Title: GIVE a penny, take a penny
Post by: j rake on December 01, 2010, 03:48:35 PM
My entire adult life, I have left behind pennies and nickels at the register. It's not uncommon for me to leave behind dimes, and in rare moments of generosity I'll contribute a quarter to the cause. "Thanks," I'll tell the cashier, before I walk out the door without taking my change. But anymore? It's all give. There's never any take. GAPTAP has turned into a tip jar, and I'm easily down $50 lifetime. I can't recall the last time I've had the opportunity to take. (I never ask, I feel it's the job of the cashier to offer.)

Anyways, I was at the gas station earlier and bought a bunch of crap. Total: $4.03. Handed the cashier a $5 bill. Then I glanced down to GAPTAP, then back at the cashier, then down to GAPTAP, then back at the cashier. This was a perfect GAPTAP opportunity, and there was about $1's worth of change in the GAPTAP—tons of pennies and also a few nickels.

"Out of $5?" the cashier says.

I reach into my pockets and couldn't produce any change.

He then proceeded to give me 97 cents.

Nine dimes. One nickel. Two pennies.

It doesn't feel natural to reach my hand into a tray of pennies.

Giving pennies feels like charity. Taking them feels like theft.

Some gas stations make you sign receipts. It slows things up.

Some gas stations won't even let you use a card for under $5.  Not QT though, and they always just round up a few pennies for you. (I appreciate getting back 3 quarters rather than 2 quarters, 2 dimes, and 3 pennies.  I hate any change other than quarters.)  Plus, no signature needed under $25.

sounds like the process would have been sped up had you have taken the 3 pennies instead of making that person give you 97 cents back.  (https://goemaw.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.thedailyscrapper.com%2Fforum%2Fimages%2Ftds%2Fsmilies%2Fsmiley_emoticons_my2cents.gif&hash=66488fd8287f70b3fbe410e3fd41254fc289c244)

I often see people reach over and empty the tray to help pay for things.  Usually cigs.

That said, the people that work in the gas station in my town use the tray to my benefit a lot, and more than just 3 or 4 cents.  Just yesterday the lady took out 8 cents just so she could give me a crisp $10 back in change.

8 CENTS!!!!

Not illegal, but Visa, Master Card etc. generally get  :chainsaw: at stores that post minimums, which are a blatant violation of the agreements with Visa, Master Card etc.

It's usually just the mom and pop type of gas stations.  They get charged like $1.50 everytime they run a card so some businesses don't think its worth their time/money to do it on anything less than 5 bucks.  Kinda like taking out $5 on another bank's ATM, I'm not paying $4 in fees to pull out $5.

Yeah, but it violates their agreements with the cards.  Sometimes car dealers will try to put a max on people trying to buy cars with a credit card, which is also a violation of their agreement.

Doesn't pretty much every gas station put a maximum on credit cards purchases now?  I know Dillons and QT both cap it at like $125 per transaction, anything above must be split into multiple transactions.

This is literally one of only a handful of times I've used cash there — like, ever.

Go figure. Two nights earlier, same cashier, the woman ahead of me bought a box of chocolates. It rang up at $5.44. She reaches into her change purse and only has a $5 bill, a dime and a few pennies. She starts to get flustered and tells the cashier she'll have to go out to her car. I told the woman that I'd put her chocolates on my card and she could just give me the $5.

"That was nice of you," the cashier said.

Yeah, it was, bitch. But go ahead and give me 99 cents back and then try to break up the awkwardness with your stupid, "Oh, that celery smells good" comment.

there is a gas station that i frequent close to my house that i probably visit once a day; sometimes twice. i am almost always in a hurry, which is fine, because it's usually not that busy and i can get right in and right out. i have done it this way for more than a year now. but the new cashier who works mornings is up to no good with his slow-down tactics, and despite his newness, i think he has caught on to my generous GAPTAPing - and is using it for his own personal gain.

when i'm owed MORE than 25 cents (i'll almost always stick around for the quarters), this guy suddenly becomes the laziest...slowest...clumsiest...cashier the world has ever seen. he will open the drawer, place my $1 bills in the cash register ever so slowly, and then he will begin counting the change, fumbling the change, losing count of the change. then he will begin "assisting" another customer, and he will walk away from the cash register...only to return to the cash register, where he begins the process of counting change back to me once again.

he knows i don't want to wait and wait for 30 cents, or 42 cents, or whatever the amount happens to be. so he stalls until i decide to walk out the door.

then, as part of his scam, he pockets my change* instead of putting it in the GAPTAP where it belongs.

*i'm speculating.

I used to work at Quick Cats when I went to school at good ol' K-State. We had a GAPTAP that got quite a bit of action, not really sure why, but it did. There was this weird rough rider that would come in every night and buy whatever he could with the money and take whatever was left over. I told the guy to get lost one night, and my boss freaked out on me. So, I had to watch that skeezeball come in and mooch off the generosity of people like j rake (passive aggressive as he seems to be with the GAPTAP) every single shift I worked. It was infuriating.

i was never a big fan of the quik cats (there is no 'c' btw) when i was at k-state, but i was a frequent cats' den visitor (student union). do you recall the weird rough rider's biggest purchase with GAPTAP money? i'm curious if it ever exceeded $1.

also, i've always wondered* if the GAPTAP resets at midnight, or at the end of a day (non 24/7 stores), or if it ever carries over to the next day. i wouldn't have any issue whatsoever with the graveyard shifter taking what's left and buying a candy bar or something.

*yes, sys, i've always wondered this.

next time in the locally-owned gas station paying cash for a small purchase to save a small business owner a penny, slide the employee a cool, crisp dollar bill, wink at them and tell them to buy themselves a candy bar or something.  walk out knowing you're the better person.

People don't leave money in the GAPTAP out of generosity. They do it because they just don't care about the money. Sounds like this guy didn't have much money, and who cares if he gets a free drink? The people like j rake who don't care have already paid for it.

This is weird...I'd think the worker should have a little dish to refill the GAPTAP and only maintain 15 cents or so, that way it couldn't be pilfered by weridos. I don't think I've really ever seen a GAPTAP with more than that much in it.

Why not go to a grocery store for those things like a normal adult human being?

i really hope sys doesn't return to this thread, because he's going to murder me, but...

i work from home. when i work, i eat. a lot. i eat and eat and eat and eat. i will make a trip to the kitchen, grab a handful of chips, return to my office, sit down, sit back up, return to the kitchen, grab another handful, etc, etc. It doesn't have to be a snack. It can be anything. Lunch meat, yogurt, bagel bites, peanut butter crackers, soda, orange juice, anything. whatever is in my fridge or in my cupboards will be gone when the day is over, and if not then, the next day.

in a desperate attempt to maintain my weight and not become a fat blob, i try to limit how much food i keep in the house. obviously, if i'm having guests over, or if it's a weekend, that's different. i'll get stuff to cook out, or load up a little. but monday-thru-friday, i just can't keep food here. that means MULTIPLE trips to the gas station and grocery store per day and per week. this is normal for me and i've been doing it since i lived at k-state, when i would regularly go to dara's fast lane two or three times per day; or to wal-mart or HyVee multiple times per day (i lived close); in between writing papers, or doing homework, or whatever.

obviously, i will change someday if i have a family or kids (i'll keep food in the house and will let my kids eat and eat and eat until they become OBECE!), but for now, this works just fine...costly as it is.

just an FYI, brushing your teeth frequently and/or rinsing with mouth wash is the single-best way to avoid overeating.

Did you try dumping the extra GAPTAP money in the register or keeping it behind the counter to give out as needed?

I got a free drink from the GAPTAP one time. I just brought the drink up to the register and the clerk said it's my lucky day because some chump just left a dollar bill in the GAPTAP. It was only one time, but then again, I don't really frequent gas stations.

I remember him being able to get a pack of gum one time. Not like the super fresh breath kind, but a pretty elite bubble gum if I remember correctly (He usually just bought as many blow pops as the GAPTAP would allow). So, it wasn't quite a dollar, but I'm pretty sure it was around 75 cents. Good call on the spelling btw, I knew there was something weird about the spelling, but I didn't care enough to look it up and I also didn't want to misspell it incorrectly and look like an even bigger dumbass.

j rake, i'm the same way!  i keep very minimal food in the house, or else i'm just stuffing my face 24/7.  if i feel like cooking, i go to the store and get what is needed for what i'm going to cook, and that's it.

if a store doesn't have gaptap (say a resturant or maybe best buy or something), i either throw away the pennies or i drop them on the ground as soon as i'm outside.

what's contradictory is that i get annoyed when change isn't offered to me after paying for something. so like, two days ago, Taco Bell drive thru, I was owed four cents back. The girl at the window says, "do you want your four cents?"

i thought, OF COURSE! (even though i chucked the gross pennies out the window seconds later).

Rake, I've worked from home all day today (usually every day but let's just use today as an example).  Worked all morning to a stopping point, went to the gym, came home and had a low-calorie G2, (from my own gatorade fuel bar) showered and had a sandwich for lunch.  Have worked since without eating, and will soon grill a non-spoiled chicken breast to pair with some pasta.  Just stop rough ridin' eating food in your house between meals and going through taco bell drive-thrus and getting gas station snacks.

i can't explain it, but there is just something about getting in the car and driving to the gas station, walking around inside, and picking out a random item or three - usually something from the previously noted list - and then coming back home, getting on the computer, and enjoying the treats and/or drinks while i work. i understand it is not cost effective (individual items are more expensive), but it is a nice escape and breaks up the day a little. i do other things to break up the day too (play hoops, work out, etc), but gas station food hits the spot for me.

btw - i'm watching this clemson-SMU game right now, and am planning to go to the gas station to get 2 for $2.22 diet mtn dews in between this game and the next.
