Title: Back to Ahearn
Post by: royalswild on June 29, 2010, 12:35:47 AM
On the old Ksufans there was a thread and argument whether it would be legit to bring Ahearn back.  Post your opinions.

Just renovate Ahearn into a practice facility. Add all modern amenities needed but keep the history and the general feel.

Before everybody trolls me, I never said I supported Ahearn.  The whole thread is basically aimed at other peoples opinion.

Ahearn would be a great spot to lock all the Powertards into and set ablaze.

My opinion is that it would be nice in a fantasy world just for nostalgia.  But that is just a money pit.  Too many updates needed to get up to code.  Also we are making a name for the 'gone so no need to play games in Ahern.

Personally think that the Ahearn talk is on the right track but is short-sighted. I am of the opinion that we should move football back to Memorial Stadium and make no renovations. Now tell me that wouldn't be awesome.

We should renovate Nichols and move basketball back there.  Then we can hang from the rafters just like the old times.  Lots of great basketball played there back in the day.

My last post on that board.

I would love to burn Ahearn to the ground with everyone who ever attended a game there locked inside.

I have a program from a KSU vs USSR game at Ahearn. If we could play the Soviets with Harlem Globetrotter style refereeing, that would be nice.

There's a reason for this. It should stay there.

I've not seen wheat there. Don't pay too much attention but it seems like that part of the BSFS p-lot is on mostly row crop rotation. When is you all's wheat harvest going to start? How the beans looking? Corn? I assume the pigs are fine. tia

Like I always say, as someone who spent hours in Ahearn back in the day, and knowing that it has only received significant renovation to things like the V-ball dressing rooms, the V-ball offices, and had the indoor track redone a couple of times . . . it's still a craphole, which would require tens of millions of dollars of work before it could host any basketball games or be turned into a suitable basketball practice facility.   This is why I laugh at people who say, "lets play a game in Ahearn" . . . sure,  and fire officials would maybe allow 6 or 7,000 people tops to attend, and they'd have to spend well into the 6 figures just to get the placed square away to host one basketball game with 6 or 7,000 people there.

The window to renovate Ahearn was when everyone was hellbent on a new arena.   The $18.5 million spent on Bramlage in mid 1980's dollars could have done one hell of a renovation on Ahearn.   The biggest issue was that Ahearn would have had to have been completely shut down for over a year.   Because of its design they couldn't do a "pop the top" deal on it, and kept right on holding games like OSU did to GIA.

i don't even think that if we did free admissi's to the first 900k that we could pull a full million.  consider this- most basketball games are held when it's cold outside, snow, etc.  if we build that big of a stadium (which i agree we need), there will be some empties on those wednesday ice storm nights against A&M and other garbage ass teams.

it's like i always say- a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush

My fear would be that all the people that really wanted to go and would be willing to otherwise pay would be among the first 900,000 grabbing up all the free tickets.  Then you would have a heck of a time trying to sell out that last 100K and our school would look dumb for investing millions and millions of dollars in a stadium that size and then not being able to sell one damn ticket.  It would be like the ultimate
