That Orange Bowl season was just business as usual.

Chings actually did a really good analysis on this subject and found that there have been, statistically speaking, only two outlier seasons (real "flukes") in the history of the Big 12.  The first was Texas' crap year right after the conference started, and the other was KU 2007 season.
