This is what Ron Prince finished in his last year at K-State, with 2 conference wins.
Will we surpass this record this year? Based on what we saw tonight, KU and North Texas appear to be our most winnable games remaining, and they're both on the road. OSU, Baylor, Mizzou, and Texas have the offensive ability to do at least what Nebraska did to us. Maybe we can win out at Colorado?
Calming the waters, indeed.

My worry is that KU will win with the bye week prep and then we've got NTU. I'm not sure we can beat any of the other teams.

5-7, take it to the bank.
Cats d was crushed and no qb play from queso. I did love the highlights of Cam having fun at Auburn.
-
6-6 is the ceiling.
-
We'll finish 7-5, maybe 8-4. Really.
-
TEams with mobile qb's and decent olines will destroy us.

We've faced 3 of these and won. Right?

nebraska is a really complete team on both sides of the ball. nothing was exposed last night about KSUQUATZ that we didn't already know about. i still think we can be pretty decent and get a few more wins.

I'm with you. Last night we were horrible, but looked worse because of the domino effect of sucking. Pretty amazing meltdowns happening here though..
-

Yeah. When most people calm down (around Monday or so) they'll come back to this. I can't believe everyone was so surprised by how that game went. :dunno:

Was hoping for a little more "bend" from the defense.

Last night showed us we are light years from being a Top 10 caliber team. Not even close.
But it also showed me NU is probably the best team in the league. Granted, other teams will have better schemes/players to limit NU, but as much as the team speed killed us last night, NU's fronts on both sides of the ball killed us. NU did not have to load the box much to stop Thomas, their LBs have a ton of speed to make plays, and their secondary allows them to cover man and not allow teams to throw with much success. Offensively, they swallowed up our smallish front, got bodies on LBs, and forced our defensive players (LBs and Ss) to make one on one tackles in space. We failed miserably, though some of that is correctable b/c we often took terrible angles.
Simply put, there are few other teams that will present to us the same talent level and speed issues as NU. Sure, lots of other teams have good players here and there, but not the collection that NU does IMHO. Including UT.
So I expect that the rest of the year...
- we'll get blown out at least one more time, maybe twice, but not as bad as last night.
- we'll win a game we don't expect to win.
- we'll beat a couple teams "we're supposed to beat". UNT, KU, and CU likely candidates, but there are others.
- we'll finish 3-5/4-4 in the league.
- overall it will be a successful season.
None of this makes getting throttled last night suck any less, but things will get better. Again, we aren't even close to what we hoped, possibly competing for a North title, but we aren't as bad as we showed last night either. Similar (but not as good) to K-State teams circa 94-96 ish.
All this JMHO.

Who knew Pelini was such a genius compared to Snyder? :dunno:

whoever graded his SAT in high school

Wow, it is good to see at least a few people haven't lost their crap over last night in terms of perspective. Count on that Nebraska team making nearly every team in the big 12 this year look like complete garbage.

This sounds pretty reasonable, if the team doesn't implode. The nub played a really good game last night, and with their talent level, combined with the fact that their strengths on offense are our weaknesses on defense, it got ugly. I still wonder how things would have turned out had we been able to score a TD on the 4th down drive early and put a little mental pressure on Martinez to make plays. We might have at least kept it respectable. But since we couldn't execute on offense, and our D is so slow/misaligned, they got up early and Martinez got really comfortable.
Now if we lose to KU next week, I'll start to meltdown. :users:
-

I'm more worried about the defensive players standing in the wrong place and running the wrong direction issues. I think many teams remaining on the schedule might pose identical problems in those areas.

I don't think this team will quit. We'll see.
If we had scored early a) we would've still likely lost but b) it would've been much more competitive.
And losing to this year's KU team, even with our problems, will deserve a meltdown from anyone. I think the game will be ugly and I don't think we'll blow them out, but we should win that game.

Like I said, I know for a fact we put in quite a bit of new stuff defensively for this game, not only with 3 safeties, but in our base sets as well. We were more agressive. I think these adjustments not only didn't work, they blew up in our faces. I think you'll see us go back to a more bend but not break scheme we used through the first 4 games where we still had plenty of problems, but were much more sound.

What exactly is a "bend but don't break" scheme? It seems like it means "suck but then stop sucking when the opposing team gets to the red zone".
In technical terms, what are we talking about here?

Isn't it more like, "Suck while praying the other team will shoot themselves in the foot before they score?" I don't think "stop sucking" has ever been part of the deal, not even temporarily.

Bend but don't break isn't a strategy as much as it is just a description of a poor defense that attempts to just not give up the big play in hopes of the other team beating themselves (fumble, penalty, turnover etc.) It is probably one of the most heart wrenching things to watch as a fan.

Don't take a lot of chances. Safe stunts and blitzes, keep routes in front.
Last night in our scheme we allowed NU to isolate Martinez in many one on one situations and he beat us. Some of this b/c he is simply a better player, some b/c we took terrible angles and run fits. Some of this b/c we took some more chances and we tried some different alignments that we thought would work to contain Martinez. It didn't and in fact I think it made things worse b/c our guys weren't comfortable with some of the things we ask to do. Specifically they took advantage of Lamur's over agressiveness. We had several sets where his assignment was to spy Martinez and he often ran himself out of the play, outside of Martinez's running lane, easily getting blocks. Harman's fits are the opposite problem, he often gets too far inside the ball, allowing himself to be caved down and opening up a running lane outside of his run fit. Our LBs have similar problems to both of these.
Really, the amount of unsound play was surprising on defense. This is not something we have shown this bad since Snyder has been back. I'm hopeful that the fixable issues can and will be fixed. And I'm thankful that KU has no one that will present the same problems that NU did.

I really hope so, but Bill hasn't won a road conference game in a loooong time. And I think Webb will give us problems.

With the problems we have, we're probably worse off if KU plays Pick.

I was sure Nosejob was the only poster that could cheer me up this morning, but _Fan has calmed my waters.

I hope people understand I'm not trying to say we are great and last night was an aberation, b/c we are not. But most/many college football teams have lots of problems and we will win more games. We aren't playing a ton of teams on our schedule much better than UCLA/ISU/UCF. We'll win some of those games to teams like that, and we'll lose some of those as well. At least 2, probably 3 of our remaining opponents are worse than those teams as well. There is hope even with as bad as last night was, that's all I'm saying.
And if that's :powerespect: I don't really care.

Hartman's angle to T-Magic on his breakaway to the south endzone was hilariously bad.
-
Hartman wouldn't know an angle if one hit him in the head. His nickname should be Circle.

This is true. Unfortunately often times Lamur's weren't much better.

Looked like Lamur wasn't even trying on the passing TD. He slowed up at about the 35 when he had an angle on the receiver.

I found that enjoyable. It's the little things in a game like that which keep me coming back for more.

Oh, I have no allusions of grandeur ... but that doesn't negate the many head-scratching and ass-aching moments from last night, and it's nice to have a voice of reason to keep things in perspective.

I hope you're right, _FAN.
However, my concern is that we may have already won our close games with UCLA and UCF and Iowa State, and now the pendulum swing to the other side especially with teams with athletes on offense getting a blueprint for how to exploit our undersized, slow defense. I hope I'm wrong.

The thing is, no coach needed last night to have a blueprint for how to exploit our undersized, slow defense. We didn't learn anything new about our team last night. Our weaknesses are glaring.
I did learn a hell of a lot about Nebraska, they're a top 5 National Championship type squad. I had no idea how complete that team is until I saw them play last night.

rough ridin' A. We don't have to listen to 'CC4Q has led us to a 4-0 record so far' anymore.

I think we have a pretty good chance at actually being a good football team next year. The recruiting is getting better, although it had nowhere to go but up. If we could get a couple of Juco Safeties and LB's I think our defense could be almost serviceable and assuming Tuggle or Pease are decent our offense should be good.
-
This is similar to KU fans who said 0-12 after KU got beat by NDSU. It's one game, folks.
-
Hartman was so abused last night I actually felt bad for his ugly face.

We'll finish 7-5, maybe 8-4. Really.

I agree with much of this, but what doe this mean "Similar (but not as good) to K-State teams circa 94-96 ish" ?
I get the "but not as good" part, because everyone of those teams would CRUSH this team. What is the similarity you are citing? :dunno:

we can always rely on FAN to "calm the waters", so to speak, on KSU bbs's. BITB, folks.

DAMMIT!
Its a matter of degree. I new we had a bad run defense, I didn't think it was one of the worst though. I though we were slightly below average!
PLUS
I am not 100% sure Nub is quite that good yet (top 5 Nat'l Champ team).
-
Well, they were #7 this week and look like the favorite to win the Big 12. They win the conference and they will have a real good chance to play for the MNC.

this.
we play 3 teams of equal or more suckiness (KU, CU, UNT) out of the remaining 7 and all three of those are on the road. the rest of the teams are better than us at nearly every position. the point is that there is no hope for this team, none. and further there's no hope for this program under snyder. we have nothing on the roster or in the recruiting class that will make any kind of difference (gmafb with tuggle, he's garbage). we will not win 7 games moving forward while LHC Bill Snyder is head coach. last year was schedule driven.

I had no idea how complete that team is until I saw them play last night.
congrats on knowing how much we sucked before the game.
i think you missed the point. we all have known we're one dimensional , that CCQ can't throw downfield, and that we can't stop the run. what's new today?
I guess what's new to me is that our defense would be THAT bad. I didn't think our defense would be worse than last years to this degree.
Our crappy run defense just played one of the best teams in the country.
DAMMIT!
Its a matter of degree. I new we had a bad run defense, I didn't think it was one of the worst though. I though we were slightly below average!
PLUS
I am not 100% sure Nub is quite that good yet (top 5 Nat'l Champ team).
I agree with this. Nebraska has the same weaknesses on offense that K-State does. I think that Texas can stop the run, and they will beat Nebraska next week.

UT has given up 500 yds on the ground in their last two games. UCLA didn't do crap in the air but were still able to rush for 260. Nubb shouldn't have much trouble running the ball against UT.

We'll finish 7-5, maybe 8-4. Really.
Yeah. When most people calm down (around Monday or so) they'll come back to this. I can't believe everyone was so surprised by how that game went. :dunno:
Again something said that makes sense. U guys do know we played a legitimate 6th ranked team in the nation!
We're going to ass rape KU. :kstatriot:

Last year we got prison raped one game and then came back the next week and sodomized A+M with a mop handle. Maybe we'll do it again this year. :dunno:

This is what perplexes me the most. We all know we are deficient in talent and outmatched athletically. What I am amazed at is how we are considerably worse than we were last year two years under Snyder and haven't played a road game yet.
I don't care how good Nebraska is. Allowing a team to rush for nearly 500 yards on your home turf is absolutely dumbfounding. That is 1989 bad. That was the worst defensive performance I have ever seen from a Snyder coached team. And again, we haven't even faced a road environment.
I also can't rationalize the impact of losing our only true game changing threat at wide receiver is going to have. This can't be underestimated IMO.
Bottom line for me, is until Snyder can prove he can win a conference game on the road again, I see 6 wins as the absolute best scenario.

I can't wait for KU's D to make DThomas look legit again.
-
you guys are lost.
This is similar to KU fans who said 0-12 after KU got beat by NDSU. It's one game, folks.
thanks Beems, seems like these retards thought we were going to stop the run or something.
we won't play anyone close to being as good as the cornhuskers

I think we're vastly underestimating ku at home.
We'll probably be a 3 point dog. Actually don't know that there legitimately is a game on the schedule we'll be favored in from this point forward.
-
I love how you foooocking retards are taking so much pleasure in our team losing. I wish ball cancer in you all. And some prison rape, too.
I hate watching our team lose, which is why it's time for bill to retire.
Yeah, we should never lose another game again! :pbj:

Maybe! We'll probably have the Pin Stripe Bowl hanging in the balance, so that'll help.
