Thinking about ditching the BGE for a Traeger. Does anyone here use one?
-
I'm sure Wyatt could answer some questions about it
-
i need more cooking space. my days dealing with an 18.5 inch cooking surface are coming to an end.

Bigger Big Green Egg?
Have you ever read about these?
http://www.thegood-one.com/
Made in KS I think, supposedly pretty good cookers.
-
parents have one. seems very easy to use. have always enjoyed eating stuff on it but they don't do any serious bbq'ing
-
My aunt and uncle have one and do nothing but rave about it. Everything I've had that was smoked on it has been fantastic. Trout, chicken, turkey, brisket, chicken wings :lick: etc. Definitely great smokers if you feel like parting with a sizable amount of your meatgoatmoney. I would kill to have one of the commercial type trailer smokers.

HOLY crap!
Have several very close friends that have them Clams....dudes who you would have a LOT in common with. A LOT.
One that lives down the road from me has the Lil Tex Elite, and another guy in Shawnee has the Junior. The guy with the Lil' Tex Elite fully admits that the Junior would be perfect in 95% of the situations. However, all of them agree that the auto thermostat is a MUST upgrade, regardless of which one you choose.
Apparently, the sales guy in Louisburg has the best prices on pellets and is a "horse trader" on the grills....even has used ones from time to time.
-
Yeah, you can actually trade used ones in towards the purchase of a new (and likely larger) grill at certain dealers. I would imagine you get butt raped on the trade in value but it's still kinda cool.
-
The good one is the best I've seen.

Ya, that also creates pretty good oppys to buy used ones.
-
this is the one i'm considering.

-
How do the prices compare at Cabelas vs a dealer? Or was that just for the pic?
-
cabelas is a dealer.
-
I've got a traegar, my only complaint is that it doesn't get really hot, for grilling steaks, etc. But it's super easy, set it, leave it alone all day for smoking, haven't had anything on it that didn't taste good. :dunno:
-
know someone that has a very large komodo smoker and hated it just fyi, also congrats on the engagement buck-0
-
Love mine. Smoked a pork tenderloin yesterday was delicious. Meat goat is fantastic out of a Traeger also.
-
Green Mountain Grills is kinda like a generic version of the Traeger. Does a really good job for a little less money, but hey, we are :kstategrad:
-
I've got a Traeger Jr. that I haul around to comps just to do my chicken...I hate it. It's a POS and always breaking down. It has the digi-control and in the year I've had it, the auger went out, the fan went out and now it's just Farked. I'd venture to say if you're cookin on an Egg, you will hate it too. It takes the skill out of the art of BBQ.
Save your :kstategrad: for some wagyu briskets and built/get a UDS or two. Best damm smoker you can cook with... As easy to control temps as an Egg and twice the capacity.
I use 2 of them at comps (along with Jr. for the chicken thighs...when he's working) and have 3 first place calls and 5 top tens out of 5 KCBS comps I've been to
-
that's the thing, the build quality seems like a piece of crap. thin metal parts, etc.
i've been cooking wagyu since last spring, had a lot of luck with them. i don't do it everytime but once in a while i cook w/ them. i get mine at paradise meats in tremble, mo (north of smithville). they're expensive and it's a haul up there. the ones i've cooked don't make burnt ends b/c the point is weird. mcgonigles sells choice grade brisket which cooks similar to wagyu at less cost. they cook fast which i like and i get to make the burnt ends.
-
C thelams,i would spend the money on a good one

That's why I've always kind of wanted a Traeger, but never pulled the trigger. Too easy.

Not really. The egg you don't just turn a dial to a number and walk away.

i want to give a shout out to larry the literal who is in the house with us tonight.

I've cooked on a Good-One...they are nice, but over priced. Chris is a hell of a guy though. Use his lump all the time.
If you are going the pellet pooper and want the best, go with a Fast Eddy...that will give you plenty of space.
Yeah, burnt ends off a Wagyu isn't a good idea...too much delicious fat. I usually buy cases at a time from Sam's (Certified Angus). Piss...have you been to RD? Haven't been there myself, but heard it is pretty nice.

Know a couple of guys who compete a lot. They swear by RD.

RD?
i need to just stick with the egg but the cooking surface just makes it so much more work for big parties like i had this past weekend. that's when i decided to start looking around.

Restaurant Depot.
Seriously, if you are looking for rack space and don't want to pinch the wallet, check into a UDS. I've built over 20 of them and do a variety of options on them... KC Can Crew had a couple of them for sale at The KC BBQ Store, but wanted $650 for them... With limited skills, you can build one for ~$100. I sell mine for $300 with two 22 1/2" racks, a new Weber lid and a premium thermometer. Plus, it is a great coversation piece. Other than an Egg, you won't find a smoker that holds temps better in any kind of weather and uses less fuel.

Restaurant Depot. Down in the bottoms area around Gennessee, iirc. It's like Sams or Cosco for the restaurant industry. Sells everything from food to equipt. The guys I know that compete both say the meat quality is pretty good and less expensive than they get elsewhere. You have to have a biz of some sort to get a membership, at least that is what I have been told. Doesn't matter what kind of biz though.

Any discount for businesses on the Forbes list of America's Most Promising Companies?

oh Restaurant Depot. no i haven't been but was just talking about that with a friend of mine who owns a restaurant/bar on the plaza. he said i can use his reference to go if i want to check it out and buy stuff.
i've heard the quality is everything from crap to really good, it's just up to you to determine how much you want to spend.
thanks for the recommendo on the uds, i'll start reading.
-
If you're going to a restaurant supply store you should also pick up some cast iron stuff, a wok, and some sheet pans.
-
How do you got about not looking like a hobo when cooking in a 55 gallon drum?
-
already have that stuff. two things i want from RD, food and a copper mug.
-

as long as I'm walkin and they're left gawkin when they're handing out the awards...I don't give a cac about what other people think when it comes to my drums...

Boom! Hobo, outed!

Dear Pissclams,
I was reading earlier in this thread where you were having a problem with cooking area on your BGE. It also sounds like you really like cooking on the BGE. It is my expert opinion that you purchase no less than two (two) more BGEs. You would have at least three times the fun and at least three times the cooking space. It would also be a great way to entertain guests as they wonder what in the world (I can just hear your guests now, "WHAT IN THE WORLD!!") you are doing with at least three BGEs.
Kitten_Mittons
P.S.
In case you didn't trust my math earlier in this post, I have attached the equation that I used.
3 x Fun = 3 times the fun

:shakesfist:
that ok...any que connoisseur knows that it doesn't matter what you cook on...it's the results you get in the end...

My Pops has a Traeger and loves it. I think it's decent but not my style.
-
Since I can't find the BGE thread, I'll just hijack this one. How hot do the sides get, if at all? Curious about using on a wooden deck, with a grill mat obviously.

They can get hot to the touch, but wouldn't worry about burning you house down or anything.

Cool. I wouldn't let it actually rest against the side railings of the deck, but I would like to kind of push it into the corner a bit and not worry about it.
-
ya i wouldn't worry about it. obviously you'll want to get a stand for it but don't worry about the sides as long as it has a little bit of room on each side.

Traeger auger has quit. It tries to turn, but act like it is stuck.
Anyone ever took one of these things apart?

think you can empty the hopper and try to hand turn the auger to clear it out?

Tried that. Ran a clothes hanger up the auger rube as well.
Afraid to crank real hard on it.

about 5 years ago had an issue with mine, called their customer support and they were pretty helpful, might not hurt assuming they are still working

Got it apart. Auger has build up
caked on pellets maybe. Auger runs fine pulled apart.
