When making a list of Big 12 venues to visit, Memorial Stadium in Lincoln or Norman may easily top the list, but Memorial Stadium in Lawrence, Kansas might at first seem like a less desirable destination.  That just might prove to be a mistake.

Regardless of the Jayhawks' performance on field, Kansas fans continue to flock to Memorial in droves.  2009 represented a struggling Jayhawk squad who managed only five wins (after a stunning 12 win season only two years prior) but still averaged 50,581 fans in a stadium that holds 50,071.

Built in 1920 to honor Kansas students who died in World War I, Memorial Stadium is a tremendous college football venue. The University of Kansas may be overlooked as a basketball school that is mildly interested in its football when in reality it is a hotbed of fanaticsm for both sports.

QFT.  "Underrated" is usually a backhanded compliment bordering on an insult.  Like,  "Hey you aren't nearly as stupid as I thought you were", or "Your sister's herpes don't burn that badly"

The new videoboard does look good . . . but it is kind of funny seeing Kivisto's name up there considering he hasn't given ku all the money he promised, and he's inline to become the second name associated with a ku sports facility to go to prison.

Memorial Stadium in Lawrence is one of the best stadiums around.

What other BCS school allows visiting fans to take over the stadium year in year out?

Answer? None.

One of a kind, that stadium.

Yeah, the high school track is somewhat less high schoolish partly due to the perfectly framed view of Mt. Ranier on the horizon and Lake Washington chalked full of million dollar yachts 100 feet from the endzone.

Husky Stadium's scenery is tight.  Its atmosphere is bogus.  Good luck getting hostile with that track in the way (check out how far back those horrid end zone seats are).  Plus, nobody in Seattle really gives a crap.

Wash's stadium and campus is amazing.  Their administration building makes Anderson look like a lesbian armpit.  Big open field in front of it looking out over a view of Mt. Ranier. Considering Ranier is about 4X the height of any other mountain in the area, it really stands out for an amazing view.  Flights in get great views of it and St. Helens.

Hands-on-hips is more impressive in widescreen I must admit.

beems, hands-on-hips early in the first quarter of the spring game is not a good sign.

Probably the reason why they had a 25-minute running clock for the second half of their spring game.

K-State generated $9.66 million in football ticket revenue and saw average home attendance increase from 50,824 fans to 51,881.

I am glad someone posted this. Husky stadium is an absolute dump. It has an unbelievable atmosphere and crowd, but they aren't starting a multi-million renovation because it doesn't need it.

As for the view, notice most pictures are from the air, not from a typical seat.

That list does have a fair amount of credibility, with the wing joint joke in the middle of it.  That, and this disclaimer:

Quote
First, it seems prudent to mention that selecting every “underrated” place to watch a college football game is virtually impossible as the landscape of our nation is literally covered with such meccas.

Additionally, the selection of “preferred” venues is obviously a highly subjective task.  What one considers a gold mine another might deem a fully soiled portable toilet.

Regardless, the following 25 football destinations (listed in no particular order) may not be on anyone’s “bucket list” and planning a visit may seem like a waste of precious resources and time.

I went to the Harvard-Yale game at Yale last November.  Even with an absolutely crazy finish, it was a garbage facility.  I mean a bad place to watch a game.

Still better than KU. I mean, Yale Bowl is over 80 years old and even it doesn't have a track.

Title: Re: Top 25 most underrated college football stadiums
Post by: SkinnyBenny on August 30, 2010, 11:30:43 PM
It's an unusual enough setting to be worth doing once.  The pitch of the stands is really low, which makes it pretty impossible to see if you're in the end zones.  The seats were made before Americans grew big fat asses and crazy long legs, so if it's half-full it's super uncomfortable.  Which I guess is cool with me, even though I'm 6'3".  I'd usually prefer to be uncomfortable if it meant I was watching a game in a super historic stadium....unless that stadium has a track and horrible sightlines.

The Yale Bowl's charm is that you feel like you're going back in time.  There is no jumbotron, no massive soundsystem blaring Seether, and no advertisements.  Anywhere.  None. It's absolutely crazy how weird it is to not be bombarded with a KStateCars.com commercial playing way too loud during a timeout.  So that's nice.  Other than that, the people at those games DO. NOT. GIVE. A. crap.  I was there when they were playing freakin' HARVARD and no one was interested.  Atmosphere in that respect was absolute garbage, almost like being in a library or at a game at uk.   All the students were completely shitfaced, though, so that was entertaining.

Weird.  I would have assumed that they would at least get into a game against Harvard.  Guess academic types aren't exactly known for being rabid sports fans.  Still doesn't explain KU's suckitude though.

Sorry Ben, but every KU student that I know personally has told me that they like our stadium ten times more than Memorial. Try again.

Funny... I had several K-State friends in town for a football game a year or two ago, and they said that Memorial's game day atmosphere absolutely blew Manhattan's out of the water.  Take the track out of Memorial and complete the Gridiron Club, and it won't even be close.

That's strange, because I have a petition signed by 112,000 KU alum asking for KU to completely quit playing football and to instead just let the fans attend K-State games and tailgates because they are super fun and everyone thinks KU's are lame and smell bad.  Weird.

What's all this rape stuff lately about?  I'm assuming something to do with Ben's frat or something.

When it comes to Tardville and its ilk . . . they've always got a little anecdote.  "Oh, I had friends in town, and they told me that Lawrence was the greatest place they've ever experienced in their lives.  Collectively they're all selling their homes in South Beach, Malibu, Milan, Paris, just off Central Park in NYC and every one of them is moving to Lawrence."

Hey, the sideline reporter for USC, and current L.A. sportsradio host and former college football player said BSFS was bar none,  "the loudest football stadium I've ever been in."   So there you have it . . . absolute proof that BSFS is the best overall college football atmosphere in the United States, the side line reporter for USC said so.

From the old ESPN Big 12 beat writer:

Quote
Kansas State: The best tailgating in the league and a nice comfortable press box. Who could ask for more?

Quote
Kansas: Mark Mangino has pumped more life into Memorial Stadium than I ever could have imagined. But it still feels a little sterile at times.

...and KU fires the only guy that was capable of pumping life into their stadium.

Earthquake-like ground motion induced by a morbidly obese man is more of a structural problem than it is "pumping more life"

Yeah, ku's tailgating is a joke- and it is not scientifically possible for BMWJ to have "several" or "any" kstate friends, so stop bullshittin BM.

A lot of "this place sucks" and "this is all the louder it gets" coming from NDSU fans at the uk game tonight.  They were very unimpressed with that stadium.

Quotes from two UCLA players who were asked about the atmosphere at the Bill during postgame interviews:

Quote from: Junior Linebacker Akeem Ayers
On the atmosphere of LHC Bill Snyder Family Stadium…

“It was cool. But it did not really affect me. Since I am a defensive player, I do not really pay attention to the crowd.”

Quote from: Sophomore Running Back Johnathan Franklin
On the atmosphere in LHC Bill Snyder Family Stadium…

“It was amazing. This is the type of games we want to play in. We would love if we could play in this type of atmosphere every week. It was great.”

"I think the environment that we're going to play in Cedar Falls is going to be much more of a hostile environment than Memorial Stadium in Kansas. That was pretty docile," North Dakota State coach Craig Bohl said. "And the type of team that we're going to be playing is going to be a much more physical, aggressive football team than KU. And quite frankly I think we're going to be playing a better opponent. I know one school is in the Big 12 and the other one is in the Missouri Valley. I think that gives an indication on how we see Missouri Valley play and the respect we give Northern Iowa."

note: i realize there's an entire thread for this. just thought it should be added to this ku stadium thread, for obvious reasons.
