Some friends got me a ticket. I've "been around the block" when it comes to attending athletic events, but incredibly never been to "The Phog". Just wondering what I should expect. How awesome is it, on a scale from awesome to even more awesome? Can you just feel the history? I'll be in the student section, will people be mean? I'll have an offensive amount of Q@'s crap on, should I be worried?
-
kinda like a rundown version of Ahearn
-
have you ever had sex with a midget?
-
Lot's of old people. Lot's of 'em. If you think no one stands up and cheers at the octagon, just wait. Probably the oldest fan base in America.
-
If you like the smell of burnt popcorn and urine you'll enjoy the beating the q@s will take.

Don't be "worried" but it won't be fun. I went in 04 for football, they were disinterested and it wasn't fun. A win probably would be fun, but overall I would say that sitting in the student section would suck.
-
see if you can get into their "secret" room for BIG-money donors and report back.
should be plenty of room since most of them are in jail and/or being prosecuted and/or busy with bankruptcy proceedings

Oh I've sat in the ku student section a bunch of times for football games, never any problems but even when they were sorta good it was ridiculously lame.
Like, horribly, horribly lame.
-
Pretty iffy about the student section thing too. Being a recent grad and a little older now I'm not crazy about dealing with a bunch of 19 year old dorks. Instead of taking the high-road and being the mature one though, I'll probably act like a huge jack ass and video tape the whole incredible experience.
-
It's like walking around in a four story maze. One of the worst venues I've ever been to from a concourse standpoint. The renovation did not go well. Once you figure out the concourse(s) and get to your seat, it's not bad. Really aren't any bad seats in the whole place (or comfortable ones). It's not very loud, the jumbotron thing it utterly pathetic, which is kind of funny. Overall pretty meh.
I can't emphasize this next part enough: Wear short sleeves, it's like 85 degrees in there.
-
Careful getting in the door, if you're wearing emaw gear they might check your id and not let you in. Student section is pretty meh, been there for 3 basketball games and 1 football game against the cats, bunch of rough ridin' pussies. They talk crap under their breath but that's it
-
I would wear a chastity belt. I heard doods like to rape other doods in the student section but they don't call it rape. It's more like a handshake to those guys.
-
Do you like fountain cokes?
How about rodents?

I sat in the student section this year for the football game and it was absolutely horrible. My father in-law was with me and they were pretty rough on the old man. I think they were extra brutal because they were good and we sucked past few years, and the table has turned again. Kind of the "My Daddy left me so I hate everybody" syndrome. Either way I did see a student get carried down the entire length of the stadium stairs covered in his own barf. He was blacked out and probably dieing.

Expect them to throw objects like mini basketballs at you, especially if you become a little animated like I can get during the game.
Also, they (like Duke fans) like to turn around and film you or take pictures of you when you're losing.
I think they do a circle jerk at the quad after the games with the footage/pictures thats similar to Texs A&Ms yell practices.
-
It's basically a bigger version of the Hutch Juco gym.

I'm actually fine with this. Could be fun, whatever.
I'm not a huge fan of having stuff thrown at me but I guess we'll see. This one time, I stopped some buddies from pouring popcorn on this poor ku kids head. He'd been getting hammered the whole game and looked like he was about to cry. BMW if you're reading this, maybe put in the good word for me?

This! Especially the crap and urine smell.

Everyone I know that has gone to a game in the Phield House has had a beverage thrown at them.

Not me. I even went and :emawkid: it up with Wooly and the boys on the bottom concourse by the locker room and then went out on the floor to take some pics. Just make it known quickly that you'll chokeout every [redacted] in there. Kind of like going to prison.

This. ku fans are the least physically imposing fans in the conference.

Sounds like about 95% of the people in this thread haven't been to Allen Fieldhouse since they did over $50 million in renovations. It's the best college basketball venue in the country. Period.
-
If by period, you mean as appealing as a blood-soaked rag, I agree.

I was there in January 2009. I went to Mizzou arena the same year. Personally, I liked Mizzou arena better. What other college basketball venues have you been to that allows you to make such a blanket statement? And what did they spend $50 million on?

You should find that piece of paper with some outdated rules on it that that dood just wasted his money on it. Get it and burn it. Got to intimidate the fans and stuff.

Just pointing out that LSOC needs to update the BMW right-wrong batting average.

i sat 4th row for the cornell game last year and had a pretty good time. :dunno: it's 95% old people and pretty fun to watch them completely ignore the game but tard out when someones steps on their knock off loafs.

Well, looking at this debate the most non-powertardy way possible, which I believe is objectively as possible, it all probably really depends on what your preference is. Do you like the more traditional stuff or the more new shiny stuff? KU fans are obviously going to embrace tradition being that they have a lot. and naturally Allen is just going to give them the biggest throbbing flesh pole ever, and they have no idea how anyone could prefer anything else. Personally I'm probably in the middle but I know a lot of people that would much rather be in a brand new facility. And those that respect ku's tradition but just don't care about it much, like me, just won't appreciate Allen the same way.
So basically, enjoy your crumbling smelly building, I totally get it, but don't go crazy when others don't get what the big deal is.

Someone clearly hasn't been to the YUM Center in Louisville, Kentucky. It shits on the Sprint Center, and it's a college venue.

Perhaps a little. After simple research I discovered how dumb I am. Berate away.
I just watched the UL-Butler game on tv and the announcers kept talking about it being a college venue.

59-55 was pretty fun at Allen. Still LOL when people call Bill Self the best coach in America...he lost to Jim Wooldridge AT HOME. :emawkid:
Pretty sure that was the worst day in the lives of the KU fans around us.
KU student section likes to throw things at opposing fans in their section. Usually it's just wadded up newspaper, but be aware.

What part about $50 million in renovations don't you grasp? Everything in the building is practically brand new.

Pump your brakes chief, I'm on your side. What did they spend the 50 mil on? Honestly would like to know. I fully understand the value in keeping a place like that alive. I love that kind of stuff and I'm pumped to check it out twice (just got UT tix) this year.

went to 59-55 after buying some of the unclaimed GA student tickets they always resell. got there bout 10 min b4 tipoff with my dad and both of us in full kstate gear had no issue sitting about 15th row back right in the middle of the students. the whole thing was completely underwhelming and not intimidating at all.
