they'll be a bunch of people coming back w/in the next six months. they'll stay in the us for a while and then get shipped off to afghanistan.

Training, stability/ensuring gains, etc. With the elections coming up, you'll see a lot more about this. If the elections go well, you can expect to see some draw downs pretty soon, but it's gonna get real violent real fast around the voting. But even now there's rumblings among some advisors that the US may need to keep a permanent garrison there. Can you imagine what a political shitstorm that would be?
