Title: Falconry
Post by: Dugout DickStone on July 25, 2010, 02:46:28 PM
Got a thick leather glove for my bday but don't have the falcon(s) yet.  Who all has done this?  Would love some "get started" tips.

Hoping to get good enough so I can do a halftime show at a Cats non-con game then maybe appear on KSTATEO poster.

1) Bring the falcon to MOAP.  We're doing an animal theme this year.
2) For halftime shows, incorporate frisbees.

sd TRUE LIFE FALCONRY STORY:  One time we had an aliseum (sp?) at school and a falconry d00d came and his falcon flew around the auditorium and then totally crapped all over the auditorium floor drawing uproarious laughter from us kids

LSOC,

Any update on the "War Falcon" proposal from the administration?   :crossfingers:

I am planning on introducing my falcon to rd's mini-rabbit.

buy the biggest you can possibly afford.  if you get a mini, you'll just want to upgrade in a month or two.

1) get well known as a real falconer
2) agree to do halftime show at uk/KSU game
3) show up with chicken on court instead of falcon

Good point.  I'm not scrimping on this purchase.  Going first class.  Plan on having some accessories for him too.  vests, a monacle, necklace...etc.

Do not do this. Frisbees are extremly dangerous. I was playing Polish horsehoes(not racist) yesterday and got smoked in the eye with a frisbee. Sporting a kickass shiner today.

you just should have caught it. either that or moved or something.

lsoc- just teach your falcon to catch the frisbees and follow through with the original plan. do not listen to gooch.

great plan, he'll be the belle of the ball, no doubt.  one more tip, put a weighted earing or something on the side of the head opposite the monocle.  you don't want him flying in circles.

Was a blast.  Hal is like our Joseph Smith/Moses, I wasn't going to miss this thing.

Orenthal (my falcon) and I made lots of new friends and a few bitter enemies.  But that's always the case at these get togethers.

The red-tailed is one of the most trainable of all avian killing machines, and also readily available as you have already noticed. Grab one and get it on a ham diet asap.

My dad raised a number of redtails, kestrels, and one barn owl when he was a kid, way before all the federal regulations on falcony.

A good buddy is picking up a redtail when trapping season open.  Mostly for hunting rabbits.  Really looking forward to when we can take pointed pheasants with one of his falcons.

These videos are amazing:
