i really want to check out the panama canal.

The logistics of the canal itself are impressive.  The food in Panama is damn near worth the trip in it's own right.  People from all over the world helped build the canal (obviously) and eventually settled in Panama afterwards.  Strong Chinese influence, with obvious local customs mixed in.  Still don't think I would make a trip down there just for the canal or the food though.  It's very difficult/time consuming to see much of the canal and there are probably better food venues in the world the world that offer more easily accessed sites.  If you've never been- Spain is incredible and the Azores are probably my #1 locale in the world.      --> The Azores

i'd do it.  even just a few years ago, you would have had to forgo numerous games.  today, you can watch almost everything, and at least listen to anything you can't see.

imo-- Seeing the world is vastly underrated, but only for those with the right intellect and sense of adventure.  One major litmus test: when you visit a new city, do you (1) try to go to a restaurant or other place that you won't find elsewhere, or (2) do you look for an Applebee's or some other chain that you know?

#1, you'll probably have a great time.
#2,  you are a pedestrian rube, so please do the world a favor and stay at home.

Underrated.

I've enjoyed every trip I've been on, and some of my biggest regrets are trips I didn't take for one reason or another.

GO!

No old person in the history of the world has ever looked back on their life and said, "I wish I had travelled less".

Old man pervis pasco has something to say about that.

But yes traveling the world is vastly underrated.  So far I've only been able to do so through books and film, but there are so many places I'd love to experience.

Jack Kerouac once said he wished he had travelled less, but your point is right on.

I think people who travel enjoy far less stress in their lives than those who don't travel as much.  Have you ever noticed how good looking professional travelers are at the airport?

What about living abroad.

Studied abroad for 5 months during college, LOVED IT, I could probably live a year or two in a place but then come back to the U.S. after that, traveling places you get to see all the touristy type stuff but living in a place you really get to immerse yourself in the culture and learn all the cool little stuff, would LOVE to have a vacation house abroad, anybody want to go halfsies

I have a good friend who grew up in Panama.  If you need any questions answered, fire away and I will forward to the authority on the subject.

The canal is blah.  Kind of like the Glockenspiel.  If you want to see tons of water and smelly people, go to Cedar Rapids.

Bunch of dumbassses in this thread.  Within the boundaries of this state you can literally do ANYTHING you can do any where else in the world.  Save some cash and explore your own backyard...

Interact with Asians?  Hang with the Mung in Garden City or Dodge.

It's Latino culture you're after?  Check out the world famous Fiesta Mexicana at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Topeka each summer.

Deep water fishing?  Look no further than the monster Stripers patrolling the deep channel at Milford Lake.

Large metropolis squalor your bag?   KCK.

Glitz and glamor with high-end shopping? Boom, Leawood.

European heritage?  Lindsburgh might as well be Old Stockholm.  And, don't forget the jewel that is the Kansas City Renaissance Festival.

Rock climbing?  Feast your eyes on the road cuts along I-70 in the Flint Hills.

Exotic Animals?  That one rich guy's private zoo in Salina.

Large public spectacles?  That river deal in Wichita.

....I could on and on.  Fats, there is a WHOLE WORLD out there, and it's all accessible using nothing more than your KDL and a reliable set of wheels!

Has anyone had any experience with "People to People" student trips? My  14 yr old son got a letter for France, Italy, Austria next summer. I believe it's expensive, but I'm considering it. Any input would be appreciated.

Be sure to look up which countries let 14-year-olds drink. He will need this experience for college.

Loved it, LOVED IT.  Lost my virginity...the sleep arrangements were quite liberal.  My folks were sold a bill of goods. LOL  Once we got over there the rules got relaxed....fast.

My advice is this:

1. Tell your kid the reality that heterosexual men who are circumcised are NOT getting aids.  BUT, they could get the herp, so wear a condom.

2.  $20 in Austria goes a LOT farther than it does in France or Italy when you are getting pussy, if you catch my drift.

3.  It's not gay to let an effeminate Italian guy blow you, especially if he doesn't speak'a-tha-engalish, if you know what I mean.

4. This is THE most important advice to give your kid... :eye: symbol does NOT mean the same thing here as it does over there, and when you flash it to a dude across the bar (even if the Cats are on TV), it WILL bring attention that you may not want.

Speaking of rough ridin', the Panama Canal, also known as The Canal of Light, is a magical, romantic place for young lovers.

He will most likely be losing his virginity on that trip but it won't be by choice.  Make sure to instruct him on the proper usage of anal lube.

An excerpt from THE RISE OF TEDDY ROOSEVELT, a biography of the president.

What a life.....

Recrossing the Atlantic in late October, Teddy turned fifteen.  He was now, if not yet a man, then at least a youth of more than ordinary experience of the world. He had traveled exhaustively in Britain, Europe ad the Middle East, visiting their great cities time and again and actually living in some for long periods.  He had plumbed the Catacombs and climbed the Great Pyramid; slept in a monastery and toured a harem; hunted desert jackals on horseback; kissed the pope's hand; stared into a volcano; traced an ancient civilization to its source; and followed the wanderings of Jesus.  He had been exposed to much of the world's greatest art and architecture, was conversant in two foreign languages, and felt as much at home in Arab bazaars as at a German kaffeeklatch, or on the shaven lawns of an English estate.
