Title: Free throws
Post by: AlwaysEMAW on November 19, 2010, 03:42:41 PM
I know this is talked about a lot, but if I was Presby's coach and only down 4 with 3 minutes left I'm gonna start fouling the crap out of K-State. Thank God they didn't because I think they had a shot to win if they did.

What do you guys think?

How long until we lose a game because of poor free-throw shooting???   :users:

I bet it's either Monday or Tuesday

If so, it will be because we didn't do other things well.  FT will just be a convenient excuse.

When will you be able to pinpoint a loss on exactly one factor with 100% certainty?

I bet it's never.  :users:

I'm sure it will be a big factor, if we lose.

But seriously, how long til a team deliberately starts going after us, a-la  hack-a-shaq?

As far off as Wally was on his FT's I was thinking the exact same thing.

Our FT% is pathetic, but players usually don't become better free throw shooters. I would take a player who shoots a ton of free throws at a low percentage over a player who shoots a few free throws at a high percentage, though.

I agree with the thrust of the analysis. However, it contains a number of stupid, blatant mistakes. First, the tables show Frank Martin being in his fifth season when it's only his fourth. So the first row in the tables should be labled "Wooldridge" and the second row should be labled "Huggins." Second, he says this:

Quote
Suppose you shoot 670 FTs and you shoot them at an average rate of, say, 70%. That means you will miss 201 FTs. But, suppose you shoot 1,098 of them at 65%. That means you will miss 714 !! That’s over 500 more misses than an average D1 school.
… and that’s assuming 65% - not 50.6%.

His first calculation is correct, but then he somehow gets the second calculation backwards. 714 is the number of shots you'll make. 384 is the number you'll miss.

I noticed that to.  If you scroll down, the writer is the first comment and he acknowledges his mistake.
