Title: apple cider
Post by: sys on February 14, 2010, 04:34:55 PM
why don't americans drink more of it?  it was really big around the time of the revolution.  what killed it off?  could it be brought back?  would you buy some if it was prominently available in bars, grocery stores (outside of ks), liquor stores?

it's rough ridin' fantastic, btw.

Ah.

My favorite brand is the dry Woodchuck.  In the UK, the most popular seems to be Strongbow.

the woodchuck stuff is ok.

i prefer continental ciders to uk.  lots of diff. styles (sweet to dry, still to effervescent, diff etoh %s), great with lots of foods, v refreshing cold by itself.  just an incredible, neglected drink.

ha, ha. sys hates woodchuck but doesn't want to just come right out and say it to pete.

i dunno though. i'll try the stuff if it's supposed to be good. don't know what brands/styles to try though. plus, will they be available in mhk? doubtful.

Quote
It is the cheapest way to buy alcohol in the UK. This is pocket money these days. There is no other alcohol category that has the same challenge as white cider. One three litre plastic bottle of white cider contains almost the full recommended weekly alcohol intake for a male drinker" (225 ml, 22.5 units, of pure alcohol content compared with the recommended maximum of 28 units).

love cider.  strongbow on tap is good stuff.

cider factoid:  because of the large amount if european immigrants in santa monica, the pubs all have several ciders on tap.

FYI, super in-cidery posts like this just intimidate out-ciders and make the drink seem even more distant AND unaccessible.

Oh, hey, here's an idea: you and Chingon can go start a salsa/cider thread full of super-complicated and subtly condescending recipes. Should be a good time.

This is absolutely not true. Cider is a significantly superior product than apple juice. It is amazing with a good demerara rum, cinnamon, and just a touch of ginger.. Hot or cold... it's amazing.

cider is not at all inaccessible.  just pour and enjoy.  one of the greatest alcoholic beverage ever devised.  and also a great way to get in touch with your culinary heritage (vis a vis colonial america - no idea if your genetic ancestors were part of the great pan european cider drinking populace).

helpful hint: use lager yeast instead of champagne yeast.
