Title: Wine Thread
Post by: EllToPay on August 04, 2010, 09:37:58 PM
Really starting to get into wine, thanks to Mrs. EllToPay. Just finished off a bottle of Trio Vinegar, I guess its good. Still a noob at this wine stuff.

What are some good, non expensive bottles? Red or white...

I'm big into Spanish wines and you can get some very good prices on them now.  Tapena is an extremely well priced brand...I love the Tempranillo and Garnacha.

*edit-  Forgot to mention that Glazier distributes it in Wichita and KC, so you shouldn't have too much trouble finding it.

Sweet, that opens things up quite a bit.  One of my favorites, at any price-  Pares Balta, Mas Elena.  Run ya about $25-30 at a liquor store.

it takes a long time to understand wine.  i'm not sure the best way to do it- by starting with milder blends or by deciding on a varietal you like and getting to really know it, then branch out from there.

probably the best way to do it is to stick with one style until you figure it out.  the same grape can be influenced by so many factors that you might think you're drinking a completely different varietal.  maybe start splitting a bottle a night with your wife.  don't spend too much, you won't know what you're tasting and a lot of the more expensive wines aren't meant for immediate consumption.

on the weekends make it a game.  decide on a grape, let's say chardonnay.  you each buy two bottles of chard, one that is <$10 and one that is between $20-$30.  don't tell each other which is which.  you each serve each other your wines and jot down some thoughts on each and talk about them while you're drinking them, try to figure them out.  after you've knocked down half of all four bottles, which would be a bottle each, make the big reveal to each other.  then compare notes and talk more about which you liked and why.  it's pretty fun.

i was lucky, i started working at a liquor store around the time i turned 21 and in an effort to get us to sell more wine (because the margins are so high on it), the owner had us take classes and drink it a lot.  even though i've been drinking it forever, i still learn a lot.

also buy a decent book about wine and learn about the different grapes and their history.

yeah, if you put a $200 bottle and a cheapie in front of me, i couldn't tell the difference.

i prefer red right now, whites are ok.

what do you mean by milder blends? what do i look for on the bottle?

Mondavi is a good solid Cab.  Depending where you buy it, you can get it for $14-$18/ bottle

I also like Wolf Blass.  Red label.  They have a blend of Shiraz/Cab that is pretty good.  Around $20per.

I would buy a couple diff types in the above cost ranges until I found a few I like.  Doing this will also help you find a few tastes you don't like/do like.

you didn't say where you were.  since you don't know what you like, if you live anywhere moderately urban, i'd just look for a solid wine oriented liquor store, give them a price range, let them know you'll be spending some serious money and let them pick for you for a year or two.

by then you should at least know what you like and can just worry about finding it.

ask piss which store to go to, and then turn yourself to their mercy.  there's no way you'll do better on your own.
Lukas Liquor @ 119 and Metcalf on the KS side, or Lukas Liquor @ 103rd & State Line on MO side.  The MO one does wine tasting in store.  Both stores have the best selection and knowledgeable staff in KC.

since you mentioned red wine, try a couple of these blends-
Ferrari-Carano Sonoma County Siena (~$25)
74% Sangiovese, 26% Malbec

Estancia Meritage (~$25)
58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 8% Petit Verdot

Both should still be available @ Lukas, I know the Siena is.  Sometimes the Estancia is hard.  If they aren't, they have a ton of other meritages/blends.

It's probably best for you to start with a couple of good blends so you can get used to the taste.  Bad blends are bad.  Set a baseline with the good blends then work your way down to $10-$15 varietals, then back up to more expensive varietals.

yeah, it's pretty much the greatest thing ever invented in the history of mankind.  cool part is that they actually hire people who know their crap.  the problem that you run into at a lot of liquor stores when you ask the people who work there for help is that they're really just puppets for the distributors, meaning that they're going to push you to the wines that they're getting the best margins on through their distributor.  same thing happens at a lot of restaurants, their wine lists are filled with wines that the distributor bought cheap b/c no one else would buy it, then they unload it at bars/restaurants/liquor stores.

also you have to be carefull when you buy wine b/c of the rating, there's so many ratings out  there now that they've lost their value.

Ya I agree about the wine ratings, but I can't really discern good wine from bad wine so it's no biggie as long as I don't spend much.

IMO almost anything that is coming out of Argentina or Chile (specially the Malbec's) are phenomenal for the price.

If you have the opportunity take a wine class. K-State offers one for credit. When your homework is to drink 1 new wine a week, you're doing alright.

$40 is a huge cushion. You can really find some great Pinot Noir's starting round about $25. Oregon has been producing some decent cheaper, while Napa, as always, is putting out phenomenal Pinot grapes.

For the price i think the shiraz's are pretty tough to beat.

but honestly, follow these steps to a happy life of wine:

1. Learn how to properly address and keep a wine (not very tough, youtube probably has instructionals).
2. Learn how to taste. It also helps if you recognize what you are looking for or what the varietal is supposed to accomplish.
3. Drink a ton of it. Order flights every chance you get and taste as much as you can.

In downtown KC, I used to go to Cellar Rat(on Baltimore iirc, around 18th st.).  They are small, but have a decent selection and seem to know quite a bit.

In NKC, Gomers used to be pretty good too.  Knew their crap.

Everywhere else, I agree on Lukas.

he has them at the garozzo's downtown.  he walks around the dining room and talks to everyone, he's really cool.  you get to drink the wine and talk to him.  he loves kc.  i'll let you know when the next one is.

i think his wine is ok, but some of it really isn't.

Yeah, I just want to get really drunk and talk about the '03 Chiefs.

Also want him to diagram a play on a napkin or something.

I bet many coaches could make a pretty fun second career doing exactly this.

I contacted his agent four years ago and tried to get a reduced rate. The price they list at those sites isn't the actual price for many of the "celebs," and I doubt many groups are ponying up $40k to listen to Dick Vermeil speak.

I will say, though, that Vermeil could easily justify that rate since he'll inspire a room full of people and instantly turn them into hard-working, successful bad asses that can dominate whatever profession they choose.

I like wine, but I've determined I will not learn to like the good stuff. I did that with beer and there's no going back to crap like bud light. I like cheap wine right now, and as long as I don't start trying more expensive stuff it will stay that way.

don't let fake wine snobs intimidate you.  you can find perfectly enjoyable wine for under $10 a bottle (actually, you can find it for under $5), even in the us.

under $5?  no.  under $10?  yes but you have to have the baseline foundation/knowledge to find the good ones in a sea of crap.  $10-$15, hot spot.

My dad owns a bar in New York and has about 10 beers on tap, and there's also two wine dispensers that are labeled "chardonnay" and "white zin." I have heard several customers comment that the chardonnay is "excellent."

That always catches me off guard.

"You've never drank box wine?" I ask them.

Them: "Yes, I have. But it's disg...wait...is this Franzia?!?"  :horrorsurprise:

under $5?  no.

big house red in the 3l box.  you can usually get it for $18/box or so.  it's not as good as when grahm ran bonny doon, but for $4.50, i'll drink the crap out of that stuff.

there's other bargains around, including some of the other octavin boxes.  but i'm not really exploring much else as long as i can get this wine at this price.

I tried to class up my night and buy the good boxed  wine (black box). It smells of poop and tastes worse than stuff at half its price. Unfortunately I don't have someone to sit across from and discuss all the nuances only to reveal the price at the end of the night. Heard doing that is a blast. Still going to drink all of it though.

Currently drinking:

The Show 2010 Malbec (Argentina)

Is good I guess.  On second glass, the nose is good, not overly spicy for how Malbecs seem to be going these days.  Starting to get a very little misty fog in my brain.  It isn't dealing with my runny nose/sinuses like I wanted, but it is also more smooth and calming.  Not vineagary or harsh at all.  Maybe my senses are just dull right now.

Either way, good experience so far.  It paired well with my dinner of leftover steamed rice and lamb as well as "Moves Like Jagger"

yeah. either you like it or you don't. not my taste. I'm not a huge fan of whites in general but if I'm going to drink them I prefer crisp, dry, steel-aged whites.

If I'm having some people over my go to party wines are the Kirkland Napa Valley Chard 1.5L from Costco for about $10 and Liberte Paso Robles Cab from Trader Joe's, also about $10. Pop the cab 30 to 60 minutes before your ready to drink it. Opens up really well.

Futo is decent wine but didn't really do anything special for me to be honest. Sure it's high dollar, but that's not reflective of the quality of the wine as there are much better options for the price range out there.

Yo, fellas, let's talk wine!  <---- (insert wine). So Ms. Wacky and I joined this two weeks ago: http://cellarandloft.com/ (Owned by Eddie Kennison and influenced by Vermeil). It's pretty awesome so far. It's right down in the river market. For like $32 a month they deliver 2 bottles of wine to you. It can change with beer selections too. With that cost, you get free wine, beer, and whiskey tastings on the weekend and 20% off everything in the store. They also have a really nice patio to chill on. I've noticed we've befriended a lot of ppl our age since joining. You can bring your own food or have what they cook there (generally pizza). It also puts you in the drawings monthly for a week stay in napa valley. Anyways, didn't know if any of you had heard of this or were members. It's pretty cool.

If I lived in KC I'd be all over something like this. As it stands now, I'll settle on 20% off on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at the Fridge  :D

Also, with the weather warming up I tend to drink less wine and stick almost exclusively to beer.

Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the more complex and layered wines out there. It has higher tannins and a savory character often described as black pepper and tobacco. Because of Cab’s traits, look for foods high in fat and umami flavors for Cabernet Sauvignon food pairing.
Title: Re: Wine Thread
Post by: Mr Bread on August 12, 2014, 12:31:29 PM
Try Cabernet Sauvignon with a charred gruyere burger, a mushroom pizza with tomato sauce or some marinated ribeye steak. To champion the fruit flavors in Cabernet Sauvignon, don’t pair it with chocolate. Instead, pair wine with braised short ribs or mushroom stroganoff. The powerful umami flavors overcome the savory quality of Cabernet Sauvignon leaving the berry flavors out in the open to shine.

Researchers studying Cabernet Sauvignon in Canada discovered that wines made from vineyards infested with Asian ladybugs affect the flavor of the wine greatly. Ladybug taint occurs when ladybugs are inadvertedly added into the fermenting wines. :Yuck:

Cabernet Sauvignon is actually a natural crossing of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc that occured during in the 1600?s. Since then, it’s evolved to become what it is today. DNA testing at UC Davis discovered this relationship in 1996. :surprised:

A 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Old World is rare because Old World winemakers are awesome at blending varietals together. That said, Cabernet Sauvignon from Bordeaux tastes more like the herbal/floral flavors of graphite, violets and tobacco than fruit. When you smell a Bordeaux, you’ll often get hints of black cherries and licorice along with the earthiness. Imagine you’ve filled a new leather bag with a pound of black cherries and held it to your chest while rolling down a hill. Yum. :lick:

Oz Winery. My mom got me three different reds.  :Yuck:

On one hand, it seems unfair to compare them against people who have been at it for a long time with far superior resources.  On the other, they charge $20-25 per bottle.

No, it was a documentary of sorts following 3 wine makers of different operation size for a year from planting to harvest/bottling. Pretty interesting. All of them were very excited about the 2012 vintage after a 3-5 year "depression".

2012 was a near-ideal growing season, with a warm, dry spring fostering early budbreak and trouble-free flowering and grape set. consistently mild summer weather free of rain or unwelcome heat spikes allowed harvest of the grapes at just the right moment with a perfect balance of intense, concentrated fruit flavors and bright acidity.

Julie Johnson and her husband started frogs leap. divorced now and she started this place not far from there. would have never known it was back there because there is no signage or anything near the main road. suggest anyone in the area give them a call and set up a visit.

_FANw and I have started using this for wine: http://us.nakedwines.com/ (don't worry about the name, its completely SFW)

A cool concept, sort of crowdsourcing combined with wine marketing. We like the wines a lot, the interaction on the website with wine ratings and talking to wine makers is kind of cool, and you can get (IMO) good wines for good prices.

Sys, waks let’s get this thread back on track.

I have a sub to del dotto wines and get a shipment every 3 months or so, it is a little pricey but free shipping and I really like the cave blend.

Other go to’s

Goru Verde—. Great jammy wine
Zolo Malbec— decent cheap Malbec

I think in manhattan the best values are Spanish/Portuguese Reds and Shiraz, but can also sometimes find deals on champagne as I don’t think many drink moet or bollinger and there are discounts if it isn’t during the holidays.

yeah, same. I'm infuriated with their current omaha selections. last week I emptied out a wine box of something to get one for my cart only to toss it aside after I didn't like any of what I was looking for. mrs dave's daily driver was the decoy cab they had for 2+ years but they don't have it recently only their "red". they still have caymus and prisoner for dinner/cocktail wines at ours. these are almost certainly n00b picks and I have no idea about "old world" stuff. I am a wine low/medium for sure.

BONUS: hyvee has a dependable and robust selection and if you buy 6 bottles you get 10% off your entire purchase and a lot of the time it'll make it equal to costco prices in my experience. the decoy cab for example was the same after they got me 10% back. also they'll run random bizarre specials on good bottles. I got a frogs leap cab 30% off the other day.

I have a bottle of this (not expensive) I've been "cellaring" (sitting in my basement) since we went there and mrs. dave got all hornt about their "sustainable" whatever and the winemaker personally showed us around the entire time and told us about her grand plans to have a farm to table something or whatever and it was a really small personally touch type deal. she kept picking like tomatos off vines and making me chomp into them. I'm tryna' get blackout on wine over here people! my most positive napa valley experience for sure. anyway, she was the divorcee of the frogs leap winemaker (fairly recently when we were there iirc). She told us at the end about it and that they were 50/50 on that but her tiny leavings of incredibly expensive property left me skeptical. Anyway, anyone going to Napa for sure go to Tres Sabores. It was a 10/10 Napa experience which is like a 7/10 Sonoma Russian River experience but STILL GOOD.
