Damn. Going to be interesting to see which is a more catastrophic disaster, Turner Gill or the IRS probe.
It's about to get ugly up in here.......

well it's not like they were going to let him stick around for a year to collect another 600K were they?
-
While one can't say for certain . . . but we've seen the trailers, and it looks like this MIGHT be one hell of a movie headed our way.
:bwpopcorn:
-
well it's not like they were going to let him stick around for a year to collect another 600K were they?
They did pay him the $2 million retention bonus that he was not due to collect until next June.
-
well it's not like they were going to let him stick around for a year to collect another 600K were they?
yes they are. Something is up on this. Now ku is going to hire a non athletically friendly AD and be a drag on us once the Big 12 dies again.
-
Lew, Lew, Lew . . . this could have the makings for one of the greatest "what could have been" stories in history. But instead the egos and the typical ku way of doing business reared its ugly head again. Always remember, this is a school that names sports venues after convicted felons and defrocked CEO's (potential convicted Felons).
-
Lew Perkins was nothing more than a morally corrupt CEO, who had no clue when it came to the non-business side of being AD. The guy did a great job of increasing KU's athletic budget and upgrading facilities, and KU had quite a bit of success while Lew was AD, but his recent coaching hires leave a lot to be desired, and the athletic program as a whole is headed backwards instead of forwards. Good riddance.
-
So Beems was this a chancellor call or booster call on the earlier than expected retirement??
-

They were going to do what he wanted. They are gutless.

NDSU? Your thoughts?
-

Probably a combination of both. This was essentially a nice way of telling Lew that he's fired.

Good to have you back BMW. The death to ku football would not be as much fun without you (by the way this is for you in case Carson sucks and Gill makes us your Texas hope victory)

Disappointing to look up into the rearview and see the Jayhawk program we shot past a whule back over on the sholder, and on fire.

Beems used to LOVE Mangino. Then he turned on him. Beems used to LOVE Perkins. LOVE him. And now, nothing.

WTF?
-
If Ku rolled up a 30pt win on Sat, Lew would still be playing Rock Band in his office on his donor provided plasma as I type this.
NDSU really threw a wrench in his victory lap.
-
I suppose they didn't want a lame duck AD heading their search for a new football coach.

I originally thought TG was safe for next season since Lew was leaving so late. However, given this development, you may be right. Get a new guy in with time to find the next coach.
I swear to fracking god, if they hire Leach out from under us, my head will explode.

Kansas AD Lew Perkins retires
Associated Press
LAWRENCE, Kan. -- Embattled Kansas athletic director Lew Perkins has retired, a year before he planned to step down.
Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little and Perkins made the announcement Tuesday.
Perkins is 65. He had said in June he would retire in 2011.
Since Perkins arrived from UConn, the Jayhawks have won the NCAA basketball championship and the football team won the Orange Bowl.
But there have also been scandals and embarrassments, including a ticket scam allegedly conducted by staff members that cost the school as much as $3 million.
Perkins has not been implicated in any wrongdoing in the ticket scandal. Sean Lester was named interim athletic director.

ku already has the stigma of being pricks with the way they ran Mangino out of town (2 years removed from Orange Bowl win and COY honors). NO WAY they can fire Gill after one game and pray to get a decent coach in the door.

So Lew gets to retire over a year early, and still picks up the 600k retention bonus?
Even in ending his career, Lew is incredibly elite.

No. He picked up $2million. :surprised:

They had to pay him the money. He is about to become the biggest scape goat in state history.
Lew is an inspiration.

BITB could not match this degree of owning ku, could not attract $2million in ad $$ that would compare to what Perkins is doing to that university. Totally awesome to watch a master at work.

BITB is picking at a Zepi's large wearing his high dollar threads from Dan Dan the Tailor man, all on ku's dime.

Is there any way we could pick up both Mangino and $weet Lew?
-
Is there any way we could pick up both Mangino and $weet Lew?
Lew is EMAW. I'm telling you.
-
Having Lew would be cool if I had 10 yrs left to live. You could expect those last 10 years of sports to do some great things. Problem is that shortly after that crap would fall apart and he would leave us broke and broken which would suck to have to watch for years after.
-
Will Lew give a driveway interview that makes reference to a crushed dove?
-
Nowadays . . . everytime the $hit hits the fan in Lawrence, they trot out Bill Self.
It's like Tardville is a bunch of small children and as long as ku trots out Bill Self like the shiny new toy . . . Tardville is pacified.

Well, the basketball program was #1 in the country for the majority of last season, and is still expected to be a top 10 team next year. It's really all we've got at this point.

Bill Self was at ku when Perkins got there. I don't know who Lew gave hummers to for that BCS berth, but doubt that forgettable game was worth 2 mil.

It's hard to quantify the value of a BCS win, because these are the wins that build programs. Just look at how far KU football has come since that magical victory.

Perkins took KU's athletic budget from roughly $30 million to $70 million. That alone is worth $2 million.

I absolutely love how this statement characterizes ku sports...not "earn", but ""pay". It's a credo that makes all the scandals make sense.

1. It wasn't a statement, it was a question.
2. "How much would you guys 'earn' for a national championship and a BCS Bowl?" doesn't really make sense.
:dunno:
-
You're the one that asked the question, so there's really not much basis for a pissing match.
-
KSU would earn it with "heart" and "determination" fwiw :jerk:

was really odd. where was the chancellor? is it back to the basketball coach running the Athl dept again at ukans?
-
Here's your watch or whatever Currie. Have your office cleaned out by 5PM. The new guy is starting early.
-
if currie got us into a bcs game we didn't deserve to be in i would poop my pants w/ happiness and love him for life.

I think the real question is "how much did YOU guys pay for your nc and BCS bowl?"
-
Not disputing Lew helped ku. But boy did he make ku pay him for it. The $2mill from today is on top of all the violations and the 4.2mil he took last year.
Lew perpetuated ku's national rep as being the dirtiest around.
-
The man is a full on genius.
Soon we'll be seeing the FY 2010 Financial Reports. The EADA reports are due to the Dept. of Education in October and they'll be updating their website. I know the auditors are finishing up the annual audit at K-State right now. We could be in for some fascinating reading.

Hard to really understand how much Lew did for KU, and how much KU did for KU. Despite my lack of any experience working in an Athletic Dept, I'm confident that I would be able to increase Athletic Dept revenues at the University of Kansas.
Having said that, there's two ways to do things, the right way and the crap way. Lew chose the latter and has left KU's administration, fans, and alumni to deal with it.

When Lew started going to the "I'm old" barrel repeatedly, that's when you knew there was an absolute $hitstorm going on behind the closed doors. Tardville seems to think that since they're giving him his "retention" money that means they're all in the clear on the ticket scandal. But another school of thought is to buy the guys silence, and help him possibly pay for some hefty legal fees coming down the line. Lew lawyers up and suddenly the truth comes filtered through legal counsel.
-
What an absolutely terrible time to retire. Makes the university looks like it's crumbling down....

I beileve the reason is they paid the 2 mill to put the former by his name. Also so that they can burn him alive once the FBI or NCAA and say look we took care of the problem. Also telling is how far they went down to slap the interm title.

QFT -- There's a hell of a back story on this early retirement deal. The original retirement was fishy to begin with, hung with the stink of giving Lew time to cover on some other, unknowm mess in the ku athletic dept. This quasi-firing tells me that he failed, and the details are going to surface.
