I've never had it before, even after for sure being in poison ivy. I guess it's pretty common to get it for the first time later in life.
First started showing symptoms 8 days ago.
It started on my forearms.
Then it showed up on my legs.
Now a huge rash on my neck.
I think it's coming for my face next.
WTF is happening?! Why poison ivy, why are you doing this to me?
Any magic cures or remedies I should know about? Anti-itch creams including calamine lotion have done next to nothing so far.

if its spreading that much, I would head to urgent care asap and get a shot.

I'm sensitive to it, so now my eyes are good at looking for it. Anti itch creams do just enough to keep me from scratching until it bleeds, but SF is right, a shot is all that works. Downside it only works for a few days IIRC and poison ivy lasts for over a month with me.

Do it! The shot is steroids!

Running extremely hot water on it will feel amazing, the hotter the better. It feels like you are scratching every part of it at the same time with the most effective and perfect back scratcher ever devised by man.
Added benefit - it will stop itching for hours afterward.
Potential downside - 2nd or 3rd degree burns, permanent scarring.

Will try! I'm at the stage where I'm considering scratching it with a wire brush until I bleed out and die so 3rd degree burns sounds pretty good!

As a medical professional, I urge you to go to your doctor or a nearby urgent care and get some steroids in your system.
-
Really, it's best to always have steroids in your system. That way you are basically immune to poison ivy.
-
Thankfully haven’t had it in years, but poison ivy absolutely destroys me. Go get the steroids ASAP. They used to give a multi day course of pills. Sounds like it’s shots these days.

Either one is fine.

Yes obvs get the steroids but maybe allow yourself a scalding hot water blast first. It feels borderline orgasmic

Just did a teledoc appt. Sent them a few pics, had a 2 min conversation with the doc and they sent the steroids.
Not sure why they can't just send a drone to drop the steroids directly into my mouth but I guess I'll go to the pharmacy.

Glad you got it taken care of. I used to get poison ivy a lot when I was exploring random fishing spots and about once a year I'd just walk into the urgent care at Walgreens/CVS and say "I've got poison ivy and need some steroids" then BOOM, walk out with some Predisone.
It takes about 12-24hrs after you start taking it for the itching to stop and the rash to start clearing up but then you are golden.

one time in 8th grade i got into P.I. and was on the last day or so of my 'roids and we had a track meet, and took first in one of my races (1600m or high jump i don't recall, it was one but not both) and i was like like crap i hope they don't decide to test me for steriod use b/c i'm pretty sure they were not performance enhancing. maybe kind of a placebo effect, if anything. anyway great news, middle school track and field in the state of kansas did not opt to start drug testing that day so i got away with it, no * in the record books or anything (except deep down in my soul that record book has a gigantic * b/c i knew i wasn't playing fair. Will i ever forgive myself? someday, perhaps. perhaps.)
-
When I was in 6th grade I got P. Ivy on my private parts and it is one of the worst experiences I've had in my entire life.
-
Did you scald yourself before the steroids or are you trusting big med?

Hell yeah I scalded the crap out of myself both last night and this morning. It does feel amazing and I was skeptical of the claim that it kept the itching at bay for a couple hours afterward but that's exactly what it did. In your fat face calamine lotion you worthless pos.

Poison ivy is so bad in a few spots of my property that I've seriously contemplated getting goats and pigs.
-
one thing about poison ivy that you never want to do is burn it. the oils turn to vapor and will seriously damage your lungs.
the goat thing is real, the ivy doesn’t effect them

well this thread is a real eye opener. I worked at Wildcat Creek when they first opened up their golf course. I used to shag balls in the poison ivy bushes next to the range because I was "immune." I also was a summer camp director for 20 years and I took care of poison ivy myself for the same reason. Knowing that _33 never had an issue until later in life leads me to the understanding that I just need to be happy for my previous good luck and to no longer tempt fate and just leave it the f alone going forth.
-
I’ve “lost” several golf balls to PIvy and by lost I mean I found the ball just fine but no way in hell I was walking through that crap just to retrieve a stupid golf ball
-
I had several terrible bouts with the Ivy when I was a youngster but either I developed some sort of immunity to that crap or have just been fortunate enough to not stumble into it anymore.

same with me. I used to get it bad when I was a kid. I would "just get it" at least once a year by being near it and not even in it. It was awful. I just remember by entire arms and legs being covered in bubbles. Suffering through that must have built up immunity or something as I just stopped getting it when I hit HS and now that i'm old ballz.

I had the stuff real bad once as a youngster. Had to get the roids to clear it up. Dr. said to make sure to take a shower within a couple of hours of known contact. I've been doing that ever since then and I've only had a small rash a couple of times.
