pullen & samuels' ortgs have really started climbing with the last couple weeks of games. samuels is basically doing everything really well excpet efg, which is improving. pullen's turnovers are way down, assists up, he's a couple hot games from a 120 ortg. mcgruder, of course, has been doing what he does, well.
if they could add jan-april 2010 kelly to that, you've got 4 solid to v. solid offensive players. plus sadler/irving, neither of which shoots, and both of which are turning it over, but both of which should be ok as a 5th option/open j type combo.
they aren't that far away from being a good team, #40 notwithstanding.

wow, another thread started by a sysquawksmith, how appropriate that the post also has a link to kensquawk pomsquawksmith's website sad really.

Need CK.

the guy getting inexplicably ignored is hamilton (ut). he is putting up numbers that are comparable to durant/beasley, except for ftrate, yet somehow no one really bothers to talk about him.

I think he's gotten good hype nationally, but Barnes has a bit of the Drew effect working against his teams locally. Locals just dismiss the performance of guys like Hamilton and Thompson because they think it's only because Barnes is a recruiter.

They didn't dismiss Durant. If Hamilton continues his play during connference play, he'll get plenty of pub.
-
Hamilton is ridiculous.

You could say there is hope there, but I'm not sure how much we will overcome our offensive inefficiency this year. The TO% is tough b/c it gives away tons of possessions, and then the really poor 2PT% just compounds that issue.

I think Hamilton's problem is that he was expected to do that last season. Like Honeycut from UCLA (although he's not as good and on a much worse team).

Assuming everyone on here watches all the bball games, or at least an overwhelming majority. . .
Question: Do you really needs these stats to tell you that Pullen, McGruder and Samuels have been the best players this season? Moreover, do you really need these stats to verify that Pullen is playing better lately (i.e. turning the ball over less frequently)?
IMO, this is "trust but verify" taken to the nerdiest level possible. FYI - I give that opinion a 85% probability of being accurate.

Fair points.
But I always like to see if numbers compare to the eye test, because often our eyes see what they want to see. Plus, when I look at those numbers, I immediately then look at last year's numbers and see how those guys compare. Pullen and Samuels are still down, McGruder is about the same. But then we have the absense of Kelly this year, plus his offensive numbers are way down and then we are missing Clemente and Sutton, who both had pretty good offensive ratings.
The new guys haven't offset those losses and the returners aren't at least matching what they did last year, so then its easy to see why we've dropped 50 spots (nationally) in our offensive efficiency when compared to last year while our defense remains close to the same. While last year's offense was ugly at times, it was still one of the top 20 most efficient offenses in the country to go with a top 20 defense. Now we have a top 70 offense and top 30 defense, so you can see why we went from a top tier team to a middle of the pack major conference team.

Can't believe I thought Asprilla would score.

By far the most disappointing thing about him. He is actually pretty good at getting position in the post, and has a few decent post moves. However, you can tell he is having a tough time handling the athleticism, length, and physical play at this level b/c he has so much trouble finishing. And then throw in that he is a terrible FT shooter who gets to the line quite a bit, and it makes things even worse. Still a solid rebounder and shot blocker.

Great points, he is like a little taller/slower Hoskins with Colon's ability to finish.

This teams off-the-court disasters have been its downfall. Hard to compare the teams YOY when half the guys aren't playing.
Further, no one has stepped up and filled the second guard spot voided by DC. Pullen is still Pullen but has had no help in the combo guard/point guard roll, which naturally affect his numbers, in addition to the added pressure to create shots. I think we all expected the roll of DC to be taken over by committee. So far the sum of the committee's efforts has been well below that of DC. I wish one of those guys (Irving, Russell, Sprads) would make a giant leap and start "getting it".
No person or computer will ever convince me that Sutton was "efficient" on offense. That guy couldn't shoot, pass, or catch a pass. He could crash the glass, but McGruder has filled that void nicely. It's nice having a 3 that can shoot and slash (just wish he'd do more slashing).
That said: Hopefully the entire front court doesn't foul out tonight. :emawkid: The post play was supposed to be a strength then everyone went AWOL. I think this can (and will) still be a strength in conference play. If anyone steps up and adequately fills that other guard roll we'll be real good come tourney time.

Hopefully Pullen will live up to this...

Still a solid rebounder and shot blocker.
Maybe my eyes are "seeing what they want to," but I see Asprilla as a shitty rebounder for his size and supposedly good hands.

Yeah, you're seeing what you want to see. You presuppose he sucks, so you see him sucking.

It's really because he developed the ball hog reputation last year. Early in the year, everybody in Austin, and some national types were talking about how he was going to win a few, but shoot UT out of a bunch of games this year.
