Title: @WSU
Post by: bigDcat on November 29, 2010, 04:13:57 PM
Upset of the Week (per ESPN):

Washington State over Kansas State, Friday: Kansas State is more physical and is probably a tougher team than Washington State. But Wazzu has a skilled scorer in Klay Thompson and two players -- Thompson and Faisal Aden -- averaging at least 23 points a game. If they can knock off K-State in this Big 12/Pac-10 Hardwood series game, the Cougars can send notice to the rest of the Pac-10 to take them seriously. Look, Washington State rarely gets a ranked nonconference team not named Gonzaga to come to Pullman. This is the Cougs' shot to make a name for themselves and the place will be rocking. Beating rival Gonzaga or even doing well in the Diamond Head Classic in late December won't resonate as much as a win over the Wildcats.

Remember when Klay Thompson was the next big thing in the Pac 10, then went 5-15 against us, and Wazzu went 6-12 in the Pac10?

Exactly.  Their logo is totally derivative of ours, they have an uppity in-state rival with a track around their field.....Kazzu - Wazzu......might as well consider them a sister school.

Will be able to compare Washington State to K-State and Pullman to Manhattan on Friday when I see the Cats for the first time live this year.  Full comparison to come.  All I know is former Michigan and Arizona State basketball coach Bill Frieder once called Pullman the "garbage dump" of the Pac 10 upon his first visit.

I've been to Pullman and thought it was quite nice.  Much better than western/coastal Wash.  It was actually sunny in Pullman and didn't rain the entire time I was there!

It definitely would suck to be a Cougs fan as they lose pretty much all the time in every sport.  They do, however, have a pretty nice party scene going on with the University of Idaho being located less than ten miles away in Moscow.  I worked with a couple guys who went to both and they both talked about combo-u parties being incredible.

1) Saying WSU has played no one is an understatement; they have one of the worst SOSs of any  BCS team in the country to this point.

2) They have a couple guys that can shoot.  Thompson and JUCO transfer Aden are both 20 points scorers, hitting 37% and 42% from 3 respectively.  They have no other guards that are shooting threats outside those two.

3) Their bigs are average, and one of their best bigs, Casto, will just be coming back from an injury.  A couple (Motum and Simon) will step out and shoot threes.

4) Despite playing terrible teams, they are not a good Oboarding team, nor do they go to the FT line much.  This would indicate they are jump shooting team, both inside and outside the arc.  They are one of the best teams in the country at 2PT% and a solid 3PT%, but again most of that is two guys.

5) Hard to tell defensively based on who they played, but if last year is any indication teams shoot the ball well against them.  They did a decent job of not allowing Oboards or allowing teams to get to the FT line, but they allowed EFG% of over 50%, teams shot well from both 2PT ad 3PT against them, and they don't force many steals.

This is a finesse Pac-10 team that if the Cats come to play at all we should beat comfortably.  I really don't think they will be prepared for what we bring based on who they've played so far.  The only worry is if we allow Thompson/Aden too many open looks OR if we get an officiating crew that calls the game really tight, but like I said, WSU hasn't shown to be a team that draws many fouls.

I've really been looking forward to this game for a year,'' Bone said. "It can test you in so many ways. They're similar to Washington, and we need to be better against teams like that. I just wish we were going with healthy bodies. I've known about this game since I arrived here so I haven't experienced trying to get a home-and-home with an elite program. I'm assuming it's going to be very difficult based on the history of scheduling at Washington State. Those teams coming here are few and far between

Once again we are another schools Super Bowl.

Preemptive non-upset alert: Tomorrow's K-State/Wazzu game is a toss-up. Resist the urge to be stunned and/or shocked if Wazzu wins.

kenpom is punishing us for not beating James Madison, Presby, and Texas Southern bad enough.

...or maybe not overvaluing wins against mediocre vt and zag teams?  :driving:

Top 50 wins by 16 and 17 are still Top 50 wins by 16 and 17.

Not beating bad teams badly and not having great kenpom index numbers are what is hurting us now.  The bad game against Presby is probably costing us the most in kenpom's system.

Gonna be fun to watch this one - west coast refs like a polite game - could spell trouble for a hard-nosed team like our Catz, but our depth could negate that.
Here's an extremely accurate and incredibly insightful scouting report from a WSU site, cougcenter.com : http://www.cougcenter.com/2010/12/2/1851950/wsu-vs-kansas-state-scouting-the-ksu-wildcats

Second, this is a game where the midrange jumper could play a huge role. The Cougs have proved exceptionally adept at that shot this year with Thompson and Faisal Aden leading the way. With great pressure on the perimeter and shot blockers waiting around the basket, the 15-footer can be a powerful weapon.

This is a game the Cougs can win. But they're going to have to do some things we know they can do but maybe haven't shown enough of this year to do it. Honestly? I think their best chance rests in the referees calling a tight game. If they can get K-State out of what they do best -- fluster their opponents by harassing them physically -- much of KSU's physical advantage melts away, as many of their players aren't particularly skilled.

i can almost guarantee the refs will call it tight.  fudge

In fact, when KSU's guards penetrate, they often will just throw it up in the hopes that a rebounder is left unboxed (is that a word?) out when the weakside help rotates to contain penetration
