Title: The SEC invitational
Post by: EMAWzifried on March 17, 2025, 03:13:36 PM
I'll be rooting against all SEC teams. Our resume last year was every bit as strong as that of Georgia and Texas this year, much less UNC -- yeah, I know they are not SEC. I even have to cheer for KU in the first round because of the shame of a farse

14 teams is stupid. I bet most will lose in the first or second round.
Title: Re: The SEC invitational
Post by: catastrophe on March 17, 2025, 08:31:57 PM
I mean even if there were 14 deserving teams the odds are most will lose in the first two rounds…

I don’t really feel qualified as a basketball watcher to second guess the committee’s choices, but I do feel qualified as a Cats fan to say we did nothing to warrant a bid this year or last year.

Incredibly disappointing.  Being one game under .500 in your conference use to be a death nail.  Tang needs to understand how to work the NET.

On another note, I just saw Self on the sports portion on the NBC news.  Unshaven and face red as a beet.  He apparently is taking his 7 seed seriously.  It's good to see.

The Drake win was the highlight of Day 1 for me.
Found myself cheering for KU against Coach Cal and the SEC.
What happened to Hunter Dickinson? He is regressing every year.
The fact that Pitino is still allowed to coach just shows how rotten much of this has become.

It won't happen, but... would be nice if McCollum parlays this into a better job and then Stirtz enters the portal and follows his heart to MHK.

I mean, it worked for Mayo/KU this year... why not us?

SEC will be at least 1/4 of the round of 32.  That's a record folks.

Maybe they and the Big 10 should break away, they're about to be half of the tournament.

My distaste for the SEC notwithstanding, Coach Cal is having quite a redemption tour with wins against Self and Pitino, two coaches generally viewed as superior to him.

Given his level of sleaze, it's kind of surprising that Pitino also didn't come from the Larry Brown coaching tree...

In a winner-take-all battle between Pitino and Calipari for the douchiest/cheatiest coach, it would be a simultaneous knockout in the 15th round

How hard do we TSC today?

Cheering for Baylor over Duke is an easy one.

Cheering for Iowa St would normally be impossible but I hate woman beaters more than I hate Iowa St.

Cheering for Arizona over Oregon is easy for me but I don't have a logical reason. I just found myself cheering for the Zona Cats through the Big XII tournament and harder than average for the first round. And their coach seems awesome. I think it's really cool that after his international basketball career, he backpacked for a while with his wife before coming back to the US to pursue coaching.

TSC hard today. Rooting for Chris Beard would be nausea inducing.

"We beat them by 19 points in Hilton".  This is what I'm thinking right now as I reflect on taking them so far in this tourney.  The only thing that will make me happy now is Iowa St. making a comeback and Oz fist pumping his fist on a time out like he did with us and then getting killed again.... or the camera panning to Chris Beard and him sneaking a drink from a flask.

Man, Houston too incompetent to even get a shot off in their last couple of possessions.
i’ve rewatched their final play several times and can’t figure out what kelvin drew up

What he didn't draw up at any point in the last 10 minutes was how to handle the blitzing of Houstons primary ball handlers around the perimeter. Just had no answer for that and it was pretty shocking.

Exactly. Tracy Wolfson said Sampson's message in the huddle was to be tougher. Like, how is being tougher supposed to help with perimeter pressure???

I think it's good for Kansas State basketball fans to see. You can't rely on the coach to draw up plays and get buckets in close games even if you have one of the best teams in the country. Both because mistakes happen and great defenses are all about disrupting plays coaches draw up.

The other good reminder is that great teams just don't have very many close games. No one remembers late game plays when you win by 15 every night.

yeah I heard one of the announcers talking about the blitzing which stood out because i’ve been watching basketball my entire life and have never heard it described like that.

whatever- they would have been better to not have called the timeout

i’ve also never heard anyone butchering a name like charles was butchering kelvin’s after the game

Yeah, idk how much only have 1 TO was but I was hoping when the Florida foul + Tech was going to give him enough time to help do something, there was still like 4 minutes in the game, It was like he was a little too hands off.

Also Houston missed some pretty easy inside shots while also taking horrible inside shots. Their defense did the job, they absolutely harassed Florida all game.

I feel awful for Houston, essentially solidified themselves as the best program to never win it all. 7 FF, 3 title game appearances and losses. That last possession will haunt them until they win it all.

I only watched the last 10 minutes but Houston was frantic the whole time.  Nearly every shot was a floater, leaner, or step-back.  When they actually made one, it was usually off tip-ins or putbacks.

Houston not even getting shots up during those last possessions is a painful way to lose.

The game seemed to turn when Florida got that tech.  After that Houston racked up like five or six fouls in like a minute or so.  Good call by the assistant on the bench.

On the first tech, for sure. It definitely woke up Florida, and Houston was getting called for a ton of fouls. I honestly thought the second tech though was going to end it. It came at an completely inopportune time for Florida and was totally unforced by their player (and he knew it). But still, 4 foul shots which Houston made 3 of them, but it really only held it off longer.

There was a bigger time gap  between the two than I thought.
