But for many Western Academic types and other easily brain washed people, communism is/was something to strive for . . . their excuse for things like North Korea was that they just weren't doing it right.

And its amazing the response you get when you ask for an example of a communist country that isn't a police state.

it doesn't look that bad, relatively speaking. plenty of other places around the world look like hell on earth.
visiting there seems like a stupid idea. taking unauthorized pictures even dumber.

I would guess it is full of virgins and the top part is an escape pod for all of the Kim Song Jongs Ils in case they piss of the wrong country.

The hotel thing is some kind of rocket ship full of pandas that are dumb and virgins.

I think it is hilarious that anyone is worried about this country attacking anyone given they can't even finish a rough ridin' hotel.
I will say that the hotel looks elite. However, who is going to stay there? They don't let anyone in and the Russian d00d said that bikes are rare and expensive.
Put that hotel in vegas and you got a winner. The penthouse levels were amazing looking.

Do you mean most people living in Detroit would jump at a chance to live in North Korea? Because that is just dumb.

NPR had a deal on Detroit yesterday. Sid that 1 out of 2 adults are below a 6th grade literacy level. :surprised:

Why would they leave Detroit? They get all sorts of free entitlements. Isn't it the liberal utopia?

I was in Detroit for work a couple times. sd thoughts on Detroit:
-nice baseball stadium
-new Northwest (Delta) airport termy is very nice
-lots of boats for sale
-everyone complains about houses for sale
-the lake is, like, huge. bigger than you think from the air. wow.
-
People say a lot of things about Detroit that just aren't true.
A vendor of mine offices out of a suburb immediately west of Detroit. She told me last week that 80% of murders in Detroit are unsolved. :surprised: It came up while she was telling me that her neighbor killed his wife and kids two weeks ago. :surprised:
-

Suburb to Detroit, not actually in Detroit. It came up because she said that if he just took them into the city, odds are no one would have ever caught him, then he wouldn't have had to kill himself in their Wal-Mart parking lot.
-

-
I don't like this thread any more.
1) People in Detroit don't want to move to N. Korea. Most people still in Detroit are there by choice.
2) People in Detroit can read.
3) "suburbs of Detroit" is dumb. Just say the name or just say Detroit metro.
4) "the unions" aren't like the only reason for the collapse of the big 4. The management was awful, the budgeting was awful, the product was awful for a number of years, the response to consumer demand was poor. "The unions" were a part of a poor strategic decision on the part of management. There are countless stories from machinists, tool and die shops, drafting shops, all of the specialized work that was outsourced by the Big 4 about the incredible mismanagement and overruns. Literally every shop had a "GM account" that they dumped losses on and GM did not care or notice. Ford for a quarter century measured their invoices with a pound scale.
5) the murder rate is bad, but that clearance rate is not accurate without a link pls
6) the opportunity in Detroit is/will be incredible. Hating on Detroit is passe. It is a Larry the Cable Guy joke. It is proudly and profoundly ignorant. The only thing that is nice about it is it keeps the fearful and ignorant driving to Branson. On the highway, in their car, too dumb to comprehend the irony.
-
I agree on the oppy in Detroit. Huge workforce just waiting for jobs. Lots of cheap real estate for fabrication/manufacturing. Lots of existing infrastructure for shipping. Basically all it needs is money and someone with a good idea and balls.
Not hating, just repeating what I have heard recently.
As for reading:
What is the functional illiteracy rate in Detroit?
47% of metro Detroiters are reportedly functional illiterate.

-
47% is just shy of 1 out of 2. Also, that is from a separate source. I initially heard the stat on NPR yesterday. I pulled the above stat off of a diff site.
Again, not hating on what is obviously your beloved city, just repeating what I have heard recently.

My original comment was completely tongue in cheek. I don't actually believe that anyone in Detroit wants to move to NK. However, that "huge workforce just waiting for jobs" is going to be waiting a crap ton longer since we've out sourced damn near every job that a functional illiterate could do.
The education and training of the Detroit workforce is entirely different than virtually any growth industry today. The U.S. is still No. 1 in manufacturing but the industry employs a shitload fewer people due to productivity gains.
Those same gains means that the factory workers left are smarter/have more education than the previous generation. A high school diploma was fine for the guy pulling sheet metal off a stack and throwing it on a press. Not exactly what the company is looking for to run its robotic assemblies though.
Companies are more likely to locate in an area where the populace is trained. It's why the I-70 corridor in Missouri is attracting companies like Intel, IBM and Google for data storage. Yes, they're getting some incentives from the state, electricity is marginally cheaper in some locations there, but the primary factor for most of them was there is a trained workforce already in place.
Detroit isn't coming back until it can solve some really big issues that don't have any easy answers.

I really hope that you aren't saying that central MO has a higher intelligence base than Detroit. I have never been to Detroit, but I have been to central MO often and I cannot image a place with a higher concentration of retards.

Yes, the I-70 corridor is full of retards.
In the 2000 census, 69 percent of people living in Detroit had a high school diploma (national rate is 83 percent) just 11 percent had a bachelors degree (half the national average).
Columbia has about half the number of bachelor's degrees despite having just 10 percent of the population of Detroit. St. Louis and KC (the actual cities) also have substantially higher rates of educational achievement than Detroit.

There are brand new townhomes within walking distance of Fox Theatre that are under $100,000. So yeah, the foreclosures are available for a few thousand in back taxes, but buying new is pretty attractive too.

North Korea is fascinating. I'm pretty dedicated to learning more about it. Apparently, their kids march to school each day in uniforms signing hilarious war songs.

Found out they built this huge dam in the mid 80's called the barrage, its apparently one of the greatest accomplishments showing how amazing the party is and they shoot lots of official photos with it as a backdrop.
In reality it flooded valuable farmland and has contributed to the famines in the 90's...

Emailed the weird huge hotel link and the amusement park link to my lady and this was her response.
This reminds me of the time in high school where Governor Murkowski (the lifelong Alaskan politician who got ousted by Palin in a primary) came to do a question and answer session on politics. When one of my classmates asked him what his opinions were on the rumors of nuclear weapons in North Korea, he went on this long rant about a trip he once took to North Korea and how strange of a place it was -- there were business districts devoid of any people, with entire shopping malls selling only teddy bears and the only other patrons of the mall besides western tourists were paid shoppers to make the mall look busier than it really was (because no North Koreans can afford teddy bears). And then he also told us that the amusement parks were full of paid patrons as well. I wonder if he's been to the "fun fair." He never got around to talking about the nuclear weapons, which was probably the only non-hilarious question that my class asked that day (probably why he lost to Palin).

I really enjoyed getting this perspective. This was my favorite:
The highlight for me a comedy routine with plate spinning that enlisted an audience member, obviously a plant, but to see this man in his dark suit with Kim Il Sung pin stumble around in slapstick seemed almost subversive after what I had seen on the streets for several days, and I laughed and laughed.
If you poke around at all online, you can see a bunch of documentaries that basically follow this same trip itinerary. It might be in this thread somewhere.
What a great line:
Air Koryo made its thrice-weekly journey four decades back to the future.

I bet they had to bring in the police to clean out the orphans and squatters that lived in it to get those pictures. I bet it's ruled by the squatter king who lives at the top. the squatter hierarchy of importance goes from the top down with the orphans at the lower levels. the higher ups get to go to the top in a large bucket that is hoisted by a mule going around and around a pulley at the base.
-
the tower has it's own economy with 1 pound sacks of grain making up the primary currency. homemade bathtub gin can be bought at the rate of one liter per sack of grain. some trade goods take up entire floors of the building. the clothing floor is number 47. most clothes are made by animal skins and gunney sacks sown together by the craftsmen.
-
the orphans at the bottom are charged with going out into the "outside" by the higher ups to barter their goods and services. some of the top dwellers spend their entire lives never leaving the building given the arduous journey to the bottom. only the squatter king and his cronies get to use the bucket elevator. much of the journey involves climbing homemade ladders made of sticks and tied together with vines.
-
i am fascinated by this barter kingdom, please continue
-
floors 20-35 are where livestock is raised. their waste is shoveled down into the center of the building for the orphans to form into bricks which they trade to the outside world as fertilizer. there are thousands of goats and rabbits inside the building. many are blind having never seen sunlight. some of the residents of the tower have developed night vision and their eyes shine a bright red when a light is flashed in their direction. there are 27 basement levels as well. the original building was only built with 4 but the tower occupants have been digging non-stop adding sub-floor after sub-floor. each descending level has it's own residents which most claim get crazier as you go down. the lowest levels are occupied by only the most insane individuals according to legend. it's basically another seperate economy even outside of the squatter king's control.
-
what happens to human waste? and dead people? or do these sunless souls never die?
-
In the 70s the NK government tried to evict all the residents. they sent in 200 troops armed with machine guns. they were told that they should force the squatters out alive if possible but they were to get them out one way or another if it came to it. over the course of a week they cleared out most of the orphans and made it to floor 21. at this point the squatter king sent a dignitary to meet the troops and negotiate a peace agreement. the dignitary was killed by the troops and sent up to the squatter king in the bucket elevator along with a note that they were coming for him next. the troops camped out on floor 21 and made radio contact with the NK government at 9PM telling them that they were progressing up the tower as expected. The next day they couldnt be reached by radio. Another 200 troops were sent in to locate them but dissapeared the very next day after checking in at floor 3. a lone orphan was seen leaving the tower and heading to the capital building with a note. when the NK government was asked next what they would do with the tower their response was that it no longer exists. they were pressed about destroying it from the outside and they only repeated that it no longer exists and nobody was to ever enter the area again. they erected large concrete barriers around the tower but included open doorways that were 10 feet by 10 feet in each direction N/S/E/W. they would not discuss why they did. to this day you will periodically see a lone orphan with a note exit the tower and head to the capital building. he is always sent back unhindered and allowed to enter the tower.
-
more!
this could be a really good movie
-
a lot of strange legends about the tower are told. the NK news cannot discuss the tower or the activity in or around it so no formal records exist. some of the locals claim that, at night, they will see what appear to be giant birds perched at the top of the tower. they claim they see them leap from the tower taking flight. a lot of people think they must be hang gliders or something similar but the locals allege they flap their wings like birds and can gain altitude and change direction.

-
it's said that a lot of people will give up on their live's or go searching for a better one in the tower. while the NK government covers up the existance of the tower and anything that goes on around it they strangely never stop people from entering it. most over their teenage years are never seen again. sometimes the younger people that enter the tower come back out with the orphans that live in the base floors. when questioned, they just describe a building where they live for shelter and protection from the elements. they don't mention the upper or lower floors. when asked about them they just shrug and say they don't go there. when you ask them why they just look at you with a dead look and eventually shrug again. at roughly the age of 15 they are never seen again. they don't seem to dread this approaching age and again just shrug when questioned about it. most believe they are then granted access to the upper or lower levels. some believe they are given a choice as to which direction to go, up or down. while some things are known about the higher and lower levels the extreme ends of these are a mystery. legend has it that the very top levels are a real progressive society, an eden, and the very lowest are a hellish existence...though a few say the opposite.
-

-
the question i have is what do they do for entertainment in the tower? do they produce their own closed circuit television station?
Puppets, lots and lots of puppet shows.
-
Once an child was seen brining a letter to the NK capital building from the tower. The next day the child left the capital building with a group of 3 scientists and entered the tower. 5 days later the scientists were picked up at the entrace to the tower by an army transport, taken to the capital building and never seen in public again.

Yeah, and Simple Jack plays. Probably a fair amount of Thunderdome-type justice/entertainment. Here we are paying exorbitant amounts of money to feed and house our criminals while these guys are profiting off theirs fighting to the death.
-
Do the tower people celebrate NK holidays or do they have their own set? I bet there has probly been some kind of conflict between the basement dwellers and upper level residents on this issue. Maybe the king... oh never mind.

North Korea says a new nuclear test will be part of clash with U.S.
By K.J. Kwon, CNN
Seoul, South Korea (CNN) -- North Korea said Thursday that it plans to carry out a new nuclear test and further long-range rocket launches, all of which it said are a part of a new phase of confrontation with the United States.
The North's National Defense Commission said the moves would feed into an "upcoming all-out action" that would target the United States, "the sworn enemy of the Korean people."
Carried by the state-run Korean Central News Agency, the defense commission statement followed a United Nations Security Council resolution on Tuesday that condemned North Korea's recent rocket launch and expanded existing sanctions.
North Korea, which often issues bellicose statements in its state media, said Thursday that it rejected all Security Council resolutions concerning it.
It described this week's resolution as "the most dangerous phase of the hostile policy toward the DPRK," using the abbreviated version of its official name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

it's really kind of tragic and humorous and fascinating at the same time. I mean it's essentially the equivalent of me saying I'm going to build a long range rocket and nuclear warhead and take over the world...and then starving my family in an attempt to do it. meanwhile I can barely get a model rocket off the ground in my backyard.
I kind of feel like all we'd need to do was send in a small team of navy seals to take out KJU and hijack and take over their state news department and we'd instantly be able to save an entire country of people. I mean everyone in that entire country except for a few pampered elites in pyongyang has to absolutely despise that guy, right?
-
What are the actual consequences of shooting down their next missile test? Do they storm SK with their starving 1960's army? Do they shell Seoul? Or do they deny it was shot down at all?

I think we should figure out where they are going to launch from and drone strike it.
-
so you guys want to spend millions of dollars and launch a government counter-offensive to thwart my backyard model-rocket launch?

I really giggle at the thought of a youtube vid of a kid getting ready to shoot off his model rocket in his backyard with his dad there filming, when you hear the buzz of a drone flying overhead and the model rocket just explodes.

Well seoul, a city of 23 million people with twice the population density of NYC, is only 45 miles away from the NK border. It would be pretty easy for NK to bomb/shell the bejesus out of Seoul if they wanted to which would probably kill quite a few people.

Does NK even have missiles to shell Seoul with, though? Their last nuclear test was a huge failure, iirc.

They have regular artillery, but lots and lots of it. I think I read somewhere that the NK could hit Seoul with 10's of thousands of shells per hour if it came to armed conflict again.

Indianapolis Motor Speedway has capacity for 400,000.

some of you haven't thought the whole "shelling of seoul" thing through as much as the powers that be in north korea have. they can talk crap and act like a super-power all they want but the second they start attacking other countries, that crap's gonna end pretty quickly and poorly for them. I'm guessing they're not willing to effectively commit suicide just because somebody shot down their shitty rocket.
-
I might be wrong here, but isn't their test site over the ocean? I mean, that sounds like an environmental disaster, and I think we should probably deal with them for that alone.

Yeah, it hasn't just been the seoul thing either, it has been a china thing. China was their bro forever. However, lately China has been displeased with them publicly for pursuing the long range missile/nuke stuff. Best thing to do would be for us to figure out a way for the missile to "accidentally" hit something it wasn't supposed to and cause some damage. They would lose pretty much all support if something stupid like that happened after the whole world(including big china bro) had basically told them they were stupid for proceeding how they have been.

We have lasers that can give South American dictators cancer. Surely we have a way of guiding this missile to "accidentally" land right on top of the great wall of China or something.

What does NK think a long range nuke will get them? More ipods? Electricity at night? Cows for the hungry?
I mean, do they think they can just pop off a successful test then write a Dr. Evil style note demanding money and lavish stuff from the world? I understand that they don't participate in the rest of the world, but they understand that this isn't how it works, right?

I don't think they are aware that the rest of the world, other than maybe the United States, has electricity.

There have been ships caught off of Japan going to and from NK, to and from Iran and other countries carrying nuke plant parts. :dunno:

-
The thing about NK is you can't let them get all these nukes and missiles is they are crazy/desperate enough to use them. Also if you let them get all there toys, you can invade them to take them away. They have the 1st or 2nd largest military in the world. Only nukes can stop that large of a force without thousands of losses from any collation that would form to stop them.

I don't know. I bet you could pull the Native American on them and infect a bunch of blankets with something that will wipe them out. :dunno: I mean, they don't have heat and stuff. So attack in the winter, offer blankets through some bullshit made up NGO as some aid group and boom.... South Korea gets to remove South from their name.

Well, sure. But, they way they are going about trying to get the cows seems like something the evil character in a Disney cartoon would do. You know, something overly elaborate that has little chance of succeeding to get something silly simple. This has Doofenshmirtz written all over it.

Iraqis did not think that Hussein is a god. NKers do. Most of iraq's army at that time was untrained conscripts. Most of NK's army is made up of zealots. They are well trained and more importantly well feed for the rest of their country.

Um, you need to turn off the DPRK network dude. The country has nothing. Nothing. At least Iraq had dudes who had religious beliefs... You're kidding yourself if you think those guys actually believe that their leader is a God of sorts and wouldn't flip the second they have the choice. The country simply doesn't have enough people to support an army that size unless most of them are pretty worthless.

I really doubt NK even has the industry to arm everyone in their army.

Regardless of the number of soldiers in the North Korean army, their navy and air force are outdated to the point of being practically nonexistent, and they do not have the capabilities of supporting their army in warfare for any extended period of time.

yeah but do they love him because they really believe he's their "dear leader" or do they "love" him because they don't want him to murder their family?
Dear leader.
Granted, I don't know much but I think this is right. They are the last true believer country. It's indoctrinated.
That being said, they do not match up well against us.

lmao, the last thing in the world I worry about is north korea affecting my life. let 'em do whatever they want.
I wouldn't care if they wanted to just have nukes, but I don't want them blowing one up over the ocean.

it's really kind of tragic and humorous and fascinating at the same time.

Any type of war of attrition at all will make NK look like super pud sissies.

I don't know. I bet you could pull the Native American on them and infect a bunch of blankets with something that will wipe them out. :dunno: I mean, they don't have heat and stuff. http://www.theaustralian.com.au/news/world/cannibal-horror-as-10000-north-koreans-starve/story-fnb64oi6-1226563035481
A FATHER in North Korea is reported to have been executed by firing squad after murdering his two children to eat them during a "hidden famine" that may have killed more than 10,000 people last year.
In a litany of horrors documented by undercover reporters, another man dug up his grandchild's corpse for food and a third, driven mad by hunger, boiled his own child and ate the flesh.
The stories were collected by Asia Press, a specialist news agency based in Osaka, Japan, which has a network of "citizen journalists" inside North Korea and is regarded as credible.
Dozens of interviews and clandestine reports have led it to conclude that "considerable numbers of people" - probably more than 10,000 - have died in North and South Hwanghae provinces, south of Pyongyang, the capital.
North Korea has not officially confirmed any deaths. A government-supervised mission by the UN last September reported a food surplus in both provinces, yet the clandestine reporting depicts a pattern of misery and death while Kim Jong-un, the country's leader, spent lavishly on banquets and missile tests. One informant, an official in South Hwanghae, said: "In my village in May, a man who killed his own two children and tried to eat them was executed by a firing squad. Digital Pass $1 for first 28 Days
"While his wife was away on business he killed his eldest daughter and, because his son saw what he had done, he killed his son as well. When the wife came home, he offered her food, saying: 'We have meat.'
"But his wife, suspicious, notified the Ministry of Public Security, which led to the discovery of part of their children's bodies under the eaves."
In its detailed 12-page report, Asia Press identifies reporters and sources by pseudonyms. "Particularly shocking were the numerous testimonies that hit us about cannibalism," said the agency's Jiro Ishimaru.
Gu Gwang-ho, one of the reporters in North Korea, wrote: "There was an incident when a man was arrested for digging up the grave of his grandchild and eating the remains."
In May in Haeju, South Hwanghae's main city, a man who had killed 11 people and sold the meat as pork was executed by firing squad.
"In a village in Chongdan county, a man who went mad with hunger boiled his own child, ate his flesh and was arrested," said a mid-ranking official of the ruling Korean Workers Party.
These incidents reportedly took place as Mr Kim, 30, marked his ascent to power with a new image, a glamorous wife and two costly rocket launches.
Last week, he followed these with a defiant pledge to retaliate against the latest UN sanctions by staging a third nuclear weapons test "aimed at the United States".
Early last year, officials confiscated food from farm collectives in North and South Hwanghae to supply the army and reward the privileged residents of Pyongyang for their loyalty to the Kim dynasty, the undercover reporters say.
But then a drought struck and, from April to June, farmers and their families in these "breadbasket" provinces began to die.
"One family was completely wiped out, everyone died of starvation, while another family gave up hope of living and killed themselves," said Gu.
A hospital administrator said there was no wood for coffins or cremations, so the dead had been wrapped in straw mats and tipped into an unmarked common grave.
"The farming villages I visited from May to June were in such a tragic state that I had to cover my eyes," the party official added. "There was no food at all. Casting out elderly parents or abandoning children was nothing rare."
"Political waste" on celebrations and extra rations for Pyongyang were key factors, according to the reporters.
Mr Kim, a plump, beaming figure, ordered new apartment blocks, imported equipment for a fairground and a dolphinarium, staged lavish festivities and appeared at a pop concert with his pregnant wife.
"The smooth transfer of power . . . was the top priority," according to the reporters. The famine in the Hwanghae provinces has passed its peak, the reports say. It is probable that when the UN team visited the area in the autumn, it was shown no evidence of it.
Japanese government sources say North Korea has developed a compact nuclear weapon that can fit on to a missile capable of reaching the US's west coast. The device may be equal in force to the atomic bomb that destroyed the city of Nagasaki in 1945, the sources told the Asahi Shimbun newspaper.
As Mr Kim celebrates his first year in power, it is clear thousands have paid for his adventures.

If there was ever a case for a clandestine assassination, this is it.

That void would be huge. Does that country have anyone that could step in w/o another country occupying for a long period off time to deprogram an entire country?
Just isolate and use clandestine stuff to keep them from actually accomplishing anything.

Same article stated that China and USA are partnering up in pushing through punishment of NK with the latest round of proposed sanctions as a result of their latest aggressions. Sounds like China decided that Kim Jong Un is not as fun to bro around with as his pops and they are bro'ing up with us now.

Kim Jong-Un Comes Out In Support Of Gay Marriage: 'I'm Not A Monster' (http://www.theonion.com/articles/kim-jongun-comes-out-in-support-of-gay-marriage-im,31821/)
PYONGYANG—As the U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments Tuesday on the constitutionality of banning same-sex marriage, North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un told reporters that, considering he’s not a completely awful human being, he unequivocally believes that gay people should be able to marry. “Of course I believe gay and lesbian couples should be treated equally under the law, for God’s sake; I’m not a monster,” the despotic leader said, adding that the idea of trying to stop a loving couple from legally marrying one another is not only wrong from a moral and ethical standpoint but also violates the Fourteenth Amendment. “I have no idea what’s going on with the justices over there, to be honest. The whole thing is a rough ridin' embarrassment.” Kim added that, should the Supreme Court not declare same-sex marriage constitutional in all 50 states, he would strongly consider launching a nuclear weapon at the United States

In one of the articles I read about NK moving that missile over to their east coast, analysts said the missile wasn't aimed at the US. What exactly does that mean.....we have some spies that know where that particular missile is targeted, or is NK too dumb to just point the missile to towards the US??
Not sure if it matters since they don't have a missile with that sort of range.

If I was going to make a NK Docu, it would be about Kim Jun(SP) Ill and it would be called Hole In One: The story about a man that is best at everything.

Putting this down right now. NK is going to launch a missile (test or live), US is going to shoot it down. NK is going to get all butt hurt and drop thousands of artillery shells on Seoul. Off to war we go.

Isn't our success rate at shooting crap down pretty low? Like under 40%?

This is a good question. Isn't Isreal basically using the one we use? I mean, they get hit by rockets a lot lately.
I would hope that there is some super bad ass missile defense product out there that was secretly hidden a while back when all we heard about were failures and cost overruns for the other major missile defense thing under Bush.

I'm guessing we have some sort of super awesome missle defense system that we dont tell anyone about and wont loan out to any of our buddies.

Well hopefully we've made some strides since the whole Patiot missle/First Gulf War mess. Although admittedly ICBM's are a lot different than SCUD's.

People seem to forget that the patriot missile system was adapted in its anti ballistic missile role. It was a very good anti air system

Not entirely sure you know the acronym.

When I think ICBM, I think of it exiting atmosphere and re-entering. Not necessarily travelling across a huge ocean.

When I think ICBM I think of:
Inter
Continental
Ballistic
Missile
-
I read their range is 1500 miles, which excludes Hawaii and Guam.
-
Ok, where is the divergence?
-
Ok, where is the divergence?
Re-read for comprehension.
Here is a helpful hint:
Testifying before a parliamentary hearing, Defense Minister Kim Kwan-jin of South Korea said the missile North Korea had moved to the east coast, possibly “for demonstration or for training,” appeared not to be a KN-08, which analysts say is the closest thing North Korea has to an intercontinental ballistic missile, though its exact range is not known. The new missile was unveiled during a military parade in the North Korean capital, Pyongyang, last April.
South Korean media quoted unnamed military sources as saying that the missile was a Musudan. Deployed around 2007, the Musudan is a ballistic missile with a range of more than 1,900 miles, according to the South Korean Defense Ministry. Guam is nearly 2,200 miles from North Korea.
-
Ballistic indicates exiting atmosphere?
-
i don't know how far NK is from Japan, but it would be pretty boss if they talked crap on the USA and then surprised the crap out of Japan. Maybe Dennis Rodman and his BFF enjoyed the Ben Affleck Pearl Harbor movie.

The rocket they used to put the piece of junk into orbit could reach the US. Could it carry a nuke, no.
-
If they fired this missle across the Straight of Gibraltar, would that not be intercontinental? That's only like 10 miles.
-
Look. There are ranges associated with the classification. ICBM is a pretty high bar. Not every nuclear country has this capability. So you could play 20 questions or you could just look this readily available information up on your own. Your call.

I am not a rocket scientist, but I don't think that just because something is multi-stage and can reach space means that it is really capable of doing what an ICBM does.

Other than the whole titletown thing, it's a pretty good time to live in Manhattan, KS in case everyone starts firing missiles at each other.

Looked it up, an ICBM is classified as a missile with a range of 5500 KM. the failed launch of NK's ICBM traveled over 3000 KM on two of its 3 stages. This rocket was successful in all three stages this year.

Israel was trying to defend against hundreds of tiny rockets that were only in the air a very short time. Seems like we'd have better luck shooting down one that has to travel like all the way to Guam or whatever. S. Korea may get shelled but I'm not really worried about those guys. Hell, it would probably be good for our economy.

Look, this happens every year where NK rallys up the troops against the Americans and the South Koreans because "war is imminent", and nothing ever rough ridin' happens. What is the president supposed to do? Strike? If it turns out that there was no real threat, we'll have another Highway of Death situation on our hands. We'll get our defense missiles ready, North Korea will pussy out again, and we'll laugh at this non-issue.

I always forget that the moment B.O. became president, the office of the POTUS immediately lost all power to control everything domestic and foreign, except for the good stuff he decides to take credit for. My bad.

Probably, its just NK. No big deal, they only have a few nukes they test every once in a while and a homicidal maniac dictator operating an indoctrinated police state. I mean, what risk could they possibly present.

The same thing we do when a homicidal maniac kills a bunch of people in the US, take away everyone's liberty. Maybe B.O. could pull an FDR and intern everyone who looks Korean until the conflict is over? Since its impossible to do anything until the homicidal maniac actually takes action.

If you like talking about NK, but aren't interested in FSD stuff, you could choose not to respond to FSD.

To the extent there is violence and ruthless dictatorships in the world, that of course is not one persons fault. Nobody is arguing that.
To the extent the POTUS drastically underestimated and neglected a clearly dangerous situation to the point we're sending a missile defense system to Guam, that is clearly B.O.'s fault. Arguing otherwise is silly.
Stop apologizing for this man's naivete and incompetence. It makes you look NK citizenie.

Read an article a couple of weeks ago saying its no big deal because they have not closed down the joint SK/NK business park in Kaesong. NK just closed it :ohno:.
Did some reading on that business park and its kind of a big deal. Opened in early 2000's 6 miles north of DMZ as part of the sunshine process and has never been closed even after NK shelled the island and sank the SK ship in 2010.
A bunch of SK companies have production facilities there and its staffed by North Koreans but the wages go directly to Pyongang, estimated 90 million dollars a year.

Yeah, saw something on that. Basically said that the factory group is the biggest rev source for NK outside of assistance from others. Closing that is a crazy burnitdown type move. Also, two days ago, Crazy McCrazypants told all embassies to GTFO if they want out and implied that crap may be getting real.

Russia/China are clearly the only reason we didn't invade a long time ago. You should have listened to General Mac Harry!!
I mean look at this potential treasure trove:
In fact, North Korea is sitting on the goldmine. The northern side of the Korean peninsula is well known for its rocky terrain with 85% of the country composed of mountains. It hosts sizeable deposits of more than 200 different minerals, of which deposits of coal, iron ore, magnesite, gold ore, zinc ore, copper ore, limestone, molybdenum, and graphite are the largest and have the potential for the development of large-scale mines. After China, North Korea's magnesite reserves are the second largest in the world, and its tungsten deposits are almost the sixth-largest in the world. Still the value of all these resources pales in comparison to prospects which promise the exploration and export of rare earth metals.
Rare earth metals are a group of 17 elements which are found in the earth's crust. They are essential in the manufacture of high-tech products and in green technologies, such as wind turbines, solar panels or hybrid cars. Known as "the vitamins of high-tech industries," REMs are minerals necessary for making everything that we use on a daily basis, like smartphones, LCDs, and notebook computers. Some Rare earth metals, such as cerium and neodymium, are crucial elements in semiconductors, cars, computers and other advanced technological areas. Other types of REMs can be used to build tanks and airplanes, missiles and lasers.
South Korea estimates the total value of the North's mineral deposits at more than $6 trillion USD. Not surprisingly, despite high political and security tensions Seoul is showing a growing interest in developing REMs together with Pyongyang. In 2011, after receiving permission from the Ministry of Unification, officials from the Korea Resources Corp visited North Korea twice to study the condition of a graphite mine. Together with their counterparts from the DPRK's National Economic Cooperation Federation they had working-level talks at the Kaesong Industrial Complex on jointly digging up REMs in North Korea. An analysis of samples obtained in North Korea showed that the type of rare earth metals could be useful for manufacturing LCD panels and optical lenses. Montreal Review August 2012

US chopper crashed near NK.

Time for a story. Just a few days after I was born my dad was in a Chinook that went down along the NK border (entire crew survived). I guess (back then) they'd fly up and down the border noting the field artillery positions of the NK's. He said they'd get shot at all the time, but the NK's would be sure the bullets were passing either behind or ahead of the chopper, like not trying to shoot them down.

While the DPRK cannot hold its own if faced with an assault, they can level South Korea and destroy Seoul and other cities. Considering SK is the 15th largest economy, and a place where tens of millions of people live, it is in nearly everyone's interest to avoid this.
-
North Korea cannot level Seoul. They would be able to inflict damage but no where near what people fear. Keep a couple things in mind. These are static firing positions that have been plotted for decades. They are using Soviet era technology that has had little maintenance . The US has had over a decade to refine our countermeasures for incoming indirect fire. See Iraq, Afghanistan, and Israel's Iron Dome.

We can stop shells in mid flight? They have have enough pieces in place to level Seoul within the first hour of firing. Our response would take longer than that to muster.

(interesting info here. Pretty well researched. Also note that I would be willing to bet that google earth has provided better maps than what NK currently has, assuming they haven't been using Google's program to update their own works.)
The secret here is counter battery fire. It is true they would get off a few rounds but the US has been putting a lot of R&D into these systems, especially because of the recent decade of war. NK equipment is old and slow whereas the US is going to be using the newest technology. So not only has a lot of research been done in the last 60 years to locate these targets, we've also been developing the technology to counter fire unknown positions. NK has many pieces that can reach Seoul, but many of them seem to be in hardened positions. I trust American and Korean technology, training, and superior tactics to effectively neutralize them quickly before Seoul has catastrophic damage to the entire city. Now there are wild cards, if NK decides to use a tunnel to plant a nuke, that is a complete game changer. I'm assuming a simple symmetric engagement with conventional artillery, ground, and air force deployment.
-
Bet Kim is pissed that someone blew up the Boston Marathon. Know one care about NK anymore.

Come back from fantasy land. There are nearly 100,000 KNOWN artillery positions pointed at Seoul. In less than 1 minute you would have over 1 million 152mm rounds in flight. Nothing is going to stop that, nothing.
They have been perfecting this for over 50 years.

Nice use of mouth breathing instead of posting facts.
There hundreds ok known sites with only a few that can ACTUALLY reach Seoul.
Keep in mind there are only 8,000 or so artillery systems on the border, with only a fraction of a percentage with significant range. I can't stress this enough, it's cold war cast off equipment. That means no electronically assisted reloading, no computer assisted repositioning equipment. They are old and slow guns.
Second point, that 'over 1 million 152mm rounds in flight' is just a bizarre interjection. I mean I'm sure you were being facetious, but its still a really stupid thing to say. Here is the issue at hand. The weapons that can reach Seoul are all in hardened positions. If they move into a firing position allied forces can strike them easily. These are known targets so they will be pre-assigned targets for artillery and air resources. The rest of their artillery would have to be moved into position to strike other targets. With allied advanced reconnaissance tracking them it would be a task, but very do-able task. Most importantly is that the NKs might be able to release a handful of volleys. With the significant advantage in technology in counter battery fire, those positions would be wiped out before they could inflict serious damage to major population centers.
Lets look at the 2010 artillery incident. The NK's had a 40% hit rate on Yeongpyeong island with PRE POSITIONED artillery pieces. South Korea's counter battery fire was able to inflict significant damage in response to NK aggression.
Yes it would suck to live in Seoul during the opening moments, significant, but not heavy casualties might occur, but the city will not be in flames from millions of rounds impacting.
The wildcard people don't talk about enough is the training and maintenance of their military. Yes its huge, but is not well funded or equipped. Look at Iraq Part I and II. There was a great fear of their traditional military. There were points in the invasion where it became painfully obvious the Iraqis had no idea what they were doing because they had prepositioned all their artillery to places marked in the desert by 40 gallon oil drums. American tanks literally drove around them and the Iraqis couldn't walk in their fire fast enough or efficiently enough to counter an advancing column.
-
You sure they weren't 55 gallon drums?

Did you see how the Boston cops found a dude laying in a boat in the backyard of a house? Pretty certain the US Military knows whether or not two effing missile launchers moved an inch in NK.

I would put money down that the US military knows more about NK's real time force disposition than Kim Un does.

The guy who smuggles in thumb drives of current movie/TV shows was kind of interesting. I was going to go with camera in the button, seems like that's what all the old Spy Movies would do and I kinda picture north korea as some 1960's cold war villain.
-
When the teenage girls were watching the bootleg DVD....and the camera-man pans up to show the 2 portraits of the Kim's that are in every room.
That's normal (for there). Basically every room has to have their portraits in it or you're considered disloyal.
So guys what was the weirdest part for you?
I kinda love the crap out of watching every documentary about North Korea that I can get my hands on so a lot of this was pretty familiar to me. That said, the women standing up to the soldiers was pretty damned extraordinary. Especially over something as seemingly trivial about whether a woman can wear pants or not. The soldiers just sort of simultaneously talking crap and taking their dissent instead of immediately beating the crap out of them/hauling them off was also pretty surprising.
I was also a little surprised that they didn't show any scenes of public executions as you sometimes saw footage of those being smuggled out under Kim Jong Il and making its way to Japanese/South Korean news stations. Is it because that sort of thing is considered too gruesome for primetime tv or because Kim Jong Un is trying to be less brutal in public and is shifting to an almost exclusive use of labor camps like Yodok for the purpose of purging political dissidents?
-
I don't know the answer to that question but either one is terrifying and sad. :frown:

If those two idiot ambassadors were dumb enough to go back to NK then they probably serve little purpose on this earth. Good riddance.

The North Korean capital, Pyongyang, is the one point of light in the middle of a desolate sea of darkness between South Korea, on the right, and China, on the left, in this recent image taken from the International Space Station. The upside: lack of light pollution means that North Koreans must have amazing views of the stars. The downside: pretty much everything else.
-
The juxtaposition of North and South Korea is pretty amazing. Both are fairly over the top in opposite directions.

The whole 120 dogs thing is the unbelievable part, imo.
When a man eats a dog, that is not news, because it happens so often. But if a dog eats a man, that is news.

Seoul examines 'North Korea drone'

South Korea says it is analysing what it believes to be a North Korean drone that crashed on a border island shortly after an exchange of artillery fire with North Korea.

Kim Jong Un- "Why does america have so many drone I keep reading about?!? We need some! Build them!"

Maybe its just a huge troll by SK? Their president/PM/Whatever was probably thinking of ways to get NK on April Fools Day and hatched a genius plan to have the local cub scout troop build a drone then pretend NK launched it.

Sweet propaganda vid or something. Because it definitely looked not terrible there. It's all, "Hey! We totally have skate parks! Don't worry about those labor camps."
North Korea was the last country seemingly immune to change—but no longer. Recent years have witnessed mobile phone penetration, a surge in tourists, and even a marathon.

What a delightfully creepy little pocket of the world. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2779139/Has-Kim-Jong-Un-lost-control-North-Korea-Nation-s-former-intelligence-officer-says-overthrown-2013-just-puppet-leader.html (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2779139/Has-Kim-Jong-Un-lost-control-North-Korea-Nation-s-former-intelligence-officer-says-overthrown-2013-just-puppet-leader.html)
Apparently the country is on "lock down" (moreso than before?). Some gems...
It was reported that he has piled on so much weight that he has fractured both his ankles and remains in hospital after an operation.
The leader of the impoverished nation is estimated to have ballooned to 20 stone as a result of fine wining and dining - putting enormous pressure on his feet and legs.
A source who has recently returned to the South Korean capital, Seoul, from the North said Kim is still in hospital under guard from his personal protection team.
Obese Kim is believed to have sprained then fractured his ankles during a gruelling tour of military bases and factories in shoes with Cuban heels to give him a little more height and a physical appearance of more authority.
The leader got a taste for Swiss cheese while a student in Switzerland - and is understood to love it so much that he imports vast quantities, despite Western sanctions.
'He has become noticeably overweight since he came to power,' said the un-named intelligence official.

Maybe Kim can go the ol' Chaz Weis route and run the show from the comfort of a rascal scooter. BOOM, problem solved.

Doesn't solve the height problem, though. What a Segway? That would be so awesome.

Seoul (CNN)North Korea is currently planning a "terrorist attack" on South Korea according to the South's spy agency.
A lawmaker, briefed by the National Intelligence Service (NIS), says leader Kim Jong Un himself gave the order to make preparations.
So, with the latest satellite launch(obvs long range missile), nuke tests, and now the supposed threat of terrorism, seems like war with these assholes is basically inevitable.

It's pretty sad, actually.

Same old crap. They're pussy cats.
I think the Kim Dynasty is aware that if they ever actually crossed a line with South Korea, i.e. used a missile or did something else to instigate war, their reign would come to an abrupt end.

IDK. He seems crazier than daddy. I mean, it seems like he is executing someone in his close circle every couple months. In laws, generals, advisers, etc. Guy isn't just playing crazy, but actually having dogs chew on ppl until they die(ppl not the dogs).

Right. But he's also self-interested. This posturing has gone on for a long time. I very much doubt anything serious will happen.

What would trump do?

A deal
-
Also, that reminds me, i saw a dude with a wwjd bracelet on his backpack yesterday. I could not believe it. He was probably 35.
-
What would trump do?
Trump would build a gigantic super luxurious building right on the border so that everyone in North Korea could see it. Regular guests would be Dan Bilzerian, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Wayne Newton. They would dine on a penthouse balcony for NK spies to behold. On the north facing exterior would be a system of thousands of tied together Samsung TV's displaying what life is like in South Korea. Jobs, horse meat, happy people.

1. Don't ever go to North Korea.
2. If you DO go to North Korea, then ... no, eff that. Just don't ever go.
