Title: Zag Stats Thoughts...
Post by: Acceleration Man on November 22, 2010, 01:13:47 PM
...before heading into tonight's game.

The Zags have 10 players averaging 10 or more minutes per game. We have 9. With the addition of Kelly, that makes us about even as far as bench depth, where this is usually an advantage.

Almost all their scoring comes from Gray, their 6'-5" point (25.7 ppg) and their bigs (the next 5 leading scorers!).

Their bigs are big (including 2 7-footers).

They will kill us at the FT line if we hack them too much down low (average over 73% as a team).

Going by the stats, it seems as if the key for us is to show up and play Martin-style aggressive D on their gaurds (especially Gray) in order to limit their scoring and make the entry pass difficult (limiting their other scoring options while also lessening the likelihood of committing a ton of fouls). Additionally, when Monninghoff is in for the Zags, we'll need to respect this 6'7" forward's outside shot, since he's 7-11 this year. Our bigs are going to have to play smart and not commit a bunch of dumb fouls.

This is probably why we lose. Our Bigs will pick up a million fouls. Wally and Asprilla may foul out before the first half is over.

Gray is legit. Real physical, gets a lot of his points driving to the bucket and drawing fouls.

one of their guards is merriewetherish.  can't shoot at all.

doubt if martin lays off him though, not in line with his defensive philosophy.

see our defense on Balbay as an example.    maybe not since he's a PG
