It's about to get ugly up in here.......

They did pay him the $2 million retention bonus that he was not due to collect until next June.

yes they are. Something is up on this. Now ku is going to hire a non athletically friendly AD and be a drag on us once the Big 12 dies again.

Lew, Lew, Lew . . . this could have the makings for one of the greatest "what could have been" stories in history.  But instead the egos and the typical ku way of doing business reared its ugly head again.   Always remember, this is a school that names sports venues after convicted felons and defrocked CEO's (potential convicted Felons).

Lew Perkins was nothing more than a morally corrupt CEO, who had no clue when it came to the non-business side of being AD.  The guy did a great job of increasing KU's athletic budget and upgrading facilities, and KU had quite a bit of success while Lew was AD, but his recent coaching hires leave a lot to be desired, and the athletic program as a whole is headed backwards instead of forwards.  Good riddance.

Probably a combination of both.  This was essentially a nice way of telling Lew that he's fired.

I originally thought TG was safe for next season since Lew was leaving so late.  However, given this development, you may be right.  Get a new guy in with time to find the next coach.

I swear to fracking god, if they hire Leach out from under us, my head will explode.

Kansas AD Lew Perkins retires

Associated Press

LAWRENCE, Kan. -- Embattled Kansas athletic director Lew Perkins has retired, a year before he planned to step down.

Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little and Perkins made the announcement Tuesday.

Perkins is 65. He had said in June he would retire in 2011.

Since Perkins arrived from UConn, the Jayhawks have won the NCAA basketball championship and the football team won the Orange Bowl.

But there have also been scandals and embarrassments, including a ticket scam allegedly conducted by staff members that cost the school as much as $3 million.

Perkins has not been implicated in any wrongdoing in the ticket scandal. Sean Lester was named interim athletic director.

ku already has the stigma of being pricks with the way they ran Mangino out of town (2 years removed from Orange Bowl win and COY honors).  NO WAY they can fire Gill after one game and pray to get a decent coach in the door.

BITB could not match this degree of owning ku, could not attract $2million in ad $$ that would compare to what Perkins is doing to that university.  Totally awesome to watch a master at work.

Having Lew would be cool if I had 10 yrs left to live.  You could expect those last 10 years of sports to do some great things.  Problem is that shortly after that crap would fall apart and he would leave us broke and broken which would suck to have to watch for years after.

Perkins took KU's athletic budget from roughly $30 million to $70 million.  That alone is worth $2 million.

Lew perpetuated ku's national rep as being the dirtiest around.

Hard to really understand how much Lew did for KU, and how much KU did for KU.  Despite my lack of any experience working in an Athletic Dept, I'm confident that I would be able to increase Athletic Dept revenues at the University of Kansas.

Having said that, there's two ways to do things, the right way and the crap way.  Lew chose the latter and has left KU's administration, fans, and alumni to deal with it.

When Lew started going to the "I'm old" barrel repeatedly, that's when you knew there was an absolute $hitstorm going on behind the closed doors.   Tardville seems to think that since they're giving him his "retention" money that means they're all in the clear on the ticket scandal.  But another school of thought is to buy the guys silence, and help him possibly pay for some hefty legal fees coming down the line.   Lew lawyers up and suddenly the truth comes filtered through legal counsel.

I beileve the reason is they paid the 2 mill to put the former by his name. Also so that they can burn him alive once the FBI or NCAA and say look we took care of the problem. Also telling is how far they went down to slap the interm title.

QFT -- There's a hell of a back story on this early retirement deal.  The original retirement was fishy to begin with, hung with the stink of giving Lew time to cover on some other, unknowm mess in the ku athletic dept.  This quasi-firing tells me that he failed, and the details are going to surface.
