I envision this area to be similar to what Aggieville could be if Manhattan were not run by tucks. Confirm?

It's pretty hipstery.  It's right next door to the new college world series stadium downtown.

Quote
In those eight years, Jason and Robb grew up and learned how to be businessmen, how to work with a bank and real estate developers. They borrowed several million dollars and built this new complex.

Opening the Slowdown and Film Streams, creating this community of artists, caught the attention of local developers. They spent hundreds of millions in the neighborhood—creating live/work spaces, cool offices in reclaimed warehouses, a bunch of nice new restaurants.

One developer said that those three friends—Jason, Robb, and Rachel Jacobson, who created the theater and club — have brought at least $100 million in value to the city. Jason assures me they didn't get any of it. They're all still broke.

Just goes to show you....No one ever got rich off trying to improve their FICO score.  Chalk another one up to Ramsey.

Making my first ever trip to this fine city this weekend for the CWS. The only thing I know about Omaha is what Adam Duritz sings about.

Where should we eat afterwards?

where are you staying?  what is the group dynamic?  If you want someplace near the stadium go here:

http://www.upstreambrewing.com/

It is in this area:

http://www.oldmarket.com/index.asp

Will be an absolute zoo during the CWS.  Should be fun.  The Old Market area is the kind of area that KC needs but lacks.

If you are using a GPS or something make sure it gives you the downtown location and not the west O location or you will be making a 20 minute drive to steve dave's hood

Downtown location is:
514 South 11th Street
Omaha, NE 68102

You could walk there from the stadium but it's about a mile.  You could probably park somewhere in the Old Market and walk to the game and then walk back to the restraunt (is what I'd do).

Thing I always remember about Omaha is that it's basically just famous for being where the rich guy (Bill Gates) lives.  But then dude lost everyone's money, went to jail and his kid ended up killing himself.

ETP update:

Left KC around 6:30 and arrived in Omaha about 10:00. Took 75 from Topeka all the way up to Omaha. ETP, ETPwife and ETPin-laws waited in line for GA with a bunch of elite UVA and UNC fans. We were discussing the finer things in life when a bunch of smelly Nebraska fans asked us how our football programs were doing

Nice place, but everywhere I went there were Husker fans seeking validation for the city. Also, took your advice SD and went to Upstream. I had the IPA and Lager, both were excellent.

oh man, nu fans were worse than usual this year.  really getting into to cheering against TX.  we went down to the beer garden at the slowdown saturday but didn't have tickets.  just watched the games on tv and talked to fans.  when the Don't Mess With Texas / Matthew Mc. commercial came on for the TX Network they all got very angry and hilarious.  set of brothers from CT/NY that were about 75 years old sat by us and talked shop between games.  the older of the two had the scorebook and was scoring the games like you know someone that age and that into baseball would do.  very adorable.  also went to Blanc Burger in Omaha for the first time saturday.  Very impressive beer list.  going back next saturday after we golf.

i've been to #26 and thought it was very tasty pizza. maybe a bit too touristy for a townie, but i'm not a good judge of that.

I've randomly eaten slices of #6, #13, #25, #44, and #77 in the past month-and-a-half, and I've got a reservation for #16 this week.   :gocho:
which of these was your fav. and which would you most recommend to a very white mid-westerner?

i've been to #26 and thought it was very tasty pizza. maybe a bit too touristy for a townie, but i'm not a good judge of that.

The best pizza I've ever had was at Roberta's (#6) but that part of Bushwick still feels super sketchy at night.  You won't see any tourists at that place.  It's the kind of place where a waitress can work her last shift fully naked and nobody says anything -- which recently happened.  Paulie Gee's (#13) is two blocks from my apartment -- next time you come I'll make sure we meet up and go there!  Paulie Gee is a great guy.  The artichoke pizza (#44) seems like mostly a gimmick to me, but lots of folks swear by it.  (I most recently tried a bite drunkenly last Saturday night.)

Grimaldi's is very good and so is Lombardi's (#43), and both are good representations of classic New York Style Pizza (TM) -- both are a bit touristy, but townies also still go there because they are tasty!

I've been to Grimaldi's! It was great! Asians right next to me were taking pictures of each other holding their silverware and posing with their beers and pizza, just being the most stereotypical Asian I've ever seen! Like, just as bad as Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Good 'za tho.

We stayed in the Magnolia Hotel, which was really charming, and there were some restaurants that were so tasty. I would put the Boiler Room up against any restaurant in New York.

Will be up in West O this weekend. Is the Legacy Upstream still the top suggesto?

http://www.thedailymeal.com/101-best-pizzas-america-2013-slideshow (http://www.thedailymeal.com/101-best-pizzas-america-2013-slideshow)

I just saw this... I've only had #92, #78, #51, which is somewhat depressing.  After looking at all of those, it is basically guaranteed that I get #92 for lunch today.

It's good. Tanduri Fusion is good Indian food. Dantes is great pizza/italian. Baby Blue is good sushi. There is not good BBQ/Mexican food in that area. There's good Mexican at Stokes on Dodge St though. I don't know where you will be at.

Noted items from the NYC of the plains

* Downtown streets are way too many lanes and too many one ways.  Fix immeidatley.
* Parking management is excellent and KCMO could learn a lot of lessons.  Outsource it and it gets a lot better
* M's Pub was great.  Plank was great.  Upstream beers weren't as good as I was hoping.  Walked over to Schucks but their patio was closed so no dining there
* Mask wearing was way higher than expected.
*  :driving: areas of Omaha to take in the neighborhoods.  Drove to the zoo but way too hot and way too long of lines to get in to even consider going

Side trip to Lincoln.  Never been there.  The Nebraska state capitol is sexy af!  Did the strategic air commend museum on the way. It's fine.  Lot of old planes but neat to walk by some of the big boys like the B52.

SD, tell me more about these subdivisions west of town that are all built around mini man made lakes surrounded by farmland.

I've seen them in FL/CA/Areas where it is nice but never expected to see so many outside of Omaha.

Those are former sandpits that got developed into high end subdivisions after the useful sand was all mined harvested removed.

Omaha Garden of Nebraska Heroes?

West Wichita has a lot of these lakes too

In this image, I believe there are subdivisions named Bay Country, Rolling Hills, and Pine Grove, none of which should be used to describe the terrain of Wichita, Kansas.

West Shores Lake has captured my imagination.  I'm concerned about what people are doing with all those docks. Swimming?  :surprised: Over under on algae blooms with that many watered and chemically treated lawns draining into it?

More West Lake Shores thoughts....the ideal spot would be to have your home at the tip of one of the dong shaped isthmus'.  Much more shoreline than the suckers in concave inner coves.  Inner cove folk will probably tell you some bullshit about "protected from wave," but whatever.

It is definitely the #1 teen makeout spot. Just imagine sneaking out of your parents house off Jones circle, jumping into your canoe (no motorized boat or the parents would hear) and heading over to Jessica's dock off Leavenworth Circle where she is waiting. She jumps in your canoe and you paddle out to West Shores Island and listen to music on your phone while playing tonsil hockey for like 3 hours before you have to drop her back off.
