Post by: mcmwcat on November 30, 2010, 07:20:35 AM
shoot the open or semi-guarded 3

no more ball faking taking 1 or 2 dribbles and shooting the open or semi-guarded 15 to 17 footer.  you are better than this

Making some mid range j's can eventually help draw the help D off the bigs, helping to free up looks down low.

I have no prob with this.

Did everyone else get all EMAWy when he did the little Denis'esque runner in the lane?  I mean, it wasn't as good as Denis but I still got pretty emotional.

omg, me too.  Spradler did this the other night against texas so.  He either drove or it was in transition, there were two jyc’s basically standing on the blocks with two defenders, doc hesitates like he might stop and the ghost of denis slapped him on the back of the head doc realized “just get it to the rim” and he floated one up – bricked it – and jamar or someone put it back.  I wept.

hitting 3s does this.  getting caught in the midrange area makes it harder to feed the bigs.

you could argue that hitting the midrange after going past a flying defender might open you up for better looks from 3 :dunno: => defense might be hesitant to come flying at you

If Jake is hitting from the top of the arc, this will not effect who is guarding Curt or Freddy on the block.  However, drive to the FT line and pull up, and they may slide up to pick jake up, freeing up the big on the block.

+1

Defensive schemes against us are going to keep calling for doubling down on our bigs. KU did it so well last year and that blueprint hasn't gone anywhere, in other words we've shown little offensive capacity to do well against it. We've got to hit jumpers, 3s or 2s, then teams may move away from this scheme.

In the end, our offense is mostly created by what we do on defense, so IMO Frank should just keeping coaching them up on D, extra JYD, and we'll get more transition O. We're just not a half court, walk it up team and never will be so long as Frank is around. So don't expect efficient motion offense or even high half court BBIQ all the time. Defend like mad + crash the glass = everything else will be fine.

shooting a basketball from the area called the 'lane' is not a midrange jumper.  shooting from an area between what is called the 'lane' and the 'arc' is considered a midrange jumper.  shotting the ball from an area outside what is called the 'arc' is worth 3 points.

What is considered a lay-up?

So, a 14 foot jumper in the paint is not midrange, but one out of the paint is?

Nicname is of the opinion that the college 3 should be the same as the NBA 3.  Making the mid-range jumper valuable in the college game while better preparing players for the NBA game.

The midrange jumper off the dribble is still valuable in the college game.

how valuable are shots behind the 3pt arc?

how valuable are shots behind the 3pt arc?

If Jake was giving up a wide open 3 to take mid-range shots, that would be one thing.  But as expected, teams are guarding Pullen tight, so he's got to have other options.  Teams are also well aware of his ability to drive to the rim, so they usually have help available at the rim.  That leaves mid-range jump shots, which he has also shown an ability to hit.  Now, if teams have to step out and guard Pullen on the 12-15 feet jump shot, post players or other teammates are going to be open.  All of this fits together IMHO, making jump shots of the dribble a good option in our offense.

have seen him pass up too many open 3s.  hopefully it's just an attempt to get other players involved when the opponent is weak and it's early in the season.

Remember when Denis would get his defender airborne and then dive into him taking a wild three but never get called for an offensive fould because of his adorableness?  Jake copied that amazing move a couple times last year but seems to have abandoned it now that his latin friend has taken his talents to Jerusalem.

Denis is worshiped so much by his new community that they have asked him to lay in the manger for their live nativity scene.
