wildcats
No we haven't. The first and only other time we called that this game it went for -3.
-
Drive of the season. Let’s see what mess dials up
:ohno:
-
our defense is pretty great at preventing touchdowns, but gives up a lot of field goals.
-

That is 100% false
-
Messingham has me fighting you level mad right now
You and me both brotha. The defense gave him another chance to eff this up. We should be up at least 17 right now.

I do not understand how he has a job. It's insanity
-
I don't remember duececat doing particularly well this game but that situation I felt it was not a good call. Is William unable to lean forward?
-
we're within striking distance. have to be willing to sketti brain howard here
-
And we're losing to this bozo

I feel like there are way fewer QB sneaks called these days. Good opportunity to get your QB hurt, pretty sure that's when TCU and OSU got cheap shots on Klein in 2012

jesus rough ridin' crhistos, mess!!!! :curse: :curse: :curse: :curse: :curse: :curse: :curse: :curse: :curse: :curse: :curse: :curse: :curse:

Courtney Messingham is the dumbest [redacted] alive.
-
🤮
-
Oof
-
Ok I would've have called the DeuceCat a second time
-
Will is speed 85, acceleration 50, agility 25.
-
So rough ridin' stupid

Right cause that worked every time
Why can't we just lineup and rough ridin' push
-
i like that we keep going for it on fourth down. the change is coaching wisdom on that over the last decade or so has made football a much more entertaining game.
-
He has to be gone.
-
That was a typo I would not have ran it twice lol
-
Have we run the wildcat in any other games this year? or did Mess just see Texas run it in the first half and decide to try it out?
-
Did nobody tell Howard he is supposed to pitch the ball when the end takes him?
-
Courtney Messingham is the dumbest [redacted] alive.
He is rough ridin' trash.
-
Will is speed 85, acceleration 50, agility 25.
Break Tackle 0
-
This pushing the pile crap has to go. Why did they ever change that rule?
-
I just want a Head Coach that holds their coordinators accountable
-
That's it
-
Messingham should get fired. Otherwise what you are seeing is your team next year, and then Kleiman will be on the chopping block. Also if Will is our future QB we are mumped.
-
I just want a Head Coach that holds their coordinators accountable
Klieman has a chance to do so.
-
we are done ...another game just given away....
-
Pretty disappointing loss but whatever
-
What frightens me is that this type of season is Klieman's peak here.
-

We were underdogs!
-
eff this crap
-
Kudos to Klanderman. Special teams were great for the most part. Mess has been total garbage. Klieman has to get rid of him. He has to.
-

Did you glean that from today's game?

A competent game plan wins this game in a walk

post was about the season as a whole. but yeah, it applies to this game as well. Messingham isn't the answer. What a crock of crap he cooked up today.
-
It wouldn't have mattered but that clock operation was bonkers after the punt and first down
-
Mess let everyone down. His offensive players. The defensive players and staff. His good friend Chris Klieman. He has to be gone.
-
I just want a Head Coach that holds their coordinators accountable
This has to be it. Don't even blame mess at this point. If there isn't an announced retirement then klieman should be the focus of everyone's ire.

Yep, the ball is in Kli's court now. He has to be able to pull the trigger.
-

No
This season is appreciably worst than his first, but you already told us you'd you'd draw some larger meaning out of this game if we lost, so this take from you isn't the least bit surprising.
-

It was like that at the end of the first half too. Also the ref 100% blew his whistle with 3 seconds left
-
It's a frustrating way to end the season.
-
Mess and Klein need to go.
2 years to make a guy passable.

Stop rough ridin' blaming Klein, Jesus rough ridin' Christ. eff. It's not his or any other quarterback coach's job to make a quarterback something he isn't. If he has to play it's up to the staff to develop a game plan to play to his strengths. Thinking Klein or anyone else can turn this dude into a Big 12 starter in one goddamn spring is dumber than mess's play calling. eff all the way off.
-
It’s wild that we’re kinda good when our above average QB is not hurt and we’re absolutely shitty when he is

Will Howard isn't good enough to bail out a shitty offensive coordinator. Certainly we can double whatever UTEP is paying Dana.

I hope he klein’s them

Keep rough ridin' running. Let's hope mess doesn't get cute.
