Post by: Dugout DickStone on March 11, 2011, 08:01:50 PM
Just bought a new Stingray!  This thread for boating enthusiasts only.

Just idle over, toss me your line, drop anchor and let's talk about boats and boating!

Until a couple years ago we had a 19 foot VIP. It was disgustingly elite. Nice boats are such convenient status symbols.

18' procraft fish/ski with a 150 EFI yamaha outboard.  Not very elite, but it covers all of the bases.

You bringing her to Tuttle for the 4th?

I know BSAC wants to take the house boat out at Lake of the Ozarks that week, but I can't make it down there.

I might.

I guess you haven't talked to BSAC but the Ozarks house boat is currently in fed custody.  They took "The Rainmaker III" last Monday.  It's that whole Cayman deal that they have been hassling him about.  Of course he will win and probably get his fees but for now it's dry-docked.

Better question:  why would I care, I'm a Cats fan.

They could jack fuel up to $100 a gallon and it won't fade my watersports this summer.

Hey DS, want to go to Hillsdale and have a Boatpak?  I know where the Hillsdale party cove is.   :gocho:

What are your favorite songs to play on your boat stereo when you are having a hardcore boatpak?

Obviously I like to crank up "Redneck Yacht Club" and catch some sun.  Then take a lap  :driving:

I don't have a radio on mine, but would def. fit the redneck yacht club.  Just bought it from my dad.  He bought it ~1983 for $75 with a split in the hull.  We think it was originally built ~1950.  Patched it up, reconfigured the seating, built a trailer from spare parts including an axle from an old Oldsmobile.  The things taken use and abuse of all kinds and keeps right on going.  Pure fishing boat, although we have pulled a skier on it in the past, but they couldn't weigh over about 180 lbs.  And the real kicker....he painted the outside a few years ago.  Purple and Silver with Powercats on the stern.  A real aquatic KState0 machine.

Its a "will catch as many fish as I would spending 100X as much" boat.  Lots of tradition in that boat.

As a fisherman; It's very important to have a quick release for your trolling motor for cruising occasions.   Some bro's & I used to hit the "Nude" beach pretty hard at Milford.   Actually proposed to my wife on that beach.

Not really a nude beach; but most regulars call it that because someone painted "NUDE BEACH" on a big piece of ply-wood & nailed it to a tree.   I've never seen anyone nude there; which is why above I put "Nude" in parenthesis.

It was really nice out yesterday, and I want to nominally go out into the lake by my place with a person or two and our dogs, as well as to be able to go out into some other water in the area.  So I want an inflatable boat that can be thrown in the back of my car or in the case of the nearby lake and lagoon, walked there.

I'm thinking this one: https://www.amazon.com/Intex-Mariner-4-Person-Inflatable-Aluminum/dp/B00CMBTCHW/

It's a bit tougher material than this one: https://www.amazon.com/Intex-Excursion-4-Person-Inflatable-Aluminum/dp/B005S6GY74/

so I think it'll hold up to dog nails better, and the first one has a dedicated space for the battery for when I'd attach a motor.  I like the backrests in the seats of the 2nd one though.

For as cheap as they are, I could get both, or get the 2nd and see if it's adequate before getting the first.  This thing - https://www.amazon.com/Intex-Motor-Mount-inflatable-Boats/dp/B000NNM4BW/ - works for either, and I could get a trolling motor of the power that would work for either.

These seem fine, and have a range of power options:

https://www.amazon.com/Newport-Vessels-Saltwater-Electric-Trolling/dp/B00VYP3QOM
https://www.amazon.com/Minn-Kota-Freshwater-Transom-Trolling/dp/B0043H31GG

Then it's just getting one of these from Costco: https://www.costco.com/interstate-27dc-marine--rv-battery.product.100476408.html

and maybe one of these:

https://www.amazon.com/MinnKota-Trolling-Motor-Power-Center/dp/B001PTHKMG/
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01AE2TG7G

and I should be good to go social distance myself in the middle of a lake/lagoon/bay with some beer and a human/dog or 3 all summer, right?

Anyone ever pieced one of these together?

I have done that exact setup and it will work. It’s nearly impossible to avoid getting a small leak here and there though after a while.  They sell patch kits but it may make it the whole summer without issue.

Intex motor mount, mariner, Minn Kota trolling motor.  I just used a standard size marine battery for power but you could probably use one of these if you aren’t going far https://www.amazon.com/Mighty-Max-Battery-Wilderness-Trolling/dp/B00K8E8M1C (https://www.amazon.com/Mighty-Max-Battery-Wilderness-Trolling/dp/B00K8E8M1C)

  I'd looked at that battery but figured I'd get the 27 size at Costco both so that it'll be easy to return if it sucks (or when I eff something up) and to avoid weirdness in shipping something like that.  It's only $20 more.  Any tips on how to most effectively charge it periodically when it's going to be sitting for a while to keep it good?  I saw a lot of differing opinions in various reviews.

What thrust level motor on yours?  I was thinking to get 40-45 pounds, 46 if I need to get the Newport b/c the Minn Kota is out of stock.

This looks fun.  Most use will be right in the middle of this, but if I find it can last a while, it'll be cool to go all the way beyond where it forks left and right to other neighborhoods.

There's a similar body of water in Victoria, BC that my hotel sits right on, that I can probably get away with cruising around in for a bit before getting stopped and pleading dumb american.

Mine is 45 plenty of power since the boat is light.   I got a charger that has trickle charging setting that is supposed to make it last longer I guess.  I just trickle charge it after I use it until it is full and then let it sit. It has lasted 3 years so far.

@wetwillie

These motors are hard to find this time of year.  I ended up ordering this one today when it briefly went from out-of-stock to 2 left.  Looks like it's already out of stock again.

https://www.walmart.com/ip/Newport-Vessels-X-Series-55lb-Thrust-Transom-Mounted-Saltwater-Electric-Trolling-Motor-w-LED-Battery-Indicator-36-Shaft/46851662

I've already bought the minn kota battery box, still have to get the battery.  The instructions for the motor recommend a circuit breaker.  Did you put one on and if so, which one and where?

Last thing I'll need is a charger for the battery.  Link me one, keeping in mind I don't have my own garage to keep it all plugged in all the time.  I'd either have to do it on my balcony, or charge it in my place when I need to use it.  If the charger is dependent on the battery, link me the best combo.
Title: Re: BOATS!!
Post by: Trim on June 24, 2020, 12:17:09 AM
The reviews on the Costco one make it seem like the ideal way to charge it is what I'd be forced to do rather than it constantly sitting on a charger.

Quote
I have two of these batteries in my RV, I keep them charged by plugging in once a month for a day or two when the RV is not being used. I only use it maybe 5 or 6 times a year, so it sits alot. I never ever leave it plugged in all the time, I dont care what kind of high dollar charger/inverter/converter you have leaving them plugged in is not good.
I bought a set in early 2015 and They are starying to fail. Its 4/22/20 and im heading to Costco for another set today.

Quote
Read through these reviews and find a common theme among the induhviduals that leave negative reviews - hint: it's because they trickle charged. This evaporates the water out of the battery and destroys it. If you store these charged (not on a charger) and keep them charged at least every four months they last 5-7 years.

Quote
I have 2 batteries purchased 2 years ago for my boat. I give them a fresh charge every spring and I have had no trouble.

But none of them specify their charger.

I would go with one of these in your situation given it has a small profile and could be done about anywhere.  They just have terminal clamps for the battery on a car so it should be one size fits all. I never did the circuit breaker so won’t be of much help on that.

Should I go old ass rough boat with fancy new motor (Millennium Falcon, got it where it counts), or nicer boat with older motor?

Those would be pretty good.  I like them.  But, I want to spend less than that, and want have a front mount trolling motor (forgot to mention that). Also at least one live well.

Maybe I just need to buy an old rotten pontoon boat and refurbish it?  There are some sites that have all the stuff to do it. https://www.pontoonstuff.com/pages/renovating-your-pontoon-boat

I have a little cabin on a little lake in Minnesota, so that the dock is just my dock. I'll have to get a canopy/boat lift too.  My in-laws have a couple cabins on this same lake, and teach me all that junk.  They have a service that comes and pulls the docks and boats out and stores the boats in October, and then puts it all back in the spring.  So, I'm pretty locked in on all that stuff.

Pete if you do go pontoon route do not get a shorter one because they are choppy AF on the water compared to a longer one. Nothing shorter than a 24 footer if you're worried about the ride.

are there any limits on boat length, displacement or horsepower on your lake?  If there are not the monster boats up there like you see on lake of the ozarks I think you are on the right track with a pontoon.

If you have skiers and wakeboarders I would not go less than 150 hp and one option is to find a nice used toon that was on a HP limited lake and repower with a new outboard- this gives you a warranty on the most expensive part of the boat but keeps your cost down and you can beat up a used boat as you learn to dock it.

Pontoons & Tritoons are the worst handling boats due as wind pushes them around much more than other boats so banging around a 10 year old boat with a new motor seems like the best option for a new boat owner.

That's a great example of what I'd like to do.     I'll buy one up there, there's a ton more inventory and I don't want to have to tow it all the way up. I'd rather get a Suzuki or Yamaha engine, but Honda or Mercury would be fine I guess if they were new.

It's rough ridin' horrible.  If I do this correctly, I may never ever personally deal with this boat on a trailer.  Buy it and pay to have it put into the water on my lake, then annually pay someone to pull it out and store it for the winter / bring it back in the spring.

Well, I am disappointed to report that the capital investment budget committee has not been seeing eye to eye with me on prioritization of a new vessel to start the spring/summer. This is hugely disappointing.  I was hoping to buy a new one, but now I must do this the bargain basement way for this summer...adding an old motor to an old boat, but at least investing in some good electronics that I can put on a different boat later.

Up north.  The boat that I have presently is a 1976 trihull fiberglass ski boat with a bad motor.  I hauled it from KS to MN late last summer and stored it up there.  I'll slap a used whore of a motor on it for next summer and hope that it gets me until the fall.

A buddy of mine bought a 2 year old boat from a marina on the east coast, one of those that they rent out to tourists for the day. He had to tow it back from VA to KC but claimed it was a steal and they sell them every year at the end of the season and just buy new ones.

I know nothing about boats but maybe look into some arbitrage like that.

Pete, is a fishable pontoon or deckboat still your ideal craft?

Yes, very much headed toward Pontoon ownership.  Two front fishing seats and at least a 90hp motor.

this thread reminds me of this old cartoon short (especially the 1:30 mark) that for some reason i watched 1000 times as a youngster. i think maybe it was at the beginning of an illegally recorded VHS version of robin hood or something.

anyway Goofy plays the role of Pete:

If I'm being honest it's actually a really awesome concept.  Modular units on the deck and a more powerful engine than 90% of budget pontoons would have with an outboard. I don't love the jet ski style steering unit but I could look past it.

That and this speaks to me. I’d want the lowest maintenance thing possible that’s adaptable to a lot, and is barely a real boat to where I can still pak with little chance of negative consequence and/or where an-y-one sober can take the non-wheel and get us home.

Stress doesn't deserve a place on the water. The simple, intuitive Switch handling is so second nature, it's like riding a bike. Easy to steer, dock, launch and load.

It seems like the answer would be to buy a new one every year, just leave it in the water, then sell it to some MN sucker at the end of season. Rinse and rePete

heh.

I have since added to my used boat armada. I bought a cherry condition 1998 Lund Pro V.  Any future used vessel will be Sunfish (I want 2 so we can race) and/or kayaks.

you’re so damn deep in the boat game at this point, there’s really no way out.  where do you go from here, submersibles?

One of those Russian yachts would probably work pretty good on Milford as a walleye boat, but not sure they make sense for Clinton and Tuttle.

Easing into boat ownership with a used center console pontoon for fishing on the quarry ponds.

What's the dream boat if budget wasn't an issue?  Something like a Ranger 212SL fully loaded?

Yeah, those are nice. Probably their Deep V pro series, or Warrior, Nitro or something else 20 foot+, 100”+ beam, deep V, fiberglass….Like 3500 pounds and just rides like glass across the waves.

I would have said a top of the line Lund before this summer, but I have been in two different huge fiberglass boats on Leach Lake and they handled amazing.
