Title: VegasSummerPAK?
Post by: steve dave on June 17, 2010, 05:15:14 PM
Quote
At a recent workout with the New York Knicks, Denis Clemente played so well that Mike D’Antoni left his comfortable seat in the bleachers to have a private conversation with the former Kansas State point guard.

With the 2010 NBA Draft coming up next week, Clemente was thrilled to hear from another interested coach. He’s talked to a handful of them lately, and their feedback has led him to believe he will be selected somewhere in the second round.

Not bad for a guy who experts said wasn’t even a NBA prospect at this time a year ago.

“He’s been pretty much tearing it up at all the workouts he’s been to,” said Art Alvarez, the Miami Tropics AAU coach who is currently working with Clemente in Florida. “The feedback he’s getting is excellent. I’m talking blown-away stuff.”

Alvarez said most of the compliments have been centered on Clemente’s speed and improved court vision.

Clemente has worked out for the Charlotte Bobcats, the Chicago Bulls, the Sacramento Kings and will soon show off his skills in front of the Miami Heat.

In those workouts, he has mainly gone up against other players in three-on-three or two-on-two drills. Without 10 people clogging up the court, Clemente has been able to utilize his quickness.

“What do you think about when I bring up the NBA?” Alvarez asked. “Guards push the ball and do the pick and roll. Those are two things he does really well. That’s what the coaches are noticing.”

Alvarez said Clemente’s strong play as a senior at K-State improved his stock enough to be a borderline second-round draft pick, but his play during the past few weeks has made that stock rise even higher.

Colon already in the pros
Alvarez also has a close relationship with former K-State big man Luis Colon, who is already playing professionally.

“He started playing in Puerto Rico and was able to play out there and make some decent money,” Alvarez said. “He also got a call to go to Venezuela and play.”

This summer, you will find Colon in Las Vegas with the Euro summer league. Alvarez said scouts from overseas will watch Colon play for a team coached by Rick Mahorn. You may remember him from the Detroit Pistons.

Horribly misleading thread title.

I wish Kellis would have asked him about Fat Ass Freddy showing up weighing 400 lbs.

let's do the new Aria 3 nights 7/30-> 8/2 (fri-mon...3 nights).  If 2 people share a room it's only $520 a person rountrip airfare and 3 nights.  We'd be fools not to all pile on this mother rough rider and take Luis out on the town.  FOOLS.

I've always been a fan of finding a cheap hotel with a nice pool (Excalibur is great) since you're not in the room much anyways.  But if you high rollers want Aria, I'd be down (pool scene seems up to par).  When does Luis play?  Would be fracking great to go nuts at one of his games when we're prob the only people there.

Here's the thing, Excalibur would be $442 a person.  So, basically, you are only paying $80 to be assured you prolly won't get bed bugs and can get some decent food without leaving the hotel.

$80 is way worth it in this case.  Last time I stayed the Excalibur was about $30 a night. I took a quick glance at a few things online and the Aria deal looks pretty sweet.  Been wanting to check out city center.

Yeah, me too.  I hit vegas a couple times a year and ceasars is my go to.  Stayed as crappy as Bill's Gambling Hall and I would honestly do it again if I could save actual money doing so.  The thing is, you don't really have to sacrifice these days to stay somewhere nice.  Thank you recession!

Where should I stay on the strip?  Want relatively inexpensive, easy access to everything, first time in Vegas

Where should I stay on the strip?  Want relatively inexpensive, easy access to everything, first time in Vegas

You can find the nice places pretty damn cheap depending on your timing.  A lot of times it's just a matter of $20 a night to go from Harrahs to Caesars which is definately worth it imo.  We stay at Caesars most the time because it is central and nice and you can usually find a good deal.  The new City Center is also fairly centralized and brand new.  Aria and Vdara are their hotels that are open right now.  They are just opening and are pricing really aggressively because MGM is Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!) and are cannabalizing themselves.  Only one of them has a casino but they are all connected.  Start checking here from time to time until a good code comes up for where you want to stay:

http://www.fatwallet.com/forums/travel-discussion/704925/?start=2640

Rick Daris found us an excellent code for Caesars at VegasPAK.

I wouldn't stay at any of the super cheap ones.  Like, don't stay at Imperial Palace even though you can probably get a $30 room.  I will list where I would or wouldn't stay:

Would always if I can get a decent rate ($150 or less a night, ordered by niceness):
Wynn (Not centralized)
Encore (attached to and same as Wynn but newer)
Bellagio (Very central)
Palazzo (attached to and same as Venetian but newer)
Venetian (Palazzo and Venetian are next to the Wynn and are pretty far Noth Strip)
Aria (City Center, brand new, good central location)
Vdarra (same)
Caesars (kind of borderline not nice enough to be included with these others, very central, our go to)

If you get a ridic good rate ($75 a night, ordered by niceness) I would stay here:
Mirage (pretty centralized, next to caesars)
Signature (nicer attched MGM property, kind of sout end of strip but not extreme)
Mandalay Bay (Far south end of strip, has a monorail that sometimes is running to get you as far north as excalibur, ridic. pool complex)
MGM (humongous, get tired walking through here, they have lions, great food for not being uber-elite)
NYNY (meh)
Luxor (not very nice at all and far south but you can find ridic $40ish rates sometimes, shares monorail with Mandalay)
Paris (do not like but have stayed here, centralized)

Don't stay (lots of these shouldn't even be considered on the strip they are so far away and lots are just disgusting and smelly):
Ballys (no way)
Bills (have stayed here, kind of interesting to try, centrally located, weird)
Casino Royale (wut?)
Circus Circus (far away, disgusting, weird)
Excalibur (though chicat likes it for some reason)
Flamingo (not terrible and has a nice pool but)
Harrahs (meh)
Hooters (not even really on the strip)
Imperial Palace (centrally located and extra filthy)
Hilton (not even on the strip)
Monte Carlo (smelly and old)
Planet Hollywood (maybe nicer now than it used to be, don't know for sure)
Riviera (shouldn't even be called on the strip)
Sahara (same)
Stratosphere (same, also weird)
Treasure Island (borderline could be on the middle list but it's weird so it goes here)
Tropicana (though I think they just did a massive remodel so maybe nicer than it used to be)

Not saying I like Excalibur, just saying if you want to stay somewhere dirt cheap (because who is in their room longer than 6 hours to sleep anyways), Excalibur is on the strip and has a nice pool.  I would def leave it in the lower tier and wouldnt make a ladyfriend stay there, but if it is exceptionally cheaper than the higher groups, it has its merits

D) I don't have to stay in City Center but just thought it was an intriguing option because they are having a fire sale to try to fill the place
E) We may have to hash out details at SW KS 4th of July PAK because sdbro won't be back for awhile and I am going to have a commitment from him

I just meant would it be akward if I invited person sans-penis (for her or the group, I am assuming this maybe the case or at least it would be less fun if I did).  SWKS pak/vegas planning comission it is.  We can peer pressure Pexican into joining in there (don't tell him I said that).

Shows I liked were Penn and Teller, Cirque De Soleil, and like I posted earlier - Purple Reign.  Foodwise, I heard Rubochon is really good but have not eaten there.  Too see?  Just walk the strip and hit all the casinos some afternoon, you'll see some cool crap if you've never been there before
Until VegasPak, all my prior stays had been at places on sd's Don't Stay list except for the Westin.

100% off those times rates were higher than they are now though.  This is the golden age of going to Vegas for basically free.  City Center assured us of this right for some time to come.  It's glorious.

I havent been since the city center opened and like the idea of staying there.  Am I right in assuming this will be a bros trip?

And I use will be because this crap is happening

A) ya, mrs. dave isn't going if that's what you mean
B) I am initial planning stages on this and am going to need sdbro to get back from mexico in a week to discuss details and make a solid confirmation
C) I noticed Trim didn't give a huge confirmation that he was in when he posted in the thread, weird

Oh, ya, I'm not racist against girls.  I just meant I'm not bringing one.

Meh, I'll probably not either.  I can't imagine bringing one without too many rules being brought along with her. You and your hatred of womankind talked me out of it SD

anyone stayed at MGM?  I'm going in 3 weeks to bachelorpak.

At MGM Craftsteak is supposed to be good, we eat lunch at Diablos next to Monte Carlo every time we are in town and usually do Mesa Grill at Caesars each trip.  There is a great burger place in Mandalay called Burger Bar that is really good and pretty cheap.  Go to Mon Ami Gabi at Paris and sit outside for breakfast.  Like I posted above, O'Sheas is the greatest dirty place to gamble.  They have a midget on the mic that I do a pretty good impersonation of.  Harrahs has outside blackjack tables in the evening, usually have a band and the waitresses come around a lot if you tip them well a couple times.  This is great just to drink and hang out because they will have $5 tables if it's not busy.  I don't do clubs so I can't help you there.  If you go with your wife/gf you should go to Zumanity at NYNY.  Do not attempt this with a group of guys.  We usually go to the pool wherever we are staying for a few hours each day.  Some pools have blackjack but it's kind of a pain in the ass because, where the eff do you put your money?  Just get it wet?  The pool bar will absolutely rape you on drink prices.  When we stay at Caesars we buy beers inside at the little pool convenience store which is just steps from the pool and bring them out with us.  The pool there won't eff with you about it and it saves about 50% on drinks but they obv. don't have mixed drinks.

Has Vegas become overun with 6:5 blackjack tables yet?  How about continuous shoes?  Both of those things make me want to punch people.

You can find a good table most places as long as it's not busy.  The 6:5 pisses me off but the continuous shoe doesn't.  Single deck is pretty easy to find too.

let's do the new Aria 3 nights 7/30-> 8/2 (fri-mon...3 nights).  If 2 people share a room it's only $520 a person rountrip airfare and 3 nights.  We'd be fools not to all pile on this mother fracker and take Luis out on the town.

Just a little insidery vegas info - Aria sports book = only sportsbook that just drops bundles of booze on all patrons for free whether you are betting or not. Just ludicrously awesome. No stupid drank tix per bet, no limits on booze types, just free booze, all the time time in there. Mega classy joint.

Also, check out Todd English's Pub and order a pint of Arrogant Bastard Ale. You will not be disappointed.

Sounds like we need ot hit this Aria sportsbook.  I just don't have a clue as to what we could bet on.  I guess baseball is going on but that is just too slow of pace.  Arena football maybe? or WNBA?

Aria is available for the flight/hotel package.  I didn't look into it enough to see whether it's a good deal or not.  Often times, even with a free flight in the mix, the total doesn't beat finding the best flight deal and best hotel deal on your own.  Also, the flight out of Wichita is now at night and doesn't get there until 8:30 or so which would kind of suck for that Friday night.  Would possibly be better to do a Thursday thru Sunday.

I still don't know if I can go, but  if somebody else was flying out of Wichita and the goEMAW Vegas research team finds this is a great deal, I'd put my money in on it and if I don't make the flight, so be it.

Its been indefinitely postponed, though I am looking at possibly going in September (maybe the day after Farmageddon).  Looks like a good enough deal though, saves about $75 a person off the best deals I've found.

I am already heading out to Vegas on Aug 18th - 22nd. Staying at the Golden Nugget downtown. Flight leaves Wed evening comes back Sunday evening. We booked about a month ago for $335 a person. Any chance the goEMAW event could happen at this time? Don't think i could talk the old lady into two bro's weekends in Vegas.

Your "7" scale is weird.  NKJF was one of the highlights of VegasPak so that'd be the 10.  Touche` was probably 6 or so.

The most famous chokeout (okc) was me, Gooch & MIR.  He was in the mix of all the OKC stuff that you missed, so I guess I'd go w/7+.  He's also responsible for procuring all the pak head foamboards and banners.

Terrible Vegas Update

Those male genitals fondlers at City Center have changed their booze policy. Let me paint the following abortion.

On the morning of 'Murica VS Ghana-has-AIDS, I suggest to some broskis that we head to City Center for free booze, great seats and lovely waitress's at their sportsbook.  :drink: :pbj:

Get there, sit down, only to have the waitress tell me that on this very morning, they have changed their booze policy to unlimited booze IF YOU BET $125 MINIMUM.  :runaway: :bang:  :flush: I almost smacked her. Almost. Anyways we lost the game, I had to spend like $14 a drink at the bar and I swore I would never send any sort of financial or food based aid to Africa again.

Carry on kat fans.

That doesn't seem unreasonable to impose for a "big game", or in this case, one that had the attention of a bunch of freeloaders.

All things that attract old, ugly people.  Last time I was in Vegas my dad-in-law took us to that cig smelling abomination.  I wanted to hit him in the face with a deep fat fried bowl of bran or whatever the hell they sell down there.  Good place to see old bitches too ugly for the strip also good place to find $2 prime rib likely jizzed in by a minimum wage worker.

it's not better I just like it for a change of pace. Kinda like the river fest. I rough ridin' hate river fest but where else are you going to get that much free entertainment watching all of the freaks that come out for that crap.
