Title: mini_FANalysis post-exhibition minutes breakdown
Post by: kso_FAN on November 09, 2010, 09:08:43 AM
Combos:
Pullen 34
Irving 18
Sprads 12
Russell 9
Ninety-five 8
McGruds 5
Southwell 5
Myles <5

Pullen will clearly get the bulk of the minutes here.  Irving is probably the next most trusted (besides McGruds, who will also get Swing minutes), but Frank will go with the "who is practicing best" mantra opposite Pullen.  Sprads/Russell will fight it out for minutes when Irving is not out there.  I've seen nothing from Myles to say that he will get more than spot duty, or thrown in there when Frank gets really ticked at the rest of the young guards.  The total there is more than 80, but things usually work out that way when guys don't play at all in games and some of those guys won't play at times.

SD reminded me of Ninety-five and his possibilities which only makes this more difficult for combos.  I threw Ninety-five in there.

Swing:
McGruds 15
OJ 15
Samuels 8
Southwell 5

It will be interesting to see how Frank uses the swing spot.  We'll see some 3 guard line-up like the Washburn game where McGruds or Southwell will get minutes here, or we'll see OJ or Samuels get minutes against bigger teams.  And as expected, OJ will become the new Meri and the fans will complain about Frank playing him so much.  Bank on it.

Posts:
Kelly 23
Judge 20
Asprilla 20
Samuels 12
JHR 8

With plenty of options, we'll see Frank use multiple combos of these guys.  I think JHR will be the least used again b/c the other guys are simply more skilled IMHO.  But against certain teams JHR will get those energy minutes he often brings in spurts.  Kelly will likely be most utilized and it will be interesting to see what happens with Judge, Asprilla, and Samuels.  I'm thinking Judge will still have plenty of foul prone games that will limit his minutes.

I read somewhere, I think it was a website called goEMAW.com, that Irving was going to be sent packing because we have too many scholarship players and he was the suckiest.  Would be weird if he played the second most minutes at guard on a top 5 team and then got cut.

Almost as weird as our senior starting 3 getting run or our conference 6th man of the year getting eye injured to the bench.

What are the chances that Ninety-Five gets his name on the back of his jersey before that valedictorian/cross country runner/royalswild's best friend guy?

It is really hard to take an educated guess on the combos not named Pullen.  In the 2 exhibition games McGruds, Sprads, and Irving all played 17-20 MPG.

will not complain about VicOJ if he can consistently hit open jumpers.

Agree. It won't feel like 4on5 whenever OJ is in like it was with energy.

I anticipate the flip flopping as early as halftime on Friday when people remember that he can't shoot.  I realize that this isn't really needed of 'Tay, it won't stop people from constantly bitching about it.

i really wish whatever Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!) is opposite of pullen learns to play some f'ing defense so jake doesn't have to chase around whomever is the other team's best ball handler/best 1 or 2 all f'ing game.  if irving and sprads could be combined into one player that would probably do it.

I want Jake guarding the other team's best player, provided that player is roughly Pullen's size.  Turns out that the game of basketball requires you to play both offense and defense.  Weird, huh?

So you would rather Jake defend the other team's best player rather than someone else who could do just as good of a job?  Wouldn't you rather Jake be able to conserve energy for the offensive end?

Great breakdown.

If we're getting solid post scoring, and we don't need Irving to score a lot, I can see him getting minutes.  But if Jake's cold, the bigs are missing bunnies, and/or we're not getting any production from the wing, I can see Tay's minutes go down as we'll need someone in there that can shoot.

So I agree with the breakdown, I just think on any given night, we could see Sprads and Irving flip flop those minutes.

If Jake can't play defense than I want Jake to sit on the bench.  Seems like a pretty good place to conserve energy, amirite?

Never said he couldn't play defense, dumbass.  But it would be better if he didn't have to chase around the team's best player the entire game.

Valid point, but your best perimeter is your best perimeter defender.  There is not doubt that will be Pullen as it was last year.  I don't disagree that it will be great if one of the other guards can step up and take some of that pressure off Pullen at times, but just like BYU last year, when we need someone stopped outside, Pullen will be the one to do it.

it would just be really super neat if our f'ing 2 would provide something....anything...worth a sh*t on the court.  and gruds won't get enough combo minutes to do this.  it's too much to ask sprads to be good at defense and i highly doubt he'll be capable offensively, russell sucks and irving's defense is entirely overrated.  our only hope is 95.
