Aye, NU v NU on beautiful big ten network HD is one of the hidden gems of conf realignment

epic choke by Wazzu leaves the door for the Carmody Crew to get to MSG.
NW down 2 in OT
-
amazing choke at the line to get to OT
-
call me crazy, but i think carmody looks a little like charlie sheen.
-
nice of the WSU coach to mention their lack of banners

I think the king is about to be dead.

13 seasons. No NCAAs. In his 9th year he made the NIT for the first time. Now in his 13th year and likely another sub .500 season.
Wooly's dream.
:bawl:

13 seasons. Woof. Should be charged with theft.

Texas State nearly beat them this year :sdeek:

And they won in Waco.

I didn't see the date on the thread...clicked the link and thought they had extended him.

I think the king is about to be dead.
they have, like, their three best players out with injuries. it would be brutally unfair to fire him this year. long live the king.
-
I didn't see the date on the thread...clicked the link and thought they had extended him.
Same here. I was lol'ing, then realized my mistake, but just lol'd some more at the fact that this is season 13.
-
an end of an era :frown:
@NU_Sports Bill Carmody will not return as the head coach of @NUMensBball.

Return of the Doc?

That's Northwestern, FWIW.

fantastic SLTH first sentences
Bill Carmody took Northwestern basketball from the depths of Division I to respectability. But given 13 chances, he could not take the Wildcats to the NCAA tournament.

That may be the best SLTH comment of all time.

Will have to wait for new season of hirings.
-
Right now a leading candidate for the new king is actually Obama's bro-in-law.
5 seasons at Oregon State, 61-70 overall, 27-45 Pac 10/12, 3 CBI appearances (including CBI champs).

Yep, that's a great one. Johnny Dawkins is another possibility.

Yep, that's a great one.
And the record is actually worse than what I said. They went 14-18 this year, and that wasn't included on wikipedia.
After the season he had some great SLTH quotes:
“We’ve made a lot of progress,” Robinson insisted. “You know, when I first got to Oregon State we were trying not to lose by 30. This year, because of these guys’ hard work continually, we were in every game we played in the Pac-12 this year.”
The CBI is a tournament that schools have to buy their way into, and Oregon State wasn’t too proud to do it in three of Robinson’s first four seasons.
“Normally we would say yes to that,” Robinson said. “But these guys want to be NCAA Tournament guys. I don’t know with our record if we would even be invited. But we are raising the bar. We want to feel the sting of not playing in the postseason and see how that motivates us for next year.”
-
Jeff Bzdelik
Have to factor in his suckatude at Colorado and that program's improvement the second he left town and Wake's tradition.
I think he's the winner.
-
Oregon State's coach looks like the front runner, but in researching other potentials, I had no idea how many meaningless games Andy Kennedy has won at Ole Miss.
149-85 (66-64), 5 NIT bids and on the bubble again this year

Good point, but I think he might be slightly better than true SLTH. They seem to be on the bubble every year, and he needs more under .500 seasons. He's actually above .500 in conference games, they've been 7-9, 8-8, or 9-7 every years he's been coach.
-
But it's a rare treat to witness the first year of a SLTH career: http://es.pn/12ZkwoG

Yeah, doesn't meet the qualifications. And that's actually worse than a SLTH.
How does that guy have a job? Does Texas State not care at all about basketball? That's worse than Wooly (who was a Texas State stud).

We were too cheap to buy out his contract (which ends this season). Plus the AD wanted our APR under control after the coach before him basically got the NCAA on our ass. So he's been loathe to fire him even though the fans who are still paying attention universally want him gone.
And yeah, we're like UT fans in that we give absolutely no fucks about basketball. Average attendance is around 1500 :frown:

he's getting fired.
-
I hope so, but our athletic director loves mediocrity. He's the Tom O'Brien of athletic directors.
-
Ole Miss's Andy Kennedy belongs on this list.
If the Rebs miss the Dance, he'll enter Year 8 with 7 NIT's (includes one at Cincy) and zero NCAA tourney appearances, and he'll keep selling the same old Bob Huggins Tree garbage that the fans have fallen for every year until this point.

The SEC seems like it's loaded with SLTH's, confirm/deny?

Kennedy takes his name off the line.
Bzdelik and Robinson are still on the clock.
-
Northwestern has never reached the NCAA tournament. :sdeek:
-
Craig Robinson it is.
-
Craig Robinson shouldn't count IMO. Being the POTUS' bro-in-law has saved his job, he's a very special circumstance.
Also, I bet black college football coaches envy guys like Robinson & Trent Johnson. If they were football coaches both would have already received the life sentence as a NFL position coach.

Trent Johnson always gets out just in time.
I think Mark Fox has to get serious consideration, but that NCAA tourney hurts.

How do Auburn fans feel about Barbee, chings? Does he just need another recruit or two?
-

Fans, they don't care really, but he is feeling heat from boosters who helped build the new coliseum. Not a SLTH because its too early and he is too terrible.

I also nominate Fran Mcaffery from Iowa.

I also nominate Fran Mcaffery from Iowa.
Man I almost added him, and if fact he was the first on the list, but it just hasn't been long enough I think. I was trying to set a base line of at least four years at the school. I mean I am quite confident he will be there next year, along with few others.

I think the four years minimum thing is a good idea. Didn't realize Bennett had been at UVA 4 years. Man.

Fun fact about Bennett: Indiana went after him before Crean and Bennett turned them down.

He's only been a Wake three years, but you can't ignore Bzdelik. 1-26 on the road in conference play and this SLTH quote: "We’ve lost in numerous close games. As these young men grow up, get bigger and stronger, they’re going to turn those close losses into great wins. They really are.”
Students have paid for two adds in the student paper calling for his removal.
Sure he's now in the D-1 dungeon, but Jim Wooldridge, god bless him. Has anybody made more money delivering less? UC Riverside six-year record is 70-122, best record was 14-17, finished this year at 6-25.
-
I also nominate Fran Mcaffery from Iowa.
mccaffery is legitimately a top 10 coach in the country. took over a smoking crater of a program and has quickly rebuilt it into a team that will contend for a big ten title next year. took lehigh to the ncaa tourney. took unc greensboro to the ncaa tourney. took siena to the ncaa tourney three straight years. next year will have iowa in the ncaa tourney.
he's basically lon kruger only smarter and better.

4 years minimum is necessary. You can't be a true SLTH without the LT.

Great list Chingon.
Gotta be Ken Bone. He even had a Cartier Martin.

Gotta be Ken Bone. He even had a Cartier Martin.
But he'll surely get fired this year, right? While McCaffrey will probably turn his nit appearance into a guaranteed fourth year. The pieces are in place!
-
I find it interesting that SLTH used to mean a young, up and coming mid-major coach and now it means someone who has things in common with Wooldridge at K-State. Very egocentric.

Nope
Moos, Bone likely to meet next week

COUGARS
FROM PULLMAN — Washington State athletic director Bill Moos said on his weekly radio show Monday that he plans to meet next week with coach Ken Bone to discuss the future of the program.
Moos did not say specifically whether he's decided Bone will be retained or not. He said the two will recap the season, discuss recruiting and “chart the course” for the future of the team when they meet.
That's standard operating procedure for Moos. He meets with each coach at the end of their respective seasons to discuss the future and check in to see how they feel things are going. Those aren't conversations that happen during the season, Moos said, “unless there's a question about recruiting or scheduling. This will give us a chance to have a long visit and chart our course.”
Moos noted that last year's end-of-season meeting wound up yielding a staff shake-up, with assistant coach Jeff Hironaka being reassigned to an operations role and Ray Lopes being hired as a new assistant.
Bone said after WSU's season-ending 64-62 loss to Washington in the Pac-12 tournament that he's not concerned about his job status.
“I think we’ve done a good job and decisions will be made, whether it’s this year or next year or the following year,” said Bone, who has three years remaining on a 7-year contract. “It’s out of my control, so I’m not going to worry about things that are out of my control. Just going to keep doing the best I can.”
Bone would be owed $2.55 million if terminated this season.
I seriously doubt they would let him work for 2 weeks before firing him. WSU beat UCLA and USC to finish the regular season likely saving his job.
-

I don't think you understood what it originally meant. Also, everyone on ching's list has accomplished more than Jim ever did.

ha, that's a pretty slthy article.

The only two guys on Chings list that didn't fit that criteria at their current school are Tubby & Sendek

Bennett technically came from a high major and Dawkins was an assistant.

Heath also came from a HM but his success was from a MM. Actually other than being young I'm not sure that Heath or Bennett qualified as SLTH hires for their current schools. Heath was fired and Bennett came to UVA fresh off of an NIT appearance. Both hires had some measurable risk attached.
Also why would any AD willingly bring Bennettball to their campus? That style of play is horrible for interest and attendance.

Nit-picking. Point still stands.
-
My word, if Tubby & Sendek are on the list, when do we add Frank Martin? I guess we have to wait for his 4th year at USC to see.
-
Miles will be dominating this thread in 3 years.
-
Hard to beat Bone. Wazzu is basically the Korean War of Pac 12 hoops.
-
If I was rating from Chings list I would go with the following:
Robinson
Dawkins
Bone
Fox
Bennett
Heath
Sendek and Smith would be off my list.
McCaffery will almost certainly make his debut next season.
The Pac 12 is the currently king of SLTHs and its not even close.
-
Miles will be dominating this thread in 3 years.
Have heard that Miles will get some players i.e :kstategrad:. I miss Frank and his sliminess. :blank:

@CoachMiles: Throwback halftime tweet: GO RAMS!!!

the pac 10 is a very slithey conference. it skates through natl attention because of the west coast, but it's all about student-athletes, 5k gymnasiums and alums in school sweaters.

Travis Ford. 1 tournament win in 5 years. Fifth year of ten year contract.
-
Travis Ford. 1 tournament win in 5 years. Fifth year of ten year contract.
1 tournament win pretty much eliminates him from consideration. 3 appearances in five years totally eliminates him. So does his great recruiting.

He doesn't yet meet the 4 year rule, but he will.
His record is really amazing:
3 years at CU: 36-58 overall, 10-38 Big 12
3 years at Wake: 33-59 overall, 10-39 ACC

I've said it before, but Gaudio really got mumped.

Because the very small contingent of Wake People think they're better, and the majority of the small contingent of Wake people are astounded/pissed that Bzzz has kept his job and cannot figure out how or why.

Wow, how does the "were better" contingent make that argument?
Dino had great classes when he was there and the ACC was much tougher then.

That's really crazy, and its amazing that Bz is getting a 4th year with his record after that. Bz is worse that Wooly.
-
Should clarify, Wake has a small fanbase and but they've always thought they should be better, thus the reason Gino got run . . . they faltered down the stretch in his 3rd season and the fanbase and AD got all butthurt about it. Stupid move in light of hiring Bzzz with his track record.
-
It always seemed like something else was up with Dino other than just slightly underachieving with the boss recruits he brought in. Why is the man still unemployed (in the coaching profession)? A guy who is a great recruiter with high major head coaching experience (and decent success there) and yet he isn't on the sidelines. Suspicious.

you're just racist against italians or whatever shifty eyed darker than your average white ethnicity he is
-
ya, in light of Gottfried's success at NC State I would think someday will take a shot with Dino after the UCLA dominoes start falling

Herb Sendek is a much better example of the Tobacco Road meat peeping syndrome. He was very good there yet they ran him out of town to the point where he took a terrible job.
-

I thought Dino died?
Also, Keno Davis at Providence. Has it been 4 years?
Also, also I feel like the Missouri State coach at Tenn who ascended on the coattails of everyone before him deserves to be on here.
-
Also, Craig Robinson is a horrible coach who's never sniffed success and therefor does not meet the criteria.

Does Rutgers care enough for Mike Rice Jr to make the list? Prolly not
What about Oliver Purnell, doing gods work at Depaul after doing gods work at Clemson for a hundred years?
Billy Kennedy? DQ'd because of als?
Frank Haith and Anthony Grant?
-
I think you should read the thread, fake sugar dick.
but Mike rice would be a nice addition.

Also Billy Kennedy belongs. aTm has regressed big time in a bad conf.

Michigancat, what on earth makes you think that I'm going to do anything you ask or in any way attempt to obey they arbitrary rules of slthdome. STFU you dweeb
-
Kennedy belongs. His ability to be on the bubble nearly every season and not make it until this year (only because of winning the conference tournament) has been pretty amazing.
Mike Rice is on the cusp (see 4 year rule).

Not sure a true slth could string together 3 wins in 3 days. One of those three games would be a 4 point loss in which the team was behind 9 most of the game and never lead.

Ken Bone to return next season
Ken Bone will return as men's basketball coach at Washington State next season.
Bone said Thursday that he had a meeting with athletic director Bill Moos on Wednesday and was told he will lead the Cougars for a fifth season.
Bone had been on the hot seat after the Cougars finished 13-19 overall, and just 4-14 in the Pac-12. It was Bone's first losing season with the team.
Bone is 70-65 in his first four seasons at Washington State, with two last-place finishes in the league.
"There's no doubt we need to win more basketball games," Bone said. "I don't think the players or myself or anyone in Cougar Nation is excited about the number of wins we had."
Bone said he received no specific goals from Moos.
"He didn't say `you have to make the NCAA tournament or win X amount of games," Bone said. "We've just got to get better."
Firing Bone would have been an expensive proposition for Washington State. He has three years left on a contract that pays $850,000 a year, and would have been due a $2.55 million buyout.
Washington State has lost leading scorer Brock Motum and guard Mike Ladd to graduation.
But they return a solid nucleus of DaVonte Lacy, Royce Woolridge, D.J. Shelton and Dexter Kernich-Drew, who all gained valuable minutes this year. Newcomers Que Johnson and Jordan Railey are also expected to contribute.
"I think Royce Woolridge will continue to get better and better," Bone said. "Near the end of the year he played as good as anyone on our team."
"We have a very good foundation, which sounds strange when you are going into your fifth year," Bone said. "But at times you've got to take a step back to go forward."
Johnson, a 6-foot-5 guard from Pontiac, Mich., was an academic casualty this year. But Bone expects him to qualify easily for the coming season.
Bone did not know if there would be any defections from the team, as he had not had meetings with most of the players since the season ended.
"There are always guys looking for something different, and the thing is to sit down and have an honest discussion with each guy," Bone said. "In a perfect world they will all be back."
He also did not anticipate any staff changes.
Washington State, which as recently as 2008 reached the round of 16, should be able to compete with most teams in an improving Pac-12, Bone said. He noted the Cougars lost a lot of close games this season. The Cougars also upset conference champion UCLA near the end of the season
"If we can clean some things up, take care of the ball better and get stops at critical times on the defensive end, we can compete with most of the teams in our league," Bone said.

oh man rake, can you imagine getting paid to write that through the tears and laughter?
-
"If we play really well we can compete with most of the teams in our league." That may be the most SLTH quote of all SLTH quotes.
-
IF ...
We can clean some things up
Take care of the ball better, and
Get stops at critical times on the defensive end
THEN ...
We can compete with
most of the teams in our league

I'm willing to bet this came up in the interview process with Dr. Tom. I would be absolutely furious if my basketball coach thought, and even worse, said this for public consumption.
