Title: NYC
Post by: KCFDcat on September 27, 2011, 05:56:08 PM
I know there's a thread about visiting NYC on here, but I don't really care. I'm posting this anyways.

I've been to NYC lots, done all the touristy stuff (ellis island, statue of liberty, empire state building, etc..) am going back in November and want some new things to do/places to visit. any suggestions? also, need a nice hotel to stay at (stayed at the westin times square last time) anyone know of any smaller boutique type hotels that are nice/not outrageously expensive?

ps, this trip is for 2 dudes, so don't need to worry about doing things that Mrs. KCFD would like to do. (I'm not against just going out and getting smashed every night, but I don't want to just go to shitty bars, I could do that here)

Is it actually cool, or is it one of those things that would be like "oh this is neat, what do we do now? look at this grass?"

this, if you are an architect, landscape designer, or in general an artsy person it will probably be super super cool for you, otherwise walk through it, maybe take some pictures across the water and you're done, 30 minutes max, there is the chelsea market http://www.chelseamarket.com/ right by the highline which I've heard is pretty cool to walk through, but it was closed when I was there  :dubious:

I'm taking the lady for her first trip next month.

I'm reasonably familiar with the city, but not at all familiar with Broadway shows and she wants to see "The Book of Mormon."

Anyone have any suggestions on the best/cheapest way to purchase tickets? I know there are all sorts of services besides Stub Hub and the like, but nothing beyond that.

you can roll the dice and line up at tkts for a lot of shows.  TBOM is really popular right now so that won't be an option for you.

I have worn a sport coat the times I have gone.  you see people wearing everything from jeans to black tie though.  the later in the evening the show the more formal.  People have been more formal at the shows I've been to in Omaha but it's probably just because the locals don't get to do crap like that very often.

I've been meaning to say, for anyone heading to NYC without a crap ton of hotel points or those who are just looking for something a little less touristy, I can't recommend this place highly enough. It's probably the best value in Manhattan.

http://sanctuaryguestsuites.com/sanctuary-stanton/

It's run by some Hare Krishnas, but they're not in your face about it or anything. You get a ton of space, a full kitchen, a patio and a great location with all the bars and restaurants in the LES.

You should be fine. Most people would recommend not spending any time in the surrounding neighborhood (you won't be missing anything). Ride the subway to the stadium, go into the stadium. Leave the stadium, go to the subway.

I have never been to NYC, so from your past experiences, please suggest a couple of nice hotels near/on broadway and a couple of great places to eat.

Are the package deals with a hotel and a show the way to go, or are those craptity hotels? I have some points, but I don't give a crap if I use them or not. I will just pay for whatever I do if I select a hotel that I don't have points for.

Some musicals/some straight plays:

Death of a Salesman
Newsies
One Man, Two Guvnors
War Horse

I haven't seen Rock of Ages, but it hardly gets more straight, white, and male than that (and it's supposed to be good).  Also, Venus in Fur is supposed to be very good.

Book of Mormon would be my first choice, but...

P.S.  If you want to go to see the 9/11 Memorial, you need to book a couple weeks in advance (maybe even more in the summer?) to be sure you get the day you want.  Lots of folks don't know that.

P.P.S.  Times Square seems utterly unbearable to me, but I see why tourists like spending time there.

One specific recommendation: Jukebox Jackie.  It stars Little Apple native Bridget Everett.  (She was just rated the 28th-funniest person in NYC, which is not nothin' since Seinfeld was #33).  It's a musical revue featuring cross-dressing, cabaret and burlesque...

Food / bars please.....I've done already on my own the past couple times but always looking for ideas and there are TOO MANY CHOICES!!!

gramercy tavern and spotted big are my two favs. don't get reservations at the tavern. sit in the bar area. show up before the doors open at the pig or you'll be waiting a long time.

Grammercy Tavern is always good. I've only eaten at the bar.

Cosme is the very best meal I've had in NYC in a good while. And not too expensive. See if you can get a reservation.

2014 was the year of ramen in NYC. Ivan Ramen is supposed to be the best, and I'd suggest trying it at Gotham West Market, which is a food court (sort of) where you can try Ivan Ramen, Court Street Grocers, The Cannibal, and others. (Calling it a food court is a disservice -- if you look it up, you'll see that it is considered a good spot to eat.)

If you want to blow a bunch of cash on a fancy meal and love very good Japanese food (not sushi), go to Brushstroke.

I haven't had a chance to go there yet, but I feel like I can recommend Kitty's Canteen. It's described as "a jazz bar and Jewish soul-food joint that looks like a New Orleans bordello run by a religious cat lady." If you go too late, you'll need to get by a bouncer.

Haven't tried Mercato yet, but it looks nice.

Can't give you a defnitive answer michigancat, but I don't think so...

 :peek:

When we were there last year around this time we went to the Australian (where watch parties are listed)....pretty empty but saw a group in a private area in the back...thought cool, kats.  Wandered back, tried to mix in, saw buffet food ready....kept scoping out the people....nobody wearing purple...nobody greeting/friendly to us...no TVs back there....whoops, not a kstate watch party.

Slithered back to the bar and talked one of the bartenders into turning it on one of the TVs.

yes i am terrified of the subway.  I downloaded the hopstop app and even with that I still managed to miss my connection or screw something up pretty much every time I tried to get anywhere.  I'll be living in Brooklyn, (bedstuy) and working in the financial district.

Last time I was in town I tried to get from my job interview in the financial district to visit a friend of mine who works right by the chelsea piers and I backtracked so many times on the subway that I actually would have gotten there faster if i just walked.

- Professor Thom's ? delicious nachos
- Grand Central Oyster Bar (was being renovated last visit) good seafood; cool Mad Men-type atmosphere, or used to be

Heard great things about Per Se and 1 If By Land (the latter of which is supposed to be the most romantic dinner place in NYC). A very good not-too-fancy seafood place is L&W Oyster, also Fishtail by David Burke. Folks seem to love Charlie Bird, but I was handicapped again by going with a vegetarian.

yeah everyone tells me I'll be on subway autopilot soon enough and i'm looking forward to that.  I'm mostly just embarrassed because for how much that city is just a grid I can't seem to figure out my cardinal directions.  Like, if I'm coming up out of a subway station I've never been in, there is a 100% chance I don't know north from south and will have to pull up either google maps or hopstop to see which way I'm walking and chances are it's probably the wrong direction.

The same thing happens to everyone when they first take a subway they are unfamiliar with. you will figure this out in no time. I remember my first day to work in SF I took a friggin bus and had no idea which way was North. And SF is like a tiny baby city compared to NY.

A/C.  It's kind of a toss up because my apartment is closer to the Kingston/Throop station but while Nostrand is a longer walk from home its a little easier to get to work so i dunno...might just depend on if it's -7 degrees outside.

Glasserie in Greenpoint was my favorite restaurant in the city for a while, but it's hard to get to. Roberta's Pizza in Bushwick is the best pizza on earth, followed closely by Paulie Gee's pizza in Greenpoint. In south Brooklyn, Dover has a fantastic prix fixe. Five Leaves on the Greenpoint/Williamsburg border has great food, and it's by a fantastic bierhall, Spritzenhaus. However, it sounds like you might be headed to Williamsburg based on your description, so I'll tee that up for Paul Moscow.

The ticketed show was sold out before this trip was planned. I'm wondering how early you need to line up to get a ticket.

I'm about to encourage you morons to not go to rough ridin' ramen places as grown ups. Maybe you can save your pennies and go to a spaghetti w/ ragu sauce restaurant instead.

Ha! Last time I was in New York my traveling party just HAD to go to a trendy Ramen place and eff those places. This particular one ran their music off an ipad but set the ipad next to a record spinning on a turntable with no needle. eff YOU, RAMEN PLACE.

Great place to visit but I couldn’t live there. Although talking to my NY work colleagues seems like the biggest gripes are prices, taxes, tiny expensive living spaces, and weather. So only the last one would be a new problem for someone accustomed to living in the Bay Area.

You're next to the ocean. That helps to regulate the winter weather. It's easy to put on a nice coat and scarf and make your way around in the winter. Really hot days in the summer are worse. No AC in the subway stations (plus lots of other places). And the smells. The smell of garbage baking in the sun, waiting to be picked up. The smell of dog piss reducing on the sidewalks, because there is no grass. You have to walk everywhere. Lots of places just aren't equipped to deal with it.

Of course, I could just be talking out of my ass.

*edit: I also just generally prefer relatively colder weather versus 90+ degree heat.

The weather/winters in NYC aren't that bad. If anything, at least in "the city," the height of the summer is worse.

I don't know if I believe you!

Rusty, a New Yorker!?!  :horrorsurprise:

The winters aren't terribly cold, but it's wet as hell. The worst part about the NE Seaboard is that the sun disappears in mid to late October and you won't see it again until the spring. Growing up in Western Kansas going literally weeks without sunlight was hard for me. It's always cloudy in the winter and the sunset is crazy early. I thought seasonal effective disorder was bullshit until I moved to Boston. I loved Boston, I hated the crap out of November-February.

I gotta imagine where I lived in Michigan is worse for the cold months (but not nearly as hot as NYC). Michigan would be cloudy from November to May and spring was just second winter.

Yeah eastern part of any timezone is no joke with the SAD.  Living in Chicago with sunsets at 4:30 was brutal.  Used to take vitamin D when I lived up there, which i'm not sure actually helped at all but at least made me feel like i was doing something.

ngl pretty jelly you're in NYC now. Part of me still wishes I took the transfer job to move there for the delat terminal update at la guardia, but also part of me is glad I didn't. I could probably hack it in the city for 2-3 years and that's about it. But it would be a great 2-3 years.

You don't know if you can hack it until you try! I was lucky to have a company that pays an appropriate NYC wage and paid for all the moving expenses.

BTW I flew into LaGuardia on United a couple times recently and was blown away at that terminal compared to like seven or eight years ago. Felt like a real life modern airport instead of a dank crowded cave. Still took like an hour to get a cab, but it was very clean and spacious!

It really was a horrid airport, current KCI would be an improvement.

Yes and no with hacking it. I loved, absolutely loved the several days I spent there (by myself!) going to a Mets-Royals game (in 2016, so they were still a lil salty about 2015), went to see Book of Mormon (and really should've shelled out for Hamilton, the week before I went Lin Manuel announced he was done as part of the cast, so it was like the last few weeks of the original cast, and it went from like $600 to $2000, oh well), visited the Met, spent time at great restaurants, went to the Colbert Report (Bernie Sanders was a surprise guest!), ate dinner at the bar that was used as inspiration for HIMYM (without realizing it until I ducked in, I was just walking back from Central Park), and spend one very insane night barhopping. And I really enjoyed taking the subway, insane people watching, but also relatively convenient. Crazy whirlwind. There's a reason I love NYC out of many cities, but to me it kicks Chicago's, LA's, SF's, and many other's asses, I'm not going to mention the dumpster fires that are DFW and Houston the same league.

That being said, while it's a super energizing city, never ending and always something to do, but I could see well, the sort of compromises being there ends up being. It's obviously crowded, loud, and forever blanketed with a sea of humanity. It's both it's greatest asset and greatest weakness. In the end I know me, and I'd love a ton of it, but I'd also pine, absolutely pine, to GTFO after a while and be done with the madhouse. I can't imagine for example being there during the crazy days of COVID, it would've broken me. I see NYC as a ride and eventually I'd like to get off of thank you very much.

Yeah we definitely paid more than we originally intended for an apartment because we wanted somewhat of a "sanctuary" that could weather another potential lockdown (which I'm doubtful will happen, but whatever). We actually had to match a bid above the asking rent! Because New York is back, baby.

I also don't know that I could live in Manhattan, but man Brooklyn residential neighborhoods like Park Slope and Fort Greene just seem like really pleasant places to live with plenty to do but without that crush of humanity. It'll be fun to see how my attitude adjusts!

The other thing I've found: People are super nice! Yeah people honk a lot and are impatient walking places but most people we meet are easy to talk to and want to help us.

I think so.  They get some of the gulf stream still down there.  Even the CT and RI coasts have (slightly) milder winters.  Once you get up past Cape Cod though, hold on to your nuts.

I didn't live there single, but I lived there married and childless for a little bit, and it was so incredibly fun. We had a three way bang with Boston that was second to none.
Agree on Boston.  NYC’s hippie little bro. Same(ish) bang for half the bucks. Winters are miserable tho.

Facts. Are they much better in NYC?

I think so.  They get some of the gulf stream still down there.  Even the CT and RI coasts have (slightly) milder winters.  Once you get up past Cape Cod though, hold on to your nuts.

As I pay more attention to the politics here one interesting faction is the folks fighting a war against cars. I noticed a "BAN CARS - REFOREST THE STREETS" banner on an old billboard along the BQE and saw this long ass editorial:

https://twitter.com/StreetsblogNYC/status/1439726090780561417

The editorial shared a few tweets and I live for people calling a bunch of cars at an intersection "assault". It's so inflammatory and ridiculous!

Most of twitter is, and especially NYC oriented twitter.

Side note, I really though couldn't imagine owning a car in significant areas of nyc, seems far more a hassle than just taking some form of public transportation/walking/biking

for real though driving here is wild. We are keeping a car for reasons I won't get into and just went looking for a new spot because it's street cleaning day and in about 10 minutes I was honked at once and passed twice on two lane roads for not driving enough like a maniac.

It really is. I've only had one two weeks and it just sits there until street cleaning day.

I know the context, he wasn't/isn't mayor yet. If I lived NYC I definitely wouldn't have voted for Eric Adams in the primary but the unprecedented amount of scrutiny he's received is very uncomfortable for me and I question the motive. The first comment on that story summarized my thoughts of the, what's largely the NYC blogsphere, scrutinizing the dude like he's a sex offender.

We had an Airbnb where the roaches were terrible. I saw a mouse once but no rats.

At our permanent place I saw a roach but I think it came with food from our Airbnb and no rodents. We're a couple floors up and the owner lives downstairs so I imagine they would deal with rodents before they made it to us.

On the street, you see rats all the time. They seem to thrive on subway tracks. You can hear them a lot around trash cans too. And yeah some of those plywood floor outdoor dining sheds are basically giant rat nests. There's  outdoor dining across the street from me but it doesn't have a floor so doesn't make the rat problem any worse.

Reminds me of some article I read at the start of the pandemic about some group of people that get together with their terriers and other dogs to go "Ratting" in NYC.

Apparently when everything shut down it threw off the rats normal food sources/the streets were empty so it was primo rat tossing conditions.

I remember seeing tons of rats on the tracks in the subways when I was there, though in sporadic times/areas. Like not every time I went did I see rats, and not every place has them, but it was more than enough in some stations and times to be very noticeable

1. What is something that surprised you upon moving there?

2. What is something you hope your family experiences that you couldn't get other places?

3. Any favorite pieces of architecture or buildings in your neighborhood so far?

4. Have you seen any randos wearing K-State gear?

Title: Re: NYC

great questions!

1. What is something that surprised you upon moving there?

The "ordinary night out" restaurant food is usually worse. I might be picky, but I feel like something getting 4 stars on yelp in NYC would get like 3.5 or 3 in the bay area. Pizza is an exception. It might also take some time to find the right spots.

Also the NYC Marathon was Sunday and it was so much fun. The route went two blocks from my apartment and a local DJamer (who threw massive block parties during the pandemic) set up shop and there was a crowd of folks partying and cheering on the runners. Lots of them put their names on their shirts so you can cheer them on by name and you would yell out someone's name and they would hear you and smile and it made me really happy. But like the whole route people are out all day cheering on folks. I'm sure this happens in a lot of places but NYC'ers think it's pretty unique and friends of mine all over the city were saying it's their favorite NYC day.

2. What is something you hope your family experiences that you couldn't get other places?

well for starters my kids are getting into better high schools than we could ever get in California. We took advantage of NYC's ridiculously imbalanced system and one of them tested into arguably the best public school in the country and the other is in one that isn't the best in the country but is still better than the experience they had in California. They take the subway to school, go to like shitty pizza joints after school with their friends, and meet kids from all over the city. My wife has been going to a bunch of museums while her nursing license transfers. We go to lots of $10 comedy shows which are available every night. I got to see Joe Pera which was a special highlight, and he has a weekly show!

3. Any favorite pieces of architecture or buildings in your neighborhood so far?

mostly because of the name: https://www.scoutingny.com/where-old-ladies-hookers-and-the-wealthy-live/

I also have a favorite cocktail bar, pub, and craft beer bar within a five minute walk (like 1 long block).

4. Have you seen any randos wearing K-State gear?

No but I did see a KU hat/KU shirt rando yesterday. Like full KU garb in Midtown on a Tuesday. But have seen non-randos at KSU alumni watch parties! there was a pretty decent crowd for KU! People should come by if they're ever in NYC! I also got a sweet KSU starter jacket at a Brooklyn thrift store which was pretty cool.

5. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Probably still here! So far it's been great. Hardest part is no close friends yet. Haven't had a winter yet either.

It's worse here than about anywhere because i never drive to get groceries so if like you want to get a few ingredients and a bottle of wine for dinner you have to bring your groceries to the liquor store AND remember to go to the shittier grocery store because the nice grocery store doesn't have a liquor store close by

the nice one is Food Emporium and the shitty one is Key Foods. Neither one is all that great but Food Emporium is cleaner and has a seafood counter. Also neither has a butcher! I might need to venture out a little further to find one with a butcher. There is a super high-end butcher that's like a 15-20 minute walk away but not great for everyday stuff and I don't really care for pre-packaged meat.

Used to go for work every once in a while and with Mrs SF on vacation before kids. The cheap comedy clubs are so much fun. For a few bucks you sit, laugh, and hang out for an evening. So much fun. I go to the Comedy Cellar every time i'm there. They make you buy a drink or two so it is more than the smaller clubs, but its still a cheap night out and they always have great acts there. One time I was wearing my Cats hat at a bar in the Flatiron district and these dudes started talking to me. They all worked for the bowl game that is played there and told me how awesome all of the KSU people were when the Cats went there. They loved them some LHC Bill Snyder. Go Cats

Assuming they didn't test into the super smart kid schools because their dad is emaw what is the local high school they would of gone to like? Would it be walking distance or do they actual yellow school buses that pick up kids?

I don't know about MIR's situation, but most city school districts have a minimum radial distance from the school before they will provide bus service.

Exactly right pappy. In Ames it cost $200 a semester for the bus if you live less than 2 miles from the school. We live 1.8 miles away and she is in extra curriculars so the school bus isn't much of an option for us.

It's not outdoor dining in general but specifically the sheds that got constructed on the streets. They look like they make for pretty good shelter for rats. Whether they actually make the rat problem worse I'm not sure, but it's definitely a narrative:

It's a little less than 30 minutes each, and they go in opposite directions. Schools give every student a free metro card that they can use only during the week for certain hours, and some kids way out in Queens even take the LIRR. One daughter meets friends from up the line on the same train car every day, god help the poor souls dealing with the noise and smell from those kids. For reference, their school in California would have been a 20-25 minute walk.

Assuming they didn't test into the super smart kid schools because their dad is emaw what is the local high school they would of gone to like? Would it be walking distance or do they actual yellow school buses that pick up kids?

it's a total crapshoot. there actually aren't that many zoned high schools - for example in Manhattan there are no zoned high schools. Students rank their 12 favorite schools and get assigned by grades or lottery or other factors I don't fully understand. And there's also the test-in schools, which are another animal. What we did was get an Airbnb in a part of  Brooklyn with a decent zoned school to guarantee that and try for better ones. Without a zoned school the city enrollment offices looks at spots available and kind of assigns you one. One kid had a couple of choices before the test, the other only had the zoned school.

If we'd been in that zoned school, it was about a 30 minute walk from the Airbnb, but we probably would have permanently moved to another neighborhood. AFAIK public schools don't have any buses, kids just all commute on the city bus or subway.

I will add the hasidic jewish neighborhoods are kind of a wild surprise...it isn't that different from other immigrant enclaves except they all are wearing the same outfit but it's still something to see. They got in troubs during the pandemic because they kept having school at the height of the pandemic.

I watched a YouTube video of a guy being shown around whatever the large one is (like 100k person neighborhood). Pretty interesting. The huts everywhere is weird in that I didn't notice them until it was pointed out but after that you see them everywhere.

Thats creepy

Yeah, wtf.
The context was he was living in New Jersey while running for mayor. Also a mayor driving on the sidewalk to get around a traffic jam he created is pretty funny.

I was in NYC for work with a guy who lived there one time and he said we had to walk around some Hasidic street or neighborhood because they didn’t like people walking through there or something. Thought maybe he was just some bigot but maybe he was being irl?

We went on a long walk through a Hasidic neighborhood Sunday evening and it was fine. Granted we were the only gentiles for a few blocks but everyone just minded their business like we were. All the dudes are constantly talking on flip phones and it was starting to sprinkle and a bunch of them had plastic covering their hats.

Surprisingly there was a very large contingent of woo-girl Santas. Given that I'm a flaming progressive lib, my wife and I had a nice discussion on how to describe a low-cut Santa costume without appropriating rape culture. Apparently "Naughty Mrs. Claus" doesn't cut it.

No overall it's a great place to live if you can afford it. Zero regrets. I love hating on the "omg only in New York!!!" crowd though. I also hate owning a car here.

Going to NYC for spring break.  Made the mistake of letting my 15 y/o daughter pick which show to go see.  I may have to go to two shows so I can see Lion King.

yeah, NJ is the only state iirc. really weird deal. also when I was a kid one of the 3 gas stations i meade had full service and some HS kid would walk out and fill you up. we had a charge there so you didn't even have to roll down the dang window. just pull up and pull out. wild times. also I was not allowed to charge gas there once I got my own car. fascism is a terrible thing.

yeah, I think it was Oregon where they were considering changing the law a while back and the Twitters were a real hoot during that time. People were freaking out basically saying they were going to blow themselves up and catch the world on fire if they had to pump their own gas. Some made it sound like the guy pumping gas was basically a trained engineer and they couldn't possible do it themselves. It was really fun. I just kept wondering if any of those people mowed their own grass and stuff. Like, how did they get gas to their lawnmowers if they were so afraid of torching themselves?

Man, we had a busy few days. MoMA, Sept 11 Museum, Central Park, Summit observation deck, Jersey City, walked the Higjh Line, saw Dear Evan Marshall, ate a great French restaurant in SoHo, saw Hamilton’s grave at Trinity Church and Times Square. spent most of Saturday at LaGuardia before our flight was cancelled.

-Patrick Beverly and his fiance at Central Park while I was on one of those open air busses immediately after there was a thing in the recording about New Yorkers playing it cool when they see celebrities and I got really excited and pointed him out and no one else knew who he was (see photo)
-Sarah Sherman from SNL at the Fort Greene Farmer's Market (she was carrying laundry)
-My brother saw David Cross in Prospect Heights Brooklyn but I didn't recognize him (or see him) but I'm counting him because I was with my brother

I think there's some others but I can't remember them now

One of my wife’s good friends, sister is married to Tynes, the former kicker for the Chiefs, and I clogged up his out door bathroom at his home, by his pool, when they were out of town. By out of town, I mean he was in between the Giants and the Bucs at the time. I felt really bad about it until he got a payday for staph infection and won a lawsuit against the Bucs locker room for being unsanitary and the reason for his career coming to an end. Pretty sure he made more in that lawsuit than he did playing in the NFL. #Fanningbrag

cities should crack down on noise pollution, it's incredibly disruptive for everyone and degrades the quality of life.  there have been some drag races or some crap that (i assume) kids do somewhere semi-near our house in fresno and it is loudly audible for miles.  i'd support the death penalty for whoever is doing it.

assuming many of these have two stroke engines, those also put out insane (proportionately) amounts of chemical pollution that is pretty incompatible with people trying to live and breathe nearby.

in sum, it makes a lot of sense to prohibit these in cities, and i'd imagine most nyc residents support removing them.

It's pretty far down the list of problems on New York streets when it comes to pollution, noise, and general safety. Also they're already banned and this cop son of a bitch is doing a stupid photo op with a checkered flag while I see about 500 cars flooring it to run red lights in a school zone for every ATV I see.

I'm on the fence with this one. On one hand, it seems like a pretty great way to get around in a crowded city. Maybe, everyone should be issued a dirt bike and then they could ban cars in the city? On the other hand, hearing.wwwhahahahahahahahhahahahahah all day would prob drive me insane and I would want to stick something in their spokes.

But for real, did they have to crush them like this? This just seems like a waste. Send them to poor kids in KS or something.

You really only see them on nice weekend afternoons. It's usually a group of like 10 black guys in their early 20's (which might be the crux of why people get so upset about it). I might notice 2-3 groups per weekend. Also a lot of ATV's, not just dirt bikes. I guess ATV's are harder to smash with a bulldozer.

yes, this is also how I got into it. When a car is in park you can move it a couple inches!

(the cars were parked as shown and I parked between them).

my landlord also lives in the building but doesn't have a car so they let me block their driveway. MY NEIGHBORS KNOW IT'S MY SPOT AND NEED TO BE GENEROUS WITH SPACE OR PAY THE PRICE (slightly nudging their bumpers)

Why do you have a car?

because my wife said we need a car

but we do use it primarily for the activities of one kid that take us either out of town on weekends or the upper east side late on weeknights. And taking people to airports.

I would like to get rid of it after that kid graduates if we stay in NYC. I often only move it for street cleaning every week. Last week I got two parking tickets because my inspection was expired (because it just sat there for a week and I never saw the first one). Did I get a notice that my inspection was expiring? NO!

lots of talk about that ex-marine killing that guy on the subway. yesterday there was a guy yelling on the train and at a stop an MTA employee (cop) got on and asked everyone if they felt threatened and everyone was fine and just wanted to go home so the cops like "alright" and we were about to go but the guy starts arguing with the cop and the guy says he's high as a kite and he gets off the train and gets on another one across the platform where I'm sure a new car got a new adventure.

Do you ride the subway every day and if so how common are incidents like that?

A couple of years ago I was in NYC for 5 days and had two similar incidents. First one was a 45ish year old black lady ranting to no one about how blacks and whites shouldn't be having sex with each other. They can live their own life's but they can't eff.

Second one was 2 25ish year old people sitting next to each other. Girl accuses guy of touching her leg, guy freaks out and starts yelling that she hates him because he's Jewish etc etc. They are standing up at this point and after a minute of arguing some other passenger just casually stands between them blocking their view of each other, they stop arguing and everything goes back to normal.

I ride the subway to work 3-4 days a week. People are yelling like once every week or 2. There has been one time a guy shoved me pretty hard while he got off the train but that's the only physical contact I've seen. I imagine different lines and stations have varying numbers of issues

also I saw a great subway confrontation on a crowded subway in queens heading to the US Open. There was a group of like 10-15 extended family members dressed and talking like southern country club members. The train was PACKED and like 6 of them were standing in a circle talking and not really paying attention to the people around them and one of the guys just kept bumping a woman who was wedged between the guy and the wall. She asked him to watch out and he kind of said sorry but then he just kept bumping into her when he probably had space in front of him but it would close his circle. The lady got really agitated but then another lady WENT THE eff OFF on the guy about visiting and not respecting people and how he needed to apologize and these rough ridin' southerners started arguing instead of just saying sorry and moving away from the first woman. At one point the oldest one was like "he did apologize a long time ago, we do have manners where I'm from" but they still wouldn't try to move or apologize. It was a little intense and I looked over and one of the southern belles of the group was seated and was BAWLING because her boyfriend was getting yelled at and it was hilarious and then I went to the US Open and drank a million Honey Dueces and had a blast

I used to spend a good amount of time in NYC for work and never saw a good subway confrontation. The finance people I listen to podcasts of act like the subway has gotten way worse over the last decade or so. Lot of them won’t ride it. I always assumed it was just because they have naturally gotten wealthier and fancier and snobbier and not that the subway has gotten rowdier. Rusty’s stories make me think it could be actually more festive now though.

My kids take it to school every day (along with 100s of thousands of kids). Maybe it's worse but it's not THAT bad at all and lol @ a grown ass man being afraid to ride it.

Most "incidents" are someone yelling at no one.

The only other actual confrontation I remember is a guy lit up a cig at like 11am on a Tuesday and this other dude started SCREAMING at him about how he was a grown ass man and what the eff is he doing and what his mother would think of him nonstop for like 3 stops before the guy who tried to smoke gave up and got off

Granted only rode it for the week I was there, and besides the aforementioned top notch people watching, I never had any issues on the subway. The only concern I had was cause I was on it a 2am coming from queens back into Manhattan, and it was more the time and the very few and far between riders. I feel like the subway, like a lot of NYC, there "there are so many people everywhere" thing generally keeps you from being singled out in a violent confrontation, it's the more one on one and by yourself situations you need to watch out for, which given all the people, is very noticeable when you are in one.

I feel like also for the subway, for the sheer amount of people riding it, the occasional verbal accosting being the worse anyone has seen is pretty damn good.

In my experience, there's been a small amount of crazy happening for years/decades on the subway. I haven't ridden since mid-March of 2020 (left the city to get more room for toddlers during COVID), so I don't know about NOW, but it was pretty steady from the mid-90s to 2020. Like, I only ever saw someone smoking crack on a subway in the 90s, but then it probably actually got worse in terms of confrontations when it got more crowded in the 2000s. And I also saw LOTS of people going out of their way to be very nice. It's just a mix of humanity and none of it ever bothered me. I used to ride late nights and fall asleep.

I definitely agree with this:

I shall now tell my story. It happened not long ago in NYC, baby!

What was a routine subway ride took an unexpected turn when Lisa, engrossed in a book, found herself entangled in a tense encounter with Rusty, a middle-aged man who couldn't contain his frustration about parking difficulties on his block. Rusty, on his way to the U.S. Open tennis tournament, where he yearned to indulge in millions of Honey Deuces, stormed into the crowded subway car. Settling beside Lisa, his scowling face mirrored his exasperation, setting the stage for a tense confrontation.

As the tension escalated, Lisa maintained her composure, subtly shifting away from Rusty to diffuse the situation. Rusty's muttered complaints about parking issues continued, fueled by his longing for the tennis event and the delightful Honey Deuces. However, breaking the silence, Lisa surprised Rusty with an unexpected act of kindness: she closed her book and offered him a genuine smile, acknowledging his frustrations.

Caught off guard by Lisa's gesture, Rusty's scowl momentarily softened, replaced by a glimmer of curiosity beneath his hardened exterior. In a calm and understanding voice, Lisa empathetically remarked, "It seems like you're having a tough day dealing with parking issues while you're eager to enjoy the U.S. Open and those delightful Honey Deuces. Is there anything I can do to help?" Rusty hesitated, releasing a sigh that seemed to alleviate some of his pent-up annoyance. An uneasy truce settled between them as the rest of the subway ride unfolded in a cautious silence.

As Lisa reached her stop and prepared to disembark, she nodded to Rusty, carrying a sense of quiet accomplishment. This encounter served as a powerful reminder that even in the most charged moments, a simple act of kindness has the power to bridge divides, ease frustrations, and foster understanding. Whether it's within the confines of a subway car or amidst the excitement of the U.S. Open, where millions of Honey Deuces await, compassion can transcend the barriers that separate us.

I don't think there's anything definitive that exonerates her based on the video or even if her lawyer provides receipts but the way she went from being very belligerent to fake crying back to being belligerent isn't a great look for her.

FWIW I ride citibike multiple times a week and am around stations all the time and I have never seen a confrontation over a bike

I'm pretty torn on this one tbh. The video looks *not great* for her. however now she's come out with "proof" that the bike was in fact hers. How important that is, I'm not sure. She should have just gotten off the bike and gotten a different one for sure. But, I don't think there's anything inherently racist about this, and I definitely don't think she should lose her job over it.

Rusty’s stories make me think it could be actually more festive now though.

People in KCMO are afraid to ride the bus. it's very

people are soft

My kids take it to school every day (along with 100s of thousands of kids). Maybe it's worse but it's not THAT bad at all and lol @ a grown ass man being afraid to ride it.

Most "incidents" are someone yelling at no one.

The only other actual confrontation I remember is a guy lit up a cig at like 11am on a Tuesday and this other dude started SCREAMING at him about how he was a grown ass man and what the eff is he doing and what his mother would think of him nonstop for like 3 stops before the guy who tried to smoke gave up and got off

Tell me about this citi bike Karen. Did she really pay for the bike? Did someone take it from her? Should she be #Canceled?

(My entire knowledge of the incident is skimming through a news article this morning and I couldn't tell what exactly happened)

Someone spoke to one of the kids

https://twitter.com/jsmooth995/status/1661848893422727170

Their story seems plausible, basically as a member you get 45 free minutes, after that fees kick in. So the boys were riding all over the place and were docked to reset the 45 minutes and hanging out on them until they left again. Kinda bullshit that they were "reserving" them by sitting on them but not a huge deal IMO. she definitely could have just moved on.

A great song; a true song about Bloomberg's NYC.

Quote
Your mild billionaire mayor's now convinced he's a king
So the boring collect, I mean all disrespect
In the neighborhood bars I'd once dreamt I would drink

Bloomberg was definitely the best mayor in the past 30+ years.

Flooding looks pretty nuts,  I've been in chicago when the streets are completely under water downtown but once the rain stopped it cleared out pretty quick.  Assume it's the same in NYC :dunno:

Just saw this as well. I was there just last week and thankfully it only started raining the day we left. This would have been a nightmare with kids.

Is this an effective defense against flooding?

it depends.  the last time this happened, the majority of deaths were from people who lived in basement apartments.

Shouldn’t have a basement apartment if you can’t swim. Basic math here, guys.

The shelter in place was because of transportation issues, I imagine. It didn't last long and luckily her subway to get gone was running

What the eff is that? Now I'm certain he's secretly from New Jersey and not NYC.

Adams also told a buddy of mine at a donor's dinner in 2022 that he was supporting Zeldin over Hochul for governor, so he can just rot.

I still don't know exactly what is going on

The place of worship there is considered holy by two different sects of Jews who split a couple of years ago. Sect 1 claims ownership of the synagogue and restricts access to sect 2?

Sect two builds tunnels leading to underground synagogue so they can access it to pray (?)

Sect 1 finds tunnels and tries to fill them and sect 2 flips out?

I think you've got it. Although it seems like Sect 2 met in the basement already. I'm not entirely clear what the tunnel was for. This explains a bit more but also leaves me a little more confused.
