Title: Snakes Caught Thread
Post by: pissclams on September 28, 2010, 01:02:22 PM
In this thread, list the snakes you have caught.  I'll lead off the thread with the bull snake, caught tons of them.

this one bull snake wrapped itself around my friend's dog's leg and constricted it.  was funny

I caught a baby snake once that was brown, not a garter snake.  Don't know what it was.  I let it go in my yard.  Prolly about a foot long.

A couple weekends ago I caught a ring neck snake about 14 inches long.  I went all Bear Grylls on it.  Pinned it's head to the ground with a stick and then picked it up with my other hand.  Showed it to the daughter and then let it go.  Thought about eating it but wasn't that hungry.

Garter (they will poop on you...gross)
Bull (they hiss like they are scary but are not)
Hog Nose (they live underground or something)
Prairie Rattle Snake (not really caught, more ran over on accident then looked at)

This is all 4 kinds of snakes found in the continental US, I have caught all of them.

the Lampropeltis calligaster, aka, the  prairie kingsnake.  it took me forever to find one of these guys, who are a relative of one of my favorite snakes, the california king.  therefore, the prairie was one of my favorite's too.

Copperhead in SE Oklahoma. Opened the screen door of the cabin and rascal shot right in. We promptly pinned him down and smashed his head with a hammer.

I only caught one of these guys, the ever elusive milk snake.  very cool looking.  red meets yellow, kill a fellow, red meets black, friend of jack.  remember that, it might save your life one day in nicaragua.

My only experience with a copperhead was walking up to one of the greens at Stagg Hill.  I thought it was a stick in the fairway/fringe near the green but as I got closer I realized it was a copperhead.  He was still alive but the foursome in front of us had hatched his head pretty good, he had eaten his last meal.  very pretty snake.

Plucked from it's mother's belly.  Technically mother wasn't "caught" so much as accidentally decapitated in a landscaping mishap.
Other picture in cool science pictures thread.

Had a juvenile copperhead attack a blue/chrome crankbait on Kentucky Lake.   It chased and then struck at the lure for six or seven casts in a row, was fascinating to watch.
