Title: SkinnyBenny's Band of Merry Misfits: Townie Master Thread
Post by: SkinnyBenny on August 22, 2011, 09:08:49 PM
Let me start this off with some very very bad news rumblings/grumblings for townies.  My sources on the inside are telling me that, very shortly, the people doing the renovations at MHS will be taking some very boring white paint and painting over the walls of C-Hall.  The psychedelic odyssey's days are numbered.

 :shakesfist: and .

Also as a disclaimer let me say that 'clams and steve dave and all other haters can just go suck an egg with their "I'm too good for townie posts" posts, because this thread is probably gonna be like 5000 pages long and will probably always be at the top.  So eat that.  It will be full of things like good MHK memories, MHK did-you-knows, grumblings about MHK-related things (that aren't related to the airport because that has its own thread), working at Alorica for four weeks and quitting before you have to go out on the floor, etc.

Sorry we have sweet things to talk about and aren't all from crappy places like Sabetha or Medicine Lodge or whatever.   :dubious:

Edit: They have a tennis shed now! (sorry if old news)

I still remember growing up with my dad as the music professor at K-State and playing center for the Indians before going to wrestle in the hillbilly mountains and finally moving back to KC to teach kindergarten close enough to tailgate at home games.

God, what a life you must have.

Okay, now some pictures.  Guys what I'm hearing is that construction is going well.  Personally I hate it because I fear change.  My source sent me a bunch of photos that he/she took on his/her cell phone.

(https://goemaw.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi147.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fr312%2FshaggsCD%2FPicture3-1.png&hash=b651d2a3ca61806feb7512c249d0a476cacc9393)
^The new entrance to MHS.  This is a balcony that overlooks where you used to walk in the front and walk up the stairs toward the office.  Also, the designers are clearly saying eff those guys who want us to change the mascot.  (We can debate this vehemently somewhere around page 18.)

(https://goemaw.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi147.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fr312%2FshaggsCD%2FPicture4.png&hash=8b9a43af7ddc97fbf69366ec33537c6029c98d82)
^The view from above the re-worked front drive. "From the ledge, you can see KS hill!" says my source.

(https://goemaw.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi147.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fr312%2FshaggsCD%2FPicture5.png&hash=6ed3f4e3e081022771a643bfe43c2c74d17e119e)
^Inside the new band room.  That's gonna provide the Big Blue with some good acoustics!

(https://goemaw.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi147.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fr312%2FshaggsCD%2FPicture6-1.png&hash=930e0696e71784db6b7ff23db47560986b75e782)
^The view from the middle level walkway between the two new additions.

(https://goemaw.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi147.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fr312%2FshaggsCD%2FPicture7-6.png&hash=dc1ad69b98d5400aceb3be6ed4e06cf00bc0c3bc)
^E-hall, which now might as well be called the ETERNAL HALL, according to my source.  They're going to connect the old hall and extend it north all the way to where F-Hall used to be.  When both spaces are combined it will be 660 feet long.

(https://goemaw.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi147.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fr312%2FshaggsCD%2FPicture8-2.png&hash=00874f783093bb234d9d6d4608d664bd2c40e70e)
^Taken from under the ENORMOUS Indian head in the first photo looking back toward the east.  The first pic was taken from that upper walk way.

(https://goemaw.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi147.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fr312%2FshaggsCD%2FPicture9-2.png&hash=30957d3b53d96b3a3dd6f1e77374db5b143e7c9a)
^The new anatomy lab...cemetery out the window to the north.

Not gonna lie, feels good to have this MHS construction exclusive right here on goEMAW.  Scooping GPC (and of course ksf, lol) again.  Feels good.  Drink it in gang.  Because we got a keg and we're going out to The Rocks.

Good call.  I think some kid in my bro's class died of autoerotic asphyxiation or something, but I doubt that was gang-related.   :dunno:

Choices for mascots:

Lee Longhorns
Woodrow Wilson....Wombats?
Theodore Roosevelt Teddy Bears
Marlatt Mustangs
Amanda Arnold Pandas
Eugene Field Unicorns
Ogden......Pat's Pawn & Guns?
Bergman Dolphins
Eugene Field Unicorns (so lolworthy I had to put it twice)
Northview North Stars
Catholic School Weirdos
Flint Hills Christian School Double Weirdos

Any others I'm missing?

Was in town in the 60's.  Hippie.  Did a ton of LSD.  Moved away.  Reappeared many years later with mental problems.  I heard more about him, but that's all I can remember.

But remember that kid (true) insomniac who was constantly walking around, listening to his walkman.  Skinny, brown hair.  I talked to him several times because he would go into the bars at night to chat with people.

Remember Varsity Gold Cards?  Holy crap those things were  .  Mentioned this in another thread but the BOGO chalupas enabled me to eat 202 chalupas in a calendar year.

Baja.

No lettuce or fiesta salsa.

Here is your $1.59.  Thank you for these two chalupas for the price of one.

 :driving:

Oh and did Butch ever get new TVs for the film room or whatever they were raising money for?  Also, LOL that MHS' new head coach has the last name Schartz.  Joe Schartz.

How much do you guys love/hate the Manhattan Free Press?  It's a rough ridin' nightmare.  I mean, I like sitting around the Shop Kwik near Alco and reading it/drinking coffee with my grizzled old buddies as much as the next guy, but wow, just wow.  It's so bad.  The pictures are hilariously awful and I can usually find a typo in a headline within about ten seconds, which is really good.  Anybody else worried that out-of-towners stop at our Dairy Queen for a brazier and see the Free Press, then think it's our real newspaper?  I kind of think that's the leading cause of our small-time perception.

Thanks for keeping us out of the SEC, Manhattan Free Press.   :dubious:

Updates on things:

Toured the new MHS construction and it is by far the most elite facility in the state.  I haven't been to every single 6A high school in Kansas but after seeing MHS 2.0 I can absolutely guarantee it.  Just crazy.  Astonishing.  Wow, just wow.

"Marvin from Mars"  was the bald guy.
"Aggieville Bill"  was the skinny guy with the headphones.  All he listened to was train sounds.
Any one remember "Blind Bob" or the "Cat Lady"?

Also,  I pooped in the entryway under C Hall.

Go Mustangs!
The bald guy in the red hoody was Russ. He like Diet Shasta. Also, said he used to word at NORAD and would sporadically go missing for weeks at a time.

The Man from Mars was the creep who'd buy pizzas for girls to show him their stuff at City Pool. Also rode his bike all over town in the middle of the street.

I'd heard Blind Bob took a header off of the top steps at Mae's one time.

all of the above is true. also, i know a guy that was there when bobby went over the top of the stairs. bob was bleeding out of his ear and the guy thought bob was dead. bobby then had to go to the hospital to get an mri and pulled out a cig and lit it while the test was going, causing alarms to go off.

bob was downstairs smoking and drinking scotch and sodas w/ hadley all day. he then got up to leave. he made it all the way up the stairs on his own and disappeared. he was forgotten about until about five minutes later when a basically lifeless body appeared out of nowhere as it fell horizontally from the floor above and thudded on the basement floor below. the guy bartending was talking to people at that corner of the bar at the time so he saw everything. he thought bob was dead. they called 911. bob didn't move for a long time. ambulance came and a good amount of blood on the floor. bob back down at maes later that night.

D-Hall was so dumb. I think I walked down that hall, like, one time.  Question for older Ihndsz: did the occasional "heat day" make it worth sitting there without air conditioning the rest of the time? I would think no. But then again a heat day would also be totally awesome. I just imagine school dismissing at lunch and then it's just a water balloon free-for-all in the parking lot while Elvis cruises around in his Geo Tracker with the huge antennae yelling at everyone (prompting them to yell back, "Hey Elvis, go use this free afternoon to accumulate some overtime at Little Caesar's, lmao!").

How does having a mail-order bride make someone a bad person?

Testy Westy?  More like TwistyWisty imo. Twisting around what I said so it's something different.

There used to be a store (short-lived, I think) in Aggieville, probably around the early to mid 90s. It was on the block with Pyramid and Hunam's. It was kind of a junk store, I think, but I'll never forget that it had boxes and boxes of old, used pornos. Some Playboy, some of those weird storybook Penthouse Forum knock-off porns. Very scarring for a young SB. What was that place?

Hey Manhattanites.  What was the story with that old bald homeless dude who always walked around the mall and near the library?  He wore a red hoodie and walked with a limp.  He still around?

Was in town in the 60's.  Hippie.  Did a ton of LSD.  Moved away.  Reappeared many years later with mental problems.  I heard more about him, but that's all I can remember.

But remember that kid (true) insomniac who was constantly walking around, listening to his walkman.  Skinny, brown hair.  I talked to him several times because he would go into the bars at night to chat with people.

billy

first time going through this thread. did Billy always have his jeans hiked up to the mid chest region?  because there is now a man in my hometown that matches this description perfectly ie. headphones, beer, skinny

Went for a walkski in Anneberg Park (not "Annenberg," lol) and there's a bridge over Wildcat Creek now into some big ol' new residential area that I didn't even realize I was there. Great news for our exploding city, looks like lots of stud newer houses. Didn't think to check closely enough, though: was it built over the old MHS'r party spot known as Wildcat? Inquiring minds want to know.

8 days in MHK was so good. So good, you guys. Did so many old-timey MHK things but sprinkled in some new, too. Can't wait to come back.

Was waiting for you to respond. I would say she's probably about...65? I know she's nearing retirement age, but that could mean a few things. I've heard grumblings about a potential replacement for her at the boys' tennis position when she finally does call it a career. :peek:

Went for a walkski in Anneberg Park (not "Annenberg," lol) and there's a bridge over Wildcat Creek now into some big ol' new residential area that I didn't even realize I was there. Great news for our exploding city, looks like lots of stud newer houses. Didn't think to check closely enough, though: was it built over the old MHS'r party spot known as Wildcat? Inquiring minds want to know.

8 days in MHK was so good. So good, you guys. Did so many old-timey MHK things but sprinkled in some new, too. Can't wait to come back.

A super stud EMAW couple lives over there. SK sis and SK bro-in-law! :D

You guys remember a few years ago when an early thirties MHS English teacher was caught banging her 16 year-old student in his car at the lake? And she had the hilariously appropriate last name Harder and he had an awesomely appropriate last name too, which only ITK townie studs knew because he was a minor and news outlets didn't print it? Well he's not a minor anymore. And he's back in the news. Apparently he moved to Florida.  (http://www.starfl.com/news/local-news/prime-suspect-in-custody-in-cape-san-blas-murder-1.321388?tc=cr)

Prime suspect in custody in Cape San Blas murder

The son of a woman found dead in her Cape San Blas is in custody as a potential suspect in her murder.

Jarrod Powell Slick, 23, is in custody in prior arson charges, but has not been charged with the murder.

The Gulf County Sheriff’s Office revealed new details in the murder that occurred Sunday afternoon.

After receiving a 9-1-1 phone call at 1:45 p.m. ET, deputies found victim Renee Coffey, 52, of 7525 Cape San Blas Road unresponsive in her home.

By the time first responders arrived on scene Coffey had expired from undisclosed injuries.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement’s unit from Pensacola was dispatched and processed the crime scene.

The 9-1-1 call was placed by Coffey’s son, Jarrod Powell Slick, 23, of Port St. Joe, who was charged with two counts of arson and two counts of burglary in the burning of a Port St. Joe Masonic Lodge in December 2012.

Slick was out on bond, which had been paid for by Coffey.

Slick has not yet been prosecuted for the arson, but Slick already faces up to 30 years in prison and a fine of up to $40,000 if convicted.

Gulf County Sheriff Mike Harrison said that Slick was questioned at the scene and then taken to the Sheriff’s Office where he was arrested shortly thereafter.

“This was an isolated incident and there is no public threat,” said Harrison. “We believe we have our prime suspect detained.”

Coffey has another son who lives at the residence, but he wasn’t home at the time of the incident. Coffey’s husband is currently deployed in Iraq, but has been notified and will soon be traveling back to Gulf County.

“It could happen anywhere,” said Harrison of the incident. “It just happened to happen at a very visible spot in this county.”

Recently found out I am pretty closely related to the people that started Bocker's or whatever it used to be called way back in the day. And that the family also built and sold most of the houses on either Humbolt or Leavenworth street east of the park.

My Grandma (deceased) grew up in one of the houses. Apparently when she was attending K-State her fiance at the time got ran over at a grocery store on the corner of 16th and Fairchild. There is an old store building there now, but I don't know if the spot where he was actually run over was there or somewhere else.

I've often wondered about the little store-front looking buildings on the east side of town. When and how long they were in business, etc.

I like old timey stuff.

Modified  :surprised: meant 1601 Laramie, and that is on the list.

I bet the Stewart guy who owned the grocery store at 614 Kearney was super pissed when ol' Millard Moore packed up and moved from the Wareham building to 924 Kearney, and encroached on his territory.

I've been watching quite a bit of The Wire. I wonder if the old grocery dudes, got embattled in bitter turf wars over valuable grocery real estate?

Hey dorks, maybe you should go to 5th floor Hale, University Archives, and ask for the Manhattan Downtown vertical file from each decade. Then you can truly educate yourselves on every goddamn donut shop and bodega dtmhk ever saw.

My Kansas History teacher in high school described Swannies as having "the best doughnuts in Kansas".  It was even a test question if I remember correctly.

Also just as an FYI, if you knew Coach Steve Clark back in the day (now he's in Wichita, I think), his kid played for Oregon when they were in the 2011 championship. Also Clark was recently racially profiled in Wichita.

Came across a Blue M yearbook earlier this week. Items of interest:

1. I realized that I had Booyah!'s dad for geometry. He was sort of a pseudo intellectual just like Booyah! One day, I was just sitting at my desk, listening to the lecture and he walks by, taps the book on my desk and says, "Closed book, closed mind, eh?" I was furious. I went like half of the year without missing a single point on an assignment or exam. That rough ridin' bad person.

2. sys has quite a gorgeous head of hair in his senior picture.

She married a baseball player there who signed a big MLB contract and then didn't pan out. Something like that. Again, this is really sys territory and you'll have to ask him about it.

First class of ap history my teacher sees I'm not taking notes and informs me that she's never had a student pass the class without taking notes and I'm just like whatever. End of the year comes and I haven't taken a single note all year and got the best grade in the class and she apologized that she was wrong (kinda weird apology, more like an acknowledgement).

She's the only teacher I went back to see after high school though, I liked her a lot.

I was never a note taker either. It's hard to focus on the lecture if you're concentrating on writing, imo.

i live on scenic drive a half-mile south of anderson. they didn't take anything except some change, i had $1000 worth of job-related stuff in the back seat that they rummaged through but left alone.

i called the property manager and the cops. they said they've had a rash of car and home burglaries where nothing is stolen except change and the occasional pair of sunglasses.

I guess it's tradition for the football team to do birthday beatdowns and this year one got more than out of hand with a broken nose or something. I think the question is how much did schartz know and condone these and did he cover anything up on the bad one. the superintendent interviewed him and then made a recommendation to the district in regards to his future and I guess the school district will then have to vote. tons of we support coach townie signup petitions circulating on facebook.

Wtf is a birthday beatdown?

I mean I guess when it's your birthday, the kids on the football team all know it and they give you a good razzing. wedgies, spanking, the whole nine. when I was at mhs, one of the coaches actually took chewing tobacco out of his own mouth and stuffed it into my friends mouth on his 18th somewhere before, after or during him being held down and spanked. schartz seems like a really good dude but I don't know the full story so I'm not in a position to comment. also, a very sober joe schartz once drove a very inebriated rick daris home once so there's that as well.

i will add that my chewing tobacco story happened when schartz was also probably a high school student somewhere as well, so he had nothing to do with it and that I've been around him more than a few times and he really does seem like the type of guy that you would want coaching your kid. hopefully he didn't lie about a bunch of stuff or try to cover things up or whatever.

I have coached against Schartz regularly and he is a very good coach. His teams are disciplined and play hard. From what I know, he seems like a good guy. This incident seems pretty unfortunate. I also know as a coach you can't know about this type of stuff and let it go on. Eventually the wrong kid will be involved and if something goes down it will fall on you. It sounds to me like the school board spent significant time talking to their lawyers and realized at this point they don't have a case for termination, but this is far from over. There is still stuff going down with the legal system and they will let that run its course. I feel bad for the guy because I think he does well for the kids and the town, but if the serious charges come through, the district and school board will have to have a fall guy.

also I don't think this is really over yet.. http://1350kman.com/school-board-takes-no-action-on-schartz-relinquishes-decision-to-superintendent/

It looks like the Superintendent and the board are playing a game of hot potato.

Quote
“The USD 383 Board of Education has a strong policy against hazing — hazing is a crime,” school board president Darrel Edie read in a prepared statement following an extended executive session with fellow board members, superintendent Marvin Wade and a phone conference with an attorney from the Kansas Association of School Boards. “The board also has policies concerning the supervision of students. Given the situation is under review of the county attorney and given the serious nature of the allegations and given a student was injured, it is premature for the board to take action.

“In the interim, the board directs the superintendent to insure the safety of all students in our educational and extracurricular programs. The mission of the USD 383 Board of Education is creating a safe and positive learning environment.”

Wade followed.

“At this time Joe Schartz remains employed in his current capacities in the district,” he said.

If I'm in Coach Schartz's shoes, I probably don't feel really good about the comments from the Board of Ed guy.

"Hey, we're not going to decide anything tonight. But what allegedly happened is a crime and we're challenging the superintendent to make sure our kids are supervised and safe. Have a Merry Christmas Coach."

Now that the police investigating is complete, the case will be submitted to the County Attorney’s Office for a determination on charges. In addition to the original battery offense, a supplemental report has been completed for endangering a child and contribute to a child’s misconduct. Police released no additional details.

The additional possible charges don't look good.

I've told this here before I think, but here's another quick Albright story....

we're walking back into the gym from the football fields behind them. I think I'm a sophomore. anyway, Albright says something like "I ain't got no _______". I respond with "well now we know why you're  a PE teacher". he keeps walking and looking straight ahead for about four more steps and then turns super quick, grabs me, picks me up in the air by my neck, slams me down on the grass and then repeatedly starts banging my head against the ground. good times.

fast forward a year or two. the scene is the south gym around where the weight room and wrestling room used to be. we just finished up a weightlifting class. a friend of mine sneaks up behind Albright and throws a wet towel on his back. Albright turns and sees me and a couple of other people and starts heading straight towards me. I'm like "it wasn't me, it's wasn't me, it wasn't". neck grab, up in air, head repeatedly against the south gym floor.

Pretty hilarious that I guessed it was Trujillo that said that before you even mentioned stealing computers. I remember in high school he used to clown on one of our wide receivers in front of the team because "the rumor is your girlfriend's got nipples the size of dinner plates." (Trujillo didn't pull that out of thin air, that was actually the rumor.) wtf??? What weirdo adult says that to a 15 year-old about another 15 year-old? if as an adult, you ever come to learn about nip size rumors of 15 year olds, you're doing something incredibly wrong in life

I mean, he definitely was like repeating a rumor around school publicly in front of the team to....razz the guy, I guess?

I'll wait until known MHS stud Dugout Dickstone weighs in but I still feel like this is way overblown.

Yeah, sounds like it.  I had weights with Albright, dude added like 30lbs to my max.  Thanks BA

Yeah. It was an elite summer camp for sure. Swim at the nat everyday, recess at Ahearn, lunch at the Union, and "classes" interspersed throughout the day. Whoever came up with that program was brilliant. I believe it got cut because of lack of interest which is astounding.

Remember a little over ten years ago when it was frequently stated that we should go back to playing ball there?

We really mumped up by not passing the bond issue to build the indoor facility fifteen years ago. Pretty sure the Nat should have been replaced 20+ years ago.
