Title: Driving vs. Flying
Post by: CrushNasty on August 02, 2010, 09:08:54 PM
What makes your decision for you? Price vs. time vs. mileage vs. gas prices vs. length of trip vs. etc. etc.?

Tell me goEMAWers, what is it?

One example: Drive from Dallas to Manhattan for Labor Day weekend UCLA game (late Fri-Monday) or fly? $150 in gas vs. $280 roundtrip.... 3-4 hours in the air/airport vs. 15 on the road.

EDIT:: number of travelers is obviously a big factor too.. in the example assume one and two passenger situations please. TIA.

I weigh it between total length of the trip and cost. How long is your commute to the airport?

Fly that bitch.  Do you wanna be the guy nursing a hangover on Sunday morning contemplating an 8 hour drive to Texas or the guy that's home resting after a flight while that guy driving is listening to Dingo Fuckwad sings the blues on OSMX radio in Bixby on a Sunday afternoon?

Depends on how much you'll want/need a car in MHK too.  Taxi situation here sucks and is extremely unreliable.  Since it is a direct flight to MHK tho, I would prob fly.  I do enjoy a good long drive on occasion tho.

Looking for more philosophy input, but thanks for your participation thus far in answering the example scenario.

Always fly if drive is more than 3-4 hours. Also, if your plane crashes you will be famous. No one cares if you die in a car crash.

I made a hard declaration last year that I'm never driving longer than 7 hours again in my life.  Also, if it is less than 7 hours but there are good flight times I'm flying too.  My time is worth more than whatever a plane ticket is going to cost once you hit 7 hours.

Drove, exactly 7 hours.  That was actually why I made the 7 hour rule.  It's how far it is to WKP.

wow i would have thought it would be longer than that.

lately i've been thinking that i should sell my car and buy a helicopter.  you can buy one for just under $100k and it would be great to get around in.  max cruising speed is ~100mph.

also saw a car that turns into a plane here--->  http://www.terrafugia.com/
they run just under $200k with a max cruising speed of 115mph

I declared the same thing after a horrendous drive to Denver last year.  Have kept my word thus far.

Also, you can get wasted on a flight.  Driving you run the risk of the fuzz taking you down.

Being from Western South Dakota, it usually takes me about 10 1/2-11 1/2 hours in a car to get back to see the family and friends during holidays. As a freshman in college it wasn't a big deal. Being out of school now, I can't stand it. By the time I complete the trek there or the trek back, I feel exhausted, sore, and sick. Not fun.

The only issue is that flying into Rapid City costs a boatload. So the trip is less than $200 in terms of driving there and back but flying is probably in the low $400s. Thanks to my company not giving raises in forever, it makes the decision still gear more towards driving then living the sweet life of being able to do the flying more often.

Not to mention if I get this arm candy of mine a ring in the next year or so, the expenses shall increase on both sides of the deal. At least when you drive solo you can push it and crank the rock. With a partner on the road, you stop more often (which sometimes is a good thing for your well-being if you push it all the time like I do), eat more, and listen to shittier music.

Tough decision dude. And I drive through Wall Drug every time. Imagine having to drive through eastern south dakota with nothing to offer except a wall-drug sign every 2 seconds.

Just flew RT to Denver for a weekend visit memorial day weekend.  Made for a fantastic trip that could have been disastorous.  I mean, basically 2 full days of driving and 1 day of hanging out compared to 2 3/4 days of hanging out and 1/4 day of flying.  No brainer.

9 hours or less?  Drive.

More than 9 hours?  Fly.

That rule can't fail you, really.

QFT.  By the time you drive to an airport, get through security,  fly to Denver, rent a car, and drive to Dillon you may as well just drive.

It takes you over 7 hours to stumble through security and take an hour flight to Denver?  Honestly not shocked at this.

Depends on where you live.  If you have to drive a couple of hours to reach an airport, security, rent a car, then drive to Dillon...  When I lived in Aspen, it was very time/cost effective to drive back to Wichita.  Especially if it was a last minute decision to come back to Wichita for a weekend or something...

Took a train fro Denver to Glenwood Springs once.  Once.  What would have been like a 2.5 hour drive was a 7 hour train ride.  Way too many stops.

From the Springs to Manhattan, I always drive. Anything longer and I would reconsider. For example, I drove to Yellowstone. 12 hours. That was hell.

i would like to try that drive on a motorcycle doing a wheelie.  i wonder if I could make it all of the way and back.  would be hard but good challenge.

Guess that would be fun, if you wanted everyone to call you a pussy.  The man's way to ride it would be to ride an endo, the entire time.

Probably be better to do a wheelie out there and an endo on the way back, prove that you can do both and aren't a total puss.

rather crap in crowded, nasty truckstop bathroom surrounded by sweaty, nasty men than alone in the great outdoors  with the wind whipping through hair and pipe in mouth.
